I’m not sure this is where I should have started my reading experience with this author. This book is more suspense than romance and that’s totally fine, but it’s something I don’t usually read. I enjoy a good romantic suspense story, but if the romance takes a back seat to the suspense, more often than not, I find myself skimming and skipping. I’m only putting this in my review because if you are new to this author like I am and you feel like I do, I would probably recommend starting with the Steele brothers.
Taking all that aside because that’s totally on me and not the author, I must say that as far as suspense goes, she nailed this one right to the end. If you’re good with the romance part of the journey taking a back seat to everything else, this author is pretty good at keeping the reader on their toes and invested in the story.

Great book, I love this guy , he’s cool, he’s got attitude in spades , he’s excellent at his job, and he’s constantly fighting pain both physically and mentally.
His meeting Sunny is both the best thing he’s ever done and the most life changing.
Through it all he keeps his sense of honour, he’s the modern day knight in shining armour.
Sunny is wonderful, she a very strong woman,she’s sensitive and feeling and when she loves it’s deep .
If she’s betrayed it takes a lot to make her give up on that person, and it seems she prefers dogs to humans, but that wasn’t always the case.
These two have a chemistry that grows and unfolds with the storyline.
Get ready for sweet blinding romance , and tense moments that break your heart, pain and passion in droves .
This is a great book , looking forward to reading Ryder’s book

I didn't know what to expect when I first started this book, especially with not having read Ms. McKinney before. What I ultimately got was a story full of twists and turns, a romance that was often on the back burner, as well as a cast of compelling characters who kept me constantly questioning the definition of good versus bad. It's a solid series starter that kept me on the edge of my seat with each turn of the page and that has me greatly anticipating the next book in this series.
Max Jagger is a former Navy Seal who became a homicide detective. His past is littered with emotionally painful moments and it's made him a man not easily defined now. When readers first meet him they see a brooding man, someone with a lot of attitude and an aura of mystery, one who doesn't trust easily. He's actually somewhat unlikable at the start, but as the story progressed glimpses of a kind heart and caring nature came through and I started to root for him. He's clearly a man on edge though and with the death of his friend things are about to become even more complicated with a new murder. Meeting the woman accused of the murder changes his life irrevocably and takes him on a journey full of secrets and danger, a journey with a slow burn romance that helps him to heal from his painful past.
Sunny Harper is a dog trainer (with an utterly charming collection of dogs surrounding her)...and now an accused murderer with blood literally on her hands. The town wants her to pay for her apparent crime, but Max doesn't think things are as they appear and goes out of his way to protect her when it becomes clear that her life is next to be in danger. Sunny's a sassy heroine with a strong will and a strong sense of loyalty. She's got a lot of emotional baggage from a past that has left her life shrouded in mystery and seems older than her age suggests. She's a person you can count on though too which is just what Max needs as his life continues to spiral out of control. Their connection starts out as friends with the goal of solving a crime while slowly evolving into something more romantic which gave them time to build a strong foundation that had me cheering them on to HEA.
This was a satisfying series starter focused on the mystery and secrets found in a small town. It's a tale full of action and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat while crafting a romance that's clearly secondary to all else. The main couple have both been hurt by the past, still struggle with it today, in a journey that made them all the stronger by being together. Jagger's a man in pain at the start, a man about to implode, and it's only through his time with Sunny that he's able to stay sane. Sunny too is made better by her time with Jagger and their strengthening bond put a smile on my face. Surrounding this compelling main couple was an equally entertaining cast of secondary characters (from Lieutenant Colton to recent academy graduate Tommy Darby to Max's brother Ryder as well as a few others) who added their own personal issues to the storyline which made this an even stronger story. Though I wish the romance between Max and Sunny had been more in the forefront, I still found this an exhilarating read with suspenseful twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages and hoping to revisit these characters soon!

