2.5 stars rounding up...

I’ve always liked Julie Ann Walker’s idea of military veterans running a crew of treasure-seeking men while getting some unexpected thrills along the way, though ‘Ride the Tide’ feels somewhat tangential to that overall theme that Walker’s got going here. The search for the Santa Cristina isn’t what takes centre-stage but rather, a threat in Mason McCarthy’s previous life as a SEAL returning and putting pretty much everyone else in danger.

There are times when I do enjoy the angst of seeing how unrequited-love drama might unfold when it’s written the way I know will be soul-destroying.

Unfortunately, ‘Ride the Tide’ isn’t quite one of them, despite Walker’s fast-paced and pretty good writing that does a solid job of working up the growing tension between Mason and a certain extremely talkative historian who, could either be viewed as admirably dogged or foolishly desperate in her bid to get a man who, for most of the book, pushes her away just as doggedly.

Mason and Alexis Merriweather have always wanted each other, but Mason would never commit to something more after compounding his entire life issues (including PTSD and his failed marriage) into something of a big mess that he couldn’t seem to deal with like the big boy he should be.

On the other hand, Alex’s inability to let nothing but words, words and words fly unfiltered from her mouth made her more like a hormonal teen than a fully-fledged adult, more so because there was so much harping on the issue of her virginity: it was made such a big deal of; it was also implicitly mocked as an entity that she couldn’t wait to shed and that only Mason was the man to do that job.

Having Alex constantly throwing herself at Mason (the pesky virginity issue wasn’t dealt with in a manner I could personally swallow hook, line and sinker as a reader), putting herself out there over and over again despite his rejections was made worse by his inability to do the same up until a reluctant love-confession at the end…all of which left a sour taste in my mouth.

In the end, I vacillated between feeling sorry for Alex and thinking that she could have really done better than to fall in love with a man who needed a huge life-changing, dangerous moment to realise that he actually loved her as well after spending the whole time vigorously avoiding the topic.

The Deep Six crew is one that I’ll continue following but ‘Ride the Tide’ is frankly not a favourite book of mine given how much I was looking forward to this particular instalment. I really wished I enjoyed this one more especially after the huge gap between books, but it just didn't work out that way.

DNF at 39%.

OMG, how can I have read nearly half a book and all I can remember is angst about some woman trying to lose her virginity to a special forces operative with more angst than a teenage girl.

There's a fine line to tread with spec-ops romances. The men have to be tough and sexy and maybe a bit mysterious, the women have to be 'special': clever, feisty, talented, or something else. There has to be danger, high octane action, tension and crackling chemistry between the hero and heroine. Maybe it's me, maybe its because I started reading this book four months ago but honestly I didn't get any of the above.

As a personal aside, as a 50-something year old woman, the idea that a woman worries about losing her virginity and makes a big deal of it seems (frankly) pathetic. You either care or you don't. I honestly don't think anyone else is the slightest bit bothered or would even notice.

Overall, if I'm 39% into a book and I have no clue as to the plot, the bad guys, and I don't have the feels for the hero and heroine then I'm going to pass.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

Formula writing can be good, especially if you like the formula. But, there comes a time when it can turn bad, when you can predict what will happen and you get . . . bored. I'm there with this series. But I did read the three books in this series within a close time frame, so that may have had something to do with it. Hot sexy parts and great action parts. About 70% romance and 30% suspense.

Mason and Alex. The taciturn former SEAL and the geeky historian virgin who wants Mason to remedy that condition for her. Well, Mason has sworn off any female who even smells like she wants a relationship and a 27 year old virgin? That's a given as far as he's concerned. When enemies from Mason's past bent on vengeance stalk him, planning his death, Alex will need to put her campaign to lose her virginity on hold in order to help keep Mason safe. 3 1/2-Stars

The search for the lost treasure of Santa Cristina continues. Alex has tried to hook up with Mason for a while but he believes he is tainted and keeps pushing her away. Of course, she finally gets her way after a bad guy pops up. True love wins in the end. I can't wait to see how Chrissy and Wolf finally get together. Plus who knows what waits for Doc and Romeo

I had high hopes for this crew of former SEALs-turned-deep-sea-treasure-hunters. Longtime Julie Ann Walker reader here, at least most of her Black Knights series. Her formula of zany action rom-coms with alpha military hunks, sassy heroines, do-or-die adventures, and lots of brotastic banter usually does it for me when I need a fun popcorn read. Her books usually defy logic, with kidnappings, assumed identities, drug cartels, international spies, but they are always fun. Unfortunately, this one just didn't work for me. Even with bullets flying in the sunny Florida keys, a whiny, nagging virgin chasing a reluctant emotionally stunted from his divorce dude while being egged on by his SEALs buds was just one fantastic step too far.
"Alex is not for me. And her pressing the issue is gonna drive me to drink!”

