Dr. Samantha ‘Sam’ Smith and Luke Jansen have gotten under each other’s skins since they met 10 years ago on the Royal Australian Naval base. They never thought they’d see each other again until their love of sharks brought them back together, giving their competitive and stubborn natures another chance to clash.
Sam, marine biologist and shark specialist, recently landed her dream job with the aquatic research department at Miami University. When her mentor invites her on the expedition of a lifetime, she eagerly takes the bait. The goal: obtain coveted, groundbreaking footage of Great White sharks breeding.
Unbeknownst to Sam, her mentor has invited one of the best shark experts in the business as well — a certain Aussie diver too arrogant and sexy for his own good. Luke, different after a life-changing diving accident, is the last person she expected to see.
Sam and Luke’s competitive streak picks up right where it left off as Sam realizes Luke knows almost as much about sharks as she does, despite her eight years of education. When a deep sea dive goes awry, Sam has to rely on Luke’s experience, both with sharks and as a Navy Clearance Diver, to get her back on board alive and in one piece. To make matters worse, a reckless rival crew surfaces, determined to beat them to the punch. Amidst the adventure and exhilaration of the hunt, Sam and Luke ignite a passionate spark that they slowly realize may have been simmering all along. If they can make it through with the footage and their lives, they may just have a shot at Happily Ever After.
*The character of Luke Jansen inspired by Paul de Gelder (Discovery’s Shark Week) and his amazing story of survival and overcoming life’s obstacles.
An adult romance writer who has been writing since she could pick up a pencil. After the insanity of obtaining a bachelor’s and master’s degree in cybersecurity, creating worlds to escape to still ate at her very soul. She started writing FanFiction (which can still be found if you scour the internet 😉 ), and soon felt the need to get her original ideas on paper. And so the adventure began.
She lives in Colorado with her husband and two fur babies, and revels in an enemies to lovers trope with a slow burn.
Holy heck! This was a freaking amazing read! It has absolutely everything you could want in an enemies-to-lovers story and if you’re a shark week fan, this is going to totally push you over the edge of fandom!
Ten years ago, Sam met Luke, a cocky, arrogant navy diver that rubbed her competitive nature in such a way she hasn’t been able to forget him. Just as she’s preparing to begin two years of research on the mating habits of the great white shark, she learns he will be along for the ride. Having earned her doctorate, her greatest dream is in reach and now Luke, with no college education at all, will be horning in on her adventure.
This was an amazing story of two people with completely different backgrounds, each desiring to educate the world about a species that is misunderstood, and who now have to set aside their differences in order to get the job done. Sam has her formal education, but Luke has a life changing experience that led to a decade of study. They each have something to offer but the issue is how to make the two mesh.
”Even on amiable terms, Luke and I were destined to be in an endless competition. It fueled us. I loved to be challenged, and he represented that mind, body, and soul because he challenged himself each and every day.”
I loved Sam and Luke’s dynamic. They were snarky with each other but never intentionally mean. The chemistry wafted from them with every interaction and it was just a matter of time before it absolutely ignited into something that would consume them both. Even while they had their competitions and disagreements, the steam sizzled below the surface. And once they let it loose it lived up to everything their previous interactions had promised.
We only get the hero’s point of view during the epilogue, and I’m a hero POV fan so I did miss that, but despite his competitive actions as well as his Aussie nudges towards the heroine, I was pretty confident how he felt.
This book has a lot of wonderful facts about sharks, research and diving but it never overshadowed the romance at the heart of the story and it never once bogged down. If anything, it actually made me more aware of a species that I’ve never taken the time to truly understand. I read this in one afternoon without skimming, loving every single word, action and outcome. It didn’t hurt that there was a lot of lighthearted moments here and secondary characters that added to the story rather than steal the show. There is just enough drama from outside forces to keep the “research” portion of the story interesting and moving forward.
Add in a great epilogue that gives us two different looks into the future and I’m overwhelmingly recommending this as a companion to your shark week enjoyment!

Fairly fast-paced read with a delicious hero, fun banter, and great chemistry.
