Four top experts provide a plan to help prevent the Parkinson's pandemic, improve care and treatment, and end the silence associated with this devastating disease Brain diseases are now the world's leading source of disability. The fastest growing of these is Parkinson's: the number of people with Parkinson's doubled to over 6 million over the last 25 years and is projected to double again by 2040. Harmful pesticides known to cause Parkinson's proliferate, many people remain undiagnosed and untreated, research funding stagnates, and the most effective treatment is now a half century old. In Ending Parkinson's Disease, four leading doctors and advocates offer a bold but actionable pact to prevent, advocate for, care for, and treat one of the great health challenges of our time. This is a critical guide for anyone who has or could be touched by this disease.
I see the four authors standing in the center of a crowd shouting “We can end this! It’s simple! Ban the pesticides!” They may be exactly right but, as they acknowledge, not a great deal has been accomplished in this arena other than the ban of DDT in the US since Rachael Carson’s cry 60 years ago. I remember reading that Michael J. Fox founded his foundation around 2000 with the goal of ending Parkinson’s within five years because the cure was right around the corner. Twenty years later, his foundation is still working hard trying to accomplish that goal. I am in no way downplaying the role of the foundation or these four authors as they and others play a vital role educating, lobbying, studying, and advocating for the Parkinson’s cure. For me, personally, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has been a source of understanding and hope and, along with the care and efforts of my ‘Movement Disorder Specialist”, provides a positive blueprint for my future. This book is one all families dealing with Parkinson’s should consider owning and lending.
Parkinsonism is a fast-growing group of neurological disorders, including best-known Parkinson’s Disease. In this newly released survey of the epidemiology, a collaboration of several leading medical scientists and policy experts present a broad and accessible introduction to the topics. Before publication, I received a protected PDF ebook from PublicAffairs of the Hachette Book Group, for purposes of reading and publishing a review on my blog and other social media. I am personally interested as a retired biomedical engineer, whose father has a long-term and now advanced case of PD.
Parkinsonism has a complexity of root causes. Genetics, environmental contamination, and patient experience all can have some component. The chapters are nicely organized into topics that dissect the issues – history and genetics, trends in occurrence, environmental pesticides, solvents and contaminated ground water, head trauma and diet, care-taking, new treatments, and public policy issues. Sometimes, within a topic, the writing takes too much of a smorgasbord and anecdotal approach for my taste. But in general, it is a concise flow, with minimal repetitiveness, and useful illustrations. My scientific interest is more on the level of cellular and chemical biology, and I found those topics to be glossed over in favor of statements of medical outcome. However, as a family member, the breadth and depth were just about right. It ends with a prescriptive call of 25 actions that should be taken to prevent the disease, advocate for resources and policy changes, care for those affected, and develop and improve therapies. This is an important topic, and the book rises to it. Recommended!
This book is being released, and I read it, during the COVID-19 pandemic. I have to say that I found the authors’ contention that “pandemic” should be expanded to include non-infectious diseases, because infectious disease is no longer a leading source of death and disability, to be too sensationalistic at this time and actually unnecessary to the understanding of Parkinsonism.
Over the past 15 years since I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease I've read maybe 20 books on PD..some covering the basics of the disease and some memoirs by people with Parkinson's...But this new book,Ending Parkinson's Disease, is unique...First, it is written by 4 of the best scientists/ PD experts in the world ( Ray Dorsey,MD, Mike Okun,MD, Bas Bloem,MD, and Todd Sherer, PhD)...They are the PD "Dream Team".. !! They are on the front lines of treatment and research for PD..So, their insights on where we are and where we need to be headed is based on working with this disease for years.. The book summarizes the history of the disease starting with James Parkinson's first observations and all the way forward to 2019..We see the step by step progress up to today.. (Part One) Part Two identifies possible causes for the disease and the need to consider environmental and genetic triggers ..Much more research is required... They define PD as a "global pandemic".....PD is the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world... Part Three is the "prescription for action": 25 measures to form a PACT..Prevent..Advocate..Care ...Treat.... This is the game plan to move the search for a cure forward. The American people embraced polio and the March of Dimes to stop that disease; then HIV.AIDS advocates were focused and aggressive and AIDS became treatable....If they can do it for polio and AIDS, we can begin our quest to find a cure for PD....Buy this book( All proceeds go to PD research..!) ,then follow the game plan and make the cure for PD a reality...………!!! Together..we can do it !!
