This is such a refreshingly disarming, but brief book! Sister Emmanuel (a pen name?) once read about a fellow modern sister who was renowned throughout her country for her lengthy series of visions of departed souls who appeared to her in order to receive Church prayers to shorten their ordeal in the fires.

She visited that elderly nun and received her permission to recount her memories of those visions: this book is the result.

Honestly, the candour and light tone of these interviews (excerpted here) changes our fearful anticipation of the purgatorial ordeal. For these visions tell us these suffering souls have, on dying, steeled their strength for pain, in view of the awesome joy of heaven which they saw when they first awakened here.

It certainly gives us pause for thought.

But most of us believers think there is a great division between the torments of hell and the joys of Paradise - after all, Milton wrote that between hell and heaven is a great gulf fixed.

Maybe so, but what do any if us really know about it? God is said to be Love, and to be able to do all things, and knowing that (and being ignorant of the rest) should be enough, perhaps.

This afternoon, I was once again immersed in the incredibly demanding book by Jacques Derrida called The Politics of Friendship (see my review). Its tortuous pursuit of the devious reasons for some folks’ friendship was enervating.

Derrida, of course, intends his argument to lead us to further awakeness (rather than wokeness, to which I think he is saying Heidegger leads us) so I was plainly misconstruing it. I was only led astray by his blurring of traditional Christian lines.

The evil inherent in the woke world can make us sink, fast.

You know, a lot of us started to feel pretty low and search for a little peace of mind within us when the pandemic hit. Looks like our collective morale has taken a nosedive since. It needs some work fast, I think. I know mine does, and so the book by Sister Emmanuel boosted my spirits.

I guess that, caught up in the fracas of the ongoing daily grind, and forgetful of why we are here from the point of view of the Big Picture, we could use a little motivation.

This paltry life is not the be-all and end-all. Far greater things await those of us who grab the bull by the horns and seize the day.

And for those who refuse, nostalgia for our world of shadow and desire will make them refuse the challenge of opening up to the brightness of the Eternal Light in the next world. Their desination will of course be Hell.

So, reaching for my coffee to relax a bit, I turned to the other books on my e-reader.

This book popped up at me.

Smiling, I opened the interviews of Sister Emmanuel once again and gratefully exhaled;

I then thought to myself:

Oh, you great thinkers of the world - you should know by now that there are many, MANY More Things in Earth and Heaven than are dreamt of in your philosophy!

Outstanding!!!

This book touched my heart deeply. Very moving, I find it hard not bringing it to everyone about this book and its messages.
If you are on the fence about this, more than likely, an angel or God is directing you to buy it.

Interesting, informative, well written quick read. I finished the book in one rainy day. I was mesmerized and captivated by an entirely new look at Purgatory and the souls there today can surely rely on my daily prayers.

Thought provoking

Most provocative thought from this book…that the souls themselves elect to go to purgatory or even he’ll itself! Thanks be to God

Purgatory

Its the best explanation I've ever read on the subject. Many prayers worth using for the holy souls and I also recommend the Pieta book along with it!
