Jesse After spending the first part of my life trapped in a small town where it wasn’t okay to be a makeup-wearing boy who liked boys, I swore I’d leave and never be anything but loud, proud, and unapologetically me. I’ve kept that promise. I’m following my dreams, have an apartment with my bestie, and get to dance my nights away at one of the hottest gay bars in Portland.
The only downfall is Dane, the sexy bartender with a perma-scowl always aimed my way. The tension between us is so strong that even the clubgoers notice, and they eat that stuff up. Our boss makes us dance on the bar together every Friday night. I might shake my booty a little more with Dane just because I love getting under his skin. It’s not my fault he doesn’t know how to have any fun…but I kind of want to teach him.
Dane I got burned bad by my last boyfriend. Thankfully, my sister, Bree, and my niece, Hailey, make my days a whole lot brighter. I’m getting back on my feet, including a decent job as a bartender. But working in a gay club makes it harder to keep to myself. No way do I want to get reeled in by another charming, pretty face and get hurt again, and definitely not by someone like Jesse, whose audacity frustrates me to no end.
So why do I want to shove him against the wall and screw that boldness right out of him?
Only…sometimes he’s pretty sweet, especially with Hailey. As we go from enemies to angry hookups to friends, our feelings are changing and moving into uncharted territory. This can’t go anywhere. Jesse and I are like oil and water; we just don’t mix…right?
Riley Hart is the girl who wears her heart on her sleeve. She's a hopeless romantic. A lover of sexy stories, passionate men, and writing about all the trouble they can get into together. If she's not writing, you'll probably find her reading.
Riley lives in California with her awesome family, who she is thankful for everyday.
I really enjoyed this story, more than I expected. For the most part, I didn't want to put it down. And that's always a good sign.
Dane and Jesse are very different characters, but I loved them both equally. Dane is the quiet and grumpy one, and Jesse is such a ray of sunshine. He is confident, outgoing, flirty and amazingly lovable. What they do have in common is how sweet and caring they are.
The story mostly focuses on their relationship, which I really enjoyed. Dane and Jesse had this great chemistry from the start, their banter was fantastic, but I also loved how gradually their feelings towards each other changed.
The secondary characters were great, too. I'm looking forward to Seth's story! He is so adorable.
I have to mention how much I love it when a book cover matches the story or the character(s) and this one is amazing! It captured Jesse perfectly.
I love femme boys, particularly when juxtaposed with the rough, masculine, and unattainable, which is how Jesse feels about Dane. The two are opposites in just about every way, but their chemistry is off the charts. Is it a classic case of opposites attract or something more?
This books is not a dramafest. It's a fairly low-key, relationship-focused story with some scorching sexy action (public and private!) and a mild enemies-to-lovers trope.
I loved the MCs and their banter. Dane assumes all the wrong things about Jesse, and Jesse realizes there's more to Dane than meets the eye.
The secondary characters, including Dane's sister and Jesse's friend and roommate Seth, were fantastic. I'm desperate for Seth to get his HEA because he is just too cute.
And speaking of HEAs, Pretty Perfect ends with a tentative one, which felt appropriate to the story. I have all the hope that these two will keep going strong.
When i saw the cover and the title, i thought this was going to be about makeup artists, the likes of Jeffree Star, Bretman, etc, i am a bit disappointed that was not the case here. Our MC Jesse likes to wear makeup but that's it. I felt a bit letdown. Anyhoo, that's just me.
The kid got on my nerves, you are writing about a 4 year old kid, please make her at least realistic.
It was a good mm romance story, nothing special, it started with a bang, then along the way i got a little bored. I loved Jesse, Dane was ok too, he grew on me as the story progressed.
Overall, it was ok. Recommended, for when you are in the mood for a light story.
Loved it! These guys were so cute together. The banter had me cracking up. 😂😂😂 Of course, Jessie was beyond fabulous. I loved his confidence. It was also refreshing reading about working class people trying to make ends meet.
Pretty Perfect by Riley Hart and Christina Lee was well- pretty perfect. It's the story of two co-workers whose characteristics mix as well as oil and water. Dane is grumpy and standoffish, while Jesse is lively and social. Both men have had their share of heartbreak and hardships but have dealt with them differently- and both men were more than met the eye.
It turns out that a chance meeting at a playground and a special little girl was all the buffer they needed to begin to soften their views of one another.
If you enjoy:
-Enemies to lovers -Opposites attract -Banter -Romance -Dual POVs -Hot chemistry -Hurt/Comfort -Family storylines -Low angst, feel good
Isn’t it wonderful when you just know you’re going to read one of your next favorite books? You just feel it, and with every turned page, you’re more certain that this is the one.
Pretty Perfect is a book with a lot of tropes that I always love, such as: enemies to lovers, opposites attract, fem!boy MC, the grumpy falls for the sunshine, and I could go on and on. But let me tell you one thing: I completely fall in love with Jesse and Dane’s romance.
I had previously read Of Sunlight and Stardust so I knew how powerful the combo of Riley Hart and Christina Lee can get. They write such marvelous characters that I can never get enough of their stories! Both Jesse and Dane feel so real, and they’re so perfect for each other that I did get sappy over them.