4.75 Stars. When I started this book I had no idea it was a spin-off of the enthralling Berry Springs series. Once I made the connection I was thrilled. It’s been awhile since I read a book by this talented author, and I knew she would write a story that would deliver. Deliver she did, as the plot was complex, the characters were flawed and pulled you into their world. The storyline didn’t follow the expected path The web of intrigue and the element of surprise, took this suspenseful romance to the next level.

I could not get into this story. I feel like the author wanted Jagger to be a antihero but to me he just came off as an awful person. Not relatable at all. I couldn't get passed 20%. Looking at the reviews it is different for everyone but this story just didn't click for me.

Jagger by Amanda McKinney is part of the Steel Shadows Security Series. This book follows the series about the Steele brothers. It also does include the Steel brothers who cameo in different places to help out.
Max Jagger is a detective who is on the edge. He has an instinct about finding the bad guys but also is just as likely to beat them as to arrest them. He is harsh, brash, and not really likable. I was uncertain when I started to read the book, if I was going to finish, but then he got under my skin. Sunny Harper is an unknown quantity. She seems to have secrets upon secrets, but I love her mixture of badass and complicated. To me, she makes Jagger much more likable as he begins to figure different things out.
I enjoyed reading Jagger by Amanda McKinney and am hoping that the next book might be about his brother (an interesting character introduced in the story). The story has a lot of twists and turns. You constantly change your mind on who is good vs bad. Jagger and Sunny are complicated characters who add their own element of drama to the story. There are a number of other characters that leave you wondering what their role is in the story. I loved the addition of the dogs, almost as characters and how the dog, Max allows Jagger to understand more of what is happening. There is nothing like a psychopath to add another level of drama to the story as well. Jagger by Amanda McKinney was a good read.

I have to admit that I wasn't sure that I was going to enjoy this one. Although it's a romance, really that takes second place to the mystery element of this book. To begin with, we didn't really even meet Jagger's potential love interest and his investigation and rookie sidekick Darby took centre stage. Jagger isn't actually that likeable, he has an aurora of the old gumshoe detectives, the fact that much of the story is told from his point of view gives it an almost Raymond Chandler like feel. I think that it was this that made me wonder if we were going to get on. Not that I don't enjoy that kind of read, it was just not what I had been expecting.
Sunny is an interesting character. She's clearly got a lot of baggage and history. I think that it mentions that she's in her late 20's, but in many ways, she seems to be an older character than this. Perhaps simply because of what she has been through.
For me, the suspense side of this book was the winner. Although there is romance here, it wasn't the main part of the story and I wasn't really that invested in their relationship. Jagger is Book 1 of Amanda McKinney's new Steele Shadow Investigations series and a spin-off of the Steele Shadows Security series. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in but this was an exciting, edge of your seat, thriller that will keep you second-guessing yourself until the end.
Jagger comes across as a brash and generally unlikeable kind of guy at first but then you start to get glimpses beneath that tough exterior. Sunny is a strong independent woman herself who has been to hell and back. Sparks fly instantly between these two.
Overall this was a great start to a new series and I look forward to reading Ryder's story next!

An addictive read. This is a murder mystery romance thriller, heavy on the investigation and light on the romance - which perfectly suited this book. The story is told 95% from Jagg's point of view and it was very well executed. The romance is slow burn and there are a few steamy sex scenes near the end. There are lots of twists and turns in this standalone drama. Characters from other books made brief appearances, but there's no spoilers for those stories. This was a 5 star read for me.

February 11, 2025I made it all of 7 pages in, with many unnecessary innuendos so early in the book, and then this gem happened and I decided that I was no longer interested in reading one more page.

Jagger is a phenomenal romantic suspense by Amanda McKinney. Ms. McKinney has once again impressed me with her writing. This is a well-written book and the characters...whooeee, they're second to none. Jagger is a homicide detective investigating his friend's murder and the theft of a scroll. Sunny is a loner and a bit of a mystery until she's attacked and the attacker winds up dead. Jagg and Sunny's story is packed, cover to cover, with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I enjoyed this book and can't wait for my next read from Amanda McKinney. Jagger is part of the Steele Shadows Investigations Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Disappointed
Normally I do not like to give a bad review. If it's bad, I just don't write any.... but I was so surprised that this book was not good at all, because this author is usually really good. The main character seems completely off, just rambling on and on and on about absolutely nothing. And the rambling just continues from one thing to another. It is just waaaaaaay too much! Then this odd rambling continues as he is rudely talking down to one of his officers. I could not even get through the second chapter, it was that bad, and I do not give up that fast on any book. I would definitely not give up on this author, but would not suggest reading this book.

