What if we shared planet Earth with other intelligent species? What if inter-species communication were really possible? Seek out some answers in Turtle Dolphin Dreams... An extremely unusual work of fiction in which three creatures, a turtle, a dolphin and a human link minds through dreams to bring a unique perception of the world. Most of the narration is by the Turtle (via the human) and Dolphin's voice comes through both turtle and human, yet somehow this strange book hangs together and holds the reader's attention.
I was lucky enough to grow up with parents who were thinkers and seekers after knowledge and good ways to develop human potential. This was an enormous advantage that I didn't fully appreciate at the time.
I've always been a voracious reader with my main interests being : human potential, personal growth, trauma resolution, spiritual development, biology, relationships and how they work - or do not, animal intelligence, inter-species communication, philosophy, and many other things.
Having practiced various methods of trauma resolution and methods for personal growth, I met Dr. Frank A. "Sarge" Gerbode in the early 80's through mutual friends and have been working with him ever since. His subject, Applied Metapsychology (including Traumatic Incident Reduction), uses educational methods and a person-centered context to help people to reach their goals and pursue their potential - something that we are developing throughout life.
I find this work endlessly rewarding and have written a book about it, called Life Skills, and edited another called Children and Traumatic Incident Reduction.
Turtle Dolphin Dreams, my little fiction book is in the realm of inter-species communication. More on these books and others currently in the works elsewhere on this site.
I have a private practice, teach Traumatic Incident Reduction and Applied Metapsychology on several continents, and contiue to write.
imagine a turtle that got its head trapped in a bunch of floating garbage in the great wide wonderful ocean and some awesome guy saves him and untangles his tiny lil head from all the junk and throws him back into the water and after the initial splash into the water that is very chaotic and involves a lot of movement, the turtle spreads its arms and begins now to move extreeeemmmeeelllyyyy slooowwww and it floats so so so so slow up and to the left and as you're watching you notice in your peripheral vision a dolphin that is also moving in slow motion and its mouth is wide open and over the span of many slow minutes you witness the turtle float slowly into the dolphins mouth, in a gentle dance much like the ship docking in 2001: a space odyssey and before you know it you can't even see the turtle anymore because it's all the way inside the dolphin's stomach and there it has come to rest happy and intact and motoring away in your beautiful sky boat you think to yourself that the imperceptible physics of the planets themselves had condescended to operate for a few brief moments underneath an ocean
have you ever wondered which resources we could set free if we dreamed together ?
“Turle Dolphin Dreams” is the seam of the dream between the turtle-dolphin-human team, delighting you with waves of vision and wonder. narrated by turtledove – your guide on all things inter-species communication, the story invites you on a journey into the interwoven worlds of these three creatures. as we learn about their different approaches to relationships, pleasure, play and Life itself, the urgency of dreamimg becomes apparent. in six chapters, factual sparks of information on turtle and dolphin behavior engage in a dance with spiritual reflection, illustrated by the cutest little drawings as well as very impressive NASA photos.
TDD is rich in original ideas about hibernation, eggs and our entanglement with the more-than human world. published in 2005, the author pushes forward ideas on kinship, care and community that are equally relevant today as they were 17 years ago. lessons i have taken away from TDD: sleep is really great ! we need not know the gender of the narrator ! water and land, dream and wake, nature and culture are false binaries ! listen ! play ! each life is an egg !
this fabulous work of fish-ction will leave you executing a very splashy double leap followed by a high jump of excitement and happy dolphin noises. i recommend reading under the glow of a full moon before diving into night of sleep. you might have ~waited~ for this story all of your Life and you will surely ~fall~ in love with this book. what a D R E A M !
The concept of being able to communicate with other species on our planet has long intrigued and baffled the human race. None verbal communication with our own kind is almost unheard of. If a species was able to psychically connect with it’s own parents, siblings and mates, would they ever be able to connect to another species? How would that connection begin? How would different species be able to understand each other? Would there be a way for a creature of the ocean (like a dolphin) to ‘talk’ to a creature of the land (like a turtle)? Can a human ever dream of being a part of all that? The information that could be shared and passed along to each participating group could be beneficial to that species and to the world. If only someone was able to ’talk’ to the animals. What can a hibernating turtle named Turtledove tell us about the life of a dolphin? What would we say?
