What a dud.

#2 in a series. Not marked anywhere on the book until the ending author’s note...it should be marked on Goodreads now, but there was nothing to warn me that a major plot section is to do with the wedding of the leads from book 1, which has nothing to do with the mystery or romance part of this novel: around 50 wasted pages of bland wedding plans and chat and teasing about a hot guy. I felt like I was missing a huge part by having not read book 1....then I got to the end and realized...Wait a minute, I DID read book one mere months ago, and these characters are acting completely differently from before! I didn’t even recognize them.

Physical romance alone.
He’s a jerk. A self-absorbed guy who wants his way or the highway. Makes mistakes and the only one he admits is the one where he wallows in having lost his wife and has a panic attack when getting chased by a killer but somehow he still knows best. These two show over and over again that they are completely incapable of adult communication....but they get tingles and hots and all sorts of stuff after mere days. If the attraction was that strong, why didn’t they get to know each other a little before this as neighbors? I feel like they’d completely forget each other if they spent a month apart.

Illogical sequences.
You know you’re getting chased by crazy rogue spies and you don’t have a lookout while all the good characters are in the same room where they can be surrounded and eliminated? You don’t have your friends go watch the parents’ home to catch whoever might snoop on it, then act floored when someone’s abducted? You have a gun in the woods but don’t watch someone’s back and get into yet another hostage situation because you dropped the weapon? Hm....there was just too much that didn’t add up.

I’d advise skipping this book and trying a different Goddard novel. I’ve generally enjoyed her books a lot; this one was just a mess.

Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

Katelyn Bradley is a good private investigator but she tends to focus on the "private" and prefers to work alone. This can be a problem when your family is involved in law enforcement and you are prone to take risks! Beck Goodwin is clearly a marked man but it's unclear just why. He suspects that his late wife may have been a victim of evil but was she also unfaithful to their marriage vows? Katelyn steps in to help him figure it out, but will her aid come too late? Are Beck and his young son Ollie in extreme danger?

Some of the characters from Deadly Evidence, the first book in the Mount Shasta Secrets series, make appearances in Covert Cover-Up, but this is a book that can easily be read alone. Katelyn and Beck are both intriguing characters who've both been hurt by past relationships and I enjoyed seeing how they work to overcome them. Is it possible for two damaged people to find a happy future? Could it be together?

Non-ending action, intense danger, and an intriguing mystery make this a book that you won't want to put down and there is also a light faith element that offers inspiration. Covert Cover-Up is another entertaining story from Elizabeth Goddard and I recommend it to all who enjoy Christian romantic suspense.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own opinions.

Another enjoyable fast paced book by Goddard that will keep you in the edge of your seat to see what happens next.
Typical Goddard style she puts her characters Katelyn and Back through their paces to all solve the mystery of Mia Beck's wife.
I loved every minute of this book! Some excellent twists and turns Andover held by breath in certain scenes.
I love how Goddard keeps her readers interested from beginning to end with a little romance added in along the way. I thought the romance part was perfect and not too wishy washy.
I liked Katelyn immediately but I felt there was more to Beck than Katelyn realizes!
I like Katelyn because she asks God for help on their journey. I like how she talks to Him like he's sitting next to her. I like do that too!
In time, I began to love Beck for the person he is.
I highly recommend this book! An excellent author Goddard is!
My thanks to Netgalley for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Covert Cover-Up is the second book in the Mount Shasta Secrets series. The main characters from book one, Deadly Evidence, do make some appearances in this novel, but it is not necessary to read book one in order to understand book two.

The action took off quickly in this story. It was clear that Beck was looking into something that someone did not want known. Something they were determined to keep hidden. And although I liked the action in this novel, I was not very fond of Katelyn and Beck, the main characters.

I was frustrated by Beck’s unwillingness to share information with the police, and even Katelyn frustrated me at times when she and Beck willingly hid what they were looking into and went places without letting anyone know where they would be. They made everything so hard on themselves by not seeking backup support from Katelyn’s family, who were also in law enforcement.

I did grow to like these two characters more as the book went on and was happy when things finally started going their way.

Private Eye Katelyn Bradley steps in to help stop an intruder in her neighbor's home. Widower Beck Goodwin just wants to raise his son in a safe neighborhood, but unknown secrets from the past threaten to unravel everything.

