The Cottage in a Cornish Cove

Rate this book
A heart-warming tale of discovering all you never wanted is exactly what you need.

Orphaned as a baby and raised by uncaring relatives, much of Anna Redding’s happiness as a child came from the long summer holidays spent with an elderly family friend, Aunt Meg, in the coastal village of Polkerran.

With Aunt Meg’s passing, Anna is drawn back to the West Country, relocating to the Cornish cove where she was once so happy. Filled with memories, she hopes to perhaps open a B&B—and perhaps cross paths with Alex Tremayne again, a local boy she used to have a major crush on and who only had to walk past Anna to make her heart flutter.

Settling into her new life, and enjoying her work for the older, reclusive and—to be honest—often exasperating Oliver Seymour, Anna is delighted when Alex reappears in Polkerran and sweeps her off her feet.

The stars finally seem to be aligned, but just as Anna thinks all she’s ever wished for is within reach, a shock discovery brings everything under threat, and she discovers she’s living a dream that isn’t hers.

Can Anna rescue the new life she has made for herself and, when the testing moment comes, will anyone be there to hold her hand?

The Cottage in a Cornish Cove is the first in a series of uplifting romances from Cass Grafton. Get to know the warm and funny locals of Polkerran, wallow in the charm of a Cornish fishing village and fall in love with romance all over again.

Cass began her writing life in Regency England, enlisted Jane Austen’s help to time-travel between then and the present day and is now happily ensconced in 21st century Cornwall.

Well, in her imagination and soul; her heart and physical presence reside in northern England with her ever-patient husband and Tig and Tag, their cute but exceptionally demanding moggies.

A bit of a nomad, Cass has called three countries home, as well as six different English counties, but her aspiration is to one day reunite with her beloved West Country.

In the meantime, she writes feel-good contemporary romances set in Cornwall and, in doing so, manages to live there vicariously through her characters and settings.

This was a fun sweet story that made me say... aww! I love these feel-good small town stories that I like to call cozy romances, and when they’re set in Cornwall it’s even better. Lovable quirky characters and a delightful quaint setting. Anna has a good life. A job as a project manager and a nice house with lovely housemates. Even though her boyfriend Giles calls her babes *cringe* he is still... tolerable. But when she receives the news that she has unexpectedly inherited a cottage in Cornwall she decides to leave her old life behind (including Giles) and start a new. The cottage brings back her best childhood memories including that of her childhood/teenage crush.

I enjoyed every minute I spent with Anna and the other residence of this small Cornish town. Anna was a sweet relatable character that I would love to be friends with. The romance in the story was understated and cute. This was a charming and cozy tale that made me smile.

What a poignant and beautiful romantic read. I love reading about Polkerran, Cornwall and about fresh starts. Cornwall brings Anna great memories of long summers, and happy childhood memories. Her aunt Meg passes away and Anna gets a surprise inheritance. Anna in desperate need of a fresh start pack up her life and moves to Cornwall.

This is my first book with Cass Grafton and I really enjoyed the easeness of her writing, and the lovable characters in a place filled with good memories. I really enjoyed this read with its heart fluttering moments and swoon worthy encounters with her childhood crush Alex. I love that I was transported to the seaside town of Cornwall. There were some heartfelt moments and was so immersed by this story that I could not stop turning those pages. I really loved this enjoyable read.

I loved this book! As always Cass Grafton's writing draws you immediately into a heart-warming tale you'll not easily forget. I loved the spectacular Cornish settings that were so real I could smell the sea, and the set of characters that inhabit this magical place are warm, funny, intriguing and memorable. I want more Cornish books please, Cass-a whole series to add to this truly excellent romantic comedy!

It’s not that often that I take to Twitter when I finish reading to tell the author (and everyone else!) what a perfect afternoon I’ve had, enjoying their book so very much. But this book was just so thoroughly gorgeous, and so well written – with tremendous warmth, lovely touches of gentle humour, quite wonderful characters, a setting I really enjoyed, a few perfectly handled emotional moments, and such a lovely romance at its centre.