“Because it’s every man’s worst nightmare to be chased down by a horny virgin hell-bent on his manhood,” Wolf scoffed.
If I ever heard a guy talking about me like that, he would be in no shape to ever take anyone's virginity. Yet, all of Mason's gossipy, interfering SEAL buds are pushing him to do the deed because Alex has made it clear this is her number one priority. To be fair, she is a 27-year-old virgin but still, have some pride. Yet, even with bullets flying and baddies chasing, Alex basically pesters Mason non-stop to be her first, witnessed by his SEAL buds. This was sometimes whiny, maybe a bit creepy, and a little sad, but it was never sexy or romantic.

From the fire to the frying pan. Or is it frying pan to the fire? Does it matter? No. Because both suck.
5 years before the author released this 3rd book.
👁 🗡 Stick me in the eye now.

Alex? Was she really 27 or more like 17? A virgin? WHO CARES!?! How pathetic does one have to be to continuously throw herself on someone who doesn’t want to be “the one”.
😩😩
I fell asleep twice on this audiobook. What on earth. I waited this long for this ridiculous book? I actually laughed and chanted “shoot her!” at one point 🤣😈.
Good grief. I am glutton for punishment as I move on to book 4. 🥴

Ride the Tide (Deep Six, #3) by Julie Ann Walker

Synopsis /

Former Navy SEAL Mason McCarthy is done being a fighting man. Now he and the Deep Six Salvage crew are working feverishly to find the wreck of the Santa Cristina and its legendary sunken treasure. Unfortunately for Mason's peace of mind, chatty, brilliant historian Alexandra Merriweather has joined the hunt and there's no avoiding her. When a murderous enemy from Mason's past threatens the Deep Six, he must rely on old instincts and the skills he honed from years of running black ops to make sure nothing touches Alexandra. But with their lives on the line and the adrenaline running high, it's inevitable that sparks will fly.

My Thoughts /

Book #3 in the Deep Six series – originally published 24th November 2020. Devil and the Deep (book 2) was originally published on 5th July 2016. Just as well you can easily read each as a standalone, otherwise I would have had to have gone back and re-read books 1 and 2.

The beginning: 17th June 1624. Twas the sea that conjured up the early season hurricane that forced Bartolome Vargas to scuttle the grandest galleon in the Spanish fleet onto the reef. Of the original 224 crew members, only thirty-six survived the wreck. Thirty-six crew who continued to dive down on the sunken remains of the ship to retrieve its priceless booty. Bartolome Vargas would do anything to ensure the Santa Christina’s treasure remained hidden from their enemies….even if it meant all their deaths…

The present: The search for the Santa Cristina isn’t the main thread of the story () but rather, we seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on sub-plots of unrequited-love dramas and how they might unfold. Ride the Tide has all of the key elements you look forward to in a Julie Ann Walker novel, heart, humour, action, and romance. But when the formula gets a little too jumbled (ie. romance, romance, romance, heart, heart, humour, romance, romance, romance and a little action thrown in you get…..bored. So, there you have it, I got bored. Hot / sexy / romance parts, about 70%. Action and suspense, about 30%. All fluff and no substance; all hat and no cattle (go on…look it up!); all icing and no cake; all sizzle and no steak.

The ending: .....was nothing new.

Five years has passed between books 2 and 3, so maybe, I have just outgrown this series.

Favourite Quote: Hell is empty…..all the devils are here

A hot Navy Seal anyone?
It’s been a long time since I’ve read one of the author’s books but I picked this one up at the right time because I enjoyed it immensely and I really recommend it for anyone who is looking for a fresh and fast-paced action romantic suspense novel.
Suspenseful moments full of unpredictable twists and turns, great characters and a romance story that was fun to see building up, especially the banter and chemistry between Mason and Alex.
The side characters are adding a lot to this story and I enjoyed the friendship and trust they have in each other.

Would I read more of this series?Yes
First off I want to thank the publisher Sourcebooks Casablanca for inviting me to read and review it as well as inviting me to join in their blog tour and a big thanks to NetGalley as well, as soon as I saw the email I knew this was some thing I would pick up and read and just for the cover but the story itself , as soon as I started reading it I started felling for the characters and got lost in the story. Every time I said I was going to stop reading it I just couldn't the story had me hooked even though its book 3, which made me want to go back and read the first 2 as soon as I can, its well writing, with lots of action, featuring a tortured hero and a very special heroin, and the story comes to life.