A fast paced read, filled with suspense, mystery, and action that kept me on my toes. This author is quickly becoming one of my favorite Christian suspense writers, and this novel is another article in favor of that. I loved the tension in this story of never knowing what would happen next, or if they were safe for even a moment. Plus, the characters were well crafted, I loved the character arcs, and how they grew in their faith.

Taut with tension, with great character interaction, faith, and a plot that had me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this action packed read, I couldn't put it down!

Gripping from page one and turns into a curvy mountain thrill ride until the last page. Full of mystery and suspense that has an unsolved murder which needs reconciliation in order to stop the current threats. Fast paced with a budding romance that has you thoroughly engaged. This author never fails to pull you into the story and make you feel like you are there. I look forward to reading more in this Mount Shasta Secrets miniseries. Put this on your need to read list.

I didn’t like how long it took Beck to disclose what he knew (which wasn’t much!) and none of them knew what the deal was until near the end of the book. That wasn’t very enjoyable to me. I would have liked to have been clued in earlier. I did enjoy this book enough though and liked how it wasn’t an automatic proposal at the end, like most of these books have!

"Covert Cover-Up" is a romantic suspense. Unfortunately, I didn't care for it because Beck kept tearing Katelyn down until she started doing the same to him. Seriously, statements like 'And just how do you think you're going to do that?' or 'you're not able to do that' (when they could, especially with the other person's help) are not romantic. I'm also tired of "Christian" books that make physical attraction the driving reason for the two to get married. Beck and Katelyn felt an electrical current every time they touched and couldn't resist their attraction. If they built each other up, attraction is great, but it shouldn't be the reason to marry when it's a verbally abusive relationship.

Beck always had to be in control and was very domineering. Katelyn gave decent advice about what they should do to investigate, but he refused to listen her and kept doing whatever he wanted. This usually put him and Katelyn in danger and made the investigation take much longer than it had to. Only once did Beck actually follow her advice...initially. But then he wanted to barge into their attacker's house and confront him rather than call the police like she suggested. Yep, he's not very clever. Especially since Beck assumed that the people after them were trained assassins (apparently, all CIA agents are trained assassins) even though they didn't seem particularly skilled (as another character pointed out). Even though Beck is not ex-law-enforcement or ex-military, he still believed that he's more able to take them on than Katelyn.

Worse, he kept forcing Katelyn into the role of damsel in distress. When they're in a fire, he wraps her up so that she cannot move and then "heroically" carries her out of the house. It would've made more sense for them to both crawl out of the house, but he didn't give her that option or even ask her permission. But she's grateful for being rescued and doesn't seem to mind being a damsel in distress (which is odd for an ex-cop). Some parts just didn't make any sense. Like, why did the man who's trying to kill them both leave Katelyn after knocking her out when he had a perfect chance to kill her? Or why did Katelyn silently and dramatically slip beneath the waves when she got too tired swimming and she could've easily asked Beck for help? Anyway, there was no bad language or sex.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

A neighbors to lovers story with lots of action and suspense.

Katelyn Bradley opened up a private investigation business with her brother Ryan's fiancee Tori. She had previously been with the Mount Shasta Police Department but quit after a bad experience. So she has the training and the skills. That's what she relied on when she saw someone sneaking around Beck Goodwin's house. Sure enough once she entered the house she found a masked man hovering over Beck in Beck's library. Katelyn fought the man and managed to rip off his mask enabling her to see his face. But he got away. When the police arrived she agreed to stop at the station in the morning to look at mug shots. But later that night Beck got to return the "saving a life" favor when he caught the same man trying to smother Katelyn with her pillow. He fought off the guy but the guy got away again. This was just the beginning of the attempts on their lives. Katelyn and Beck needed to get some answers.

Beck Goodwin is a former world class rock climber who now works at a rock climbing facility. Beck and his son Ollie are still recovering from the death of Mia, Beck's wife, Ollie's mother in a hit and run automobile accident a year ago. Beck is convinced that the truck hitting Mia's car and pushing it through the guard rail on the bridge and into the water below was no accident. But the police didn't believe him. After the break-in at his house and Katelyn's house Beck hires Katelyn to help track down the assailant. They survive many dangers. The one danger he can't run and hide from though is his attraction to Katelyn. After Mia deceived him Beck doesn't think he is ready to love again.