Anna is one of those heroines that immediately wins your heart, with her memories of the happier moments of her childhood and youth, those lovely holidays in Polkerran with her beloved Aunt Meg. Despite the challenges of doing so, Meg’s legacy gives her the opportunity to return, to make a home in the place she always loved. And then there are those memories of Alex, the unattainable boy of her dreams – might he still be around, and now they’re both adults, might there be a chance he’ll notice her at last? Anna is so thoroughly lovely, almost (but not quite) too nice, quite overcome when her dreams do start to come true – and I really felt for her when things didn’t entirely follow the path she’d hoped they might.

The book’s romance comes from elsewhere entirely – unexpected maybe, but entirely convincing, and everything I wanted it to be. And no, I’m saying no more, I’ve stepped close enough to the spoilers already – but I think you’ll love it too.

I loved the setting of this book – I think I could now find my way around Polkerran in a blindfold, it’s so vividly described with its twin headlands and the colourful cottages clinging to its slopes. And I loved its people – Daniel who does the jobs around the house, Ray down the End, Brian up the Top, Tommy the Boat, Colin the Cod, Charlie the Crab (and the reason he got his name!), and so many more. The circle of friends who call round for coffee and cake are simply wonderful, a recurring Greek chorus commenting on the action – and Mrs L’s malapropisms add so much to the humour (in fact, I’m still laughing when I think about the “philanderer”!).

There’s more than enough depth to the story to keep you interested, alongside the developing romance – the possibility that the inheritance isn’t quite as straightforward as it seems, a few people (ok, one in particular) behaving badly, some big secrets uncovered. The whole story is quite deliciously revealed, gently and slowly – and there’s a nice bit of anguish at times, moments when it seems all is lost. And there’s that lovely recurring theme – a bit of a mystery – around following the shells. Do you know, I could go on for ever, picking out different things I loved about this book – if you love the same books that I do, you’re in for a real treat!

I must just mention the dialogue – Anna’s exchanges with her enigmatic boss Oliver are simply perfect, the moments of silence as effective as Anna’s need to fill them. And I really must mention the animals too – Douglas the dog, Thumper, but also the great little character that is Heathcliff…

I just loved this book – and ok, I know you can probably tell. It just fills your heart with joy, with a perfect balance of tears and laughter – and I’m SO delighted it’s the first in a planned series. Highly, highly recommended – just don’t plan on doing anything else on the day you choose to read it!

Had the privilege to read this before publication. The story is poignant with a likable heroine who inherits a cottage by the sea. Just in time too, as her love life and career need an infusion of inspiration. Moving back to a sleepy seaside place that meant so much to her in her youth just might be what Annie needs to focus on herself and reevaluate what she wants out of life. Weighty decisions for someone in her late twenties but that felt authentic, and I liked Annie and all her insecurities as well as her thoughtfulness, loyalty, and courage. I was anxious to know what would happen when she finally met up with her teenage crush, Alex (I am a sucker for second chances), and my heart pounded almost every encounter with Oliver, the handsome mysterious writer (loved) from across the bay. And there is plenty of intrigue about the cottage and her surprise inheritance that kept me turning pages well into the wee hours of the morning. I admit that this story brought a few tears to my eyes — happy tears too. This one is a MUST READ. Smart prose and inventive story—and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

As ever with Cass‘ writing, she paints pictures with her words. In this charming story, she takes you on a wonderful journey along with her central character, Anna. Cass’ writing draws you in so you can imagine being there with Anna ... every tremulous step of the way! Living in Cornwall, the story has a particular resonance with me & I loved every word, so much so that I resented any & every interruption!
I don’t want to spoil your anticipation by giving any details of the plot, but if you’ve enjoyed Cass’ other books, you won’t be disappointed - this is way up there with her best. If you have yet to read Cass’ writing, you have made a great discovery.
Enjoy every page ... I did!

