La Bar-Mitsva
Sfar, qui est né lui-même dans une famille juive, met en scène une communauté juive du début du XXe siècle, à Alger. Dans un décor luxuriant de tissus, carrelages et tapis orientaux, il plante un héros qui semble sorti d'une poubelle : un chat écorché, anguleux, l'air d'avoir avalé un sac de clous — hilarant. Têtu comme une bourrique et pas toujours avenant (bien que capable de tendresses renversantes), il a aussi avalé ce qui se fait de mieux en matière de raisonnement vicelard, thèse, antithèse, etc. Le résultat est une sorte de conte initiatique d'une grande beauté, où l'on apprend bien des choses sur l'usage de la parole, de la vérité et du mensonge. Une merveille de subtilité, d'émotion et d'ironie. Le rabbin et le chat du rabbin reviendront prochainement dans Le Malka des Lions.

Lo mejor de este tebeo es cómo Sfar utiliza el carácter zalamero, caprichoso e iconoclasta de los felinos para soltarlo sobre las contradicciones de los dogmas religiosos. Es divertido leer cómo el felino juguetea y acorrala a un par de rabinos mientras busca la manera de convertirse en judío para poder estar junto a su ama. Y la simpatía inesperada con el que observa ciertos comportamientos hipócritas.

I read volumes 1,2 and 6 from the series, as this was all my library had. I liked volume 1 the most -3,5 stars, say, for the freshness.

Ce que j'ai vraiment aimé, en plus des illustrations qui débordent de motifs et de couleurs, est le chat, et le fait qu'il reflète un peu la nature humaine et l'assume, il est égoïste, biaisé, jaloux mais aussi hilarant, tendre (comme tous les chats) et surtout qu'il me donne à réfléchir avec ses innombrables questions et réflexions.

This little talking cat that want to have a Bar Mitzvah! He is witty and smart. He makes fool of a rabbi and a rabbi's rabbi. All he wants though is to be with the one he loves and thinks that it's worthwhile to shut your mouth to be with the one you love.

I read the Hebrew translation, and while I definitely enjoyed it, I can't say that it was anything special. The talking cat is an interesting narrator, but there is little dynamics, and most of the story is around discussions and arguments. I can't say I am too enthusiastic about the graphics either. They illustrate the characters and their surrounding nicely, and they have their charm, but nothing really stands out. Perhaps I am too familiar with some of the material (being a religion Jew) and too little with the rest (French culture, French comics) to enjoy this in its entirety.
Overall I did enjoy the book and I am waiting for the translation of the next volumes, but I only grade this three stars out of five.

Więcej takich komiksów, świetne i inteligentne dzieło o kocie mieszkającym wraz z rabinem, jego córką i papug... mieszkających w Afryce Północnej. Tym razem jest to wyprawa do świata Sefardów w którą zabiera nas Joann Sfar, wywodzący się zarówno z tej tradycji jak i aszkenazyjskiej.

My mother sent this to me for my birthday, which struck me as a rather surprising choice.
I ended up reading the whole graphic novel in a few hours... and enjoying myself in the process. The cat is a truly fun narrator: he is biased, dishonest, selfish, jealous, yet affectionate, clever and hilarious. The depiction of the Maghreb's Jewish Community of yesteryear was rather perfect, and of course that warmed my heart... my family was like that, just like that, but they are now just about all gone, leaving my misguided generation at the helm.
There are also some interesting homages to seminal French comics, which was really fun.
I am not sure how this would translate for a reader who lacks the socio-cultural references though.

La préface prétend «discussion intelligente [...] du judaïsme», mais je ne sais pas si elle dit vrai. Ce que je sais par contre, c'est que cette vignette
résume parfaitement cette oeuvre. Et que même si je n'apprécie pas particulièrement le dessin de Joann Sfar, je me réjouis de savoir que cinq autres tomes de cette série m'attendent.

