This homage to classic Gothic ghost stories features an abandoned rectory with an unsavory history. An Anglican man of God is assigned to Wharton Parish. He arrives with with his traditional new bride, Lily, and her flamboyant, modern sister, Rose. The old house with its noises in the night drives Lily to escape into dreams of a handsome Irish rogue. Whose secrets will be exposed on the lonely English hill?
I love this story! The author has a way of luring the reader into the mind of her characters and into the heart of their most desperate situations. I was enticed into that spooky house. I'm pretty sure I felt the ghost touched me too! And I fear the same malevolent ghoul will be in my dreams, just the way it was in the main character, Lilly's. Do not, I repeat, do not read this before bedtime, unless you love having your spine tingle just before you turn out the light.
