Lots of Odd Information and Error-Filled Recipes

Like most books capitalizing on the hot, hot, hot keto trend, this book is a hot mess! Yes, it does have close to 500 recipes, which might be all that some people care about. But the book has serious flaws in several respects.

Compared to most books that focus on keto recipes, this one has a fairly substantial introductory section. However, I did find it poorly organized, and it sometimes contradicted itself. Some scientific statements were just flat-out wrong. It almost appeared to me as if these informational mini-essays were just copied from a variety of websites and cobbled together into a disorganized mishmash of ideas. The author was very irregular in the formatting of the various sections and subsections, which sometimes made it hard to follow or truly figure out what related to what. For instance, there was a section of the keto diet and eyesight; only two paragraphs seem to be about eyesight, and the rest of this section is about cardiovascular disease and polycystic ovary syndrome! The author also uses list and color to format, but this isn't done consistently.

The recipes, too, almost seemed like they were taken from a variety of places all over the internet and perhaps just changed slightly to make them this author's “creation.” As a testament to this, some recipes were written in metric measurements (grams and mLs), others were written in imperial (teaspoons and cups) measurements, and some were written in the strange mixture of both. Also, while the recipes did include nutritional information, they didn't always include the same information, even the very important information about carbohydrates; sometimes just carbs were given while at other times net carbs were given. The quantity of an ingredient was sometimes left off. There was odd formatting within the ingredient list itself. Sometimes spaces were missing or were too large. The ingredient list was not in the same order as they were used the directions; this is a huge pet peeve of mine as I believe every cookbook should have the ingredients list in the order used. It makes it much easier to see if you've missed an ingredient when you are actually preparing the recipe. Some proportions of ingredients appeared to be off, to lesser or greater degrees. One that really jumped out at me, even though it is a relatively small issue, was the use of one entire teaspoon of rosemary in a 2-egg omelet recipe. Rosemary is very strong, and that much would overwhelm such a small amount of ingredients.

I did receive an ARC copy of this book, but it still had the same spelling, grammar, ingredient, and spacing issues in the published version. Despite the plethora of recipes, because of the copy-and-paste nature of the recipes and the other issues I've described, I do not feel like I can recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This is a lengthy book, which gives a lot of recipes for a beginner to the Keto diet and also gives you the background of what the keto diet is and how to apply it to your life, to help lose weight. The first ten percent of the book is the theory part of the book, laying out what the keto diet is and the science behind it all. It gives variations for vegetarians and vegans, but points out that they will need to make sure they take supplements and minerals, to make up for anything the diet may make them deficient in.

There are some annoying bits to the book, in that it is obviously for the US market and some of the ingredients and descriptions are not things I have ever heard of. There are also recipes in the next section that tell you how many servings they are for, but have quantity issues, using the letter ‘t’ or ‘T’ next to the ingredient. Is this tablespoons or teaspoons? The recipes at the halfway mark are much better at this and detail it in full, but now don’t show how many people or servings each recipe is for, which could lead to massive calorie overload! One of the recipes for a salad tells you to use a whole cabbage – not sure I could manage a whole one myself! The recipes at the start, the examples, are also repeated further along in the book, word for word, which makes this bit repetitive!

The 14 day meal plan gives you a list of meals and snacks for each day, but make sure you are happy to have the same main meal or snack a few days in a row! The book does however, give you loads of recipes, for breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, soups and just about anything you could think of. It gives you a list of foods you should not eat and those that you can, but some of this confused me a bit, with a description of any vegetable that grows above ground being ok, but then corn and peas are not allowed. You have to make sure you look at the G.I. (Glycaemic Index) for each item to ensure the carb content is as low as possible!

The explanation can be a bit repetitive, but I guess if you are new to the idea of the keto diet, you need to get your head around all the rules about the diet and what you can or can’t eat. It is quite a different approach to what most of us in the modern world were brought up eating and what we have been told is healthy or not. There may be some side effects to the diet, as it can be an extreme change to your current diet, but it also tells you to take this change slowly and adjust your diet accordingly, but not drastically. An interesting read and a diet to consider for losing weight and keeping an eye on possible medical issues that could occur with excess weight. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