Without exaggeration, Jagger was one of the best books I've read this year... Gripping, brooding, suspenseful, and sexy, with flashes of wicked, dry wit. An intricate, mysterious masterpiece... Loved it! The jaded Max Jagger and his intriguing enchantress Sunny are an unforgettable couple, and Amanda McKinney's writing is superb. Five solid stars, and this reader cannot wait to read Ryder's story.

Okay read
Just an okay read. Swithered with the three stars but eventually settled for two as it felt disconnected at times and characters who appeared weren’t always explained. Loved the intelligent but morose detective but others left me feeling bleh. Not an author I’ll look for.

I found this book to be a bit convoluted and wordy. I kept losing the thread of the story. Maybe that suits some readers, but it is not my choice of reading.

Jagger is the first book in Steele Shadows Investigations series by Amanda McKinney. Wow! Honestly, the series keeps getting better and better. This was completely brilliant, compelling, raw, breathtaking, at times heartbreaking story and such a wonderful read which I can’t express how much I loved. One of the talents that the author possesses is the knowledge how to develop, create the storyline and make you fall in love with her words, plot and the characters demanding your attention from start to finish. It is majorly written in Jagger POV which I loved, but I think I missed Sunny’s POV on special things and scenes and her thoughts. But it didn’t diminish my enjoyment in any way. I love we get a glimpse at the Steele brothers and the way they help Jagger out. I loved the added mystery and vibe of local legends, practicing magic and a full moon theories. This is a story about Max Jagger, former Navy SEAL turned homicide detective, and Sunny Harper, a real estate heiress. The characters are complex and resilient; the plot is strong with unpredictable twists and turns that will keep you guessing the whole time. It was enjoyable, steamy, dark, suspenseful, heartfelt and heartbreaking read with such cleverly and brilliantly written plot twist(s).
The chemistry and tension between Jagg and Sunny was everything. I liked them from the moment they interacted the first time. They lit the pages with their chemistry and cute witty banter/ smartass, sarcastic comments. They are each other’s match; sinfully sexy and intense. He can’t explain what exactly is about her that gets to him; he just knows that he is drawn to her. But also suspects that she is hiding something which makes him want to be cautious. With danger surrounding them, he wants to keep her safe. Jagg is charming, loving, caring, loyal, broody, moody, grumpy; but also jaded from the past and doesn’t trust easily. Sunny is loving, caring, fighter, survivor, vulnerable, loyal and jaded from the past. Separately they are beautiful mess, together they are perfectly imperfect. Neither of them in the beginning is looking for a relationship, or fully trust each other, but also can’t deny the strong connection or the chemistry they feel. They are passionate, a little bit angsty and intense. I loved their banter which was a highlight to getting to know them and my reading. They had a lot going on with unexpected twists and turns. I love their moments, dialogues and banter; how they are just drawn to each other, how gradually they let each other in and began to trust each other. They simply understand each other. Maybe they don’t make sense but when they are together – they are just perfect and exactly what they need in order to heal and move on from the scars of their past. Their love story is not perfect. It’s layered, fast paced, real, emotional, with depth, lies, secrets and edge. The pace of the story added to their romance and to them figuring out place in life and new circumstances of situation. It was flirty, fun, touching, heartbreaking and heartwarming. The epilogue was so amazing and it’s the perfect ending for them both.
Two words: INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL! It kept my attention at all times and I could not put it down. It was addictive, angsty, slow burn, sinfully sexy and intense, emotional, heartbreaking, enthralling and raw with real characters and a lot of heart and heartbreak. With relatable, wonderful and marvelous primary and secondary characters, an effortless writing, awe-inspiring details and a journey of self-doubting, love, secrets, lies, mystery, the author takes us on an emotional and beautiful journey of the characters, their struggles and their self-discovery. It’s filled with so much love, heart and heat, effortless and poignant writing with compelling, gripping storyline. I can’t wait for Jagg’s brother Ryder’s book. I highly recommend it.