This book was interesting to me as my dad has Parkinson's. It gave a bunch of background on the disease, talked about prevention, and discussed the future. I was hoping for more tips on how to prevent it, but I didn't get that. There were a few tips, but nothing specialized or out of the ordinary. There were inspiring stories of lots of people who got it and carried on, even improving their lives, and a lot of information about current research on alternative treatments.
Overall, I think this book has a lot of good research in it. It's interesting and insightful to hear the opinions from the authors and they do a good job of amplifying voices from the community. At times the book can be very inspiring and encouraging. I would recommend it for those who are trying to understand the history of the disease and possible advocacy efforts.
The authors of this book must be applauded for their work in identifying some key contributors to his debilitating disease. While most of the book deals with the environmental causes and seeking a pharmaceutical solution, it left me wondering if there's more out there. They mention one herbal option, at the end of one of the chapters, in a by-the-way sort of fashion. It turns out that this remedy even has some randomized, clinical trials to support it's use. The authors openly admit at the end of the book, disclosing that "we serve as consultants to companies and organizations that are engaged in Parkinson's disease advocacy, care, education, or research. These relationships undoubtedly influence our perspectives." Tens of millions of dollars are spent every year for research, yet the disease continues to become more common and affecting even the young. Sadly, this is the case for most diseases these days. Corporate profit is more important than true public health and wellness.
As the husband of a person with early-onset Parkinson's Disease, I'm pretty well versed on the subject. This book is an outstanding primer on what the disease is, the causes we know or suspect, the treatments available or coming soon, and actions we can all take to speed a cure and stop the tsunami of people getting the disease. This book is extremely approachable, easy to read, and covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. A great book for people new to the Parkinson's community and those of us years or decades in. We need everyone to join us in this fight. This book gives some great targets for activism that anyone can do. I will be recommending this book often.
informative and depressing look at PD. it lists the most common causes: industrialization- which has led to air pollution and increased use of pesticides (especially paraquat & TCE) - and head trauma. Suggested prevention: stay away from pesticides, exercise and diet. Government support of research for cure/treatment has declined even though the disease has become more rampant; little progress is being made in both cure and treatments. As with many things, citizen advocacy is needed.
I was diagnosed of Parkinson's Disease a couple of years ago, I had severe fatigue, difficulty with mobility and sleeping. I was given medications which helped but only for a short while. So i decided to try alternative measures and began on Parkinson's HERBAL TREATMENT from Kycuyu Health Clinic, It made a tremendous difference for me (Go to their website www. kycuyuhealthclinic. com ). I had improved walking balance, muscle strength and improved vision
This book I can only highly recommend, After just finishing reading it, I said" the human so dumb he shovels his own grave. This book was very well researched and easy to read and understand they just released a new documentary which gives a very good inside of the daily life of someone with Parkinson's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6tbH...
This book is not what I expected. It has very little to do with helping me with *my* PD and is mostly a call to protest against environmental issues that are highly correlated to causing PD, to advocate to Big Pharmaceuticals, NIH, and others to get on the ball to spend more research $, etc.
This book is a call to advocacy and to action for Parkinson's disease. It is divided into 3 parts. The first part details the development of Parkinson's diagnosis such as the first patients who were noted around the time of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. These characters were noticed by a doctor who recorded the symptoms like mal-aligned posture, shuffle walk, and dragged movement. That doctor was none other than Dr. Parkinson, hence, the disease gets it's name as Parkinson's Disease. He did not have the disease.
The book outlines a brief history of other viruses, illnesses, and medical conditions such as HIV, smallpox, and polio to the end that these medical conditions have largely been eliminated from the human population as a result of the time that people have taken to volunteer as medical subjects and the funding to do the research to end the disease.
My interest in reading this book is largely to do with a family member who has received the diagnosis and I realized that I didn't know a lot about it so I read about it. The book is easy to access. All definitions are provided along with a list of treatments in part 2. In part 3, it goes one step further than previous books that I have read, insofar as it speaks to advocacy, fund raising, and having a voice that is heard by governments who allocate funding to other medical conditions instead of Parkinson's disease. It advices on steps to take to advocate for the banning of substances that are commonly used in industry and farming such as paraquat and TCE (Trichloroethylene). Labelled as toxic to humans, they are regularly used on the Earth, in farming, and launderettes. Opposition to banning these products and removing them from the air and water supply (where they may or may not end up) has met with significant opposition largely due to funding for political campaigns. Let's hope that the politicians hear the voice of Parkinson's Disease organizations and people and end the use of chemicals that enter the blood stream and the brain of humans and are linked to Parkinson's Disease. It would be a start.
