Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa was a poet and writer.

It is sometimes said that the four greatest Portuguese poets of modern times are Fernando Pessoa. The statement is possible since Pessoa, whose name means ‘person’ in Portuguese, had three alter egos who wrote in styles completely different from his own. In fact Pessoa wrote under dozens of names, but Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis and Álvaro de Campos were – their creator claimed – full-fledged individuals who wrote things that he himself would never or could never write. He dubbed them ‘heteronyms’ rather than pseudonyms, since they were not false names but “other names”, belonging to distinct literary personalities. Not only were their styles different; they thought differently, they had different religious and political views, different aesthetic sensibilities, different social temperaments. And each produced a large body of poetry. Álvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis also signed dozens of pages of prose.

The critic Harold Bloom referred to him in the book The Western Canon as the most representative poet of the twentieth century, along with Pablo Neruda.

Although I loved other narrative from Pessoa, this book was far from being a good one. These are not stories...it seems was wrote as an excuse to present some ideas. So no, I did not enjoy it.

Salvo los cuentos de 'El banquero anarquista' y 'Una cena muy original', que están completos, los demás son fragmentos, ideas y esbozos.
Como dice el traductor, Miguel Ángel Viqueira, 'No hay historia: hay deducción lógico-silogística'. Hay que estar muy atento y releer para seguir el hilo de sus pensamientos.

Quizás sea por el libro en general o por la edición en particular pero me pareció insuficiente. Más que cuentos son escenarios que el autor utiliza para dar rienda suelta a sus teorías sobre el raciocinio. La mitad de estos “cuentos” están inconclusos, por lo que el editor te saca de la narración constantemente para introducir notas aclaratorias sin las cuales el relato es inteligible.

No me sorprenden las teorías de Pessoa, que demuestran lo sumamente inteligente que era este autor, sin embargo el libro en su totalidad no era lo que me esperaba encontrar. Por una parte es un libro que no te deja indiferente, complejo y que mantiene una enérgica actividad intelectual pero tampoco se me ocurre a quién podría recomendárselo –no siendo los fanáticos de la obra del autor, claro está–.

Por último he de señalar que hay comentarios de tintes misóginos y racistas. Por supuesto hay que situar la obra en su contexto histórico y no analizarla desde el prisma de la actualidad pero yo no pude evitar llevarme las manos a la cabeza con según qué tipo de comentarios que me parecen, cuánto menos, reseñables.

Presents very interesting ideas about timeless world topics. Really enjoyed it, and even though I do not agree nor share some of the exposed ideas, made me question certain world topics.
