The Key of Astrea is a unique mix of science fiction and fantasy with underlying mystical undertones. This story revolves around the main character Jenny Tripper who is from the ethnic group of the Romani. Her family is bound by a curse that causes early death which soon claims her mother. She desires to be a lot more than a fortune teller that’s when she gets invited by a holographic woman to join the Cabin and save a group of aliens from an interstellar foe.
Does her constant companion, a medieval ghost have something to do with this? The therapists on Earth diagnosed her with mental illnesses, but is she really insane? Is she unique in a way that other people on Earth may not understand? Are there other people like her?

Dive into Jenny’s exciting adventure to know the answers to these questions because you are in for a line of guesswork, new and unexpected territories and a mind-boggling realm.

Nicholas Marson is an imaginative and bold debut author who undoubtedly did an amazing job with the world-building which is fascinating and kept up the excitement in the narrative. While some of the characters were strong and well rounded the others fell flat. I was interested in knowing the characters better and making them more sympathetic could have added another dimension to this book. As the storyline of this book is bold and complex I was able to empathise with the difficulties that the author might have faced while executing it. I strongly felt this could have been made into a two-part book which could have given us the scope to explore this realm, the world and it’s characters more in-depth.

I received the ARC to this book from Book Sirens and I am looking forward to reading the more refined edition of this book.

The Key of Astrea keeps you guessing all throughout, which I love! It has trials, tribulations, inspiration, family, friendship and the sparse pull on the old heart strings. I don't want to give anything away but, Marson makes sure you feel like you are there with Jenny every step of her adventure! Very well written and hard to put down. Not my usual genre and I really enjoyed it; which speaks impressively to the quality of plot and writing.

An imaginative debut novel!
Marson introduces readers to two separate storylines, one sci-fi and the other fantasy, which are eventually woven together into one exciting adventure. Unique characters and inventive settings are described with such detail that it is easy to picture what is happening while reading.
A good read for both teen and adult fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genres.

Marson really knocks it out of the park with his character building, namely the two POVs from which we see the world he's created: via Jenny (the protagonist) and Jack (a down-on-his-luck Han Solo-type).

On with the spoilers...

Jenny's story begins somewhat somberly as we find her mother is afflicted with terminal cancer and Jenny herself suffers from a sort of mental disorder. This really hit home for me because I've lost my mother to this horrible disease, so automatically I cared about Jenny. It gives the reader something to rally behind because you want to see Jenny win. Not to mention Jenny has a birthday fast approaching...

With the death of her mother, and destiny firmly in her path to bring about her own coming of age, Jenny finds herself receiving a bizarre signal (loved this) via a mysterious ghost-like hologram. Jenny is then transported to a parallel dimension through her closet wherein she finds two alien races battling in a galactic struggle. The Selkans need Jenny's help. Her "powers" (or, her disability on Earth) hold the key to helping their race to freedom against the Tyr. But first she has to master those powers.

There's swords and sorcery elements at play here, and even some nods to Merlinian character names and Narnian-themes which deeply enrich the plot. The pace keeps up throughout the book, and Marson is quite adept at giving the reader the bulk of his plot through the natural, snappy dialogue. And by the time Jenny's journey nears its end, you'll have witnessed a young lady grow into the woman she was meant to be. Fantastic!

Jenny Tripper is barely keeping it together: an outsider at school, a ghost only she can see a constant companion, her 17th birthday coming up, and her mother, at the end stages of cancer, has come home for her final days. Living with her Aunt Bea, her mom’s sister, Jenny helps with expenses by reading tarot cards in her aunt’s shop, with the bleak expectation that she will take over the meager living when her aunt passes away. On her birthday, she receives a strange and mysterious puzzle box from her only friend, Michael, but before she can realize its solution her mother dies and she puts it away. Returning to it days later, she finds herself in a parallel universe where the mental anomalies she’d experienced back home were now revealed to be gifts: special powers she needs to learn to understand and control in order to save the Selkans, an alien race being hunted and enslaved by the current galactic rulers, the Tyr.

