Quitters Never Win

Rate this book

Some people are born to be a certain thing.
And I was a born fighter.

At the age of eight, Michael Bisping began his training in martial arts. By the time he was 15, he was fighting in his first no holds barred competition. When he turned professional and joined the UFC he was sure about one thing: only a world championship title would do. A British underdog in the greatest fighting championship on earth, he spent the next decade winning some of the championship’s most sensational contests to achieve his dream, becoming the first ever British UFC world champion in 2016.

From his boyhood years learning to fight in the gyms of Lancashire to his most shocking clashes in the cage, in Quitters Never Win Bisping tells the raw and unfiltered story behind his legendary career for the first time, including his greatest wins, his fiercest rivals and the harrowing injury that forced him into retirement. As audacious, entertaining and as candid as the man himself, it’s a backstage pass to one of the world’s most extreme sports and an unbridled account of what it really takes to become a champion, from sleeping in his own car to reaching the summit of the world’s fastest growing sport.

I will admit it I am a huge Michael Bisping fan, who had been following his career from the time he was just a UFC prospect right to the end. I am so happy with what he achieved and earned the respect her deserved. Michael would probably hate me saying this but his life is like a real life Rocky story.

The book is amazing. I did not want to put it down at all. Michael honest about his past, mistakes and learning experiences as well. The fights are like a show of adrenaline. Reading through them as a blow by blow account made me feel I was right there. This is what I love about autobiographies, when it comes to fight especially, you only get the emotions the person of what the person is feeling at that moment from the person who was there. It is a testament to the writing the it was translated so well on paper. Also I can his post fight career as a fight analyst in describing the fights, training, and his real life as well.

One of the things that I relived through this book is I know exactly how hard it was too get training at this time period. People did not know about strength and conditioning, except people at the elite level of trainers and in this country even many of them were just scratching the surface. So a new sport like MMA was probobly while having the Scarlet Letters on you. I grew up being told I was not a real athlete (despite destroying everyone i knew on strength and conditioning exercises), as I was no good at football or cricket. It was not till I found martial arts (kickboxing specifically), that I myself (first) and people changed their opinion. To this day the lessions I learned in Martial arts are still paying dividends in every aspect of my life.

The book is amazingly detailed, cheekily funny. Dispite living in America the last few years Michael definitely has not lost his British sense of humour. It is a thank you to the people he helped him achieve is dream from fans, friends and of course family. However the biggest factor is hardwork. Michael took his opportunities but it was his hard work that made them and him a success. Another important from the book is knowing when to walk away. This is especially hard for fighters.

There is is Martial arts quote sixtimes down seven times up. Michael is the epitome of this just look at his UFC career. As stated he holds the record of being knocked down in six fight only to come back to win them. The book also show the difference of Michael Bisping the character (promoting and selling fight), and the real person. More or less the same person, just one is slightly more exaggerated and animated. The mark of a great autobiography is if I feel I am a bigger fan of the writer after I have finished it that is definitely the case here. Awsome book.

The first chapter of this book had quite an impact on my psyche. So I put it aside for awhile. MMA fans will surely enjoy the history lesson, but this has so much more. The raw honesty, heart and soul of the man Bisping became pursuing something he loved for those he loves. The editing was disappointing. Doesn't anyone actually read anymore?

That was honestly everything I hoped for. Super entertaining, and I felt like I was sitting in some pub with Mike, while he was telling me tall tales. His thoughts on his fights were also genuinely enjoyable to read. A surprisingly compelling and fun read. Never change, Bisping!

Good book to read

As a mma fighter I've watched on the tv since his appearance on TUF I enjoyed reading his book. I was expecting to be disappointed as I did like him, but the book is entertaining and he's a lot more humble than his tv persona

Finally, we have a truly great MMA biography.

Michael Bisping, somehow, became my favorite fighter towards the end of his career. The courage and the dogged determination earned my respect and a little later I even got used to his wicked sense of humor.

These attributes are on full display in an autobio that is relentlessly dramatic, funny and, more than anything, human. I’ve been a UFC fan for over 10yrs and I thought I understood the pain and fear these guys have to overcome in every fight– I read this book and felt like Jon Snow (who knew nothing).

Bisping’s journey from a factory job in the UK to the world title, via a million setbacks, injuries and crazy situations, read like a novel based on a Hollywood movie.

