A Steadfast Man

Rate this book
All it takes is one STEADFAST man... Not even Texas is big enough for the seven rough-and-ready Randolph boys. Needing space to make a name for himself outside the long shadow cast by his infamous brothers, Tyler Randolph sets off for New Mexico in search of adventure. He's intent on discovering lost mines overflowing with gold… What he finds is a beautiful woman wounded and left for dead. Daisy Singleton is shocked when she wakes in an unfamiliar cabin, alone with a man she's never met. Confused and angry, all she wants is to leave the shelter of the mountain and track down the villains responsible. Tyler's more than willing to help Daisy find her way, but with her would-be killers still at large, the two reluctant heroes will have to band together if either wants to see another day. One of the men working on my house lent me this book so I felt obligated to read it. I guess I can see the appeal, but it was not to my taste. I’ve never been a fan of westerns—can’t celebrate rugged individualism and the rape of virgin land the way I should, I guess.

There was a lot to look past in this book: the hero is a loner prospector, the heroine a pouty victim after somebody (mercifully for my patience, not Indians) has murdered her father, wounded her, and burned down their ranch house. Daisy is supposed to be plucky but she read to me rather like a brat; Tyler is supposed to be the strong and silent type but came off as a bit of a tyrant with incel tendencies. At least at first. As the book went on, both characters became notable for their inconsistency, changing firmly stated opinions every few minutes. These changes were necessary to keep the conflict and suspense going, I suppose, since the two were powerfully attracted to each other right from the start. If you’re titillated by detailed descriptions of tightening nipples and hard bulges, this book might float your boat; but it had far too much description of raw desire to appeal to me.

That’s all the negative, and it’s not an insubstantial load. On the other side, there was a bit of mystery and a fully developed plot with good guys and scurrilous scalawags and sinister schemers, plus a handful of appealing characters being good to one another in a pinch, some of them in surprising ways. It kept me turning the pages, and I could see why the genre might appeal to many readers. Glad I read it, glad not to read any more.

Awful, awful awful. This is a really boring book. The writing is terrible. The plot is stupid and transparent. The two main characters are just plain dumb. For over 200 pages the main characters are unable to decide if they are in love. Once that hurdle is overcome, the next 100 pages is spent trying to articulate their emotions and decide what to do about it. Just a really bad book.

If the book was half the length it would have been good. It was filled with too much filler and too slow paced until the last few chapters.