Jack Spriggan is also just barely scraping by. Previously, in his home star system of Balt, Jack had been an accomplished space fighter pilot but when the First Galactic War was over Balt had been required to dismantle their space fleet, and Jack found himself without his career. Now, in his small workshop on Lan Station, he keeps a roof over his head and food on the table by repairing anything mechanical that come his way. When his friend, Hocco, approaches him to make some REAL money piloting his restored Harbinger spacecraft, the Celestial Strider, he is reluctant at best. Jack is committed to staying on the right side of the law and away from the rebels hiding and running from the Tyr, the peacekeepers and victors of the First Galactic War. But the temptation proves too much and off he goes, not realizing that Hocco’s body has actually been possessed by one of the worst of the Tyr, Admiral Vae Victus himself, and the admiral is hot on the trail of the escaped Selkans.

With elements of fantasy and science fiction, adventure and romance, The Key of Astrea is one of the most entertaining stories I’ve read in a long time, keeping me reading way late into the evening. The story is fast-paced covering a lot of ground, literally planets and parallel universes, in a short span of time. A number of great characters populate its pages. Besides Jenny and Jack, there are a host of good guys, bad guys, and those we’re not quite sure of at times, well defined, and used to build a really good, satisfying story.

Besides the excitement, this is also a coming-of-age story for Jenny and some of her fellow recruits at Cabin, Inc., as they come to terms with their special gifts which, back home, had all been seen as handicaps, and as she deals with the loss of her mother and the discovery of a sister she never knew about. There is a teaser or two at the end that, hopefully, open up the possibility for a sequel. I give this one four of five stars and recommend it to readers who enjoy young adult science fiction/fantasy stories.

Despite having a ghost following her around, Jenny Tripper doesn’t entirely believe in the mystical rituals and beliefs of her family’s heritage. Her life seems to be falling apart at the seams when she learns her mother’s cancer treatments aren’t helping. With only a short amount of time left with her mother, Jenny vows to do as she says and help her aunt with her shop. However, Jenny wants nothing to do with her aunt. When her mother’s time comes to an end, Jenny escapes. After receiving a strange birthday gift from a strange classmate, Jenny is swept away into a completely different world where she discovers that her mental illnesses in her world are supernatural abilities.

Jack Spriggan had fought in the First Galactic War as a fighter pilot. After the war, Jack quickly found himself without a career and a direction to steer his life. When an opportunity arises for Jack to pilot again, he is reluctant to accept his friend’s offer. But the call is too strong and clouds Jack’s judgment of who his friend is.

Jenny and Jack’s story’s cross in the heat of battle and it up to them to aid the Selkans against the Tyr.

After reading the first couple of chapters, I wasn’t entirely sure how the two plotlines were going to match up. Jenny is an angsty teenager on earth while Jack was floating around in space. I was surprised at how the two characters meet. I was not expecting it at all. I applaud Marson’s ability to keep the readers guessing by springing in plot twist after plot twist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and seeing where the plot was going.

I also admire Marson’s character and world-building. I love to analyze texts down to the white space between the lines. I thought there was a lot to unpack about Jenny’s character. I thought Jenny was the strongest and most developed out of all the characters. I enjoyed reading about her family life and their effects on her as a person.

Understandably, I was a little confused about certain aspects of the world near the beginning of the novel, especially in Jack’s POV. I had to read over a few lines a couple of times to have an idea. As I read further,
the plot became clearer.

The Key of Astrea is an action-packed thriller that will captivate you until the wee hours of the morning.

I received this e-book from BookSirens in an exchange for an honest review.

The Key of Astrea is a sci-fi book about not only parallel universes, intergalactic travel and aliens, but also about discovering and accepting who you are.

The worldbuilding is very complex and you can tell that Marson spent a lot of time creating the world(s). The entire story is interesting (although, at times, felt unnecessarily stretched out) and contains many different characters and unique settings.

I had some issues with the writing - sometimes the thoughts of the characters didn't sound natural and were either stating obvious things or felt like an exposition device. Also, sometimes there were some big reveals and the characters either underreacted or didn't react at all.