Une excellente BD.
Si je ne suis pas une grande fan du dessin, j'ai adoré le contenu. Drôle, critique mais sans être accusateur, informatif sans être moralisateur, j'ai vraiment apprécié !!!

Ha sido fácil encariñarse con este gato y sus cuestiones *siempre lanzadas desde una muy propia curiosidad felina* y afiladas reflexiones -al tiempo que divertidas- sobre la naturaleza humana, con la religión judía como tema central.

J'aime beaucoup cette série de BD de l'incontournable Joann Sfar. Non seulement c'est très instructif mais le dessin est sublime et c'est dépaysant.

Charmante. I saw the movie and I feel like I already read this one but this story is just irresistible, the cat who starts to speak after "allegedly" eating a parrot tells his master he wants a bar mitzvah to be with his mistress. The cat outsmarts everyone with his mental jujitsu for a while, anyway, the cat and the rabbi have a dream in which the rabbi's daughter died and they kind of make a truce and the rabbi says to her, you can have your cat back but he must never speak again. The volume ends with the cat making the observation that sometimes the most fervent believers have their secret shame and he feels tenderness towards a guy he thought was an asshole because he saw his weakness. The whole book is about the stories that we humans tell ourselves. The arguments we make, the logical fallacies that we use to construct our reality... And if course, a critique of how we perceive ourselves to be the superior species when were riddled with weaknesses and full of holes from our week arguments.

The rabbi's cat, after eating the family parrot, acquires the ability to speak, but the rabbi thinks the cat says nothing but lies and forbids it from talking to his daughter, for fear it will poison her mind. When the rabbi decides to teach the cat the Torah to put him on the right path, the cat argues that he isn't Jewish and must have a Bar-Mitavah before he can be considered as such.
A very clever and amusing tale, with a cat that is irreverent and funny. The drawings are very good, done in an original and expressive cartoon style in which the cat looks different from one frame to the other. The original French version of this series is made up of 5 different volumes (as opposed to 2 omnibus editions in the English translation), and this is book 1 of 5. Este comic está muy bueno al menos en este primer volumen, es para leerlo de manera lenta porque así se entienda bien el mensaje que entrega la obra. El tema de pensar y dudar sobre las creencias religiosas en este caso del judaísmo esta para conversarlo porque es tratado de buena manera, además de tocar el tema del miedo a la soledad por parte del gato el cual es el protagonista aunque a ratos me resulta demasiado introductorio pero no está mal como para empezar una serie de tomos de esta obra que está más que correcta. Una obra que te invita a reflexionar de la religión y no solo puede ser del judaísmo sino a la religión en general el cual está para discutir y reflexionar. Un comic muy notable.

Le chat du rabbin veut faire sa bar-mitsva. Le problème c’est que la bar-mitsva ce n’est pas pour les chats. Cette anecdote est prétexte à une plongée dans le judaïsme.
Le chat qui se voit soudain doté de la parole intervient comme un agent perturbateur qui questionne la religion et en révèle les contradictions. L’intervention d’un animal qui a un point de vue différent, souvent naïf au bon sens du terme, est un procédé fréquent dans la littérature, mais ce chat est un sacré malin et fait preuve d’une éloquence et d’une finesse réjouissantes. Les dialogues sont jouissifs, fins, intelligents et drôles.
L’agencement des pages classique en gaufrier fait la part belle à des dessins très expressifs. Le chat est tour à tour dessiné de façon très caricaturale et très détaillée. Cette alternance est surprenante au départ, mais créée un contraste entre les registres humoristiques et philosophiques. Joann Sfar nous sert un conte philosophique et religieux intelligent et drôle. Un véritable must qu’il faut lire et relire – ce que je viens de faire – absolument.