This is my first Amanda McKinney novel and it blew me away with its raw emotion, intensity, and gripping murder mystery.
Detective Max Jagger is a brooding and angry workaholic who is determined to find out who killed his mentor Lt. Seagraves. But the Chief wants him off the case because he is too close and “he is one bad decision from being fired”. As if his life couldn’t get any worse, he’s called to another murder the same night as Seagraves’ funeral and finds a woman holding a gun and standing over a dead man. Can the murders be tied together? And who is this beautiful and defiant woman with a tragic past who seems to have a power over him. He’s never felt so damn protective over a woman ever. He uses women and goes on his way. What makes her so different?
Sunny Harper is a dog trainer. A victim. A survivor. A fighter. She finally found peace and solitude with her dogs and her cabin in the woods and then the assault and murder happens and the rude and aggressive Max Jagger appears in her life. Why does he feel like he needs to protect her day and night? She can take care of herself. Then there’s more bad news that her past has reared its ugly head again. She’s not the same person she was six years ago and will not back down from what is coming.
I love Jagg and Sunny’s story. It’s raw and off-limits at first and watching them both slowly break down the years of mistrust as they spend more time together is a pleasure to see. And let’s not forget the sexual attraction that is very hot and worth waiting for. I was also intrigued by officer Tommy Darby’s story who wants to make an impression in the police force and will do anything to make a name for himself. In addition, I give kudos to Lt. Colson who is not only dealing with a pregnant wife at home, but he is trying to keep Jagg in line so he doesn’t lose his job. A good cast of characters including Sunny’s dogs, Athena, Max, Tango, and Brutus.
Overall, I loved my introduction to Amanda McKinney’s Steele Shadows Investigations series. I was completely captivated from the beginning and read the book in one sitting. If you like bad boys, alpha females, and enthralling murder mysteries, give this book a try.

Well this book was certainly not what I expected and Jagger was not the character I thought he would be..Because in previous books we only got glimpses of him and he seemed a descent kind of guy always willing to help the Steele brothers.
In this book we see the real Max Jagger,he is a force to be reckoned with that is for sure. A Homicide Detective he is a power house of a man and very imtimidating to others but was damn good at his job.
It was on a call out that he meets a mysterious woman with a gun,standing over a body in the park.
Sunny Harper appears to have everything from a wealthy family she lived a comfortable life,until an incident changed her life forever and almost killed her.
From that day she changes her life and becomes a recluse lives a simple life estranged from her family, and now she finds herself being accused of murder and a witch.
Strangely though Jagger is compelled to protect Sunny and prove her innocence,and as they spend more time getting to know one another their attraction becomes stronger.
But the town is against Sunny and she has alot of work to convince everyone that she is not guilty of killing someone...and when somebody from her past is thrown into the mix threatening her life the stakes grow even higher.
With small towns gossip and speculation is ripe and the hatred for Sunny is strong,..Is Jagger willing to lose his job over Sunny .?
This book is full of twists and turns you have to really pay attention to all the information to follow what is going on.Its a very intriguing story and anyone who loves a good murder mystery sprinkled in with their romance..Then they will enjoy this story.
Its a bit of a slow burn between Jagger and Sunny the attraction is there but it takes them a bit to finally get together.
But slow burns don't bother me I enjoy the journey of them getting together,and the after math...Its a bit of a rollercoaster.
I loved this story and was quite pleased with Amanda Mckinney's take on Jaggers story,we are also introduced to new characters too like Ryder and Darby..leaving you wondering if they will get a story.
This is a fascintating story that keeps you guessing until the end.