RIDE THE TIDE is the third full-length instalment in Julie Ann Walker’s contemporary, adult DEEP SIX romantic, suspense series focusing on a group of former Navy SEALs who currently own and operate a civilian marine salvage business. The DEEP SIX series is a spinoff from Julie Ann’s BLACK KNIGHTS INC series. This is thirty-five year old, former Navy SEAL Mason McCarthy, and twenty-seven year old, historian Alexandra ‘Alex’ Merriweather’s story line. Alexandra was first introduced in HELL OR HIGH WATER. RIDE THE TIDE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. There is an introductory novella HOT AS HELL that can be found in the May 2015 multi-authored anthology-WAY OF THE WARRIOR.

NOTE: The DEEP SIX series follows six former military or special ops agents who, upon retirement, set up their own business running secret missions behind the scenes. Searching for the wreck of the Santa Cristina near Wayfarer Island, the Deep Six team continues to encounter terrorists and pirates on their hunt for sunken treasure.

Told from several third person perspectives RIDE THE TIDE follows the Deep Six crew on their continued search for the Spanish galleon, the Santa Cristina, believed to have sunk in 1624 near Wayfarer Island in Florida Keys, but on this particular mission, the crew, along with feisty and talkative historian Alexandra Merriweather would find themselves, having been chased down and shot while searching at sea, the target of another unknown assailant. Rescued by the Coast Guard, leaving three dead men in their wake, Mason, Alexandra, Romeo, Wolf, Chrissy, Doc and Uncle John
would find no more security on land when, once again, their whereabouts and safety leaves much to be desired.

As the story line progresses, we are up close and personal with the yin and yang of the relationship between Ray ‘Wolf’ Roanhorse and dive shop owner Christina ‘Chrissy’ Szareck. The sexual tension is palpable but Chrissy refuses to give in to temptation, at least, for now.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Merriweather is focusing on our hero Mason McCarthy, a focus that reveals Alex’s attraction to Mason does not go unnoticed but Mason refuses to accept that he is worthy of love or a permanent relationship. Having loved and lost in the past, Mason struggles with his perception of Alex’s version of a happily ever after but it will be Mason who is unable to forget about the feisty woman who calls to his heart. Mason offers Alexandra one night together but the heart wants something more than he is willing to give. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are reintroduced to several members of Deep Six Salvage, most of whom are former military or Navy SEALs: Ray ‘Wolf’ Roanhorse, Spiro ‘Romeo’ Delgado, dive shop owner Christina ‘Chrissy’ Szareck, Uncle John Anderson (a cross between a ‘crusty sea dog and slack –ass hippie), and Deep Six Salvage co-owner Doc. The requisite evil has many faces.

RIDE THE TIDE is a story of betrayal, vengeance and retribution; relationships and love. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is provocative and tender; the characters are edgy, dynamic and flirty.

At long last, a return to the world of Deep Six Salvage and their search for the Santa Cristina wreck. The Deep Six team comprises six former SEALs who left the Teams after a teammate died. These men share an unbreakable bond, forged in war and just as strong in peace. Not that they get much peace, as trouble finds them regularly. This book focuses on Mason, the quietest of the men, and newcomer to the group, historian Alex.

I liked Alex and Mason. Alex is a historian hired by Deep Six to research and interpret Spanish records about the Santa Cristina. She is smart and sassy and fits well with the crew, most of whom treat her like a little sister. I loved her interactions with them, from the teasing to the support (both for and from) to constant chatter that amuses them. I liked that she isn't afraid to take chances and go after what she wants.

Mason is a man haunted by the things he has seen and done. I ached for him as his history was revealed. His ex-wife did a number on his self-worth, blaming the break-up of their marriage on him being "not normal." He believes that he is too broken for a relationship with any woman and keeps interactions superficial. Mason is quiet and gruff, where a grunt is as good as a sentence. He is protective of those he cares for.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Mason and Alex. The sparks were there from the moment they met. Alex embraced the attraction, while Mason did his best to avoid it. Alex wants something particular from him and is relentless in her pursuit of it. It was fun at times to see the lengths Mason employed to avoid her, but I also wanted to shake him for believing the worst about himself. I liked Alex's attempts to get past Mason's walls and ached for her when he continually pushed her away. The conversations between them were alternately fun and heartbreaking, from light-hearted teasing to deeply emotional confessions. It took some blunt talk from one of Mason's friends for him to realize that he wasn't alone. I also loved Alex's commentary on his ex-wife's claims and seeing its effect on Mason. I loved the ending and Alex's "sparkles and sparkles of hope."

It wouldn't be a Deep Six book without trouble of some kind rearing its head. In this case, two people from Mason's past are bent on revenge and have teamed up to make it happen. I enjoyed seeing it from the different perspectives of the bad guys, Deep Six team members, and the ladies. Each one brought something different to the experience and made the whole thing that much more vivid. The confrontation on the island was a nail-biter with an unexpected twist at the end. The resolution of that twist was slightly anti-climactic but satisfying anyway.