Suite à mon défi à lire et passer en revue plus d'histoires en français pour améliorer mes compétences, j'ai lu ce tome en version originale. Malgré le format de page structuré de 6-boites, l'art est dynamique. Le chat malin est charmant et divertissant avec ses questions théologiques/ontologiques directes alors que les autres personnages sont un peu plats, mais ça sert à montrer clairement le point de vue du chat–et nous, les liseurs–et ça convient au style mythique de l'histoire. Ça m'a plu et j'ai envie de continuer le série.

I definitely plan to continue the series.
As French-learner reading material, it was completely approachable and very enjoyable. (For those using the CEFR as a guide, I think anyone from B1 would be able to thoroughly enjoy it, while those at A2 would still be able to have a good go and get something from it as well.)

J’ai toujours eu envie de lire cette série car je trouvais les couvertures et dessins vraiment beaux mais après avoir lu le nouveau titre de l’auteur (Héliotrope) qui ne m’a pas plu du tout, j’avais un peu peur de me laisser dans cette série.
Comme le titre l’indique, on suit le chat du Rabbin qui se retrouve doté de la parole. Le rabbin décide donc que le chat n’a plus le droit d’approcher sa fille mais le chat n’est pas d’accord et veut donc avoir sa Barmitsva afin de pouvoir côtoyer sa jeune maitresse adorée. Sauf que ce chat n’est pas toujours très honnête et aime remettre en question les principes de la religion. Ce premier tome parle donc du mensonge, de la vérité et de la religion et tout cela avec un ton parfois humoristique. J’ai bien aimé le style de narration qui entraine le lecteur à travers ses pages sans voir le temps filé. Résultat, je ne suis pas déçue par cette lecture et je continuerai.
Je recommande à ceux qui cherchent une BD informative et drole

Le chat du rabbin est bien malin. Il est provocateur, sournois et intelligent. Il s'agit d'un conte qui te fait mieux connaitre le judaïsme, via le chat du rabbin -qui est le personnage qui prend la parole- et ses questions au rabbin et au rabbin du rabbin. Je me suis plongée dans ce conte, bien séduite par les dessins qui vont avec et qui sont vraiment magnifiques! J'ai hâte de lire tous les volumes qui suivent.

Decidí leerlo porque vi alguna recomendación por ahí, y no me convencí al principio por la forma de dibujo estilo garabato, que no me parece muy atrayente.
Ahora me alegro mucho de haber descubierto esta saga. Incluso el dibujo que antes criticaba me parece interesante y sobre todo muy expresivo.
Me declaro fan incondicional del gato. Es una obra muy adulta, intelectual y profunda. Las reflexiones que se plantean sobre la religión y sobre los valores son arrolladoras.
Me encanta. Muy recomendable.
Ahora me alegro mucho de haber descubierto esta saga. Incluso el dibujo que antes criticaba me parece interesante y sobre todo muy expresivo.

Sfar, using a distinct antrhopomorphic technique offers a critique to orthodox Judaism. A Rabbi's cat suddenly has the ability to talk and converses with it's master regarding it's doubts about the "dont search, believe" dogma that rules modern religion.
The drawings are not per say, my cup of tea, but nevertheless "Chat du Rabin" is a milestone in the alternative BD scene of the 00s.

A friend has told me about this comic book series, but I have never read it. Today I was at the cartoon museum in Basel with a big exhibition on Sfar. They also have a cool little library where you can read at leisure. I finished the first two volumes and enjoyed them very much. I also had a glimpse into some of his other work.

The first third of the book is laugh out loud funny. After the cat and the rabbi leave the rabbi's rabbi, the story becomes much more crass and less clever. Discussions of masturbation and prostitutes seem to only exist for the shock value and aren't well integrated into the story. The first third of the book is delightful!

Une sorte de fable qui a pour personnage principale le chat d’un rabbin.
Une réflexion profonde sur ce qu’est la religion, sur ses adeptes et ses idéaux, teinté tout de même d’une bonne dose d’humour !
C’est également très instructif sur le judaïsme, ça met en regard certaines pensées mais n’est pas moralisateur pour autant.