This book caught my attention because of the possibilities. The desire to be connected to others of our own species as well as others. It has been labeled as: Fiction, New Age, Visionary & Metaphysical, that says to me that it is suppose to be a story that describe imaginary people and events, originating not in the physical world, a study of nature and the nature of beings. That being said, this book reads like a memoir of the dolphin as translated and dictated by the turtle to the intended recipient, the human. At times it sounds like a ‘how-to’ in the ways of connecting with other species, while at other times it shows the differences in the way each of them lives their lives. The concept of the ability to connect to others is to me fresh and new, exciting and beautiful. For some people, the way this book is written will be considered quick, easy and straight forward, but for others (like myself) it lacks a personal connection to each of the contributors of the story. It is cut and dry, an exchange of information on an impersonal level. It is fiction with a non-fiction feel (I am not a big non-fiction reader). Still it is a quick and easy read with a beautiful concept.
Title: Turtle Dolphin Dreams Author: Marian K. Volkman Publisher: Loving Healing Press
Turtle Dolphin Dreams written by Marian K Volkman is a thought-provoking tale, told by a beautiful creature named Turtledove. What would it be like to communicate with other species on our planet? In Turtle Dolphin Dreams we have the opportunity to experience communication on a metaphysical level.
Turtle Dolphin Dreams is told through the eyes of a turtle named Turtledove. Turtledove is our communication link between humans, turtles and dolphins in a dreamlike state of consciousness. Turtledove, is our liaison between the aquatic and land world. Turtles can relate to both species due to their ability to walk on land and swim in water. Dreamtime is shared when turtles are in hibernation; this is when they can connect with a specific group of dolphins. We as humans are invited into this dreamtime world to communicate.
Humans are not all that different from the dolphin species. We share family units, food sources, mourn loss, raise and protect our young, feel pleasure and pain and most importantly share the same planet. Often we don’t think about how our actions affect other species. Turtledove shares communication between our two interconnected worlds. Turtledove helps us to realize that we are not all that different.
What attracted me to this book is that it’s fiction; new age genre reads like a non-fiction book. Marian K. Volkman gives us the unique opportunity to interact with other species and enlighten us to the possibilities of connecting on a different level. I would highly recommend this book to older children and adults. It is a great experience of thought provoking, literature. A favorite quote from Turtle Dolphin dreams sums it all up…“We are, each and all, interconnected with every living thing on this planet.”
The author of Turtle Dolphin Dreams is best known for her efforts to improve the quality of life for individuals using Applied Metapsychological methods and techniques. In her recent book, Life Skills: Improve the Quality of Your Life with Metapsychology, the author presented a variety of methods and techniques designed to teach individuals about themselves and about how they as individuals react to other individuals and the world around themselves.
Turtle Dolphin Dreams shares several mutual and complementary aims with the author's past work. In this book, as in her previous work, the author asks the reader to look both inside and outside of him or herself not only to learn to accept him or herself as an individual but also to remind him or herself how he or she fits into this world as a whole. Likewise, in this new book, the reader is also encouraged to dream and to seek out these dreams.
Nonetheless, there are several new and very entertaining aspects in the author's latest book. Turtle Dolphin Dreams is a fictional story written from the perspective of a turtle. This particular turtle, named Turtledove, reflects on his dreams, on the dreams he has shared with dolphins, and on the lack of such dreams in humans. Turtledove also examines the different views of play in these different communities.
This book is really beautiful, inspirational, and craftfully written. It contains a great deal of incite that is presented in such an entertaining way that the reader takes in the information without putting up usual emotional barriers. Moreover, this book leaves the reader with a deep feeling of connection with the world and a strong belief in hope for the future.
Marian K. Volkman has written and illustrated a beautifully imaginative scenario with this book. We have no problem with trying to learn to communicate with other cultures, and even imagine what it might be like to communicate with beings from other worlds, but how often do we think of those other worlds as being right here on Earth?
A fable in the true sense of the word*, the story is introduced by a turtle, named Turtledove for the benefit of humans who think every being should have a name. Turtledove speaks of a time when dreamtime, in winter for turtles during hibernation, became shared dreaming, inter-species, in this case with a specific group of dolphins. The dolphins in turn have been sharing dreaming with other aquatic species but required a species both aquatic and land-going to bridge a gap to humans, hence contact with the turtle.
Whimsical and thought-provoking, inspiring in it's creative message, Turtle Dolphin Dreams was originally written in 2005, but with recent events it may hold even greater meaning here in 2010. The reader is taken through metaphysical voyages of delight, a balance of nature, while remaining earthbound but connected. A truly unique book with several messages presented, a journey worth taking.
*Definition from About.com, fable: A short allegorical narrative making a moral point, traditionally by means of animal characters who speak and act like human beings.