I wish I had a friend like Jesse because he’s into make-up and I might learn a thing or two about his self-confidence. He’s this young man that used to live in one of those country places that just fall too short for big personalities like him. But then he moves to the city to go to college, and he meets Dane in his part job in a club for gay men. They work and dance together, though at first they can’t stand each other’s guts. They’re just too different and they don’t think highly of the other.
Eventually, that banter and sexual frustration build up perfectly into a sweet, sexy and real relationship. Truth be told, I saw myself in Dane and I couldn’t help but to laugh at a times ‘cause they flirted a lot but denying attraction is always more fun than just accepting it, right?
The sex scenes are smoking hot and their chemistry really helps them grow into their amazing relationship because they bring the best in each other. What can I say? I love them with all my heart. And just like the cherry on top of the cake, we had adorable side characters such as the little niece, Dane’s sister and Seth, Jesse’s bff.
Like I mentioned, I had a hunch this would be one of my favorite books of the year and boy, I’m glad I was right! I made myself enjoy the book as much as I could because if I had the time, I would have finish this in one sitting.
I would totally recommend you to give this a try! It’s not easy for me to rate something 5/5 so when I said this was perfect in every sense, I really mean it.
First, I need to mention the beautiful man on the cover. The cover is what initially caught my eye.
This really worked for me today. Considering how many books I’ve enjoyed that were written by Riley Hart, you’d think I’d stop being surprised when I really enjoy their books. This just hit all of my happy buttons.
I can’t write a decent review on a good day, so it goes without saying this review sucks🤷🏽♀️
***** Fantastic story ! ***** Intriguing journey of beautiful, Jesse, 23, all sass and flash, melding his happiness with staunch Dane, serious and scalded by life, and their path is fabulous. It's a "s l o w b u r n" of mayhem, arguments, misunderstandings and misconceptions, but we are lead to clarity. It's fun to picture their club performances and the Halloween costumes naughty dancing. * Hottie Dane...
Misunderstandings marred their initial impressions of each other, when in reality, they had so much in common. Each was struggling, but hiding their hardships.
* Jesse hides in humor and snark...
... while Dane acts grumpy. Dane's sister, Bree and 4 yr. old daughter, Hailey are terrific folks.
Especially the sweet little girl.
We also get Bree and her husband's issues and Jesse's parents beliefs. It takes a long time of banter and hesitation, hot sexiness and cuddles, before our guys finally admit their feelings.
It's a fun, interesting tale, with lots to look forward to with the HFN. ENJOY !
This could have been good.. the story had potential, but it needed a smoother execution, intelligent dialogues, real chemistry, and much more effort.
You can’t just put two MCs with different appearances in a book, one grumpy (Dane) with ex-baggage, prejudices and a cute 4 year old niece, one sunshiny (Jesse) with family drama and a love for makeup, call it hate to lovers, and hope for the best.
Dnf at 70% because going on has no appeal anymore.
One disturbing thing: Nobody who is responsible for a 4 year old girl would trust a co-worker they do not know aside from their job at the nightclub "Playground" (or even if it was some other job, makes no difference) and one hookup after work, to look after the child for hours. Alone. Dane telling his sister that he trusts Jesse to look after his niece may sound lovely in theory but was extremely disturbing to read. Dane even pondered if his niece was safe as he left them (he convinced himself that Jesse would take care of her), but he had no choice, he had to go to work because he needed the money?! Wow, talk about priorities. (*hides screaming because the world is a bad bad place*)
The writing: it wasn’t smooth, but abrupt and definitely strange at times, like: "I was out the door and on my way to the Playground. I had to take the bus. Seth always offered me his car, but I never took it - one of those quirky things about myself." ....what?
This was my second try with a Riley Hart - Christina Lee - collaboration, after I hadn't liked Of sunlight and stardust (2 stars). Note to future me: do not bother anymore.
Reread/Relisten January 2023: 4 stars bumping up the rating
I think this time around I enjoyed the story more, so I am excited to move on to Seth’s story now!
3 solid stars:January 2021
This book was a quick read and was light and fluffy. There was low angst which I love, and how Dane and Jesse progressed from enemies to lovers was adorable.
I recommend this if you want something that feels like a nice cup of cocoa, warm and sweet.
I don't know if I will read Seth's book, didn't fully connect with him since he was there on and off throughout the book being Jesse's best friend, but never say never I guess.. haha
Also I would say that the theme song for this book would be "Fire on Fire" by Sam Smith, I think that this works for Dane and Jesse.
This was a pretty awesome book, I absolutely loved and could NOT put it down.
Jesse is a 23 year old student from a small farming town with conservative, super religious parents, and of course they have no been able to accept who Jesse is. A queer kid who loves to put on make-up. He's been on his own since he was 18, moving to the city to get away from that life where he couldn't be who he is.
Dane has been burned in love before. He fell for his old boyfriend fast and easy and fell for his lies and tricks, and ended up with his things stolen, money taken from his accounts, and no boyfriend. Nothing. So he had to pick himself back up little by little.
