For Cinderella, every day is the same: clean the house, cook the meals for her stepmother, and try to survive high school with her stepsisters: bubblegum-pop-princess Tiffany and moody, hard-partying Danielle.
However, when Cinderella meets a mysterious stranger from another land, she learns that maybe all her life needs is a little bit of magic...
Cutesy and easy to read. The magic bit was a little odd, and the ending was probably what every 17 year old would want but isn’t exactly smart or healthy. Overall it was fine.
A fun light Ella retelling - Boss Baby meets A Cinderella Story movie
Loved this easy-to-read Cinderella retelling - laden with 1989s references, it’s an upbeat teen movie-style HEA book. Having a toy and a Wicked character for fairy godmothers was brill. Meet-cute with the celeb was also nice and one stepsister wasn’t horrid. All good and sticks with the genre and the tale.
The two things I’m going to grumble about are: 1. the boy not taking a stand against the stepmom at the prom (okay, it’s difficult to stand up to adults, but still, that felt like such a coasting copout (I’ll chat to you and be with you when it’s good but when things get tough, “Maybe you want to sort things out”?; 2. Cinderella being called Cinderella - it would have been better if she was called seomthing else. But, having said that, it’s probably easy to read for and to pre-teens as it’s clear which fairytale is being retold.
Recommended for lovers of lower-to-mid YA clean Cinderella retellings.
Liberally sprinkled with 80 's references, this Is a light teen version of Cinderella. The prince is a pop star (no, not that Prince) and the ball is a prom. It's a light, fun read that's fairly true to the source, with plenty of mentions of David Bowie.
Cleanly edited, it's well written with fairy tale over the top characters. An example of the writing:
"Pushing the door open a crack, Cinderella looked inside. As expected, Tiffany was standing in front of her TV, practicing her dance moves to the glaringly loud Wham! video. As she pumped her arms, bopped back and forth like a wind-up toy, and sang along with twenty-two percent of the correct lyrics, Cinderella was able to stop herself from laughing. However, when Tiffany doubled over and began bouncing her butt up in the air as if she was trying to shake something off it, that’s when a snicker escaped Cinderella’s nose."
A cute but very strange take on Cinderella. Very well written and like all good Cinderella stories, had a happy ending. The strangeness and the twists only get a couple of brief and vague explanations and I really wished there had been more there (though that probably could be a book in an of itself). I also wish some of the build up to the book's current day was at the being as opposed to being told to us in bits and pieces through the story. Again, that probably could be a book by itself. There was a lot going on, but it didn't leave us hanging at the end and it didn't leave us lost at the start. All in all, it was a good story.
I loved this book because it wasn't like the original version of Cinderella, but with the same storyline. I had a step mother who disliked me as much as Barbara did Cinderella. I can't imagine treating anyone like that. What I would have loved to have a magic mirror. It does feel good in the end to finally feel relief of how you feel. Life is too short not to have your happily ever after.
The 80s nostalgia was fun but this Cindy had a whole lot more freedom than most do. I would have liked way more information on what and how her father did what he did, why she wasnt allowed to go through her parents things in the basement, and why didn't she take them when she left. Those are the parts that really intrigued me and I wanted to learn more about.
This was okay. I'm a sucker for Cinderella retellings so I couldn't not read it lol There wasn't any horrible content; some cussing; the stepmother was having an affair with the mayor and the one stepsister was always staying at her boyfriend's house. But other than those few things, I really enjoyed it.
The story idea while interestingly filled with memories of music from the 80s and dad's ...The writing was a bit inexperienced, but it has promise . I do hope the author keeps working at it his story idea was different.
The Cinderella trope is easily my favorite. Consequently, I have read a lot of them. I enjoyed this version a very great deal. A fresh take that had humor and swoony moments. Highly recommend it.
