The Odds is a collection of poems about how we are all juggling with fate, or luck and chance, both good and bad — and sometimes grab the wrong end of the lighted torch. Winner of the 2018/19 International Book & Pamphlet Competition Judged by Neil Astley, Michael Schmidt and Amy Wack
This is a delightful collection of poems which combine contemporary life with a variety of old forms, a slanted view on the familiar and references back through mythology and literature. Robert Smith is Apollo, while still very much himself; children at funfairs are astronauts; ghost flowers haunt London streets and mushrooms embody their vows of silence. All of the poems are intelligent and experimental, playful and accessible. A worthy winner of the Poetry Business Competition.