There was a secondary relationship developing during the book. Wolf and dive-shop owner Chrissy have something from their past that creates tension between them. The attraction between them is obvious, but so is the antagonism. There is some lessening of the animosity by the end, but clearly, there is more to their story. I hope the author plans to tell it. I'd also like to see stories for Doc and Romeo.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the third book in this series - and I am loving them all! We have joined a band of people who are searching for the wreck of a ship which was laden with gold which was to go back to Spain. I love the premise of the group working out on an island, blending their skills of navigation, research, archeology etc. If you have not read any of the books yet, then I would absolutely suggest that you start from the beginning, as you will get to understand the dynamics better, and I think enjoy this story even more.

Mason has a strong belief that he is not worthy of love - in no small part because he survived war, and his best (married and about to be a Dad) best friend didn't. He doesn't stink on hookups, so has a reputation as a player. So Alexandra thought it was quite reasonable to ask him to be her first. But instead he turns her down and really damages her self esteem. But they continue to work together and repair their friendship as best he can.

This intense attraction and interest in getting it together simmers along through a large part of the book, as we face a complex and well funded attack on the team. Working out why, and what will happen next gives a very suspenseful feel to the book, and it is cleverly plotted and gives Mason a jolt into remembering what is really important.

Another really good installment to the series, I am looking forward to the next one already!

Former Seal Mason “Monet” McCarthy is one of six partners with Deep Six Salvage. He and his friends are taking a brief hiatus on searching for a particular sunken Spanish galleon. Mason intends to keep Alex Merriweather at arm’s length. However, the smart and infectious redhead has other plans. Mason’s past resurfaces, and it not only threatens his life but that of his friends, too. Will Mason be able to neutralize the threat against him and his teammates? Can he overcome his inner demons?

Alexandra “Alex” Merriweather is a historian. She is hired by the Deep Six Salvage for her expertise in old Spanish scripts. Alex plans to use her findings for her doctoral dissertation. She relentlessly pursues Mason. However, the big and broody former Seal refuses her proposition. Alex finally gets her desire after they are attacked by a new enemy. Can Alex help Mason come to terms with his past? Will she be able to out-smart their enemies?

Mason is such a delicious wounded-hero type. His problem is more psychological than physical. I adore Mason’s pastime. It is just something one does not picture for a big and bad Navy Seal. I like Mason’s natural protectiveness towards his friends. There is little he would not do to keep those he cares about safe from harm. What I love the most about Mason is his respect and admiration of Alex’s intelligence. Most men would find her intellect unappealing, yet Mason finds it attractive.

Alex is a heroine who is not only smart, but she also wears glasses. She is such a firecracker! I adore Alex’s infectious personality. She can easily hold her own around six testosterone-laden former Seals. I like Alex’s willingness to do research. When something catches her interest, she is not afraid to study up on it. What I like the most about Alex is how she never let Mason’s gruffy nature dissuade her pursuit. She understood that it was a coping and protection mechanism.

RIDE THE TIDE is book three in Julie Anne Walker’s romantic suspense series, THE DEEP SIX. I am so psyched the author has returned to this series. It is one of my favorites. The story can stand alone; however, to understand the Deep Six guys’ bonds, and why they became salvagers, it is necessary to read the prior books and novella.

RIDE THE TIDE is a thrilling return to a suspenseful and action-packed series. I do hope Wolf and Chrissy are next. I cannot wait for the next installation.

Thrilling, action-packed story! It was entertaining fun, filled with drama, a whole lot of heart, and passion. Hands down my favorite in the series!

I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! The chemistry between Mason and Alex was incredible. I loved Alex's offer to Mason and how he was trying to deny his feelings and all the sexual tension it creates. Alex is sweet and quirky and I liked how she puts herself out there, she was a force to be reckoned with. Mason’s quiet and a bit gruff, and has some demons he's dealing with and I loved learning his history about why he was holding back. He's such a good guy, so protective and strong and I loved seeing those walls come down as he opened up. I loved those vulnerable moments between them. I also loved the playfulness and their back and forth banter, there was some seriously great verbal sparring happening. I was filled with so much anticipation waiting for them to get together. It was all fantastic!

I really enjoyed how there were different guys from the Deep Six team to focus on, I loved their personalities and what they each bring to the table. They have such great camaraderie. I loved their bonds and the bonds they've formed with Alex. I also loved the building story between Wolf and Chrissy and am looking forward to their story.