My husband is terrified of sharks, comically so, and the fact made this book that much more enjoyable for me ;) I really enjoyed the setting and all the shark facts packed inside, and that it was delivered in a natural, engaging way that didn't overshadow the story or romance. I also admire the purpose behind it and hope this sheds some light on the importance of sharks and why they deserve protection.
As for the hero, I have a weak spot for disabled heroes, but especially confident, playful ones. Luke was perfect for me. Loved every second he was on the page. ❤︎
Character Chemistry: The best thing about this book
Plot: We are studying Great White sharks because they are the coolest!
Overall:
I’ll be honest here, I picked up this book solely because I figured it would give me an opportunity to use a bunch of Sharknado gifs.
However, there is a distinct lack of shark attack drama, probably because Spade is a responsible author who does not want to perpetuate the urban legend that sharks are evil eaters of human flesh.
Anyways.
Sam is a marine biologist who specializes in sharks, and has the opportunity of a lifetime when she is selected to participate in a multi-year research trip to study the mating habits of great white sharks in Australia. The only catch? Luke, a former diver for the Royal Australian Navy who drives Sam nuts – and has since they met ten years ago. In the interim, he lost some limbs to a Bull shark and became a shark expert, as one does.
Let’s start with the good: Sam and Luke have excellent chemistry. It helps that the story is told in the first person from Sam’s perspective, so we’re really in her head as she’s processing her feelings for this dude who pushes her buttons but also is extremely physically attractive. They are extremely competitive, so there’s lots of banter, but not in that overly quippy sitcom way. I completely bought the transition from antagonists to lovers, as Spade includes moments of connection, both physical and intellectual, amidst the sparring.
In addition, I appreciated Spade’s portrayal of a hero who had lost both a hand and a leg. He talks about his prosthetics matter-of-factly, and his disability does not hold him back from being a bad-ass while SCUBA diving with sharks.
The not so good: there is quite a bit of extraneous plot that doesn’t make a lot of sense. See, Sam and Luke and their team of scientists are studying sharks, but then, after the 50% mark, we meet a competitor who has decided to also study sharks but for the money? And he’s Sam’s ex from undergrad (she now has a doctorate, so you can do the math about how long ago they broke up) who is doing it also for revenge? I guess it’s supposed to add tension, but cage diving with prehistoric fish with lots of teeth seems like it would provide enough external tension to the love story. It felt tacked on, rather than fully integrated into the story, especially as it had no impact on the dynamic of the primary romantic relationship.
There are also a few minor continuity errors (Sam’s best friend meets Luke, but then later Googles him to see what he looks like) and weird bits of extraneous detail (Sam goes to the bathroom on the plane, and did you know that bathroom planes are small?) that momentarily took me out of the story.
I would recommend this smut to people who dig scientist heroines, or those who care mostly about the chemistry between the leads and tend to ignore all that pesky extra plot. Or people who are really really into Shark Week.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. We disclose this in accordance with 16 CFR §255.
This is the first book I have read by this Author and let me tell you it will definitely not be my last. This book had me giggling in parts, I'm not even going to say about what. You just have to read and if you are Australian let me tell you it is brilliant! The Australian colloquialisms were perfectly done as well! I can't tell you how many books I've read where the author goes clichè. I loved the dynamic between Sam and Luke. This was a funny enemies to lovers romance, with the perfect amount of humor, sexiness and romance. It is well written and flows perfectly.
Looooved this book! I feel like I know so much more about sharks!! Haha the romance part of the book was great! I love that he obviously always liked her but she was too feisty and stubborn to realise it! The writing was brilliant and I'm looking forward to reading more or your work! 😁
Okay, let me be upfront and admit I am a big fan of Shark Week on The Animal Planet so I was kind of tickled pink to see sharks featured front and center in this read. I also want to take this opportunity to just draw attention to a really important detail, Ms. Spade has a note listed at the end of her blurb, “A portion of all proceeds will be donated to shark and ocean conservation.” This is a lovely sentiment and a great reason to grab a copy of this book ASAP knowing your money is going to a great cause.