Anna Redding was orphaned as a baby and was raised by her cousin in a cold and unloving home. During the summer, Anna would spend her time with an elderly family friend, Aunt Meg in Polkerran, Cornwall.

Anna loves house sharing with her 2 friends, Lauren and Georgia in Harrogate but is getting fed up with her relationship with her boyfriend, Giles. When she finds out that Aunt Meg has died and left her the house in Cornall and some money, Anna packs up and moves down to Polkerran.

As she settles into her new life she opens the cottage for B&B and starts working part time for historian Oliver Seymour. It’s not long before she literally bumps into her childhood crush, Alex Tremayne. Soon Anna finds out that her wonderful new life is under threat. Can anyone help Anna or will she lose everything?

I couldn’t put this book down! I loved the story and enjoyed learning about all the characters. Mrs Lovelace’s confusion over words had me laughing out loud. A beautifully told story that I devoured. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars.

Review for 'New Dreams At Polkerran Point' by Cass Grafton.

Read and reviewed for Cass Grafton, Canelo, Canelo Romance, NetGalley and Rachel's Random Resources Tours.

Publication date 21st September 2023

HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY CASS GRAFTON!!!

This is the first book I have read by this author but it most certainly won't be my last!!! This is the first book in 'The Little Cornish Cove series' and was previously published as 'The Cottage In The Cornish Cove'.

This novel consists of 30 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

What an absolutely stunning read by the extremely talented Cass Grafton!!! A perfectly gorgeous book!!! The vivid descriptions left me feeling the fresh air of Cornwall and feeling the sea breeze. This may be the first book I have read by this incredible author but it most certainly won't be my last!!!The title, synopsis and cover suited the storyline perfectly.

This book is absolutely rammed full of love, heartache, cake, happiness, friendship, community, cats, betrayal, scenery, loss, dogs, friendship and a very cute kitten!!!! Its one of the most heart-warming and beautiful books I've read in a long time. It made me laugh, cry, smile and fall in love with Polkerran Point. I absolutely loved the gorgeous atmosphere and surroundings being based in the beautiful Cornwall. Cass's evocative writing talents ensures the reader is flown away on holiday where they feel the sand on their toes, hear the crashing of the waves, feel their hearts beating faster with Anna's and will leave you tingling with warmth, smiling with happiness and light hearted!! It is one of those stunning books that it is impossible to say just one more chapter to. I gave up even trying to lie to myself saying just one more in the end as every time I came to the end of one chapter I just HAD to know what was going to happen next and this ended up happening so many times I ended up devouring the whole book in a several hour sitting!! I just could not put my kindle down and I was absolutely gutted when I came to the end of the book! It genuinely felt like I had escaped rainy Wales for a few hours and was soaking up the sun and sea air in the beautiful Polkerran Point. I've not long come back from holiday in Looe, Cornwall, myself and found myself back there in the blink of an eye trying to work out where Cass had based this gorgeous book on. I love the fact that the storyline wasn't a typical romance and didn't end like I assumed it would so a huge well done to Cass as when it comes to romances it is extremely difficult for me not to work out how it will end or what will happen but in this case I hadn't and I also absolutely loved the unexpected twists that you threw in!! I am landed that this is the first book in a series and I cannot wait to get stuck into the next book!!! I am not a fan of classical books but I loved the lovely quotes from classical books at the beginning of each chapter which gave a hint at what was to come in that chapter. Cass does include the heartbreaking subject of Alzheimer's when speaking about Anna's 'Aunt' but doesn't go into too much detail that I felt the need to include a warning. The storyline was sweet, romantic, uplifting and everything you want in a heart warming romance and I completely fell head over heels in love!!! This book is an uplifting breathe of fresh air!!! It ended absolutely perfectly!!!

Clear your schedules and have your tissues at the ready before picking up this stunning page turner as you won't be able to put it down and will get lost on this gorgeous rollercoaster ride of emotions!!!