There were also some aspects that might be problematic, but, as a white person, I cannot say for 100%, they just felt wrong to me. The first, more obvious one, was Jenny, the MC, who is Romani, saying that she doesn't mind the word "g*psy". Now, I know that there are Romani people who really don't have an issue with this word, but when a character like this is being written by non-Romani person, it doesn't sit well with me (I didn't find any info about Marson being Romani). Another thing, that might be less obvious, is the Risi berserkers (the 'wildest' and most violent ones) having dark skin (with Blunderbore it was mentioned multiple times). Again, it just didn't sit well with me.

There were also some clear Star Wars inspiration, especially the first scene with Vae Victus (Darth Vader at the beginning of New Hope/end of Rogue One) and the duel with Riftkeys between Jenny and Vae on Terminal (lightsaber duels). I'm not saying whether it's good or bad. I'm just saying that the inspiration was visible.

Overall, 4 stars. It's a solid sci-fi book, but I didn't feel any personal connection to it.

This is an excellent teen adventure, with a mix of magic, fantasy and science fiction to please anyone. There are 3 story lines that follows the lives of Jack,Jenny(Djangini) and Victus, where they ultimate meet each other in Astrea.

We meet Jack, in a parallel Earth where alien races are common place and everything revolves around space travel. At the moment there is peace, but at what cost when peace is managed by the Tyr. Jack has a repair business but is struggling to ends meet. Until he is tricked into a mission that betrays his whole believe of equality for all races.

Dangini is Roman, but because she gets bullied at school, she changes her name to Jenny and want nothing to do with her heritage. When her mom dies of cancer, she wants to escape her Aunt who enlisted her as a fortune teller in the business. Jenny has a magical gift and on her birthday she gets an unusual puzzle that transports her to the alternate Earth. From there she gets herself involved a magical adventure, game and race to save the Selkans. Will she win the key of Astrea, will she be able to save the Selkans from a horrible fate? Will she allow her true self to come through?

Then we meet Admiral Victus, an enforcer of the peace and victor of the Galactic war. He plan is to steal the riftkey, be master of the Sol system and use the Selkans for their abilities. Will he succeed in his evil plan?

It is a good story, nice adventure, lots of action, some violent scenes, but overall the world building is amazing. In the beginning the story was not really compelling for me, but it was enough to read where this magical adventure would lead me. Towards mid story it is picking up the pace and from there it takes you on a high roller-coaster with a thrilling twisted end that blew me away. Overall, I love the mix of fantasy and sci-fi elements and I would love to see a sequel on this story as there is so much more to it.

What caught my attention was the cover, it left me with mixed feelings. It is simple but drew my attention so I downloaded it and I’m glad I did.

After the first 20% of the book I almost gave up because I just couldn’t get into the story but I kept reading and reading and I realized that the story sucked me in.

What I liked:
world-building. The world-building is so amazing and imaginative. So detailed. I love the different species, it felt like reading a background story from the Star Trek universe.
main characters: Jenny goes through difficult changes during the story, finds out the truth about important aspects of her life. She becomes a confident young woman, makes friends which was impossible for her. Adriana and Kensei are the two people who are very close to Jenny, they become good friends. They are caring and kind who have lots in common with Jenny, they protect each other. I kind of envy their friendship.

What I didn’t like was the ending was too abrupt.

All in all The Key of Astrea is a really intriguing story with great characters and spectacular worlds. I hope there will be a sequel because I want to know what happens to Jenny and the others next and I want to read more about alien species too.

While reading this book, I really wanted to like it but after thinking about it for a couple hours and letting my thoughts process. I came to understand that the negatives that I found outweigh the positive unfortunately.

It was a constant battle of do i like this?/yeah this is pretty good/but then this is wrong here/but its okay it might get better.

I almost considered DNFing but by that point I was already 300 pages deep and figured I can push through the remaining 100.

I truly believe that this story has potential to be really good, if it went through a couple extra rounds of editing by the author himself and his editor(s).

What really bothered me was that almost every single chapter I was meeting the same characters over and over again. Not to mention there are far too many characters in "lead" roles to keep track of. Some characters even turned out to have multiple names and it was VERY confusing when they switched titles.

typos and repeated phrases in sentences. it was just really strange.

I did enjoy the concept, however, these negatives made it an unenjoyable experience to read.

