Being a parent isn’t an easy ride. Even more so for single mum Shelley Lewis. When her thirteen year old son’s hormones kick in, she’s faced with his immense growth, insane sweat, and ridiculous hairiness, not to mention all the normal teenage issues. Discovering her only son isn’t human on top of those is the shock of a lifetime, and Shelley knows she’s the only one to blame. It may be too late to save her son from her mistakes, but she can still try to save Gabe from himself.

For fans of J.A. Belfield’s Holloway Pack series, Hereditary is a look back at the origins for characters met in Resonance.
Best known for her Holloway Pack Stories and The Therapist, J.A. Belfield lives in Solihull, England, with her family, a spoiled dog, and a cat who likes to vomit in unfortunate places.
Once upon a time, she was a little girl with a vivid imagination. Not much has changed in the last forty years.
J.A. Belfield writes paranormal romance, with a second love for urban fantasy. And now she writes saucy romance, too. Because she can. ;)
As an avid reader of werewolf fiction, I'm always curious to see how an author approaches transformations; personally I prefer the painful change as opposed to the *poof* version, and J.A. Belfield nailed it with this short. Knowing you're going to shift must be scary enough to begin with, but being totally in the dark about what's coming would be downright frightening, and having your equally clueless mother witness the whole ordeal adds a whole other level of crazy to an already loco situation. Then, have your BFF join the party, and the normal train has officially left the station. All of the characters' reactions felt legit, and the intensity of Gabe's predicament ensured that HEREDITARY was a heart pounding novella from beginning to end. If you're looking for a quick taste of this author's werewolves, look no further. ~ 4.5 stars
INITIAL THOUGHTS As usual when I hear there's going to be a new Holloway Pack novel or novella it went straight onto my "want to read wishlist" and of course I am looking forward to reading it.
MY REVIEW I downloaded this one FREE from Smashwords. The cover is very dark, and mysterious. I'd say the byline of "no calm before the storm" fits the main character in this novella, as what is happening to him arrives with very little warning and is a "storm" of emotions and changes. So would I be attracted enough to the cover to pick up book in a book store? Yes, I think I would want to check out the book because of the cover. I'd definitely be snatching a copy from the shelf once I realised it was a Holloway Pack novella. So this novella begins by a woman having second thoughts about a one night stand she had with a gorgeous guy, As he left her with a "gift" as she was pregnant. She gave birth to a gorgeous blonde hair bouncing baby boy. As the boy grew, he was heavily into sports and a very boisterous, active child yet he was also a respectful to wards his mother and grandfather. All that changes a he becomes a moody quiet teen. This novella tells us all about how Gabriel's first "change" occurred and how he, his mother and Mia help him cope with it. I dont want to go into more detail though I could rattle on about this novella so much as I do love J.A. Belfield's Holloway Pack Series. So did I enjoy the novella? Yes I did. Would I recommend the novella? Yes, I would, and I'd say if you haven't tried the Holloway Pack yet, why not start here whilst this one is FREE! Would I want to read more of this series? Yes, please. Would I read other titles by this author? Yes.
What a great little short story to tell of Gabe's beginning as a werewolf. It was a really smooth, fast read, & left me wanting to read the rest of the books in the Holloway Pack series. If you aren't familiar w/the series but like a good paranormal read I highly recommend buying it. If you have read the series, I still recommend buying it & see the beginning for Gabe.......It's free!! Doesn't get much better than that.....
4.5 stars This was nice, detailed short story about how Shelley realized what Gabe was. I liked the "peek" into the beginning of them as well as "seeing" Mia. Shelley deals with it very well in my opinion especially considering she knows nothing about the supernatural.

Hereditary is nice short addition to the Holloway Pack series and it tell the story from Shelby's perspective when her son Gabe starts his transformation into a werewolf.
I really enjoyed this short story and it was nice to learn a bit more about Shelby and Gabe and saw how they dealt with his changes. In the rest of this series, except the first book they don't deal a lot with the first change into a werewolf, so it was nice to see that addressed here. Also because at first Shelby doesn't know what's wrong with Gabe they really struggle with the issue and trying to figure out what's wrong.
I really felt for Shelby in this short story, there's something wrong with her only son and she doesn't know what and has no way to figure it out. I think she reacts realistically to the situation and does the best she can considering the circumstances. I also liked Mia and how she stood by Gabe's side even through his frightening changes.
Although it's a fun addition to the Holloway Pack series, this novella can also be read as a standalone. You don't know the relevance of these characters in connection with the rest of the main story, but I think it would give an interesting perspective when reading this novella before the other books.
To conclude: Hereditary is an enjoyable short story that gives some backstory for some characters we meet in the Holloway Pack series. I really liked the characters and seeing how they went through Gabe's change into a werewolf.
Not a whole lot happened in this read considering it was only 27 pages long but it did leave me wanting to jump into this series and learn more. I also appreciate it being offered as a freebie.
Hereditary is a little novella that gives you the backstory for Shelley and Gabe. It should be read between book 2 and 3 so I don't think it should be read as a stand-alone. I liked the insight we see here and how they handled the complete surprise of Gabe changing into a werewolf.
I gotta tell you a little something…. I will not be doing a normal review, because this isn’t your normal novel. This is a novel in Shelley’s, Gabe’s mom, point of view, except it’s the telling of how she had no idea what was happening to her sweet son, and how some crazy changes have made her life a little more complicated. So, with that, I will say just read it. It’s written so well, you’ll think you’re talking to her, and watching her tear up when she talks about Gabe’s pain. And it’ll give you an insight to how things were before his change verses after his change.
Plus, you also get to meet Mia for the first time, and you learn that Shelley has family I didn’t know she had. You also get to see how the change not only changes Gabe’s mentality, but his physical and mental appearances as well. I think it’s cute when he acts a little like a dog sometimes.:) Don’t tell any of those Holloway boys I said that! Seriously, just read it:) it’s worth it! 5 PAWS!