This story has so many things I love. First, it’s a second chance romance with a ten year gap in between the time Luke and Sam first met until they are reunited. Second, and most delicious of all, it’s an enemies to lovers/opposites attract trope. I might have fallen over in my seat when I realized the friction between them. I did love that the snark was never intentionally nasty.
Sam and Luke have fantastic banter, something that I adore, sniping constantly giving me some much needed chuckles.
However don’t take any of that to mean that this is a lighthearted tale. That could not be more inaccurate. There are some heart stopping moments where survival doesn’t look like a possibility.
I was really impressed with the author’s dedication to research which was very obvious in the facts relayed during the story, well threaded through the obvious romance center.
Even if you aren’t a fan of sharks (I’m a fan of Shark Week… a little anxious about the creatures themselves), I’d recommend grabbing a copy of The Other Tide for a tasty little romance with an intriguing nautical education seamlessly woven throughout.
This book was brilliant, a enemies to lovers trope. The hilarious banter between Sam & Luke makes this a heartwarmingly funny thoroughly enjoyable read! I'm a sucker for accents so given its Australia Vs America it was a battle of the pronunciations 😊 it was equally interesting learning facts about sharks i wouldnt normally of known since i have a fear of deep water and them lol. Another fantasic book by this author and look forward to many more 😊
I love the dynamics between the two main characters, Sam and Luke. Their witty repartee and banter was laugh out loud at times. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was fast paced and fun. A great summer read ... but not at the beach!
I absolutely adored Sam and Luke! The chemistry, the love of sharks, the expedition. I wish there were even more books about their adventures together. If you love an enemies to lovers romance, you will obsess over this book!
I freaking loved this! I adore anything to do with sharks (despite them being my biggest fear) and I love romance novels. So this combined two of my favorite things! Such a fun read. Also looked into who Luke was inspired by and that element just made this story even more meaningful!
Sharks. It’s been a while—okay, never—that I last read a romance novel with the big fish. Hence, going into the book my knowledge of sharks amounted to Jaws.
The Other Tide was far less bloody.
Shark specialist Samantha ‘Sam’ Smith scores the job of her dreams—located in Australia, tagging sharks, filming them mating… Who wouldn’t want a piece of that? Of course, every silver lining has a dark, rain-filled centre, and in this case, it comes in the form of Luke ‘Also-Into-Sharks’ Jansen—Sam’s decade-old rival. What follows is great chemistry, banter and well, sharks, in this enemies-to-lovers quick read.
So, this was a really cute story. Although most sharks prefer and stick to saltwater, I found myself in fresh waters for two reasons: premises/location and male lead. As I mentioned, I haven’t encountered many romance novels centred around a shark expedition, so the little facts and titbits were rather interesting. I also appreciated the strength of the male lead and this time I’m not talking about those harder than a hammerhead’s head (just let me have that one) muscles, but the inner strength that Luke portrays. He is a shark attack survivor who lost an arm and a leg to a (Bull?) shark ten years ago. Yet he still dives with the sharkies. And gets on with life with an attitude of gold. Respect, man. (On a side note, the character is inspired by Paul de Gelder’s story of survival….so again, respect.)
The pace of the novel works well, the best bits always being the back-and-forth between Sam and Luke. All and all, I think lovers of the enemies-to-lovers trope, romance readers in genereal, and (yes-you-saw-it-coming) shark enthusiasts will surely be drawn to this book like a Great White to a big, juicy tuna (or blood—duunnn dunnn).
A contemporary romance with a few twists! Or one main twist, sharks - in Australia. It doesn’t veer too heavily into science but it does give enough information to help you better understand the species and what the main characters are trying to accomplish with their research. It has facts but it’s always light (as opposed to bogged down) when giving tidbits. On the romance side, it’s a fun take on an enemies to lovers relationship. I loved their shared history and dynamic, it was entertaining to watch them tease and annoy each other. The chemistry was a focal point and it was pulled off well. It had me smiling throughout! Without saying too much, the epilogue was lovely. I loved it from beginning to end.