TL-DR: Read this if you are looking for some good writing. Try reading this if you are looking for an edge of the seat thriller, because it is that for a good part of the story. Don’t read this if you are looking for more romance-erotica and less thriller.
It is well-written and held my attention for a good part despite the things I did not like. There’re some really good lines in here too.
What particularly stood out for me is how the author uses one character’s PoV to establish the sketch of another character. I quite liked this use of having chapters dedicated to individual character PoVs. Case in point, the first chapter from Darby’s PoV actually helped me understand the layer’s in Max Jagger’s character far better than the chapters from his own PoV.
This one’s a mystery and the attention stays on that. It is peppered with just the right amount of romance, according to me. If you ask me, I’d say the author has given equal attention to the mystery and the romance. (I’ve never considered erotica to be equivalent to romance; there’s just enough here as much was needed.)
All of this considered, I can safely say that the author writes really well. It lacks coherence in some places. First, I didn’t understand the need of the whole Wiccan angle in the story. It does nothing to propel the story forward, and works as well as any other back story would have.
Next up, is Max Jagger’s obsession with connecting every crime to the Black Bandit, without an obvious evidence of the same. His reasoning: the crimes happen too close to each other w.r.t the number of days. In my opinion, not a strong enough reason. At times the descriptions, especially the monologues go to a lot of places making focusing and remembering details a little tough. Too much text so sometimes something that should surprise don't.
I think this is also why the big reveal does not feel big enough; it sort of feels flat. I don’t know what was missing, but something definitely was. Basically, there’s so much guesswork going on, that I spent a lot of my time just connecting the dots, but eventually giving up.

Jagger is an adult romantic suspense novel and is the first book in the Steele Shadows Investigations series by Amanda McKinney. I have not read too many suspense novels lately, and I forgot how much I enjoy them. especially when there is a steamy romance attached to the plot. Jagger really hit the spot for me. I can't wait to continue on with the Steele Shadows Investigation series. if you are a fan of suspense and thriller stories, I think Jagger will be a great addition to add to your TBR list.
In Jagger we meet our main character, Max Jagger, who is a former Navy Seal turned homicide detective. I have been super into all things true crime lately, so I love a good suspense fiction novel every now and again. (and maybe more often now that I remember how much I enjoy them) so this was really more of a character driven question for me. Would I enjoy the characters and the overall plot. And the answer to both of those questions is yes. Max is the epitome of a brooding main character with a dark past, and like most brooding characters, I fell instantly in love with him and wanted to uncover all of his deep dark secrets. Max thinks there is more than meets the eye with his newest murder case. Sunny Harper was found holding a bloody weapon over the dead body, but Max doesn't think everything is adding up.
Sunny Harper's name cracked me up. She is so not sunny in disposition. She is stubborn as all get out, and I loved that about her. The mystery was the primary plotline in this book, but as Max and Sunny worked together (somewhat reluctantly) there was a great romance simmering in the background. While I do wish it took center stage a little more, I can appreciate that it was secondary to the actually murder and killer that was on the loose. Bottom line- if you are a fan of suspense stories featuring a murder mystery with a romance plotline woven in, then Jagger is going to be a novel that you will want to check out! I really enjoyed it.

(and maybe more often now that I remember how much I enjoy them) so this was really more of a character driven question for me. Would I enjoy the characters and the overall plot. And the answer to both of those questions is yes. Max is the epitome of a brooding main character with a dark past, and like most brooding characters, I fell instantly in love with him and wanted to uncover all of his deep dark secrets. Max thinks there is more than meets the eye with his newest murder case. Sunny Harper was found holding a bloody weapon over the dead body, but Max doesn't think everything is adding up.
Sunny Harper's name cracked me up. She is so not sunny in disposition. She is stubborn as all get out, and I loved that about her. The mystery was the primary plotline in this book, but as Max and Sunny worked together (somewhat reluctantly) there was a great romance simmering in the background. While I do wish it took center stage a little more, I can appreciate that it was secondary to the actually murder and killer that was on the loose. Bottom line- if you are a fan of suspense stories featuring a murder mystery with a romance plotline woven in, then Jagger is going to be a novel that you will want to check out! I really enjoyed it.

