Informative and concise. Would've liked to see something a little less Eurocentric, but the book does what it sets out to do. Phillips takes some liberties with categorizing/grouping certain movements. A good overview nonetheless.

Great pick if you are looking into having a first approach to modern art.
The book is organized in an intuitive, chronological way. However, I would appreciate the addition of more pictures for a clearer view of each of the movements presented.

Một cuốn từ điển về các chủ nghĩa nghệ thuật được chia thành 4 giai đoạn: khởi sinh, đầu TK20, giữa TK20, cuối TK20 và TK21. Mỗi phần đều được chia màu nên rất dễ tra lại. Về dàn trang cũng rất sáng tạo khi để mỗi phần chú giải theo biểu tượng, đừng bỏ qua bất cứ trang nào trong cuốn sách này nhé! Một điểm khen là cuối sách có niên biểu để tổng kết lại các chủ nghĩa nghệ thuật theo năm. Vì sách trình bày theo dang liệt kê khái niệm nên mỗi chủ nghĩa đại diện được 1-2 tác phẩm. Còn muốn xem các tác phẩm khác thì phải tìm theo tên nên hơi mất công. Sách mà in thêm mã qr xong quét cái là ra các tác phẩm theo chủ nghĩa nghệ thuật đấy thì quá tuyệt luôn. Nhưng đối với mình như này khá là đáng mua rồi

Quyển này hơi giống quyển "Lược sử triết học", cũng là dạng tóm tắt và tổng hợp nhưng viết không hay bằng "Lược sử triết học". Mỗi trường phái chỉ có vỏn vẹn 2 trang giới thiệu và tóm tắt cùng với ảnh của 1 đến 2 tác phẩm nổi bật cộng thêm là từ chuyên ngành dày đặc làm cuốn này khá là khô và khó đọc, sách có hơn 160 trang thôi mà đọc mãi mới xong haizz.

Clairement, ce livre ne se suffit pas à lui-même. Les descriptions de chaque courant sont trop brèves pour comprendre de quoi on parle alors faut s'armer de patience et chercher sur le net, les dizaines d'artistes cités et au bout du compte, j'en ressors avec une vingtaine de noms à approfondir un jour prochain.

This is a good introduction to the variations of modern art that are still strong today. I have felt certain art pieces to be “ridiculous” but this helped me to see the varied emphasis of the different styles. I sub-textually saw the evolution and variation of human thinking and perspective.

A good summary about most of the representative modern art for people like me who have absolutely zero understanding beforehand. That said, I really appreciate the way this book explains, with stories and famous artists. It's not a fit if you know modern art quite well, but for me it's a useful handbook.

Dit boek is goed in Nederlandse vertaling verkrijgbaar; in de ramsj bovendien, dus voor ht geld hoef je 'm niet te laten liggen. Phillips' boek is fijn beknopt, maar biedt wel veel informatie over de meeste belangrijke kunststromingen vanaf de 19e eeuw tot nu. Typisch zo'n boek dat fijn is om er bij te hebben, om af en toe wat in op te zoeken, maar dat ook op zichzelf gewoon overtuigt.

Velmi kvalitně zpracovaný "výcuc" dějinami moderního a postmoderního umění. Jsou zde uvedeni zásadní autoři, ideje, klíčové pojmy. Časové osy jednotlivých směrů na konci knihy jsou užitečnou pomůckou.
Knihu hodnotím velmi kladně, na málo stránkách hodně parády :)
