This engaging book contains selected writings of prose and poetry from different periods during Sharlot M. Hall#39;s lifetime. The range of subjects is vast, including travel, natural history, cowboy slang, politics, museum curatorship, and insight into the woman herself. These pieces paint wonderful word pictures that quickly pull the reader into the narrative. Hall#39;s humor brings a smile or a chuckle, and her candor reveals her deepest feelings. From personal letters to unpublished articles about Arizona, Sharlot Herself reveals the private side of this remarkable woman#39;s life.
Sharlot Mabridth Hall (October 27, 1870 – April 9, 1943) was an American journalist, poet and historian. She was the first woman to hold an office in the Arizona Territorial government and her personal collection of photographs and artifacts served as the starting collection for a history museum which bears her name.
I really enjoyed this slim book which featured a variety of the types of writing of Sharlot Hall during her lifetime. She wrote poetry, articles on the flora and fauna of Arizona, artiicles on the native dwellings she had visited, noted pioneer slang, and more. She was a remarkable force of one for preserving Arizona history in her day, and her namesake museum in Prescott, Arizona, is testimony to this.
This is an interesting read for anyone who lives in Arizona or who loves the history of that grand state. In addition to reading this work, a visit to the Sharlot Hall museum in Prescott is highly recommended for all you history aficionados.