Jesse is not Dane's ex, but he reminds him a little bit of him, and he lets that color his feelings for Jesse, lets it take over his judgement of Jesse, and he gets the wrong idea about him. Jesse totally likes Dane, but Dane's seeming aversion to him as evolved into some banter on Jesse's side as well and annoyance at Dane being "Captain Cranky Pants" all the time.
They work at a bar together, and at first their relationship is fairly adversarial (although not enemies level, imo) but they're also wildly attracted to each other.
Eventually Dane gives in once, but then is determined not to give in again. Dane for the most part in this is fearful of giving his trust into anyone again, and he feels it's too easy to fall under Jesse's "spell."
Jesse maintains that he and Dane aren't anything more than casual for a long while, as Jesse has never had a boyfriend and feels just sex is better than feelings.
But they're both proven wrong as time goes on and they fall more in love with each other and can't get enough of each other.
I loved these two together. I loved their chemistry, I loved their romance, I loved the back and forth and then the sweetness and the love. I loved the secondary characters who helped enrich the story, like Hailey, Dane's 4 year old niece who was adorable.
I was happy there wasn't any unnecessary melodrama and that these two didn't implode at the first sign of crisis and they actually worked it out.
I loved this, and I'm excited for Seth's - Jesse's roommate - book. I think we briefly got to meet Seth's LI for the next one, so I'm excited for that.
This book was just too good, I could hardly put it down. Definitely recommend!
Okay I’m gonna DNF this one real quick @62% because really, nothing is happening aside both MCs denying anything is going on between them emotionally when they BOTH know it.
And the denial is not in the cute way that make you go “awww you silly people” or in the intense UST way that makes you go “Ughhhhh. UST! Give me more” . Dane’s back & forth is just annoying to me right now. I don’t know if it’s my mood or whatever, but this isn’t doing it for me.
Right now I’m loving Jesse. Dane needs to get over himself. I guess I simply cannot read anymore of Jesse doing the heavy lifting for this whole novel; which is a bummer because I usually luuurrrvee Riley Hart’s books. :(
I’ve tried my absolute best to push through it but I have too many books that need my attention to struggle through this one.
Who knows? Might re-visit this but for now, it’s a nope from me *shrugs*
I don’t know why but I found this book kind of boring and a little bit ‘MM-by-numbers’.
I usually love Riley Hart’s work but this one underwhelmed me and I found myself wanting the story to hurry up and get to the end.
Not much depth or interesting characters I’m afraid!
Also don’t get me started on the awful child speak from a 4 year old in this one! Uncle Dane turning into Unca Dame, and Jesse turning into Desse, made me shudder/eye roll every time! This does not make the kid sound cute it just makes the authors sound like they have never met a 4 year old!
Dane and Jesse work together and due to a past relationship gone horribly wrong and because Jesse reminds Dane of this horrible ex, Dane unfairly despises Jesse.
Ain’t that some shit?!
But Jesse chooses to take the high road, well in the form of cheeky flirtation and always choosing to push every one of Dane’s buttons. But it must work because he eventually does wheedle his way into Dane’s good graces.
I mean what else is good head meant for?
But really, I think it was Jesse’s burgeoning friendship with Dane’s niece that really brought these guys together. And let me tell you, that was hands down the best part of this book. Jesse and that little girl are stinking adorable.
This was cute and had some sexy moments. I liked it but didn’t love it. Something was missing for me that would have pushed it from good to great. Also, I really didn’t like the kid. Taking two stars off for her alone. Not really but she was pretty terrible.
I am so excited about this series. I'm a total sucker for twinky guys who love to wear makeup. I mean...can I just say how stunningly gorgeous this cover is? OMG! It's PERFECT. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover but this book is just as fantastic on the inside as it is on the outside.
I loved the sexual tension between Jesse and Dane. The flirting, the teasing and their sexy dance moves combined to make these boys sizzle right off the page. But even better than that, they had this vulnerability about them. Neither of them was looking for a relationship but that's exactly what they found. I loved seeing them grow more comfortable with each other and when those feelings finally surfaced, I cheered.
These guys were truly adorable. Those moments with Dane's niece Hailey were the best. They melted my heart.
Speaking of melted hearts, I'm claiming Jesse's friend Seth right now. That boy has quite a story to tell and I can't wait. I'm already in love with him so I'm claiming him as mine!
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, hate-to-love, grumpy/sunshine romance. Jesse, a twink, and Dane, a stick-in-the-mud, make for such a fun “opposites attract” trope. Plenty of sexual tension, lovable side characters, and steamy scenes make it a really fun read!
It made me laugh a lot. Jesse is a very dazzling personality. He doesn't let the negatives drag him down and yet he is attracted to the ever grumpy Dane. Two complete opposites at first sight. Yet two men with big hearts. The play between the two was very funny and enjoyable. I constantly felt the need to smooth out Dane's frown and cuddle with Jesse. A very enjoyable story without much drama. A bit slow moving, so it was a shame that the end came rather quickly after all and somehow I was missing pages in the book ... would have liked to get a little more. Overall a light read, very good to unwind and enjoy. The world needs more characters like Jesse!
