I received a copy of the blood oath box set, of which this is the third book, through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.
I did not particularly enjoy this book. It wasn’t terrible, though! I likely wouldn’t have finished it or written this review if I didn’t feel obligated to, however. The plot idea was good, the characters were largely compelling, and the setting was spot on.
There are 3 main reasons that these books didn’t score higher for me.
1. The ending. It sucked tbh. It was out of character for the main character to just accept what was foisted on her against her express wishes, completely contrary imo to her adherence to her morals and tenets in face of all challenges and her fierce independence. That’s like... central to the essence of El. So I did not like that.
2. I do not recall this much in the first book, but I felt like there was a lot of non sequitirs where I was like- what the heck? Did I miss a page?, and I found the punctuation off at times?
3. The characters in this series were well chosen, but after a full intro they were pretty one dimensional I found? For example, in these two, Jason -apart from professing his love for El and ‘I MUST protect her!’ - was kind of a non-entity? And lots of Deus Ex Machina type rescues etc. I’m a lover of character driven stories, so this didn’t engage me well. And what was the significance of Odin? I expected him to play a bigger role?
So that is the explanations of why I am even writing a review, and what turned what I thought would be a 5 star for me into a 3 star.
All that said, I think these books, this plot line, these characters all had great potential! I can see that many other readers thoroughly enjoyed this series, and my points are opinion points by and large, so it’s a matter of personal preferences. If the blurb attracts you , I recommend you try it for yourself and see if it is to your tastes.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy to review
I'm not sure how I feel about this book, I only realised it was the third book in the series once I finished (lol). Despite this, I wasn't too lost throughout the story, and it was not a bad read. However I was constantly waiting for a climax. The plot was interesting, but I wanted more depth on each scene, and more tension to be developed. I liked the fiery but gentle personality that Eloise has, but I would've liked to see more of her inner thoughts and conflict, as well as that of those around her. Given their stressful situations, I think it would have been beneficial to the storyline.
I was put in touch with is author, new to me, through 'Voracious Readers' and generously given a free copy. This was a difficult one to read mainly because I found it hard to sustain an interest. Normally, for my, as a reader, I love being completely immersed in the story. That's what reading is for me escapism. The main issue I had with this book is that I wasn't reading anything new, nothing that hasn't already been done/written before. A book for young adults interested in this genre, just not one for me.
Book 3 continues this thrilling series. With in depth, relatable characters and tons of action this story sucks you in from the beginning. I coudn't read fast enough - I needed to know what happened next. Excited for more from this author.