I had no idea that he went to prison as a young man. He makes it very clear that he was under no pressure to reveal that part of his life, but wanted to be honest with the reader. The guy is courageous in and out of the Octagon. The prison story was made for a very exciting opening to the book – as did the story that begins with the line “When I was 17 years old, someone came to my house to murder me.”

Bisping’s descriptions of his major fights are better than anything you’ll ever read on MMAJunkie or ESPN.com. I felt like I was in there – facing Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson and all the other giants of the sport. He’s refreshingly honest about how each fight went (eg admits with almost a pride that he was very close to getting KO’d to Silva and Hendo in rematch) and how he made the adjustments in real time to win inside the Octagon.

At over 400 pages, the book is significantly longer than other MMA autobiographies (Ronda Rousey and BJ Penn’s were 300 pages for example; Chael Sonnen and quite a few others were closer to 200). And yet as I reached the chapter on his fight with GSP, I began to feel like I could have gone on for another 200 pages or more.

Bisping’s distinctive wit and way of speaking practically leap off the page. Like I said, I became a fan a while ago but after reading this I’m a bigger fan than ever.

This was an exceptionally enjoyable book. Michael Bisping is a remarkable human being. Growing up in Clitheroe, a small-town outside of Manchester, he was a working class lad who literally sky-rocketed to fame due to his pioneering work in UK MMA. My mother is from Manchester, so I've long had a sense of personal relation with him. It's become something of a cliche to describe Bisping's heart as his greatest characteristic, but it really is. You'd know this without reading the book and just by watching his fights -- especially his now legendary one against Anderson Silva. The book details all of the ups and downs of his life in a very well-written style and with great humour. If there's anything I really took away from it was his self-sacrificial love for his family. It actually brought a tear to my eye a few times. And added benefit to reading the book was getting to re-watch his fights online. What a neat thing to read his in-depth description of, say, his title win against Rockhold, and then go and watch it online. It added a layer of depth that I don't get from many books. Bisping is definitely someone who would be a lot of fun to have a pint with. If you want a fun, entertaining, and uplifting read, I'd highly recommend this.

You can’t pick a more inspirational MMA or just a plain combat sports career. When I was growing up I never really liked traditional sports like basketball, baseball or football, the first sport a genuinely enjoyed where combat sports. The first UFC fight I ever watched was a Mike Bisping fight, I followed his career until he retired, this book really made me cry his story was full of tribulations but he rose up when many journalists or fans doubted him and became a champion and more. If any young fighters or fans out there need to look at an amazing real life story of grit, determination and true belief in one self I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. 10/10

I really liked this book! It may be the best MMA book out there. I wasn’t a fan of The Count in his early days, but post UFC 100, and the way he called a bunch of fighters out about TRT usage, I became a fan. He has a great story to tell, and is definitely worth the read.
If you are a UFC/MMA fan check it out!

I don't know much about the UFC or fighting. But I do like to read about inspiring people who exceed the expectations that life has set for them.

The story of Michael Bisping was inspiring. It showed that you have to go for your dreams. Even if the people around you don't believe in you. You have to believe in yourself and want to win.

The book also showed how important it is to have people in our lives who see that we can grow and go far. The support of these people will help us achieve even greater things.

In the book, Michael Bisping told his story. The book showed his growth as a man, an athlete, a father and a husband.

Believe in yourself and if you are willing to work hard, anything is possible.

Believe you me, as "The Count" would say, this was a long and at the same time, unbelievably interesting listen. Autobiography of THE pioneer of British MMA and UFC.
The thing is, just out of inadvertent accident, I was introduced to MMA and UFC. Mid-watching the first fight, I googled UFC, downloaded all the events to that date and basically binge watched all of the in the upcoming weeks. All the events that are mentioned in the book are still fresh in my mind. As far as I remember, the TV "personality" that was shown from Bisping was most of the time as the bad guy, the Ying of light heavyweight and after that middleweight division in UFC. Nevertheless, love him or hate him, there was no chance that you wouldn't enjoy a Michael Bisping fight.
The book itself starts with his heritage and basically covers his career as a mixed martial artist, many predicaments of a pioneer in the sport and more importantly the struggles of dealing with people who want to feed from your success by the ways of trust. The title of the book is well chosen though, since if you wanted to summarize the mindset of Michael Bisping in a couple of word, consistency and perseverance would be on top of the list. Love the character and his analysis and commentating of the recent UFC events.
Overall, a great listen, but for the enthusiasts.