The suspense and drama playing out was fascinating. I loved the guys and their toughness but I loved the girls getting in on the act too. There are a few different POVs in play and I liked the different perspectives. I thought there was an excellent flow and good pace. Great details and the build. I also loved how the search for the Santa Christina is set up with the prologue and epilogue. I'm really excited for the Deep Six group and what's next for them.

I am loving the Deep Six series. It's fast-paced and exciting with these awesome characters. I loved the heat, drama, and adventure! It was a fun, exhilarating page-turner!

4 Ride The Tide Stars🌟

Ride the Tide is the next book in the Deep Six series and is a long time coming❣️Suffice to say I had forgotten most of the characters but I did recollect how the last one ended and that was the arrival of Alex😁

This story is multilayered as it focuses on the relationships happening between Alex and Mason and a possible relationship between Wolf and Chrissy, but it also is filled with action that relates to the Crew from their military past. Not too focused on treasure hunting but we did get snippets of this and I expect more to be revealed in the next few books to come🤩

I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and I voluntarily give my honest review❤️

Julie Ann Walker does it again! She manages to expertly weave action, romance and a solid plot into a page turning adventure!

The third book (4th if you count the novella) In the Deep Six series is another well crafted book that will have you flipping pages as fast as you can read them. Mason and Alex's story is heartfelt and will give you all the feels, while the action packed story and plot will hold your interest throughout.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I was certainly drawn to her from the beginnin’. Too bad I had to go and screw it all up.”

What You’ll Find:
✔️Romance Suspense
✔️Tortured Hero
✔️Action Packed
✔️Slow Burn
✔Multiple POV

Former Navy Seal Mason is done with fighting and is concentrating on finding the buried treasure from the Santa Christina. That concentration is broken when Alexandra joins the hunt. When danger from Masons past threatens the Deep Six, he relies on old training to ensure nothing happens to Alex. But with danger comes some serious sparks.

I enjoyed this one. It had a bit of a slow start for me, but once the action started, I was ALL IN! Alex is sweet and quirky, brilliant and chatty. And she knows what she wants. Mason is broody and still dealing with traumas of his past. Putting Alex at a distance. But there is no denying the chemistry they have. Though that chemistry seems to burn in a hot and cold slow burn, they certainly create some steam in the end.

This book is told from multiple points of view which actually worked for me quick well. You got a glimpse of not only the main MC’s but a slew of other side characters. Including the other men of the Deep Six who are such a fun group! Perhaps seeming a bit younger than their stated ages at times, but that was explained a bit too in the book, in a way that made sense. Wolf and Chrissy, are two others you see alot of in this one and I loved them. I hope they’re next! I wanted a little more treasure hunting, but I suspect you’ll see plenty over the course of this series. An enjoyable read full of action, steam, suspense and even humour too.

This is book three in the Deep Six Series but can be read as a standalone. Thank you to Sourcebooks Casablanca and NetGalley for this eARC for my honest review.

If Julie Ann Walker wrote it, I will read it, and love it!
This third book in the Deep Six series is no exception. I loved Alex's fierce spirit and her chatty nature. Her persistent pursuit of Mason was so satisfying because he was befuddled and confused. The rest of the crew's protective nature of Alex, while still honoring their friendship with Mason felt real in terms of that brothers-in-arms bonding that runs deep, but also means friends call friends on their shit. If you're a fan of sexy alpha heroes and fierce strong heroines, you'll love this book!

I started with the 2nd book in this series and it was meh. I do recommend starting with the 1st book in the series. I enjoyed it much better and it convinced me to continue on. In this story, the past comes back to haunt Mason. Too bad Mason isn't aware of it. Instead, he's doing his best to run away from the sex bomb virgin, Alex.

This pursuit to liberate Alex's virginity is pretty amusing at first. Then it gets a bit old for both the reader and Alex. Just do it! Mason's concerns are unfounded and he resists too much. When they finally get around to it, bad guys are crawling left and right.

I'm still waiting to see when the actual treasure hunting occurs. There may be a whole 5 pages on the treasure hunt progress. Recommended to romantic suspense readers who like virgin themes.

It was nice to get back into this world. Julie Ann Walker does a great job inserting enough humor into her books that the serious action doesn't get too heavy. I liked seeing Mason and Alex get together, but I really wish Alex would have moved on from him since he pushed her away so much.

This is Mason and Alex's story. Ms. Walker is one of my favorite authors and I usually devour her books in hours, however, I did find myself putting this book down and coming back to it. I am not sure if it was the lead-up and the backstory on these two but I just couldn't get into it like I usually do. Mason is hung up on his past and how things didn't work out with his ex, that he is pushing away what could be a wonderful thing until he cannot fight it anymore. I am not a lover of angst relationships and the fact that while I adored Alexandra, even I got tired of her dialogue in her head and out of her mouth. There was just too much of nothing that in the end turned up being something. Not too many mentions of the gold and the suspense dealt with someone from Mason's past. All in all, not a bad read. 3.5 stars...