The characters were all strong, well defined and realistic. I fell in love with the majority of them, even if some took longer than others!! I was gutted when I came to the end. This book is a gorgeous start to what promises to be a stunning series and I cannot wait to meet most of the characters again. Anna is such a strong character and after struggling herself from being treated like rubbish by her absolute @hole of an ex I loved watching her form friendships and find happiness. I became really invested in her and she was such a sweet, caring and unique person who has absolutely no confidence to begin with but it was amazing watching her flourish in the Polkerran community! She is definitely a character I cannot wait to meet over and over again. I'm not going to say anything about the other main characters as I don't want to give anything away but I loved how everything turned out. I really enjoyed learning about all the different members of the community and it reflected a small town community perfectly. There were so many other characters that I really enjoyed meeting and who I cannot wait to meet again. To name a few I enjoyed meeting Lauren and Georgia who I am hoping will visit Anna in Polkerran Point, Oliver, Phoenix, Verity Blue, Mrs Lovelace, Daniel, Jean, Nicki, Jason, Hamish and Mrs Clegg to name a few. I have also got to include Thumper the cat, Dougal the dog and Heathcliff the cat. I am a HUGE animal lover and it is always a HUGE bonus to have animals in books, especially ones who play such big parts!!! I could go on and on but I best stop there as I don't want to give anything away and potentially spoil it for future readers!. Needless to I'm looking forward to meeting them again!!

Get wrapped up warm, put the fire on, make your self a hot chocolate or get your towel and book ready and relax on the beach and clear your schedule ready to get lost in this unputdownable heart warming, gorgeous romantic!

Well done Cass on an absolutely gorgeous book. This is exactly why I would like you to my favourite romance authors list!!! I am thoroughly looking forward to reading more of your books past and future. Congratulations on a stunning success!!

Overall an absolutely stunning page turning romance that will make you smile, laugh and keep you up all night absorbing the pages.

Anna Redding is at something of a crossroads in her life, but then, fate has a funny old way of interfering, and before she knows it, after an unexpected legacy, Anna is soon heading to the pretty seaside resort of Polkerran, in Cornwall, to take up residence in a gorgeous seaside property that once belonged to a much loved family friend. Anna soon finds herself embraced by the Polkerran people, and being in the heart of this quirky community is what makes this book so special. There's such an abundance of lovely characters who help Anna settle into her new life and it is their warmth and wit which really give the story its heart and soul.

The author really knows how to bring the atmosphere of Cornwall alive and I could soon picture the ruggedness of the Cornish coast and felt the sting of salt water and the cry of the seabirds but most of all I fell in love with Anna, she's such a lovely character, the type of person you would want as a best friend, and I could quite easily see myself sitting in her kitchen, sipping coffee, and eating one of her delicious cream scones.

Sometimes a book comes along at just the right time to fulfill a need, and The Cottage in a Cornish Cove is definitely one of those comfortable reads which filled me with a lovely warm feeling of contentment. The story flows beautifully and such is Anna's personality that you really start to feel at ease in her company and only want the best for her but hey, this is fiction after all, and the author does a wonderful job of creating tension in some places and heartwarming scenes in others so that neither one outshines the other.

The Cottage in a Cornish Cove is every bit as wonderful as I expected from this talented author and I'm already looking forward to seeing where this series goes in future stories.

Absolutely wonderful!

I loved this story. The whole way through I was captivated and intrigued by the mystery surrounding Anna and her return to Polkerran for good. So many times I thought I had the story worked out and then there would be another twist. The idyllic location was a beautiful backdrop to the fascinating story being told. There were little touches of heroes and heroines from old classics which I loved. I absolutely adored the ending, it was perfect. If you want to be entertained by a thrilling romantic story, I highly recommend this book.

This was a wonderful escapism read for me. I loved the setting of this book which takes place in Polkerran, Cornwall. It was heart-warming with a chance of real love for the main character. I loved some of the other characters in this book, too. I wanted to transport myself to this quaint village by the sea. It looks like this will be a series. I hope there will be another book to go back to this delightful place.