PS: I burst out of laughter during the last chapter when I heard the "Unofficial StrikeForce Middleweight Champion" as his achievement, referring to besting Luke Rockhold in an sparring session.

An autobiography by the greatest British (or Cypriot?..) MMA fighter of all time~!
At least as of September 26, 2021.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It's fucking awesome. And I am not even a fan of Bisping's, mind you! I've been following UFC since 2006, so his entire career - from TUF to HOF - from The Ultimate Fighter to the Hall Of Fame, it unfolded real time in front of my eyes. Most of the time (if not all of the time), I was rooting against this British prick. **With all due respect.** He was arrogant - or should I say cocky - and I didn't feel like his skill was on the level of his smack talk. And, honestly, maybe it wasn't. But boy did this guy work his ass off.
His life was a real journey full of highs and lows that unfolded almost poetically. The read is captivating, because you feel his pain and his joy - his struggles and rewards. Plus, some significant life event are presented in such an original [almost lyrical] way, that it really strikes a chord with you: for example, the UFC 100 fight against Hendo. You're like reading "I accepted the fight... blah, blah... we're going to coach the Ultimate Fighter... yada, yada... I have months to prepare for the fight... babble, babble". So you expect the lead-up to the fight, the training (everything) to unfold predictably step by step in the next 20 pages or so.
BAM!
Suddenly - right after him accepting the fight - you are 'teleported' to him standing in the shower, comatose, having lost months of his memory, trying to get his wits about him after one of the most brutal knockouts in UFC history. It was so raw. You felt that moment. That was some outstanding writing.
Somehow, these Brits never seize to amaze me. I read a lot of (auto-)biographies, but these Brits have a knack for slapping together some of the most entertaining and gripping bios I have ever read: this one takes it's due place next to Ozzy Osbourne's and Tyson Fury's opuses. Bravo.

I didn't go into this book thinking I'd enjoy it much - I'm not particularly interested in MMA or the UFC. However, a friend lent it to me, and since I decided I'd read anything this year, I decided to give it a shot.

And boy did I love it. Bisping has a very conversational style to his writing, and I really appreciated that he's not trying to objectively narrate his life, but he writes each experience so that the reader feels like they are reliving the experience with him. You get a great insight into what he's feeling at each moment, and this isn't something that you can get with all autobiographies. Honestly this may very well be the best autobiography that I've read in a while.

Recommended for - anybody, honestly.

This was a refreshingly honest autobiography by one of the sport’s most polarizing figures. Bisping’s humor shines through and improves an already inspiring story.

Some autobiographies drag on and include a bunch of unnecessary information. This one was not that way. This was a super fun, in-depth look into the life of a UFC legend and, while I knew of Bisping already because I love watching MMA, I’ve grown a newfound respect and appreciation for “The Count” after hearing his story.

Followed Michael’s career ever since I got into MMA. I remember watching when he won the title and couldn’t stop cheering. I always knew his story was tough and inspirational but this book was beautifully written and gave a rare glimpse into the mind of a fighter overcoming the odds and achieving his dreams. Very inspiring.

It might sound strange to say it, but Quitters Never Win: My Life in UFC by Michael Bisping and Anthony Evans gave me all the feels. I laughed. I cringed. I cried (just a little bit). And I loved what a softie Bisping really is when it comes to the people he cares about.

You might think a book like this would be a weird read for a romance author and it would be more fitting for the side of me that loves to train kickboxing and Muay Thai. But this book hit both sides of me. As a fan of combat sports, the tenacity and the grit and the perseverance were awe inspiring. As the author of love stories, I was enamored by the way Bisping described the relationship between himself and his girlfriend/wife.

I did not watch UFC when Bisping was fighting – well, I did, but it was begrudgingly through my fingers while my husband watched, and I cringed at how disgusting the sport was. I had no appreciation for the sport or the athletes who competed in it. That all changed when I realized I had a knack for throwing kicks at the heavy bags in the gym and fell in love with kickboxing.
Fast forward four years, and my love of kickboxing expanded to include Muay Thai (knees and elbow strikes are badass!) and my trainer and I often discuss the fights during the week. It’s become somewhat of a way of life for me at present.

