What a cliffhanger!! I've been waiting for this encounter for such a long time!! Just what will the father say!!! Been enduring it since volume 1!! Anyway, yes, I finally get to see Katsura-san again!! And sensei's fake birthday was s hilarious chapter (and the extra chapter about the preparation!!!!)
Honestly, putting the main couple and the side couple together is such a great idea that I’m not sure why more manga don’t do it. The opening chapters of this volume do so and they all play off one another beautifully, mixing the very silly with the rather heartfelt.
This shrine visit is a fun seasonal event with this particular mix of people. Fumi unintentionally manipulating Akatsuki into going is just the start of things, but a lot of this is actually concerned with Yoh and Aioi’s not-a-relationship.
After Aioi finally confessed… nothing happened. After his Christmas present… nothing happened. An unexpected celebrity cameo splits the group up and I enjoyed seeing Fumi and Akatsuki dispensing advice to the other two.
This also slowly unveils Akatsuki’s family dynamic and, well, it’s not surprising that he’s as withdrawn as he is. I was relieved that it wasn’t exactly deadbeat manga dad or anything, instead being a little more complicated than that.
Still, it’s nice to see him opening up and for Fumi to realize that not all families are the same. Naturally, this leads to Fumi going overboard in her usual style, but it makes for a good time. This volume, far more than the others, really makes use of the cast it has built up and in some excellent ways.
There is a bit of a growing sense that this manga really doesn’t care how old anybody dating anybody else might be, which does remain one of those things. Not my favourite aspect, certainly, but I can get around it here.
The latter part goes back to the idea of changing levels of affection in a relationship, but no points for guessing that this is just Akatsuki holding himself back. Too bad he has Fumi around though.
She ends up throwing fuel on the fire with a little request that’s a lot of trouble, particularly with the denouement. It’s a good place to leave off the volume, even if I did see it coming a mile off (Akatsuki’s parting words are pretty hilarious either way).
It’s a very readable volume of a really good series. There’s not much to complain about that you likely haven’t made your mind up about already and, if you have, you probably aren’t even reading this review.
4 stars - solidly enjoyable and it expanded its leads while also bringing its whole cast into the mix for some excellent scenes with them. A cozy little read that hasn’t lost its lustre yet.
Bello bello.
The relationship between the two MC has finally progressed a lot more in this chapter. Really exciting panels that had me giggling and anticipating so much more. We finally are at the beginning of an interaction that we have been waiting for for many volumes, and I’m really excited to see what’s gonna happen in the next volume.
Am I going to go the full series thinking there just isn't all that much chemistry between the main characters...
Still, this was an excellent volume. Yoh and Isshin are adorable together, so it was fun to finally see progress in their relationship, with Fumi and Akatsuki giving them advice at their New Year's shrine visit. Akatsuki definitely seems to be getting more development; his backstory was great, and I kind of loved that he actually hadn't realized how much self-doubt he'd been harboring until he actually started speaking it out loud.
This also leads to him telling Fumi that because he was able to open up to her so much emotionally, it changed the way he wants to interact with her physically: he's trying to be really careful to focus entirely on the depth of their relationship, giving the rest time to grow naturally once she's out of school and their age gap is a little more appropriate.
Her dad showing up at the worst possible time is a funny way to transition to the next volume, although the teaser kind of spoils things, because it doesn't seem like he's all that horrified by his daughter sharing a bed with her employer. Should still be fun to see how that shakes out, especially since Akatsuki doesn't have any real family of his own left.
Cute appearances by other side characters, with an amusing unbirthday party with a set of people Akatsuki would've never invited himself...
I really don't know if this will actually become any sort of a favorite series, but I'm enjoying it more as it goes on, which is good progress. Usually with shoujo I start to lose interest as the volumes drag out.
With regards first to the leads, it was nice to see Akatsuki and Fumi be more open towards each other. I believe that that is a sign of how progressive the relationship is. I can't say I'm surprised by the cliffhanger because we probably did know that at some point this was really bound to happen. Irregardless, I'm excited to see what happens next.
Next, Aioi and Yoh! Y'all is it wrong that I'm really more invested towards them than the leads? I really like seeing their relationship continue to progress too. Yamamori-sensei, please give them more screen time or make a manga spin-off about them! LMAO HAHAHA
Chapter 62 - In all the past chapters any time the male lead gave physical affection to Fumi she either panicked and pushed him away and/or yelled EHHH (every single time unfortunately.) But now she’s feeling agitated and sad because he doesn’t touch her that much anymore and she thinks it might be because he doesnt find her attractive as a girlfriend. And I’m just there reading like *sighs* Fumi you annoy me so. fucking. much.
welp character growth I guess?
Consists of chapters 58 - 63
read from July 5th to July 5th (writing this cos goodreads is acting up)

Akatsuki opened up more to Fumi by telling her about his childhood! Fumi organises a birthday party attended by almost all the characters she has met so far. Fumi then becomes bolder by seeking close contact with Akatsuki and he would like to sleep and make other things with her but he wants to wait for her to grow up. He is so sweet when he hugs and kisses her. But at the end a cliffhanger.