Third in the Deep Six romantic suspense series revolving around a team of retired Navy SEALs and set in and near Key West, Florida. The couple focus is on Alex Merriweather and Mason McCarthy.

This eARC was sent to me by NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for an honest review.

My Take
It's all about revenge, and it just ticks me off that the bad guys always think they're in the right when one of them is killed. Poor baby. I mean, duh... Isn't that part of the "perks" of the job, that you take that chance once you choose to go to war?

Walker uses third person global subjective point-of-view, so we hear and see the perspectives of many of the characters. Think of poor Mason. His ex-wife really did a number on him, convincing him that he is not normal, all of which we hear from his mind. It doesn't help that Mason interprets those 2% stats in the wrong way! But it did annoy me how often Walker harped on this, oy.

Walker very nicely captures the why of these SEALs' brand of humor, as a way to decompress from the violence of their lives. As for her word usage, oh lordy, I kept cracking up. Esophageal eruption? *snicker*

Politics. That decision to invade the Middle East that brought about the rise of ISIS. That's not the only time politics raises its ugly head in Ride the Tide.

Alex cracks me up. She's so determined to give up her virginity and get it over with — and she does live on an island with a group of gorgeous men who think life is one giant bachelor party. As for those fantasies she has, you'll be crackin' up.
"...more than once she'd wondered if it might be possible to run through the house naked and — whoopsie! — fall on his"...ahem
I suspect part of Alex's mission to be devirginized is to force away her memories of that battle in Garden Key.

*Laughing* that contretemps the team and company survives out on the ocean leads to quite the crack up about full autos. Okay, I can see the FBI's point, but still, lol.

Sigh...Walker paints one heckuva way of life for the boys and Alex. I love the thought of that warm weather, the island, and the feel of being at summer camp...but without the camp counselors!

I can so sympathize with Alex's love for history! It's not that it holds all the answers, but I love discovering the different customs and how they came about, how words and the holidays evolved, the different ways people lived, and more.

It's a fun escapist read and action-packed with battle, fights, and chase scenes. Walker has created some great characters about whom I want to read more. *Laughing all the way*

The Story
Yep, Alex is determined to have her front door bashed in. There have been opportunities in the past, but...something always came up, er, down.

Then a vengeful enemy from Mason's past threatens the team, and Mason is terrified of his past touching Alex. But their lives are on the line and the adrenaline is running high, and it's inevitable that sparks will fly.

The Characters
Alexandra "Alex" Merriweather, a.k.a. Baby Bear, was hired by Deep Six for her expertise in reading old Spanish scripts. Part of Alex's problem is those academic parents of hers. Always distracted. Grandpa Gene had been in the Korean War; Grandma Iris had been a hairdresser.

Mason "Monet" McCarthy is an ex-Navy SEAL who pampers Meat, his fat English bulldog, and likes to paint watercolors.

Deep Six Salvage is...
...the new company these retired SEALs are starting up that is based on Wayfarer Island. The rest of his retired team includes Ray "Wolf" Roanhorse, who fancies himself a scholar — and is attracted to the unavailing Chrissy; Brando "Bran" Pallidino who likes to cook; Spiro "Romeo" Delgado is the epitome of sex positivity, loving all women; and, Dalton "Doc" Simmons, a.k.a. Papa Bear. Li'l Bastard is their resident rooster.

Christina "Chrissy" Szareck owns a dive shop on Key West and takes tourists out to the reefs. She's recently teamed up with Seaplane Charters and Deep Six Salvage. Winston is her business partner. Josephine Szareck, Chrissy's mother, fell in love as often as her daughter filled scuba tanks. Doug was the second husband, who taught Chrissy how to fish.

Their former CO, Leo "The Lion" Anderson, a.k.a. LT, just got married to an ex-CIA officer, Olivia Mortier, who has a new-found fascination in baking Hell or High Water , 1). John is LT's uncle and caretakes on the island. They'd all made a promise to Rusty Lawrence. Sarah had been Mason's betraying now-ex-wife. Donna Crestone is Mason's, um, workout partner who entertains plans more intimate than Mason thought.

A former commodore in the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, Izad Bagheri is on his own mission. Kazem is his only living son. Arman and Basir are the sons who were killed. Hettie had been his beloved wife. Navid is Izad's head of security. Turan Jamshidi, a former officer in the navy, Omid, and Mahmoud are the rest of Bagheri's security.

Paulie Gatto rented a speedboat. Rory Gellman is an Army Ranger who turned mercenary.

