One Starry Knight

Rate this book
Sage Cassidy is falling for a boy from out of this world.

Her mom is an alcoholic with a taste for abusive boyfriends, her only friend at school quit talking to her, and the popular girls call her a freak. But none of that matters to seventeen-year-old Sage. Not since seven years ago when a mysterious boy named Adam pulled her from the dark depths of Lake Superior and gave her something to live for.

A best friend. A confidante. A first kiss.

When Adam appears in the lake one spring night in an explosion of light, Sage learns he is more than just the boy who visits every summer and leaves her to dream about him all winter. Adam is part alien, and he is caught in a cosmic custody battle between a human mother and a powerful otherworldly father. Eighteen years ago, Adam was given permission to spend his summers with his mother. But the agreement ends this summer, and unless Sage can find a way to keep him with her on earth, Adam will be leaving earth and Sage…forever.

I may pick it back up again...
When I saw this book offered on Audiobook Boom I didn't hesitate to request it- it sounded like something I'd really enjoy. Even though I'm way past the typical YA demographic, it's still one of my favorite genres.

Unfortunately, I should have taken more heed of the first part of the second sentence in the blurb. While I was enjoying the storyline with Sage and her best friend Adam, and learning about his background, I have such a hard time with parents like Sage's mom. I really cannot stand when a parent is so selfish that they only care about their happiness and have no concern for the child they brought into the world. She played a big enough part in this book that it made it hard for me to get past. And ultimately the reason I'm putting this aside for now. That may not make sense to others, but when I found myself listening and then getting so frustrated that I'd stop, then starting it up again just for her mom to irritate me once more, it just wasn't enjoyable.
I will probably pick this up again at a later date to finish, as I am intrigued by Sage and Adam's story and would like to know what's to come, but at this point I don't want it lingering around open-ended, so it's a dnf for now.

The narration is good. I think Joyce Oben was sounded convincingly like a teen girl- that can be hard sometimes I've found. She did give an interesting cadence to Adam and Luke's voices, I'm not quite sure if that was intentional, or if it's just how she sounds voicing young males, but it was different. Not off-putting or anything, just *different*. But all-in-all I think she was a good choice as narrator for the story.

Thank you to Joyce Oben for providing me with a free audiobook in return for an honest review.

Sage and Adam have been best friends for years. He is her only friend and feelings are growing between them, but after a strange experience, Sage begins to learn more and more about Adam that she could ever dream of.

I wasn’t sure about this book when I first read the write up. Sci-fi…especially alien sci-fi..I’ve never been a fan of. However, the promise of adorable romance lured me into it. Wow…I really wasn’t disappointed.

Amazed

Although the story is very heavily sci-fi as suggested by the blurb, it remains in the human world and focuses on the relationship between Sage and Adam. Both very well written and developing characters. This is all in Sage’s point of view, and I really did feel drawn to both characters as we went further and further into the book.
Sage has had a tough few years with the death of her father, loss of best friends and a constant flow of abusive boyfriends coming in and out of her mum’s life. Although I felt sorry for Sage, I didn’t feel that she allowed herself to be a complete victim which can be very easy for heroines to become in such books.
Adam was the same, we met him from Sage’s point of view as the best friend she looks forward to seeing when he comes to stay with his mum every Summer. I went from feeling indifferent to Adam, to getting very annoyed with him, to thinking he was actually quite sweet, to being very annoyed with him again, to eventually adoring him.

I think the pace of the story is written well. Everything that happens in this book seems to have a purpose, yet there’s not so much going on that it gets too confusing or hard to understand.

I love narrator Joyce Oben’s voice. She’s got a beautiful tone and keeps the story at a great pace. She has a great way of differentiating voices for characters and giving them life. The emotion that she carries is great, especially during tense or sad sections of the book. I honestly don’t think that anyone could have done a better job of giving Sage a voice.

Saying how unsure I was about this story, I was really hooked and I want to know more. I want to know what steps Sage is going to take next. I’m hoping to find out more about Zayne and his motives, I also really hope to hear more from Adam, although I’m not sure how. I’m definite]y planning on reading the next book in the series to find out what’s coming next!

I want more

This is a great book for young adults and romance fans alike. Even better if you’re a sci-fi fan…but if not, please don’t let it put you off, it’s easy to follow and very toned down.

Listened to the story on Audible. Narrator did a good job; her girl voice is good and had a nice tone, but she makes the boys seem a bit dopey. Overall, she did a nice clear performance.

Loved the alien aspect; some really interesting and unique ideas. Sage and Adam have been best friends for a long time; they both feel deeper feelings for the other, but it turns out things are going to be majorly complicated when aliens start getting involved. I really enjoyed the overall story idea, so I rounded up my 3.5 rating to a 4, but this was a bit too YA for my liking; too much YA cheesiness going on. A lot of the problems arise because of lack of communication and immaturity; too many stupid, petty jealousies, so it got annoying at times.