Watching the weekly spectacle of UFC introduced me to Michael Bisping as a commentator. He’s a funny guy and he made me laugh, while explaining what was happening on screen so newbies like me understood what I was watching. Now I follow him on Twitter, and Instagram, where he shares his training videos and things like that.

Somewhere along the line I realized he had a book out, so I knew I had to read it. Which brings me back to my review.

As a fan of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), this book offered incredible insight into the extremely demanding life of a professional fighter. The sacrifices they make and the punishment to which they subject themselves is no joke. The physical toll on their bodies can’t be understated. It’s a brutal sport. But the drive to compete in that arena is relentless.

The descriptions of training before a fight were inspiring, while the descriptions of the injuries suffered were sometimes stomach-turning.

As a writer, the details of a fighter’s life and career gave me tons of inspiration for stories. A good story brings you into it with the small things. Watching fights all day long would never give the kind of real-life details of day-to-day life, or impact of injuries during a fight, that I picked up from this book.

As a writer of love stories, the way Bisping wrote about his wife, Rebecca, warmed my heart. She was the backbone of his whole career, his whole life. And he wasn’t shy about admitting it.
Quitters Never Win is an excellent book full of insight, humor, grief, the highs of winning, the agony of losing, and the love of family. I highly recommend this book for anyone who’s a fan of the sport or looking to write those MMA/boxer/fighter romances with a bit more authenticity.

What a fantastic, brilliant book this is! I was unable to put it down, This guy is amazing and this is probably the best autobiography I've ever read. I recommend it to everyone whether you're an MMA fan or not. It's a real life Rocky story of Rags to Riches and if anyone deserves it, Michael Bisping does. This is also a prime example of doing something you love and making a living out of it. Bisping is a role model for people who should Carpe Diem and make something out of your life. I experienced the full gamut of emotions reading this and Bisping for all his arrogance and showmanship on the UFC shows himself to be a skillful wordmaster too. A brilliant example of a boy from a tiny village in the north of England making it big on the world stage. A phenomenon, a legend, a world champion!

Undoubtedly one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read.

Michael Bisping’s had a fascinating life and career in MMA and really made his mark by becoming the first British UFC Champion in history. As I write this, we still have yet to see another British UFC Champion which makes his achievement even more incredible.

His story is told with the help of Ant Evans (Professional Combat Sports Storyteller) and gives us a blunt, honest view on his life story (similar to his persona in fact). It gives the fans an in-depth behind the scenes look on his life, relationships, struggles, achievements and his career ending injuries.

Must read for any MMA fans.

Highly recommended!

I listened to the audiobook.

Truly one of the best autobiographies I’ve read (listened to).

I’ve followed Michael Bispings career from his appearance on the Ultimate Fighter 3 through to retirement and absolutely loved hearing all about the ups and downs of his MMA and acting career. The thing I possibly enjoyed the most though was his pre-UFC career and the stories away from the octagon.

Mikes a really entertaining guy so it’s no surprise his life story is just as entertaining as one of his fights.

I’d recommend this whether or not someone is an MMA fan or not.

Was an enjoyable read and Bisping's humour comes across well in the book.

I've been a fan of his for many years and was interesting to read his journey to winning the UFC middleweight title and challenges he faced along the way told with his great humour and funny anedotes along the way.

I particularly enjoyed learning more about the issues he faced with his eye and the ongoing anxiety he had about fear he could be told he couldn't fight again.

He gives what I feel is honest view of his career and his opponents.

Best MMA book out there

Fantastic book. A must read for MMA fans. Quitters Never Win is a well written biography with plenty of stories from the emergence of Mixed Marshal Arts in the UK to the heights of the UFC. Bisping's story from everyman to UFC Hall of Famer is full of highs and lows. Bisping's grit and determination despite his many set backs makes for an inspirational read.

Legend of the sport

A true insight into the life of a professional mma fighter. He carried the UK on his back his whole career and fought with injuries that most fighters wouldn't have even. Thought about stepping into the octagon to fight for his family 1st legacy 2nd. Wish him every success in everything he does next as he deserves it.

This was an enthralling read from cover to cover - I've followed the UFC from a distance for a number of years and recalled some of the fights in here, but it was just great to hear about it from the man himself. Highly recommended whether you're a fight fan or not, truly inspirational story!