A cute contemporary romance with a likable main character, a couple of love interests (not a love triangle), and a fair amount of grumpy/sunshine.

A young woman, a Cornish village, and romantic memories are all set up. This book has all the ingredients of a delightful and uplifting read from a clever writer who knows exactly what details to include to establish a setting or character. The dialogue is very authentic, especially in the case of one hard to please character, as it reflects very natural and well observed speech. While some of the the characters are less than likable, there are also warm and supportive people shown, reflecting a fair mix of any society. There are some interesting plot twists, and generally this is an interesting and warm read featuring some interesting people and ideas. I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this uplifting book.

The book opens with Anna in her shared house with her friends Lauren and Georgia, discovering that her elderly friend Meg has died. As an orphan forced to live with unsympathetic relatives, she enjoyed her summer holidays spent at Meg’s lovely cottage in the small and beautiful Cornish village of Polkerran, partly because of the place but also because of Meg’s affection for her. She is contacted by some solicitors who have been trying to find her as she is a beneficiary under Meg’s will. When she discovers that she has in fact inherited Westerleigh cottage and Meg’s money, she decides to give up living in Harrogate, leave her job, and dump her unsatisfactory boyfriend who had tried to insist that she sell the cottage. She decides to move to Westerleigh, which turns out to be as magical as she remembered, and large enough to run a Bed and Breakfast business. She also finds a group of friends who adopt her and frequently come round to enjoy Anna’s baking. The whole place runs on gossip, and she soon finds work as a typist for the mysterious Oliver whose history book she enjoys reading. It seems as if her life could be idyllic, especially when she encounters Alex Tremayne who she worshipped from afar as a teenager. As the tourist season begins and the weather improves, she feels that her work and life in the village are going well, but what of Meg’s instruction to “follow the shells”?

This is a warm and comforting book, an ideal read for winter days or indeed any days when a virtual journey to beautiful Cornwall seems attractive. Anna is a lovely character, and her friends include the lovely Mrs Lovelace whose muddling of words leads to much humour. I really enjoyed this well written and delightful book, and I recommend to it contemporary romance fans and all those who love the idea of a caring Cornish community.

Going back to a happy place of your youth…

Anna did not have a very joyful youth. She lost both her parents when she was just a baby, and was raised by not really caring relatives. The only moments of joy she had was when she spent her holidays with a family friend, who she called Aunt Meg.
When Aunt Meg passes away, Anna returns to Polkerran as she inherited the lovely cottage. Finding herself in the happy place again, she starts dreaming of opening a B&B. in the meanwhile, she works part time for Oliver Seymour, a writer who seems to despise other people’s company.
And when she meets Alex again, her crush so many years ago, she is just delighted when he finally notices her and sweeps her of her feet!
But a discovery may jeopardize all her dreams and not everybody is being as honest as she thought!

What
A
Lovely
Story
To
Read!!!

Initially it took me some time to get submerged in the story, but after a few chapters, I was just in Polkerran myself and I couldn’t put the book away!

Anna deserves to have the life she always dreamed of, having a cottage with only happy memories.
Living at the cottage, she realizes what she really wants, and ideas of having a beautiful B&B are coming to life.
And when she meets Alex, you just hope that he will notice her and be the perfect man for her. Initially he just seems to be what every woman dreams about.
The relation with Oliver is a bit harder (euphemism of the year 😀)… he is a very closed person, not one ready to chitchat a whole day long. But still waters run deep.

The discovery was something I saw a bit coming, but the whole extend came to a real surprise to me! I did not see that one coming!!! It left me agape! But it’s also something this story needed, it made it complete!

It was a funny story, with finding your place in the world, where you can be truly happy. It’s not only about a place you love, but finding a job to do which you dream. Building friendships in new places, opening your heart and not giving up. And also about doing the right thing, even if this may break our heart!

