I think this is my go-to guide now. Being both a teacher and a student of yoga, I’ve read my fair share of books, but only few are as comprehensive and digestible whilst managing to maintain nuance as Lucy Lucas’ Yoga. I think this book especially does a brilliant job at relating the multi-layered history and philosophy to the yoga we know nowadays. Similarly, the often accounted experiences of yoga practitioners are beautifully explained by current insights from science, considering movement science, neuroscience and psychology.
The gorgeous illustrations and design complement all that is explained in text, making it tangible and practical. I also really love the diversity in body types used in the illustrations! The section with poses and movements is very diverse, offering many options as well as inspiration to change things up. I think this book is incredibly relevant and accessible to a wide range of practitioners: it can serve as an introduction to beginners who are looking to learn more, and as a reference guide for seasoned teachers. If you’re completely new to yoga, some sections might require deep reading or mindful reading, i.e. pausing and taking the time to read since yoga has such a rich history and philosophy, but don’t let that discourage you from getting this gem.
