In order to protect her newfound family, she must work with three vampires that rebelled against their kind. One of my favorite recent reads. I'm a big fan of the paranormal genre, including vampires. This felt like the genre with some new takes and twists that were really intriguing to read. It is complex and makes you pay attention from beginning to end, and it will surprise you. It is not your typical vampire and witch book. It's dark without being dreary and has romance without overtaking the plot.

I could not stop this one once I started. It's a mature witch and vampire story with complex twists that wowed be with each punch. You need to really pay attention to catch all the fine details and it is totally worth it. Be warned that it does have some bloody scenes! It's a little dark at times yet still a super fun ride. This is a series I could see going on forever and I hope it does!

Convoluted

Occasionally, I'll read a book that just starts out utterly weird and confusing and I just don't even want to continue. This was one of those books. Not my cup of tea.

Having read some of this author's other work, I wasn't sure what to expect knowing this had vampires in it. I've read Martin's take on magic and was expecting some of the same, but this is different for the author and for what I've read of witches. The magic feels real and raw with the way it uses stones and vessels and it's not just some power in you for most characters and WHY it is for the main character is a wild story that felt so new and dark. The vampires had nods to classic tales and twists and new takes that kept a time old creature feeling fresh. This book is a little edgy and dark compared to the other reads. It has some beautiful moments of description and some really juicy lines. If you don't want to meet Xavier in real life at the end of this, we didn't read the same book. Fair warning that there are some bloody scenes that get rather detailed so it fits the bill of being a darker paranormal story. It has mystery and romance and a streak of a horror vibe at times. I'm not sure what genre it should go in but it goes on the highly recommend list for sure.

This is so much more than your average vampire story. It really centers around Darcy who is kind of a witch but something even the witches don't fully understand and how that happened is explained by some really twisted backstory that makes you curious just how much more there is to that tale. The premise that witches made vampires to battle against elves is interesting but not nearly as interesting as the characters themselves that you meet. Darcy is likable as an incredibly smart doctor that does some dumb stuff that she is super self aware of. The vampires are all fun, the good ones and the villains. This story is a high speed bloody adventure with characters you'll dream about.

Because I do not read many vampire or witch books, I was surprised that I could not put this book down. The suspense is intense. Darcy takes the reader through many discoveries--her past, different realms and magical spells. With each, the writer reveals an intriguing web of Darcy's world, rituals and the interworkings among the characters. I enjoyed how things unfolded, not suspecting what would happen next. Following this series will be fun.

I loved this story and the world Martin has created! She has taken traditional fantasy (vampires, witches, etc.) and given it a fresh, new, and exciting spin. Everything about this novel felt original and gripping. I’m proud to be one of the first to read it and can’t wait to see where the story goes next! Eagerly awaiting book 2!

My favorite yet by this author. It is gritty and darker and a fantastic story. These are some of the best characters in any witch and vampire story I've read, and it sets itself up for a great sequel.