I enjoyed reading it and can’t wait to read more from this author!

What a wonderful tale of love and the search for life’s meaning.

I enjoyed this book from the moment I began the first chapter. Anna Redding is a wonderfully complex, well-drawn character. Orphaned as a child, Anna was raised by unloving cousins. Her only escape had been the summers she was allowed to live with an old family friend who lived in the small Cornish resort town of Polkerran Village. Aunt Meg, as Anna knew her, loved her as the child she never had. When Aunt Meg died, Anna learns that she is the sole beneficiary of the estate. Anna immediately leaves her home and job in Yorkshire and moves to Westerleigh Cottage and proceeds to make Polkerran Village her new home.

Moving to Cornwall brings Anna back into contact with her high school crush, Alex. Alex was several years ahead of Anna in school and never gave her the time of day. Now was her chance to pursue her fantasy romance. In order to make a new life for herself, Anna takes a typing job with Oliver, a grumpy writer of history. Those funds, together with her inheritance from Aunt Meg, enable Anna to begin the process of turning Westerleigh Cottage into a Bed and Breakfast.

The two men with whom Anna is in a relationship, gradually take on a more important role in her life. The question is: which one should Anna choose? The complication in the story is the discovery that there is a second will—one that likely does not name Anna as heir.

I confess that the farther I read into the book, the more I sensed the direction the ending lay. And, I did not like the prospect of what was to happen. Sharing my concerns would unveil too much of the plot. Suffice it to say that a few chapters from the end, the author threw in a twist that brought the story to a wonderfully acceptable conclusion.

I enjoyed reading this book—the first one I have read by Cass Grafton. I highly recommend it. I was given this book with the promise of offering an honest review.

Thank you Rachel's Random Resources and Cass Grafton for the advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

These are my initial thoughts upon finishing the book, and will be fully published on my blog biblioxytocin.wordpress.com

The Cottage in a Cornish Grove was a great read about found family, loss, and finding your place in the world. Anna wasn't really sure how she fits in her world, with her roommates and her boyfriend. She needs a fresh start to her dull life. And so, when she hears that her aunt Meg passed away, not a relative by blood but by bond, and that she was bequeathed her home in Cornish Cove, she decided to call it quits with her boyfriend, pack up her bags, and head to the cottage near the sea.

She is excited to revisit the world she has forgotten, a place she hasn't visited for over 18 years, to meet old acquaintances, and the boy who she had a secret crush on, Alex Tremayne. She is faced with how to maneuver her life in this small town and what is exactly in store for her there.

I really have not much qualms about this book. It was good but I was expecting a little more out of it. There were times when the pace was slow for my liking and would have preferred things to move along a little quicker but we do get a better grasp on each character, their quirks and charms, specially the mysterious writer, Oliver.

I really enjoyed these relationships that Anna formed and reforged when she moved to Cornish Cove, and loved how she grew from moving into an unknown place for herself. Aside from this, the way Cass Grafton described the cottage, the surroundings, and the small town was really charming and mystical that I wish to visit a place like that as well.

Overall, it was a good read. The characters were well developed and the setting was also wonderfully made.

Anna is a character who is easy to like. Her less than idyllic childhood made bearable by the summers she spent in Cornwall, with her surrogate aunt. Careerwise she's successful, but her romantic relationships don't live up to the romantic novels she loved to escape into. An unexpected bequest has her leaving her old life behind, including her career, friends and mercenary boyfriend. She hopes to recapture the happiness she knew during the Summer's in the Cornish cove.

This story is like a warm hug, it makes you sigh, as you snuggle down and get swept away, into a world full of coasts, comfort and community. As the story progresses, you realise that not all the unscrupulous individuals live in the big cities, and Anna's naivety in judging people, risks her new life almost before it has begun.

The characters and the plot draw you in, I found myself, offering Anna advice on who to trust, so the story is certainly authentic and engaging. The pacing is gentle, and the historical inferences and parallels, add depth to the story.