This is a must-read for everyone, for sure—especially politicians and college students who want to be doctors, researchers, or politicians. I want to say that these authors are right on everything they are doing--the only possible solution is to press on the government so that they ban these toxic chemicals AND, to ensure this is also done all over the world. We all share this planet, let's protect it.
Amazing the stuff we deal with that is actually killing us---but, just as the current issue with the ICE versus EVs---in which, it is a no-brainer to see that ICE cars are indeed killing us (literally) and our environment, but somehow, companies are still building and selling them. Need to stop!
I really like the numbers presentation and the fact that we are not investing more, either money or time trying to get to the root cause and prevent PD, not just treat it.
I already tried one of the PD Apps--will see that my wife uses it so that she can track her symptoms and how mediation is helping or not. Very good job on explaining where we are--thank you Drs.
But--you all need to read this book too. Go get it, read it, and let us have your two cents about its content.
Ending Parkinson's Disease offers a comprehensive and hopeful look at the ongoing battle against this debilitating neurological condition. It provides a clear and accessible overview of current research and treatment options while also offering a roadmap for the future.
The book emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and intervention, highlighting the crucial role of lifestyle factors such as exercise and diet in managing the disease. Dorsey also explores the latest advancements in deep brain stimulation and gene therapy, offering a glimpse into the future of Parkinson's treatment.
One of the most compelling aspects of the book is its focus on patient empowerment. The authors encourage readers to become active participants in their own care, to advocate for themselves, and to connect with the Parkinson's community.
Ending Parkinson's Disease is not just a medical textbook; it's a source of hope and inspiration for those affected by this condition, whether they're patients or caretakers. The book concludes with a powerful message of optimism, emphasizing the belief that with continued research and collaboration, a cure for Parkinson's disease is within reach.

My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease about four years ago. At first, we followed the conventional route prescription meds, physical therapy, and regular doctor visits. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, his condition gradually got worse. His memory declined, coordination became a challenge, and daily life was growing increasingly difficult for both of us.About a year ago, feeling like we were out of options, we decided to explore a more natural route. That’s when we came across NaturePath Herbal Clinic. To be honest, we didn’t expect much. But we were surprised within just a few months of starting their herbal program, there were noticeable improvements. His alertness sharpened, his mobility improved, and he seemed to have more strength and energy.Today, he’s more active, confident, and independent than he's been in years. It’s been a transformative journey, and I truly believe this natural approach made a real difference for him. If you or someone you care about is dealing with Parkinson’s, I’d definitely suggest taking a look at what NaturePath offers. Their website is www.naturepathherbalclinic.com info@naturepathherbalclinic.com
I attended the Parkinson’s Study Group conference in December 2024. At the conference, Dr. Ray Dorsey stunned the audience as he confidently claimed that PD is a man-made disease, and that we focus on researching genetics over prevention because everyone makes $$$ that way. Dr. Dorsey’s talk brought together the 2 things I am passionate about as he shared that mitigating the exponential rise of PD in the American population comes with cleaning our air, filtering well water, and banning certain pesticides and chemicals. I worked up the courage to tell Dr. Dorsey how eye-opening his talk was, and he gave me his book! Ending Parkinson’s Disease is digestible, entertaining, and thoughtful enough to make anyone understand that Parkinson’s Disease can and should be eradicated. I take the words of this book with me as I continue my job as a research coordinator for PD and work towards getting my masters in public health to be more involved in research on PD and the environment. I am looking forward to the next book “The Parkinson’s Plan” coming out this August.
