In 2018, Terri Jockerst, a mature woman with an urge to break free from the everyday and to travel over the distant horizon, set off on a solo adventure through Sri Lanka. What followed were four weeks of astonishment, confusion, joy, and bargaining, as she travelled by train, bus, tuk-tuk, and jeep from the chaos of Colombo, to the cultural centre of Kandy, through national parks, along beaches, and into the misty mountains. Terri saw ancient ruins and revered holy sites crowded with pilgrims. She came face-to-windscreen with a hesitant bull elephant, chased monkeys from her breakfast table and lost count of the many peacocks in the parks. She walked along railway lines, hiked high plains, peered over the abyss at World’s End and swam in the clear blue sea; activities all powered by mountains of rice along with short eats and hoppers. To all those people who wish they could break free and adventure forth in the world, this is the book to show that “Yes, you can!”