Covert Cover-Up by Elizabeth Goddard is the second book in her Mount Shasta Secrets series. This is a fast-paced story. Action and danger practically leap off the pages. The two main characters Katelyn and Beck both have doubts about having a relationship after trust issues from past experiences. They both fight hard to ignore the fact they are falling in love. I really liked how both Katelyn and Beck were super protective of each other. They both are very brave, competent people. This book was a fast read with lots of suspense.

Katelyn is a former police officer – now a Private Investigator. Beck is her two-doors-down neighbor, a rock climbing pro and instructor, who is widowed and has a sweet son, Oliver. One night, Katelyn is alerted by their neighbor, Clara, that something amiss at Beck’s house. She enters Beck’s home and finds herself fighting a would-be thief. He gets away, and she thinks that is pretty much all there is to it. Or is it?
This book really hits the pedal from the first page. I was engrossed in Katelyn and Beck’s story, how amidst all the danger and mystery, they go from not being able to trust themselves, to learning to do just that, as well as put their trust in one another.
This is book #2 in the Mount Shasta Secrets series. If you haven’t read the first, Deadly Evidence (Katelyn’s brother, Ryan’s story), or this one, get thee to a bookstore and grab them both, quick!

While I enjoy the Love Inspired Suspense line, I sometimes feel like the books are too similar (obligatory car chases, anyone?). With its unique cloak-and-dagger story line and blessed absence of said car chase, Elizabeth Goddard’s Covert Cover-Up was a refreshing read.

Yes, Beck and Katelyn made some stupid decisions at times—like not including Katelyn’s brothers in their investigation—but the fact you don’t have a clue about who is targeting them for a good portion of the book makes it easy to keep reading. And then Goddard throws a few twists in there to pull you in even further.

The setting and Beck’s career as a rock climber and then a trainer are also unique to this story, making it one romantic suspense fans will enjoy.

Katelyn Brady, former police officer and now private investigator, stops the burglary and assault of her widowed neighbor, Beck Goodwin. During the attack, Katelyn sees the assailant's face and becomes the next target on his list! The question is what could have happened to make Beck the target of a killer?

I enjoyed this inspirational mystery/romance. I know what to expect from the Love Inspired suspense series and this book delivered! The writing was fast-paced and well-written. Katelyn and Beck are characters with secrets that have kept them emotionally unavailable, so it's fun to see their "walls" about love break down. I did feel that Beck was a little too overbearing or stubborn at first. Jack's son, Oliver and his parents were enjoyable characters.

When I want a fast-paced, inspirational suspense Elizabeth Goddard is a wonderful choice!

I'm looking forward to the next book in the Brady family saga!

Wow, wow, wow...a lot of action and suspense. This one will keep you guessing as to what will happen next. A good story. Katelyn Bradley rushes to help her neighbor when she suspects a burglar has broken into his house and arrives in time to save him and see the face of the man trying to harm Beck. Then that night Beck saves her from the same guy who tries to kill her! The next few days are alot of close calls on their lives. What is going on? Katelyn a private detective decides to get to the bottom of things. Will they be able to figure out what is going on and why someone is trying to kill Beck and now her? Will they be able to protect Beck's son in the process or will the evil guys try to harm him to get what he wants?

Get ready to be strapped in for a roller coaster ride! From the first chapter to the last, Beck and Katelyn are constantly on the run! They are neighbors but as soon as they figure out that Beck's deceased wife was murdered, not accidentally killed, they don't know who is after them. However, when they figure it out, it is a race to stay one step ahead of the assassins! Beck has a darling son, Ollie, who makes an appearance now and then and I would have liked to see more of him but really, Beck was doing all he could to keep him out of the way of these crazy men after them! It was a wonder how they stayed alive! My only "negative" comment is that Beck was a little too bossy in my opinion. Katelyn was a trained private investigator and ex-cop. She knew her stuff and yet Beck seemed to tell her what to do a lot or lead the investigation when HE was the one who hired her! It would have been a lot better if she were more forceful and if he would have listened to her more but I enjoyed the story and the action was non-stop so I had a very hard time put the book down! Can't wait for the next one!

