This remains my favorite currently published series due to the wonderful array of characters throughout. After Ashihara took a year long hiatus (including surgery) in 2018, the series has returned, though this time in a monthly format with slightly longer chapters. With Volume 20, we finish this penultimate rank war, with Tamakoma's ability to go on an away mission hinging on the results.

Story: The battle in the nighttime at the mall continues! Kageura squad has been cornered - a rare occurrence for Kageura since he has only ever had to bail out once in all the previous rank wars. But so much still rides on Chika's ability to actually shoot someone. Hyuse and Kuga are tag team specialists, crazily utilizing escudo in ways never before seen. But can the unknown variables Hyuse brings be enough to win them the extra 3 points needed in order to be able to go on the away mission? If they make the 3 points spread above Kageura here they will still have to play in the last battle as well - one with even harder opponents - and still win!

The battle was, of course, awesome as always. It's never a case of pew pew and then someone wins. There is always a lot of discussion about strategy among all the teams. Thus far, Tamakoma seems to have been winning due to surprising their opponents rather than being better skilled. So it will be interesting to see how they can surprise in the final rank war battle in future volumes. Chika's inability to shoot a person is still a variable, though.

Along with the rank war, there are great scenes outside of the battle. In one, Kikuchihara hears of a rumor that could spell big trouble for Tamakoma. Another scene has the Tamakoma crew chancing upon Ninomiya squad at a BBQ restaurant. There is a very interesting discussion about Hatohara and why she fled Earth to the Neighbors. And at the end of the volume are character profiles on Kronin, Yuri, Yisuka, Arashiyama, Hyuse, and Mirai Hatohara.

Ashihara noted in this volume that the rank wars were originally planned to finish by this volume 20. Those reading the series as it is published in Japan will be happy to know that the last rank war begins nearly immediately in the next volume and we will finally learn who will be going on the away mission. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

It's Tamakoma-2 vs. Suzunari-1 vs. Azuma Squad vs. Kageura Squad (#2 B-Rank)

Tamakoma-2 has Hyuse (their new wild card) on their team but they need lots of points in order to catch up and pass Kageura Squad. Meanwhile, Suzunari-1 has been messing with the lights, blinding the other teams and Azuma is letting his squad learn from the experience.

But Mikumo's got an uneasy feeling that just won't go away and it turns out, his gut was right.

Tamakoma-2 wins the round but are still stuck in third behind the Kageura squad. Chika is confronted on whether she will or not she will shoot people.

Our whole family loves this series, and this volume has a good fight with unexpected moves. But now we have to wait until October for the next volume... :(