Ensign Watts is with the Coast Guard. Special Agents Tomlinson and Albus Fazzle are with the FBI. Nurse "Ratched" doesn't like bad language. The Key West Citizen editor has dubbed a group of bad guys The Baitfish Bandits. Gina was a one-nighter for Romeo. Tommy Wilson was Alex's senior year boyfriend. Richard "Dick" Johnson used to call Alex "Gabby McGabberson" in high school. Bobby Joe Cuthbert was a jerk to Chrissy in her freshman year. David "Big Papi" Ortiz was a ten-time All-Star, three-time World Series champ, and a seven-time Silver Slugger winner. That challenge from Cory Taylor was back when Alex was eight.

1624, the Caribbean
The determined Bartolome Vargas is the captain of the Santa Cristina with its treasured cargo. Rosario is the midshipman. Pablo acts as lookout on the island. Alejandro is an older deckhand.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a rising gradient of blues from the dark of the ocean with a ship listing to our right against a stormy sky of blues. It's Mason in jeans and a gray (fitted!) T-shirt, a tattoo on his right forearm rising past his elbow, standing with his back to us, his head facing to the left so we see his close-shaven head and profile. The series info is at the top left (opposite Mason's face) as a white font atop a starred emblem. The title is in white and is centered over Mason's back. Beneath that is a testimonial in white across his backside. The author's name (with an info blurb in between) is in yellow across Mason's thighs.

The title is more metaphorical than about the ocean, for Alex and Deep Six Salvage Ride the Tide of vengeance and dreams.

An enjoyable read, with lots of action, featuring a tortured hero and a very special heroine, “Ride the Tide”, by Julie Ann Walker (Sourcebooks Casablanca), has some very funny and sweet moments between Mason and Alexis related to her issue and their simmering attraction.
It was fun to watch the tortured alpha trying to fight the attraction. I liked the big and grumpy hero and his candid admission of loving Alex despite all his fears. I also liked them as a couple, even if Alex’s issue felt overdrawn.
Suspense, interesting characters and a band of protective alpha males usual in this type of story makes this read entertaining, yet not any different from other romantic suspense books.

This is the third book in this series – and I am loving them all! We have joined a band of people who are searching for the wreck of a ship which was laden with gold which was to go back to Spain. I love the premise of the group working out on an island, blending their skills of navigation, research, archeology, etc. If you have not read any of the books yet, then I would absolutely suggest that you start from the beginning, as you will get to understand the dynamics better, and I think enjoy this story even more.

Mason has a strong belief that he is not worthy of love – in no small part because he survived war, and his (married and about to be a dad) best friend didn't. He doesn't stink on hookups, so has a reputation as a player. So Alexandra thought it was quite reasonable to ask him to be her first. But instead, he turns her down and really damages her self-esteem. But they continue to work together and repair their friendship as best they can.

This intense attraction and interest in getting it together simmers along through a large part of the book, as we face a complex and well-funded attack on the team. Working out why, and what will happen next gives a very suspenseful feel to the book, and it is cleverly plotted and gives Mason a jolt into remembering what is really important.

Another really good installment to the series, I am looking forward to the next one already!

Mason and Alex are opposites. He is the big, brawny, silent type and she is petite, intelligent, and an open book who always has plenty to say. I thought Alex was pretty brave, she makes Mason an offer most men would not refuse but Mason does. Well, for as long as he can resist her anyway. It was great watching her wear him down, with a little bit of pushing from his mates too.

The men of the Deep Six Salvage make a great cast and there are plenty of witty conversations and a few laughs. We also get to see the beginnings of something between Wolf and Chrissy, who will no doubt be the stars of the next novel. And thanks to Wolf, I’ll never hear Escape (the Piña Colada song) the same way again.

I loved the combination of action and romance in RIDE THE TIDE. At one point I got so caught up in the sexy fun between Mason and Alex, that when the story switched to action and danger appeared, I was surprised. Then when things got serious and lives were in danger, I got swept away in another direction.

If, like me, you’ve read Julie Ann Walker’s books before you’ll be familiar with her formula, but for me it never gets old. Reading RIDE THE TIDE is like watching a great action movie only with better sex scenes and a little more romance. This gets a solid four stars from me.

3.5, but rounding to 4 stars because it kept my attention the whole time!

First thing to know, is I did not read the first 2 books in this series. It some ways it was not an issue, in some ways I think it took away a little from the story for me.

The couple can easily be read as a stand alone. But considering the way we get Wolf and Chrissy's point of views in this book, I'm guessing that Mason and Alex were in the last book. So I was missing that relationship/character development that was most done there. With that being said, if I didn't know there was a previous books I wouldn't have missed them.