Covert Cover-Up is an easy, fast-paced read with a decent suspense hovering in the shadows. I didn't care for some of the finer points in the relationship between Beck and Katelyn though. He was overbearing to the point of completely disregarding her sound advice as a former cop turned PI. In that regard, I thought Katelyn was weak and should have had the wits to dump him as a client. But, they have this electric connection so they stick together while they solve who killed Beck's wife. Figuring out the mystery surrounding her was what I enjoyed the most.

With non-stop action and danger at every turn, award-winning author Elizabeth Goddard’s latest Love Inspired Suspense novel, Covert Cover-Up, is sure to delight fans of romantic suspense. In Covert Cover-Up, former cop Katelyn Bradley finds herself a target after a burglary at her neighbor Beck Goodwin’s house puts her directly in the sights of a killer. Death-defying suspense, secrets from the past, and romance come together to make a truly enjoyable novel that readers will not want to put down.

I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Goddard’s trade length novels through Revell Publishing, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read more from this author. As I started reading Covert Cover-Up, I realized that this is the second book in her Mount Shasta series, but this book can easily be read as a standalone novel. I am very curious about Katelyn’s brother Ryan and Tori’s path to romance that was hinted at in this novel, so I am looking forward to going back and reading book one in the series, Deadly Evidence. The best thing is that Katelyn has three brothers, all in law enforcement, so there will be more books to look forward to in the Mount Shasta series.

Covert Cover-Up is recommended for readers who enjoy inspirational romantic suspense.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.

Covert Coverup
Mount Shasta Secrets #2
By Elizabeth Goddard

When her neighbor reports suspicious activity next door Kately Bradley checks it out for her. What she finds is neighbor Beck Goodwin being attacked in his own home. When Katelyn attempts to intervene she finds herself the newest target of an assassin.

Katelyn knows that Beck is hiding something and that he didn't tell the whole story to the police. The question is why. But all too soon both are busy keeping half a step ahead of someone who seems determined to keep them from ever disclosing what they know. There is just one problem Katelyn doesn't know anything and Beck doesn't want to talk about it. But with both their lives on the line Katelyn wants to know why.

Beck is sure that his late wife's death and his subsequent "investigating" has put him in someone's crosshairs, he just doesn't know whose and why they have decided to target him now. But he knows he doesn't want to put anyone else in danger and that is just what is happening.

Katelyn doesn't want to drag her family into the mess and ruin her brother's upcoming wedding. Can she help Beck discover the truth and still be her best friend's Maid of Honor in three days? Time and a determined killer are against them...

This is the second book in the Mount Shasta Secrets series and can easily be read as a standalone if you have not read the first book. As a Love Inspired Suspense series, you don't have to be concerned about graphic anything - this is a clean read. The story takes place over just a few days and involves several scenes of peril that understandably are suspenseful. But being a Love Inspired Suspense you can be assured of a satisfying conclusion. Overall I would highly recommend this book to those who like suspense and romance with no blushing involved.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Covert Cover-Up. This is book two in the Mount Shasta Secrets Series. Elizabeth's books are some of my favorite. I'm always excited when I get one in the mail. This one is no exception. I don't know how she keeps coming up with new and awesome ideas. This story is well written, action packet, and full of drama. Faith is a vital part of all her work and I really like that. I know you will love this one.

Private Investigator Katelyn Bradley is called in the middle of the night by her neighbor. Clara had seen someone sneaking around her neighbor's home. Beck is a single father with a son. She goes to the home and finds the door unlocked. Beck has been attacked and is lying on the floor. She is attacked before she can check on him. The police show up just in time but she had seen the man's face. If the man was just a thief why did he stay to attack them. Things didn't add up. At home she is sleeping when she is attacked by the same man as he tries to smother her.

Beck Goodwin was once a famous rock climber. He traveled all over the world until he married. They still traveled until his son was born. Then something happened in his marriage. His wife said she would tell him the truth but then she was killed. He is convinced this attack has something to do with his wife's mysterious death. He had just found something that could be the evidence he needed to explain her death and their attacks.