Omg! This was a fantastic read for me, and I don't normally do in depth murder, mystery anything. THIS was captivating AND it's still a Romance! A book I couldn't and didn't put down--no stopping place.
Max Jagger, or Jagg, medically retired SEAL, a detective for the region including Berry Springs, was investigating a murder. The summer solstice was approaching, along with more wiccans and more tourists ready to celebrate. A lot of the residents of the town were not happy, and even more so when another murder occurs.
Sunny Harper, ethereal beauty, well versed in Krav Maga, now injured and standing beside a lifeless body. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was she?
Jagg had a great 6th sense, and his gut was telling him there was way more to this story. It was also telling him Sunny was someone special. He didn't do special--ever.
He had a lot of questions and no answers, but someone was out for blood, Sunny's blood. He was fully vested in her, and her canine protectors, all four of them. He just didn't realize or want to admit to it, until ... well, let's just say he got his head jolted out of his nether hole.
A riveting, realistic journey with hold your breath moments to sizzling chemistry! Excellent, intriguing storyline, interesting characters, it all pulls you in then tosses you out, like coming awake in your own bed after having been in Berry Springs for a good long while. I do love when there are fur babies included also, and these played a significant part.
A stand alone read, but part of the Steele Shadows Investigations series. Jagger has it's own happy sigh ending, for these two mains anyway. So looking forward to reading more from this extremely talented author.

This saga just keeps getting better and better! Amanda McKinney takes the time to let you get to know the characters without slowing the story down. For instance, Max Jagger, ex-SEAL who was deemed physically unable to perform the job, becomes a homicide detective for Berry Springs Poice Department. You know right a way he has a chip on his shoulder because of his bad back.
His mentor from BSPD has been killed on the same night as a priceless piece of art is stolen from a local gallery. After his mentor's funeral Jagg finally decidew to head home when he hears a twinkling sound. He follows the sound, gun drawn and comes upon a tree with Wiccan symbols, chimes, vodoo dolls and candles. The city in in the middle of a heatwave along with a no burn order in place. He thinks this has something to due with the funeral. He will figure it out.
While talking about the tree and the funeral with his superior trying to connect the dots they get a call about a shooting in the park. Sunny Arlo is standing over the dead body of the local Pastor's son, with a gun in her hand. The witness has his own gun pointed at her, calling her a murderer. Jagg tells her to drop the gun which she does as she takes off. Jagg tackles her and asks her if she shot the Pastor's son. She says no. Did she kill his mentor, she says no again. He believes her. He can't explain it but he does.
His superior tells him to be careful, he is becoming a loose cannon. He is close to losing his badge. Sunny Arlo has him under some sort of spell. Jagg needs to put the pieces of the puzzle together, his mentors killer, the killer of the Pastor's son and the art thief have to be the same person right? It can't be Sunny, can it?

Wow! The twists just keep coming.
With each book that Amanda McKinney writes, her writing just keeps evolving and getting better. There is not one of her books that I do not like or have not enjoyed reading. For the Steele Shadows series, I am glad that she chose to write in the first person. It gives more depth to the characters and I feel like that would have been lost if written any other way.
The story of Jagger and Sunny is riveting! I knew I would love this book as I do the others. However, I was not expecting it to be so captivating. It quickly became my favorite. This book has everything you could possibly want in a book. Once you start you just can't put it down!
There are so many unexpected twists and turns in this book. You don't know what to believe from one chapter to the next. Just when you think you have it figured out, try again. I love the added POV from Darby. It gives another layer to the book. Who knows, maybe he will get his own book one day.
If I had to come up with something that I did not like or was disappointed in, would be the lack of interaction from other characters such as the Steele Brothers and characters from other Berry Springs books. There are some parts were they are mentioned but that's it, no actual interaction. I understand that each book is a different character and you want to explore that character, to get to know them but it's still small town Berry Springs and Steele Shadows Security. More interaction from other characters would be great.
Overall, I highly recommend this book!