Alex was an incredible heroine, she was hilarious and basically said whatever popped into her head....

"If it's about my offer to let Mason smash my front door in," she continued, "forget it. Changed my mind. Not wasting my good book-and-butt years waiting for some guy" - she hooked at thumb towards Mason who was choking on his coffee- "to pull the stick out of his ass and realize he's making a mountain out of a molehill."

Mason is definitely damaged, by what he has seen and what his ex bitch of a wife did to him. While he has feelings for Alex, he is having one hell of an internal battle with himself. And honestly, I don't blame the guy one bit!! As you read it, you will totally get it too.

The treasure hunting aspect of this book was probably the only part that was a struggle for me having not read the first 2 books mainly because I was not interested in it. I mean how cool would it be to be a treasure hunter!!

Once again, it didn't take away from the book not having the back story of the treasure, but I definitely felt I wanted more. Which is obviously my own damn fault for not reading the first 2 before starting this one.

In all this was a solid suspense/military read with fun and hilarious characters. I'm definitely going to go back and read the first two in this series. And I can't wait for Wolf and Chrissy.

I enjoyed this long-awaited installment in the Deep Six series. Four years is a long time to remember everyone and back stories, so I wish I had re-read them first. Not that you need to, the story is easy enough to follow and figure out, but it would have been easier to slip back into their world.

I loved Alex and her quirky, nerdy ways. Especially when she rambles while trying not to. I was able to identify with her on most things. The whole virgin thing and throwing herself repeatedly at Mason got a little old and came across as desperate. I began to feel sorry for Mason. Thankfully they figured out their problems….finally, providing a lovely HEA.

As with all Ms. Walker’s books, it’s the group dynamics and camaraderie that keep me reading. She has a way of making us believe these are real people who have history, friendship, and common goals. Add in danger and treasure hunting, and you have an exciting romance. I do wish more time was spent on the treasure hunt, but the threat confronting them was riveting enough to keep my mind off the ship. Danger, battles, sex, romance, humor and tenderness abound. I sure hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next book!

This is book three in the Ride the Tide series about six ex-Navy SEALS looking for sunken treasure.

Alex is having a very hard time staying away from Mason, after he rejected her offer of relieving her of her virginity. Mason is doing his very best to ignore the attraction between them. And in between the will-they-won’t-they tug-of-war going on between these two, there was some explosions and some more searching for the treasure.

I enjoyed this book because of the fast pace and the action. The action is very well written, as always. And I loved the prologue.

On the negative side, the big elephant in the room that Alex just wouldn’t stop talking about and the non-relationship between her and Mason got old after a while. The plot surrounding Mason and his actions during a deployment to Iraq also felt a bit contrived. Obviously, we need some impetus for all the action going on, but this reason was a bit thin.

I definitely want to know what happens to the rest of the crew, and the treasure hunt.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In Julie Ann Walker's Ride the Tide, the third installment in the Deep Six Salvage Navy SEAL romantic suspense series, this story is so red-hot, it sizzles. Mason McCarthy is a former Navy SEAL officer who's looking to settle down with the right woman and to search for a buried lost treasure in the sea. Ever since his ex-wife Sara had burned him, he wasn't looking for romance and closed his heart to find love possible again with someone else. For Alexandra Merriweather, she loves to read and devour knowledge and information from books. But she had one thing on her mind in her young age: to lose her virginity. And she had eyes on Mason for the longest time. While they look for a lost buried treasure, they had some bumps and obstacles along the way including a lurking threat across the ocean that might threaten their happiness. While Alex was looking for love with Mason, he wasn't interested in a forever romance. But when he had to leave to take care of business, he had her in the mind and knew what he wanted in the end: her. On a side note, it was also about Alex's friend Chrissy and her blooming romance with Ray "Wolf" Roanhorse too.

Alex Merriweather loves her job helping the guys of Deep Six Salvage search for the Spanish galleon the Santa Christina. Living on Wayfair Island with them is like living with six older brothers. Except for Mason McCarthy. What Alex feels for Mason is far from sisterly affection.

When Mason left the SEALs he thought joining his team in Deep Six Salvage would help him adjust. But he can't seem to leave the past behind. And as much as he wants Alex he knows his demons are too strong. He's not what a wonan like Alex needs. When enemies from their past come seeking vengeance, Mason is the only thing standing between them and Alex. And Mason begins to realize maybe he's just what she needs.

While I was sorry to see the Black Knights Inc series came to an end, I was thrilled to meet the men of Deep Six Salvage and discover they were just as much fun to hang out with. Mason and Alex's story is a roller coaster ride of action and emotion. I hated that it had to end. It's going straight to my keeper shelf so I can experience it again and again..
