The actual details of sex work: how to get a job, how to keep yourself safe, how much you can expect to make, how to plan your exit strategy, and much more...as well as juicy anecdotes about what life is like between the sheets. An essential manual for anybody who's ever considered a career as a phone sex operator, escort, call girl, exotic dancer, adult film performer or any other kind of sex worker.
This book is reasonably well written and informative. It has a lot of outdated information as it was published in 2001. There are a lot of web-site links and most of them do not exist anymore.
The merits of the book are that it is a step back in Sex work time and history. There are still some relevant ideas and a fun look back if this was a time in history that you are familiar with or perhaps it is before your time. Either way, it's neat to read about 'the way it was'.
The author does a good job of staying objective in her writing while still educating and painting a picture of the life and times of sex workers in each respective space. Stripping, peep shows, early days of camming, porn and escorting. She also discusses working on the street and the opportunity to cater to truckers via truck lots and over CB radio. Personally, I found that fascinating and haven't seen any talk about lot lizards in many other books.
She also talks about burnout and self care which is absolutely essential not only in sex work but in life in general.
Overall, it's well written, engaging, reasonably well-edited, has good historical value. It would be cool to see a 20yrs later version with all the appropriate updates.
If you are looking for something similar that is considerably more update, look of Lola Davina's guides to surviving and thriving in Sex Work.
