This web serial is an enjoyable portal fantasy that mixes action, adventure, romance, slice of life, and some nerdy historical weapons and armour couture!
The set-up is a fun one. Years ago, emissaries from another world, called Geamhlúrt, arrived on Earth looking for help to save their world which was being overrun by monsters. In the end, they created an online game, Gleamheart, which mimicked the abilities and conditions which the Geamhlúrtan powered heroes had to face, using it for research--and to find suitable candidates to be summoned to Geamhlúrt as replacement heroes. Now, desperate for help, the Geamhlúrtans have summoned thousands of unsuspecting gamers to their world in new, super-powered bodies.
With this being a straight continuation of what we got in the first 8 Parts of the story it was just a continuation of Angela (our lead character) and her small guild, The Angels of Fury, settling into their life as the paid defenders of Idhnar. They were still staying in Governor Albhais’s town mansion. It was a cushy gig compared to the camp life of the Spire where most other Heroes still live but it did still require a bunch of monster hunting and fighting. It also mean that Angela and her team had to try harder to acclimatise to local culture since they were living in a Geamhlúrtan town.
This second collection was not quite as much fun as the first one but still had a decent balance of action, slice of life in another world, romance/character dynamics, and armour/weapons couture. It was a compelling enough read and the characters are pretty easy to root for.
I quite like the fact that this series remains a compelling read despite being somewhat slow burn. We still have a lot of mystery surrounding the Geamhlúrtans leadership and the world and even still a fair bit of mystery about the human lives of half the team with talk of life back on earth having become pretty taboo for the summoned Heroes.
I’m not sure I loved the harem elements that developed in this batch of instalments but on the whole I do like the characters as a group.
All in all a pretty fun portal fantasy with a story that seems to have plenty of life left in it. Hopefully the author returns to it one day as it seems to have been abandoned with no new instalments since 2021. Which is a real shame as this series is better than most indie fantasy and LitRPGs!
Rating: 4 stars.
Audio Note: No audio so I was listening via Alexa. It is passable for the most part but no true match for proper professional audio narration.
Liked it as much as the first compilation 1-8. Will keep reading. Funny the author even mentions The Last Starfighter, which I was thinking about when I read the first one. Still some holes in the plot, but great world building regardless. Great slice of life here and there between battles. Beyond adding to the team which was good I think for the next one I hope for a little more character development and growth making lives in the new world. Maybe crafting some gear, getting and improving their own place, furthering relationships with the locals as their language skills improve maybe introducing us to some of them, working on finances with ideas from old world adapted for the new, etc, to show they are adapting and in it for the long haul.
As yet, the narrative has not convinced me that retreat wasn't possible for the people they are protecting. Maybe just leave this last island to the "bugs'.
