Why do I act the way I do? How can I think one thing, and do another? I know better! Why do I feel like a different person some days, on top of the world sometimes and horrible at other times?
There are answers to all of these questions and Anderson Silver has compiled teachings from Stoicism and other schools of thought in Your Duality Within to help you navigate through them. A follow-up to the very successful Your User’s Manual, Your Duality Within is the second book in a three-book series tackling the most basic questions of our humanity. This collection of thoughts not only gives the reader much sought after answers but also provides the tools for managing the dual personality within in the ultimate pursuit of an anxiety-free life. Meant as a light read that the reader can come back to and meditate on periodically, Anderson has done a wonderful job of condensing fundamental teachings, making Your Duality Within a straightforward read in answering some of the most pressing questions about your own psyche.
A quick, actionable, and worthwhile read. After finishing it, I, and the reader more generally, can’t help but to ask “what side of my duality is wanting/thinking/doing this?” And that’s a very important, perhaps revolutionary, question.
I really enjoyed Volume 1 of this series and Volume 2 was even more enlightening. Your Duality Within opened up my eyes to aspects I hadn't considered and really helped me identify how I can better deal with my struggles. So grateful I found this author.
Just like the first one, this is helping me really change the way I approach life. It gave me the tools to be more present in the moment and live more purposefully.
The author is 2 for 2. We need more books like this. Straight forward, no BS, no fluff and tons of great information. I'm leaving now about myself in my middle age than than I did my whole life. Thank you and I'm looking forward to the next one already.
The second amazing book by Anderson Silver! It has truly helped me understand the duality in the human mind. I can now recognize when and why I let the autopilot take over and even look back and analyze moments in my life where I have acted a certain way. Highly recommended for everyone, specially during this difficult and anxious period we are all going through.
A wonderful book that let’s you recognize and reflect on your two distinct selves. On its endeavor of defining and suggesting the utility of the duality within, the author takes notions from: philosophy, psychoanalytics, evolutionary biology, psychology and sociology. And then, the author ties the presented ideas to Stoicism. As such, the variety of the presented ideas not only makes for an interesting read, but also ignites the reader’s interest in learning more about Stoicism. That being said, compared to the first book (“Your User’s Manual”), “Your Duality Within” is slightly repetitive and takes a bold stance regarding people being innately good without any previous elaboration on why that might be the case. As such, that part of the book feels incomplete.
A great book for understanding your inner monologue
Volume 2 is a great follow up book. It continues the theme in the author’s engaging, easy to read style. Anderson Silver’s books break the mould of many Stoicism books that I have read which follow a set format of “here’s the history of stoicism”, “here’s what stoics did”, “the end”. The books are more of a modern slant on philosophy and offer practical guidance, all delivered in a humble, non macho, non US centric way. I’m just about to start volume 3 and I’m looking forward to it.
I bought this book on Amazon April 2021. I read it in two days. The book was published in 2019. The book contains 125 pages and 14 chapters. I liked the cover page, the title, but I am extremely disappointed while reading this book. I was confused, there was no clear benign, no clear analysis of a given statement, only sentences and on each page quotes from known philosophers. I was reading the authors text, then I needed to stop and to read quotes, and there was no direct link. If the author wanted to use quotes on each page, he needed first to state the quote, explain, give proof, example, and conclusion for each. I only give two stars as it was printed on high quality paper by Amazon Italia, and because of the lovely cover page. If you are in the self-help world, only last 10 pages are useful, but this you can find on the Internet.
It took me almost a year, but I finally mustered up enough courage to finish it. The teachings in the book are too entry-level for my taste now, which is why I think I would've given it a higher rating if I had finished it a year ago.