There is a mystery to solve, as Anna finds out who she is, and who her friends are. Her character development is good, and in the end, she realises that even though she has people to rely on, she is strong enough to succeed alone.

The romance is sweet but powerful, and you are left with a lovely warmth, even though you regret saying goodbye to Anna and her friends.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Straight away I could see that I was going to enjoy The Cottage in a Cornish Cove. The book starts with Anna up in North Yorkshire in a bit of a rut with her love life. She longs for something else. When an unexpected letter arrives from Aunt Meg’s solicitor in Cornwall, she knows where she should go – back to Cornwall. Where she had the best childhood holiday memories.

Anna gives up her job and housemates and moves her whole life to Cornwall. To a little village called Polkerran, where everyone knows everyone’s business. Anna reconnects with her old friends, finds a job and turns the cottage into a quaint B&B. Anna starts up a relationship with Alex – a teenage crush from her childhood. But all is not what it seems with him. Personally I cannot stand his character. Anna’s boss Oliver has a sense of intrigue surrounding him. He seems quite rude and abrupt to begin with, but as the book goes on you can see he has a heart of gold.

Life is going well for Anna until a conversation one day with an old neighbour of Aunt Meg’s brings some bad news for Anna and she might well lose everything in Polkerran.

I absolutely loved The Cottage in a Cornish Cove. It has romance and mystery in a beautiful setting. I can visually see myself in the fictitious village, neighbours popping in and out for tea and cake. Gossiping on the locals. This is book number 1 in the Polkerran series and I cannot wait to read more if they are this good!

What better to read on a cold February weekend than a heart warming tale of hope and inspiration!
Anna seems to be enjoying a full life. She has a job she doesn't hate, a home with friends who all seem to have active social lives and are not crowding each other, Anna even has a boyfriend who hasn't been too much trouble, even if he seems like sort of a mooch.
So when she hears that a beloved aunt has passed away, her biggest regret is that she hadn't visited her often enough in recenet years. Life had just gotten busy and her aunt had dementai, and didn't seem to remember or respond as if she knew any more. It came as an utter shock when Anna finds she has inherited the cottage she enjoyed visiting all those summers ago and to find it is valued so highly.
This could be the change needed to spark new life into Anna's present.
She also recalls a summer "crush" from her younger years, a man who never noticed her.

When Anna returns to The Cove, she rediscovers some friendships from her youth and is delighted to find the man she fantasized over now has an interest in her. She also mets a mysterious man on a hill and finds herself working for him. Up close, she discovers he is not at all as he is reputed to be.

So much is going on, you will be glued to the pages. The settings, the emotions, both romantic and about self discovery, will keep you turning pages and saying "one more chapter" again and again.

The storyline of this book is simple. Easy to follow and both relatable and realistic. If I wrote it out you’d be forgiven for thinking it sounded possibly a little, well, bland. The magic in this book doesn’t come from the twisting and turning of the plot though. It comes in the realism, in the imagery, the romance. It feels as though you are diving into conversation with a good friend.

Anna is immediately likeable as a character. Down to earth, the type of person I felt I could have a giggle but also put the world to rights with. When the opportunity arises for her to move from Harrogate in Yorkshire to Polkerran in Cornwall her life starts to move at a different pace. It isn’t a rags to riches tale, but instead one that feels entirely plausible. Grafton’s writing moves you to want the best for Anna as she starts a new chapter of her life, bringing her into contact with friends from the past and people who will shape her present and her future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and although the pace is steady the characterisation is so deep that I couldn’t put it down! I read it in just a couple of sittings, flopping onto the sofa with joy at the end of the day to immerse myself in it once more.

It is the type of book that is great for any occasion – to read before bedtime, during a long grey day, or sitting on a beach in foreign climes.

I am excited to see what comes next!