A terrifying journey to find information on his wife death and keep each other alive while killers climb out of the woodwork. God has a plan for these broken souls. A plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. In this time of crisis God is the only one with a plan that will work against the evil that surrounds us. Give Him your heart and watch Him work in your life.

Covert Cover-Up is book two in Elizabeth Goddard‘s Love Inspired Suspense miniseries Mount Shasta Secrets. Ex-cop-turned-private-investigator, Katelyn Bradley, only wants to check on her neighbor. It seems his house is being burglarized and the perpetrator could still be inside. But that one good deed might cost her life.

Beck Goodwin is a rock climber, widow, and father. Neighbor, too. He has mixed feelings when his pretty neighbor tries to save him from a burglar because Beck isn’t so sure the man was a burglar. His suspicions have been discounted before, so he keeps them to himself. Until Katelyn becomes a target, too.

Thus kicks off a story that doesn’t stop. Beck and Katelyn might be attracted to one another, but between dodging bullets and bad guys, it’s not their focus. I liked that. With the danger being so intense, taking a time out to be physically attracted to someone can feel forced. In this story, the connection between Beck and Katelyn develops under pressure, gradually, as if it sneaks up on them as soon as the smoke clears.

I love short novels because they are page-turning, intense reads and Covert Cover-Up is just that. Intense. I didn’t read the first book in the series, but other than wanting to read it now that I’ve met the two main characters in Deadly Evidence, it didn’t take away from reading this book, nor did this book spoil anything from the previous book.

If you’re looking for a book to capture your attention for several hours – and fair warning, you won’t want to put the book down until you’re finished – definitely pick up a copy of Covert Cover-Up.

This story left me wanting on all the three major aspects of a Love Inspired romantic suspense book.
With suspense, there were too many instances that the assassin/agent plotline felt unbelievable. And why did Private investigator Katelyn Bradley, a former police officer, let Beck Goodwin, a rock climber, take the lead again and again, when he obviously made several poor choices on a row when it came to surviving the mayhem they were in?!
Beck and Katelyn had a physical attraction, and when it came to romance that was all they seemed to be riding on. Beck and Katelyn both had control issues, trust issues, communication issues, PTSD, and I wasn't sure if they would even want to talk to each other after the first scene.
There have been other books with Love Inspired series that have had the faith element as an assumed fact of the characters' lives. With Covert Cover-Up it felt even less than that, even though stopping for a moment and together praying for guidance in the deadly mess they were in could have had a chance to improve all the three major aspects of the book.
So this story left me wanting, that happens sometimes since it is impossible to please all readers always. But while reading the book I didn't consider quitting before the end, more like wondered and waited for redemption that didn't arrive.

First off I have to say that I am a big fan of “Love Inspired” novels as well as Elizabeth Goddard novels. “Covert Cover-Up” is the second in a series but I have not read the one before it yet. The first one is about two characters that are also mentioned in this one, Tori Peterson and Ryan Bradley. The main characters in this one are Katelyn Bradley who is the sister to Ryan Bradley and Beck Goodwin. Like a lot of Christian fiction series, you do not have to have read the first book to enjoy this one. Though I am sure it would make this book a little more enjoyable if you had read the first, you will in no way be lost if you have not. I find this book like I have found other books by Elizabeth Goddard and that is thoroughly entertaining. She does such a good job of getting your attention from the very beginning of the book and is able to keep it the entire time. You may only have one problem with this book. That problem would be trying to put it down and not read it in one sitting. So as you can tell from my review, I would highly recommend this book.

Covert Cover-Up is a fast paced book that takes you on a journey about a husband trying to figure out why his wife was murdered. Katelyn Bradley's looking in on a neighbor only to discover someone is trying to kill him. Beck Goodwin finds a safe in his basement and all of a sudden men are after him. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) his neighbor comes to his rescue and is pulled into the web of the mystery behind his wife's murder. Can both Katelyn and Beck deny the spark that is between them or will they finally learn to trust again?

I loved this book because it kept you on your toes. Elizabeth Goddard really did a good job of drawing you in and pulling you into this mystery. What exactly happened to Beck's wife? Is he just paranoid or is his outlandish theories real life? Can Katelyn learn to put her past behind her and trust a man again? Will Beck get past his wife's death and find love again? What exactly is going on here in the shadow of Mount Shasta? Read it and find out!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