This book was one of my first ARC’s and I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. This book contains elements of both sci-fi and fantasy intertwined which made for a very interesting read. The storyline is unlike anything I’ve ever read before and so I found myself immersed in it. The only struggle I had with this book was that there were a ton of major characters and I struggled to remember who was who. It caused a bit of confusion in the beginning and I had to go back and re-read a few sections to understand what was going on. Overall though, I highly recommend this book to anyone who really enjoys both sci-fi and fantasy.

i received a free ebook in exchange for an honest review. reading the blurb, i was strongly attracted by the curse & story telling. however i had no idea it was science fiction. im very bad with science fiction, a genre i have yet found ways to enjoy. for the book, i read skipping all the scientific parts & focusing on Jenny's abilities. it was a struggle to read, forcing myself toward the end.

I really enjoyed this book. I think the mixture of science fiction with the Romani traditions is very uncommon, and made me like the book so much.

Jenny is a very interesting charcacter. She is passionate about the things she believe. I really enjoyed seeing this new world trough her eyes.

I think Jack is also an interesting character, and a counterpoint for Jenny naivite, and he also shows a lot of personal development.

Overall, I think at the end the plot gets a little confusing, but it's still a really good book.

Ok , at first glance the books overall attraction is unique, the warmth of the colour red , is inviting and reassuring , well for me anyway . People don't take the colour of a book into consideration, but this is what draws me in to partly because of the book cover most of the time, and the title too .
Let's Just begin the next part of this review.
Through the first chapter, Unity , I must admit, at first I thought it was going to be another space book , boring and stagnate and that I just want to pass it up , but to my surprise , it turned out to be rather exciting , in the way that I just couldn't put it down for ages . I meet some great characters here , some I loved and some I didn't , and the best part is you don't really know at this point who the bad guys really are in this chapter .
Moving on , and I really did love the leap between space and New Zealand on earth , such a contrast in the backgrounds , and the obvious people that the story was about at that point in time . I love Jenny , and I kind of relate to Jenny's story before she went to well you know where . I also love how Jenny can do certain things throughout the book and from Gypsies to aliens , space , earth , which pulled me right back into the story especially wanting to get to know Jenny more.
Now each chapter is exhilarating , Exciting , tense , thrilling even in a way . In some parts of the book it made me sad , and feel for the characters .
You get to know more characters , people being betrayed , and mislead , Aliens that come into the story , even if just for one sentence, one page or so ,We also have the Black Rabbit café , someone is awesome at making Milk shakes, or Milk quakes if you prefer. I like the different species in the story and the different jobs they have, I think the author has had a great time making up the different scenes and species , his imagination must be exploding all over the place . I am looking forward to exploring Jenny's talents now , and can't wait to read more on this part of the story . And you also have some more interesting characters to ,like Thatch and how he was a performer , and good at making things like mechanical toys so to speak . More characters like ASTREA of course is another character I liked a lot to and her father , and the more you get to know them the more you think of them as family , and how you know they are here to help Jenny in some way.
And finding out that some were Aeon's , was another exciting turn of events in the story , one has to be my favourite character of this book by far ..

So over all , the whole book when I had finished reading it was exciting , adventuress and contrasting with the places you go to as you skip through to each chapter . I felt like it brought out all sorts of emotions throughout the book and one minute I was happy and the next I was sad, or excited , or scared for the characters I was reading about.
A good book in my mind is one that gets your emotional roller coaster going. And this book did just that , You jump between different places in space and earth ,through portals and just loved the whole experience. There was always somewhere different and new characters to discover , good or bad , From Talking keys , to Gypsies , Aliens , from space to New Zealand , and from a new earth to another .
I will probably reread this book , in my own time this time , and find things that I missed the first time or just forgot. I am glad that I chose this book for my first book to review.
Even though it was 448 pages long I thought it would get boring but I am so happy I was so wrong . I can't wait to read more if he actually writes a book 2 of this story , in fact I hope he makes a book 2.
I was left a bit disappointed by some of the events in the book , but only wish a certain person could go back and change the events for the best , also , there I have spotted a error to, on page 223 ,12 line up from the bottom , (I'm not sure if this is an error or not, from Kensei to head ).
