Buckle Up

Rate this book
Life can be challenging at times, and unpredictable, with ups and downs and all sorts of things we can't control. It's like driving a car on a bumpy road. We can't wish the bumps away. We can't control who travels those roads with us, or make the sun shine on our journey if it's a rainy day. But we can control how we feel about it. We can let it make us angry or sad or scared, or we can stay calm, accept the challenges, and make good decisions.

That's what this story is all about. With Nini the bird as your special guide, you will take a driving journey in your imagination, a road trip in your mind, with you in the driver's seat. You'll learn how to face life's obstacles and disappointments with healthy, positive "green thoughts", and wait patiently for the rainbow that will surely follow the rain.

A wise bird, an approachable analogy that’s bound to capture budding young minds, and accessible language carefully crafted to the methodically mapped out pace of the story arc - simply brilliant! An important addition to your child’s bookshelf; ideal for family read aloud time to help calm adults, too!

Engaging with lots of interactive, relatable messages and bright colourful illustrations that jump off the page, all combine to entertain. I especially love the 'Personal Space Zone'.

Sit back, relax, and get ready for the ride–but make sure first to buckle up!
In the book titled "Buckle Up" by Stephanie Scott, the reader takes a little road trip narrated and directed by an adorable little bird named Nini. What will you experience along the way?

The illustrations are vivid and fun, which immediately draws you in. I envisioned myself driving with the fuzzy steering wheel cover–it took me back to my childhood! I loved that the author made sure the readers use their imaginations throughout the book.

Not only is "Buckle Up" about driving but about learning how to regulate your emotions and reactions to situations that come up every day, which is crucial for children...and adults too! Actually, I think adults NEED this more than children at times–especially while driving (myself included). "Buckle Up" shows readers how to face challenges while helping them name their feelings by using a stoplight technique.

While writing this, my youngest daughter Savannah felt frustrated because she wanted to go to the park and had to wait–just like the story-line! I used this book to help her navigate her feelings, and it worked. She took some deep breaths, scrolled through the book, pretending to read it, and her feelings of frustration dissipated.

Teaching children that they may not control what happens around them, but they CAN control how they react is one of the best life lessons and what I believe is the heart of Stephanie's book. But also, no matter what storms we face in life, there will always be a rainbow.

Stephanie Scott has created an excellent resource and a book that every household needs!

Stephanie Scott has written a lovely book to teach children valuable lessons in self-control. In times such as now during the era of social-distancing, life can present all types of new challenges which are completely out of our control. Scott’s debut provides kids and their parents the tools they need to master the bumpy road ahead. Every household can benefit from the wise guidance Nini, the cutest guide, provides its readers in developing self-control and healthy coping skills. A wonderful educational and therapeutic tool!

This book is a great resource for teaching children about self control. It is easy to read and guides readers through an interactive journey in their imagination. I really like the illustrations and the way the text is laid out, with different sizes and fonts to draw your attention to certain words. It's a great way to help children understand how to control their feelings and emotions no matter what happens around them and what obstacles and challenges they face in their environment. They have the choice to stay calm, stop, pause, look around, listen, slow down... Everything is in their control. A wonderful book to have in the classroom and library!

The premise of this book is so fun. Readers are the "driver's seat" and a little bird is teaching them how to drive. My boys LOVE cars, and this created such a fun and interactive reading experience for them. They enjoyed pretending to drive and navigate the road.

But this book is so much more than just learning to drive!! It's also about learning how to deal with the difficulties and obstacles in life. "Buckle Up" teaches us to take mental breaks or repeat "I am patient. I can wait" when we encounter these challenges. I love how the author cleverly weaves this very important message through the analogy of driving and experiencing "bumps" along the way!

This is an intelligently written children's book designed to help kids cope with the difficulties of life. Throughout the story the reader is guided along a road that mimics life's twists and turns. There are good suggestions on how the reader can calmly adjust to the unexpected. The illustrations are bright and there is a cute, feathery character that acts as a guide or mentor through the reader's travels. This book would be a great way for an adult to open dialogue with a child who is dealing with stress or difficulties in their life.

For some children, the ability to deal with stress and challenges can be difficult and they may end up not controlling their behaviour and emotions very well. This book, Buckle Up, by Stephanie Scott, is a wonderful resource to help children better understand the concepts of self-regulation and self-control in a creative and interactive way. Not only can it be used as a resource for educators, it is a story book that all parents should have to read to their children.

Beautifully illustrated! The pictures are gorgeous. The problem I found was that while it looks like a book for young children, it doesn’t sound like one, and there was no goal or definitive direction to the “story” for the budding reader to root for.