I loved this book. Enemies to lovers are one of my favorite and the way Carly tells the story was very unique. I can't say I ever read about sharks, so I loved the fact that I got to learn so much from this. The chemistry between Sam and Luke was hot. I was waiting for that sizzling moment to go BOOM. And it didn't disappoint. Can't wait to see what Ms. Carly writes nex
Omg y’all, I read this book in one great white bite and fell deep-blue-sea in love with Sam and Luke. Okay I’m done with the corny nautical wordplay, but seriously I was utterly obsessed with these two and their steamy chemistry!!
Dr. Samantha Smith and her mentor Dr. Dorian embark on a 2 year stint on the open ocean—their mission? Discover the mysterious breeding grounds and capture coveted footage of great white sharks mating. Sam’s mentor hires shark expert Luke Jansen (a cocky surfer dude Sam remembers absolutely despising when last they met) who turns out to be a shark attack survivor (inspired by the real life Australian Navy diver and shark attack survivor Paul de Gelder). Marine expedition and hot banter ensue—basically think The Hating Game x Shark Week vibes!
Once again I’m blown away by the writing style of the amazing Carly Spade. She keeps you hooked from the start with lovable characters, quippy dialogue, and an exciting premise with super interesting (and clearly very well researched) subject matter! I had so much fun traveling with Dr. Sam, Dr. Dorian, and their team of sharks experts—particularly the drop-dead sexy Luke Jansen.
As always with this wonderful author, the spicy sex scenes are evenly matched with endearing moments of female friendships and a well-rounded cast of side characters. My absolute favorite scene was when “Doc and Flipper” get locked in the lab together for the night!
This is literally the PERFECT summer/beach read, but honestly I’d recommend this one year-round, especially for fans of swoon-worthy romantic comedies with a strong hate-to-love/enemies-to-lovers pairing!
One thing I absolutely will not abide in any book to any degree, no matter how seemingly minor, is workplace sexual harassment, so when the hero of this book taunts the heroine about having a sex dream, early on in the book while en route to the field site, it was an automatic DNF for me. It’s not something I will tolerate a joke about and it’s absolutely not something I will tolerate as a cheap mechanism to build the sexual tension between the characters. It’s not appropriate, it’s not legal, and it’s definitely not sexy and I do not want to read it. Shame since this book had a lot of other things going for it.
Ahhh this book! I devoured it in a day. I couldn’t stop. The chemistry between Sam and Luke is AMAZING. The story, so good. I loved the setting with marine life and sharks and working together. Australia I wish I could visit. This book had all the goods. I highly recommend. Also the author donates proceeds to the fishes from this book. Loved the romance and swoon and banter. What do I do with myself now !?
Awesome story using Paul de Gelder, shark attack survivor and shark expert, as the main male character. Loved the story! Loved the authenticity of the Aussie language. Made it real. Highly recommended if you love a lot of sass and sharks!

I loved it right from the very start. Sam it's spunky and smart, and Luke is absolutely yummy. The shark expedition makes a fun and interesting backdrop to this romance, and the build up to Sam and Luke's eventual relationship is perfectly paced with the right amount of tension. Highly recommend this one!!
Once again Carly Spade have brought us romance and adventure in her own style. She takes us shark hunting and shows us love at its best. An easy read for days that have gotten you down. This book will brighten you right back up.
I loved this story! I learned quite a bit about sharks and it was filled with love, humor and a bit of sexiness. I will definitely be reading more from this brilliant author ❤️❤️
This was a sweet enemies to lovers romance. Extremely well researched with a great message behind it. Loved this book and would definitely recommend it to any Shark Week lover! This was a great way to pass the day, snuggled up on the couch.
Sharks are a huge fear of mine so throwing in romance made this super enjoyable. I loved the realism and the genuine affection from all the characters. Super cute romance.
As a fan of shark movies in all its forms, I really enjoyed the underwater scenes. The characters were likeable and I enjoyed the enemies-to-lovers storyline.