The story moves a bit too slowly as well; lots of added side stuff that didn’t add to the story. There was too much stuff with her pathetic mother, and some scenarios seemed repetitive. Sage is too sappy and overly dramatic too, so that also gets annoying. She’s a teenager though, so I let her get away with some of it. A lot of the characters weren’t exactly people you want to hang out with, so comparatively, Sage wasn’t too bad. Adam is such a sweet guy, and I liked Sage and his connection. She was a little too sappy and mopey at times, but I think Adam is good for her.

The ending isn’t exactly a cliffhanger, but you’ll definitely need to read the rest of the series for a more complete ending. I’m excited for it! I hope the characters mature and the petty jealousies stop as the series continues. Overall, an entertaining read that kept me interested.

Sad ... so very sad 😞😞😞

This book was so good and fast paced. I couldn’t put it down and was reading super fast to see what happened next.

Adam and sage ❤️

I loved Adam and Poor sage . She was so strong . Her mom needed major help too. But ugh I feel like I just had my heartbroken after reading that ending .

I cried a bit not gonna lie . Although I hate books that make me sad at the end I still had to give it 5 stars because it was amazing amazing read.

One I’ll never forget 😭😭😭😭

This was just okay for me. I received a free audio copy (my request from AudiobookBoom) in exchange for an honest review. And honestly? I started this, and stopped, because it just wasn't clicking for me. We start out introduced to the abusive home situation, then hear a little bit about Adam, but he's apparently not around. There is a mention of how they first me (he saved her from drowning) and then some stuff happens and they are both in the water and ... I was confused, was this a memory of that first save, or is this different? Just the way things were mentioned, dislike of a gal Briana, how Lucas is a former friend ... it's just stuff that seemed thrown out without being laid out easily, hard to follow, especially in audio.

So I stopped. I was able to download the kindle copy (available in Kindle Unlimited) and reread the first few chapters, made sure I was following everything, just refreshed ... before picking the audio back up. Now I'll admit, I can get a bit distracted, listening while I multi-task ... but that's the same for every book I listen to, so when I'm struggling to follow, I don't necessarily think it's me.

While I ended up liking the story well enough, it just seemed rather slow moving. Not a ton of important action until closer to the end. I didn't get involved enough in the characters to really care about them that much. And then ... it just ended. Didn't love that. Not really planning on continuing, but might, if it was free ;)

The narrator was good, but her voicing of the boys (Adam, Lucas, Kaden) all sounded exactly the same. And there was a distinctly different tone, almost a bit of an accent ... which would work for one of them, but there really needed to be more of a vocal distinction between the three teen guys.

I like the cover and the (first part) of the title ... I really do NOT like when there has to be an explanation of the book in the title (A Scifi Alien Love Story ... just drop that and let people read the blurb to find that out). That just seems corny to me.

Marking this as read isn't quite right since it's really a DNF at about halfway. I'll copy my review from audible:

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Review is not spoiler-free for the first half of the book.

Despite young adult romance and sci-fi being some of my favorite genres, I could not get into this book. The characters fell very flat, and Sage in particular was terribly annoying. At every turn, she was whiny and selfish, and she always seemed to fixate on the entirely wrong things. Like, when she discovered her sort-of boyfriend was a alien, the first question she asked was why he kissed the mean girl at the Christmas party. On top of that, I could never be bothered to care about their relationship. All the development happened off-screen, and the author did not do a good job of making it clear why they even like each other, other than being childhood friends. In all, the writing felt very lackluster, and nothing about it was terribly engaging.

As for the narration, she emphasized Sage's whining to the extreme, and I think that is a big part of why I couldn't stand the book. I think she took the teenage girl voice too far, making nearly every single line sound like a whine. I would not recommend this book.

Great read!

I've never been a big fan of sci-fi. But I love a good romance. So when I read the description of this book I though it might be a bit weird. But I gave it a whirl. I loved it and was super disappointed to learn that now I have to wait for the second installment. What a great story teller Carrie is! Great character development and she kept the story moving. I devoured it. I'm not going to spoil the story by giving a blow by blow. I hate reviews like that. I like to read the book it self. But if you want to know if it's worth your time, I can tell you that I loved it and would read it again and again! Absolutely a story I will come back to!

Very emotional.
I hope and prey that is isn’t the last we see of Adam and Sage, I don’t like this cliffhanger/HFN ending like this, leaves to many questions... what’s in the box? Will Zane show his face again? With Adam come and get Sage to be with him? Does Sage find a way to call Adam? What’s her grandparents like is still still leery of people? And so many more. This was all in Sage’s POV and will leave me in a book hangover from all the twists, and turns.
Trigger warning- domestic abuse and abuse of minors (hitting, punching...)

Sci-Fi YA romance that's quite catching and being a debut book for the author I can't wait for what she comes up with next. Sage and Adam were amazing characters. This is told in Sages point of view, there's some trigger warning stuff as child and domestic abuse.
