Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. What first caught my attention about this book is that it's by Pendleton Woolen Mill. I have visited there many times and love their high quality items. Plus I love camping so I knew this book would be a win. The sections are very informative. The national parks information was interesting and I like that they mentioned less popular national parks. This is a quick overview of several parks but it's a good starting point to consider which parks to research more about. The rest of the book gives great advice for people who are new to camping or people who haven't camped in a while and could use a refresher.
This is a pretty basic and condensed introduction to the world of camping. I think it’s a good starter book, particularly if you’re camping in the USA, as it lists national parks and includes short descriptions of each one. It quickly describes different forms of camping such as backpacking, bicycle camping, car camping, etc. thereby introducing you to various methods which you can then further research. It includes some good tips for beginners, including how to select a campsite, build a fire, wash dishes, etc. It also has a section dedicated to camping with kids that provides helpful information and recommendations to help everything run more smoothly. As well as a great section on camping with dogs and how to do it with your dog’s safety and comfort in mind.
Overall, this book would work best for absolute beginners who want to learn more but aren’t quite sure where to start or what questions to ask. It is essentially, a jumping-off point.
The Pendleton Field Guide to Camping is an outdoors guide for all ages from Pendleton Woolen Mills. Due out 31st March 2020 from Chronicle Books, it's 208 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is a well done, information rich resource with a logical and easy to follow format. A short introduction is followed by an essay on the benefits and attractions of camping and the outdoors as well as a listing of some US national parks, their locations and attractions followed by some suggestions for finding enjoyable non-park camping possibilities. This chapter also includes a number of good online resources for planning camping trips as well as tips on finding camping spots in less traveled areas. The next sections give an overview of types of trips (backpacking, cycle camping, motorcycle/car camping, vans, campers, and 'glamping'). Possibly the most useful information in the book is presented in chapter 5 with detailed lists of equipment and resources which will make most preparation successful and stress-free.
The third section contains suggestions and plans for actually executing the preparation and getting outdoors. There are special sub-chapters on camping with kids and pets (dogs). There are a lot of good tips for camping appropriate gear, snacks, and some general rules.
Camping is a wonderful way to use free time and has numerous physical and mental health benefits. This is a good support and resource book for getting active and getting outdoors.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I got a digital copy of this book and it was hard to read it because of the copyright watermark blocking the words. I was able to understand the idea of the book and as a camper I already know most of the stuff in this book but it's great for first timers. This book tells you what to bring and how to organize the camping area, and gives you some ideas of places to go camping in the US and when to go. It gives you some nice tips and it's like a to-do list before going camping. I would use it to make sure I'm not leaving any behind. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
The styling of the book is great. Very nice graphics are sprinkled throughout. As a camping book, there is nothing inside you could not get from a decent website. Perhaps if you have never camped before it would be useful. As a coffee table book it falls short because it is almost entirely text and cute graphics. This was a big miss for Pendleton. I really wish there had been some great photography. How do you list your favorite national parks and not include photos of them. Coffee table books are meant to be perused and revisited. There is no reason to revisit this book.
A quick and simple to read guide for beginners who hold curiosity about camping and the outdoors. Pendleton's Feild Guide snapshots each US National Park, and details lists and websites to reference for further camping advice. This is a great book for those who have not had much experience with camping, and makes the outdoors accessible by creating a sort-of DIY guide. By no means is this book intended to be a sole camping guide, but perhaps a coffee table book to crack open and lead the reader in a direction of where their interest lies next.
I'm so confused by what the purpose of this book is. The first half is all about NPs in the US but doesn't tell you where to camp at those NPs. Then the second half is a basic guide how to go camping. The eARC was hard to read due to the copyright mark across the centre of the page. Some useful new information on the parks available inside but I wouldn't recommend purchasing this book. It should be just given away as a promotional item (I was very surprised to see it for sale on the book sellers websites). More informative pictures and information can be found elsewhere unfortunately.
Initially NetGalley allowed me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. I wasn't able to read this copy before it expired, so I read a digital version of this book after it was released. This is my review of the published digital version.
A great guide for camping! It was straightforward and easy to understand and had a great section on National Parks. It also covers a lot of basics, especially what you should be taking with you. (Which I needed a refresher on. My dad used to advise me on what to pack, but now that he has passed it is up to me to remember.)
An excellent guide, full of informations an facts. I liked it and it would be great to read it in the final release due to the watermarks. Recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mien.
The first part of the book, with the history of the parks and a little info about them was my favorite. I found several parks that I'm now interested in visiting that I probably would have never considered. My only critique would be that I wish there were pictures to accompany the section about each park. I feel like with photos this would have been a 5 star book.
I don't know what stood out to me in selecting this book to read. I don't...camp. At all. I've gone maybe a handful of times in my life? Whether it was the cover art or the description, I wanted to read it. This field guide made me want to go camping too. This book was an uncorrected digital arc that I received for the purpose of reviewing. The art is just so stunning. I couldn't get over it. Honestly most of the park illustrations would make a great hipstery tattoo (not in a bad way). The history sections were brief but intriguing. I don't mind that part being so brief because it was concise (but very interesting)! I think I missed being able to see the actual park images on the pages. I'm not sure it would fit the aesthetic of the book, but I did find myself missing the view. I really enjoyed the established by dates and the when to go section. Crater Lake is the park I'm most tempted to go to now! I didn't realize there were other ways to camp besides the old tent set up so that was neat! The how to camp section was by far the most interesting section and the real meat of the book. The most important section of that was probably how to make a good cup of coffee. This book really covers their bases in a way that only extremely well-prepared people or people with anxiety would. I really appreciated that there was an entire section to keeping your dog safe while camping. One of the only times I've been camping was with my dog and some of our friends and it was very stressful. I think beyond the casual and enthusiastic campers, this would be a great book for preppers to read
An excellent guide for any and everyone. Whether a camping pro or newbie, the information in this book is interesting and educational. Even if you're not a camper, you'll find the info interesting.
