This is very good. There's a ton of great stuff happening here that will impress fans of Brooke and of science fiction. Our two leads are distinctly different, and are excellent on their own. There's some fun and intricate world building, and some great action sequences.
Beaux is a captain aboard a commissioned space ship that finds a seemingly pristine planet. When they land, though, Beaux and her crew find out this is not the case. Moon is a survivor of a massive star cruiser crash and is an ex slave. She is rightfully concerned about the sanctity of her Haven and of her own safety as a runaway. Once Beaux and Moon realize they have to work together to stop a corrupt mining company from harming the planet, they find out far more about each other, and the planet than they expected.
So, there's hints throughout the book that the planet, dubbed "Haven" by Moon, is sentient. And the way the author explores that is great fun. It gives some room for an interesting twist that I did not really see coming. I also loved that Moon's pet doggo thing, Dancer, is such a big part of the story. I think he helps Moon and Beaux come closer together just by being himself.
If anything, I'd say I was a little distracted by some of the dialog. It strays a little too much into exposition dump, which did slow down some action sequences. It also made for some clunky conversations, to the point where I was like, "Did she really need to say it in that way?" Luckily those problems are regulated towards the end of the book, where the most important action has already ended.
For those who like a solid Lesbian Sci-fi read, this is great. It doesn't rely on the romance between Moon and Beaux, as they're constantly moving, but they do get some quieter moments to work on their relationship. I appreciate that, especially since they are up against some really tight timetables, and both were often injured, too. There's also the fact that Moon really didn't understand the feelings she was having on account of her being isolated all her life. It wouldn't have made sense for them to fall into bed together until much later on in the book. If they did, it would have made their romance feel very off-putting. It was a balance that played out very well.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