To state the obvious, I love everything, Cornwall! And as a young child, my parents took my siblings and I there every summer from our home in Essex, and even though I live over 3000 miles away, you can bet if there is a book set in Cornwall, I’m going to read it. So when The Cottage in a Cornish Cove came up I jumped at the opportunity to read it, but I had no idea just how much I would come to love this book.

So the story is about Anna, who parents died when she was 18 months old and who’s cousin reluctantly raised her, until her parent old neighbor “Aunt Meg” invited her for the summers in Polkerran, and they were the best summers ever. But Aunt Meg has passed on and Anna has inherited her cottage, and Anna heads down to Cornwall to start a better life, one that involves nosy neighbors, her childhood crush and new boss, novelist and grumpiest man alive Oliver Seymour.

I want to say that I am SO ridiculously happy that I picked up this book, this story was SO magical and reduced me to tears! The characters were simply wonderful and I will be buying this cook in paperback so I can treasure it forever! Or maybe just read it when we lose power in snowstorms.

Clear your calendar the day you start this beautiful book! You will not be able to put it down. You have been warned.
In The Cottage in a Cornish Cove, Cass Grafton grabs you from Chapter One and takes you on fabulous trip. She paints a vivid picture of Polkerran and its charming inhabitants that makes you feel like you are actually there. Equal parts humor, mystery and of course, romance - I didn’t want the story to end.
Anna is a realistic and relatable character and it’s easy to root for her to find her way to happiness in her new home. There are plenty of giggles (and a few laugh out loud moments) in her interactions with old friends and new. There’s a touch of mystery that keeps the pages turning right to the end. And of course, there is romance to make you weak in the knees.
I also loved the literary references that prefaced each chapter. So very clever.
Having read Ms. Grafton’s other novels, and knowing what a gift she has for storytelling, I am not at all surprised to have found that she has managed to conquer another genre. I don’t know where she will take us next, but sign me up.

I loved the cover for this book and it suits the story so well!

I thought that this story was great, I really warmed to Anna and at times really wanted to give her a massive hug – it was lovely that I was able to follow on her journey! I thought she was a well-developed character and I loved the interaction she had with the different people she met along the way!

I thought that the setting for the book was great and the author did a great job bringing the area to life and setting the scene for me, it was a lovely story to read and one I was able to escape with after a long day at work.

It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars on Goodreads and Amazon - I thought it was a really enjoyable story that was well developed and was a heartfelt read – very highly recommended and it was a pleasure to read!

This is such an enjoyable read which takes you back to Cornwall to Polkerran which is beautifully evoked. The story has warmth and is uplifting- just right for a cold, windy February day. Anna ia a likeable character who unexpectedly inherits a cottage in Polkerran which leads her to change her life. With memories of long summer holidays spent there in her childhood, she finds a sense of home and belonging.

At the centre of the story is a mystery which looks as though Anna could be about to lose the home she has found. Through her actions, Anna shows an honest nature and accepts others' eccentricities. You want it all to work out for her and for her to see through some people's dishonesty. For a time, she sees what she wants to see but as the story develops, Anna grows up a little. I found Oliver to be a great character. Brusque and secretive, he has a hidden side which is slowly uncovered.

In short: A real page turner

Thanks to the author for a copy of the book

A lovely, heart-warming contemporary romance with a setting that is a character on its own. Anna Redding inherits a cottage from an elderly family friend, with an expectation that she lives there. So she packs up her things and goes to Cornwall, where she is reunited with Alex, who she used to have a crush on when a girl. In between her job as an assistant to a reclusive writer, Oliver, she sets up a B&B business at the cottage. Then things start to go wrong and Anna wonders if she will have to give it all up.

I quickly became immersed in the story, cheering Anna on as she tries to decide what she wants from her new life. There's humour, intrigue and lots of emotional twists and turns in the book, and Anna's character is beautifully drawn. This would make a wonderful summer read but it certainly cheered up a few wet wintry March evenings! I'm definitely looking forward to more books in this genre from Cass Grafton.