My Partner, who is 66 years old, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease last year. We noticed that he was experiencing hallucinations, slow movement, disturbed sleep, and twitchy hands and legs when at rest. He had to stop taking pramipexole (Sifrol), carbidopa/levodopa, and 2 mg of biperiden because of side effects. Our family doctor recommended a PD-5 treatment from natural herbs centre . com, which my husband has been undergoing for several months now. Exercise has been very beneficial. He has shown great improvement with the treatment thus far. He is more active now, does more, and feels less apathetic. He has more energy and can do more activities in a day than he did before. As far as tremors I observe a progress, he improved drastically. I thought I would share my husband's story in case it could be helpful, but ultimately you have to figure out what works best for you. Salutations and well wishes
My wife was diagnosed of Parkinson’s Disease at age 61. She had severe calf pain, muscle pain, tremors, slurred speech, frequent falls, loss of balance, difficulty in getting up from sitting position. She was put on Senemet for 6 months and then Siferol was introduced and replaced the Senemet. During this time span she was also diagnosed with dementia. She started having hallucinations and lost touch with reality. Last year, our family doctor started her on Uine Health Centre PD-5 formula, 2 months into treatment she improved dramatically. At the end of the full treatment course, the disease is totally under control. No case of dementia, hallucination, weakness, muscle pain or tremors. My wife is strong again and has gone on with her daily activities as I share this experience. I’m surprised a lot of PWP haven’t heard of PD-5 formula. we got the treatment from their website uinehealthcentre. com
I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a year ago at the age of 67. For several months I had noticed tremors in my right hand and the shaking of my right foot when I was sitting. My normally beautiful cursive writing was now small, cramped printing. And I tended to lose my balance. The neurologist had me walk down the hall and said I didn't swing my right arm. I had never noticed! I was in denial for a while, as there is no history in my family of parents and five older siblings, but I had to accept I had classic symptoms. I was taking amantadine and carbidopa/levodopa and was about to start physical therapy to strengthen muscles. I used different supplements that didn't work, so last July, I tried the PD-5 protocol—the best decision ever! My tremors eased, my energy returned, and I sleep soundly. I feel like a new woman, and I can walk and exercise again. I got the PD-5 from ww w. limitlesshealthcenter. com
I was around 58 when my thumb started giving me problems. As time passed, I had other symptoms: hand tremors, restless sleep, muscle weakness, cognitive decline, voice spasms, and a stiff, achy right arm and ankle. At 60 I was diagnosed with PARKINSON’S DISEASE. I was on Carbidopa and Pramipexole for two years; they helped a lot but not for long. As the disease progressed, my symptoms worsened. With my neurologist's guidance, I started on PD-5 herbal formula from U.H.C. (Uinehealth Centre). The treatment worked very effectively; my severe symptoms, especially the tremors, simply vanished. I feel better now than I have ever felt, and I can feel my strength again. Visit or google Uinehealthcentre.net. My neurologist was very open when looking at alternative medicines and procedures; this PD-5 treatment is a breakthrough
Parkinson's Disease is a pandemic all its own; one that affects millions of people worldwide. It is the fastest growing neurological disorder, not even taking into account the many undiagnosed and untreated. The number of people affected by it is expected to double by 2040. First noted in 1817, this progressive disease is increasingly researched, but to date has no cure.
Ending Parkinson's Disease was written by four of the leading doctors in the neurologic field. They explain what is known about Parkinson's, giving symptoms, defined as well as possible causes, and, in their term, PACT (things we can do to prevent, advocate for, care for those who have it, and treat the disease).
This is an important read for all, but essential for those who have or know someone with Parkinson's Disease.
My husband was diagnosed of Parkinsons disease 2 years ago, when he was 49. He had a stooped posture, tremors, right arm does not move and also a pulsating feeling in his body. He was placed on Senemet for 8 months and then Sifrol was introduced and replaced the Senemet, during this time span he was also diagnosed with dementia. He started having hallucinations, lost touch with reality. Suspecting it was the medication I took him off the Siferol (with the doctor’s knowledge) and started him on PD-5 natural herbal formula we ordered from AKNNI HERBAL CENTRE, his symptoms totally declined over a 3 weeks use of the AKANNI HERBAL Parkinson's disease natural herbal formula. He is now almost 51 and doing very well, the disease is totally reversed! (Visit w w w.aknniherbscentre .com)
My wife has Parkinson’s disease, adding PD-5 to her nighttime Parkinson’s meds has completely changed her sleep issues. she slept all day and up all night, we had to hire care nurses. Now using this PD-5 medicine for the last six months and a normal routine she sleeps almost completely through the night and may get up once to use the restroom. It’s improved so much we were able to let go of the night nurses. This medicine also helps a ton with memory. we got the treatment from uinehealthcentre. com I am absolutely confident that this program offers a viable solution. I hope you find it helpful, and I wish you a full recovery!

You may be interested in this book if you have Parkinson’s or have a loved one or friend with the disease. My husband and brother-in-law both have Parkinson’s. Although the book was published in 2020 it is still relevant. The call for action remains critical. Paraquat, a commonly used pesticide linked to PD, is still used in the US although banned in many other countries. It is currently under a new review by the FDA. Every 7 minutes a new person is diagnosed with PD in the US. You are more likely to get PD than be on a traffic accident.

This book has four authors who combined to shed their thoughts on how Parkinson’s disease (which is the fastest growing neurological disease in the world) can be ended. It is noteworthy that the proceeds from the book go to Parkinson’s research. This book is helpful to those already diagnosed as well as to their families and caretakers. By following the guidelines many can be spared from the disease even if Parkinson’s is not totally eliminated.
