Tripping the field: an existential crisis of ungodly proportions

Rate this book
Tripping the Field: An Existential Crisis of Ungodly Proportions is a wild ride through some pretty unstable literary terrain! Empiricist scientist, Professor Michael Huxley tumbles, stumbles, strides, and crawls through the jungles of South America, the mountains of Tibet, and the backwoods of Colorado in search of enlightenment and the hope of saving the world from a religious cult that has discovered a dark shortcut to the power of quantum realities.

Huxley finds himself drawn into an adventure with his best friend, fellow professor Eden Jessep, a group of Special Forces commandos, a stunningly beautiful Peruvian special agent, and a precocious little girl from a mysterious tribe. Massacres, monsters, translocation, love, and a pit filled with skulls all get tossed into the teapot to brew as the group struggles to find a way to stop the cult's leader before he gains godlike power.

Touching on philosophy, physics, hallucinogens, addiction, and religion, Tripping the Field leavens these serious topics with irreverence and just enough absurdity that you're left understanding that this ridiculously funny and often tense joyride is absolutely true.

Yes, it's a novel about quantum physics and lucid dreaming and philosophy and psychotropic drugs and a dozen other things you may or may not know about, but it's so much more than that. It's not one of those books that can be clearly defined because it's packed with the perfect combination of everything: action and thrills and adventure and love; people and relationships; monsters and religious fanatics and ideas, lots and lots of ideas. You will love it and you should read it right now! You will not be disappointed.

I've read a lot of occult fiction, philosophy and psychology but never something that combined suspense, action, science and shamanism. I need to read it again because there's SO much to absorb, I couldn't do it in one reading. The author is either a guru, a genius or a total mad man. I want to see the movie version of this now!!!

One of the most interesting and intriguing books I have ever read! The story is compelling, and the writing paints vivid pictures. This is a book that simultaneously entertains, and makes you think, and reflect on your own beliefs.

5 chapters in, first thoughts.

Author has unique way of presenting the characters and setting. The story teller gets distracted as he narrates and this can seem odd at first, but it settles in a bit.

Book has me intrigued enough to finish.

I have had OBEs in past years, so it puts together concepts I researched when I was trying to understand and initiate an OBE.

Will review again when finished.

This isn't the type of book that I usually read but I found it intelligently written and thought provoking. The story line is wild but strangely engaging. I didn't expect to like it, but ended up loving it.

When Sharleen Nelson over at Gladeye Press asked me if I wanted to read and review Tripping the Field by Ian Jaydin I read the summary and decided it was a book worth checking out.

Jaydin has a unique style of writing that I found enjoyable and thought provoking. His story was not my normal style, but I enjoyed it. I liked the mix of science, religion, and philosophy that he blended together to create a story full of love, relationships, and strength.

I started reading this book and found it contained a lot of science gibberish about particles and waves, and lots of other things I am not that interested in and I was a bit hesitate about continuing forward, but I pressed on and I am glad that I did. I found a beautiful story of strength and love for others hidden in between the complicated science. I found myself often stopping to think and process and think about my own life and how I view things.

Tripping the Field was an interesting book. I can’t say I loved it since there was a ton of science stuff that doesn’t interest me, but it was well written and still enjoyable and definitely worth the read. I think it is a book everybody should read no matter what your stance on religion and philosophy is. The story told throughout the book goes so much deeper than those topics and it is a gem worth knowing about.

An existential carnival ride. Rarely does a new author bust out of the gate with such joyful and thoughtful prose. I found myself grinning from ear to ear with every page turn. To be thoroughly entertained while juggling with life’s big questions is a rare treat. I can’t recommend this book enough. I’m hungry for more from this author!
