This book pushes Kat into one of her darkest crucibles yet. The book’s central question, “Kat followed the path of the seer but at what price?” sets the tone for a chapter steeped in sacrifice, moral ambiguity, and the tightening grip of destiny. This episode leans heavily into the tarot archetype of The Devil, exploring themes of bondage, temptation, and the cost of power. Kat’s choices begin to echo back at her with sharper edges, and the world around her feels increasingly claustrophobic as forces she once thought she understood reveal deeper, more dangerous layers. Cronshaw’s trademark pacing keeps the novella taut, while the emotional stakes continue to rise in ways that feel both inevitable and unsettling. As part of the larger serial, The Devil serves as a turning point, one where Kat’s agency is tested, her alliances strained, and her path forward clouded by the consequences of earlier decisions. It’s a moody, introspective entry that deepens the overarching arc and sets the stage for the final stretch of her journey.

This episode of Kat’s story has taken on a decidedly darker tone as she seeks to regain her memories or make sense of her recovered memories. Kat’s journey has taken her from being a naive princess to a very astute individual seeking to make sense of her world. This series keeps getting better with each episode. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

The symbolism between the MC and the devil tarot card is truly present. Two forces pulling at the MC, with the outcome yet to be clearly determined. There will definitely be more to this storyline, and I think I have caught up to being in the pre release waiting game soon. I will keep an eye out for more episodes. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.

Twisting and turning

Kat's story keeps shifting. The closer she gets to finding herself, the more decisions she makes that are unlike the self she can't remember. Can't wait to read the tower and see what kind of person she becomes when she leaves the cocoon she's trapped within.

I flew through this one, as it was intense, and I was hungry for things to happen. More and more truths are revealed, but still, again, not enough for her to piece all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Fast read.
Kat is trying to figure out who she is, while dealing with the withdrawals of mantari in the short continuation of the story.
