No one wants to be sent to Academie Metamorphose, the magical academy for delinquents.
No one but me.
I’ve purposely gotten kicked out of three prestigious academies. It’s taken two and a half years.
Finally, I’m about to get put into their reform program.
And I’m thrilled.
Not about the shit classes at this boarding school. Definitely not about the intense physical regimen.
I’m excited because this academy is the perfect recruiting grounds for what I need: a force, a detonator, and a tock with loose morals and an affinity for breaking the rules.
I need a powerful, heartless crew, because I’m about to pull off the magical heist of the century.
Author's Note: This is a medium burn reverse harem romance intended for adult audiences.
AHHHHH slow burn reverse harem in an academy setting with tons of magic?? YES!
I've read several of Ann Denton's books and I absolutely love her writing style. This book is super addictive, with hilarious dialogues and extremely hot males! It's amazing how each of the love interests in this story has an unique relationship dynamic with the female-lead. This was also the case with her Tangled Crown reverse harem fantasy series!
Hayley is after one thing and one thing only: to find a cure to save her brother from vampirism, a condition that transforms the person into a feral blood sucking monster. She is determined to recruit the the best of the best to aid her with her heist, even if that means having to do the unthinkable in order to join the Magical Academy for Delinquents, A.K.A, MAD.
The romance is a slow burn throughout the story, which only makes the build up more and more exciting for when the steam gets real! Zavier was my favorite from the beginning, with his flirty jokes and uplifting spirit. Gray quickly turned into a favorite also, their pranks were hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud while reading. I can't wait to see their relationship develop even further in the next book.
The ending was 😱😱, I hate Claudia with everything I have, Ann Denton truly knows how to write a despicable villain! Need to dive in to book 2 immediately to see what's going to happen!
This book has really high ratings, so I had some pretty high expectations, but frankly I was a bit disappointed. One of the problems is that this book is so long - it took a really long time for the story to really start and for Hayley to make it to the school for delinquents. That said, the first half of the book was interesting. Hayley seemed smart and like she had a plan. However, once she started putting her plan into motion by meeting the guys who she was targeting as recruits, she kind of fell apart and seemed dumb. She really didn't have much of a plan for making these guys agree to the plan except hoping that they thought she was hot. There is like, the tiniest bit of slow burn, which I liked, and then all of the sudden a switch flipped and the romance went WAY too fast. I was so disappointed by how quickly the romance escalated, how quickly the guys agreed to this plan, and how OK the guys were with all of them dating Hayley despite none of them being friends before this.
Anyways, the first half of the book was good and set up a bit like a great heist movie, but the second half of the book was slow and boring. The romance also was rushed too quickly once Hayley finally actually spoke to the guys. Z was the best character. The heist at the end was kind of interesting, but the book is 600+ pages, so I was just ready for it to be done. You also just knew that something was going to go wrong with the heist (it did), so I was constantly just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Overall, good-ish, but I don't think I'll read another book in this series. I just don't care that much about the characters. The world-building and magic system is interesting though.
I think I was talking myself into liking this one more than I really did. There were some pacing issues - the plot moved in fits and starts. There are also some continuity issues and plot holes that I found distracting. For example, Evan's backstory. Likewise, much of the premise behind this world doesn't seem to make much sense - why would people be so obsessed with becoming "unnatural" and willing to risk a spell that fails so often? Why hasn't the government regulated who gets to try this spell (such as needing to reach a certain spell level at minimum first) or how often it is attempted? The world itself was just confusing in terms of why this stuff was happening in the first place. Nevertheless, the overall idea felt different, and I did still find myself interested in the outcome - though some of that was hoping more explanation would be forthcoming.
I feel like some of the guys have not been fleshed out well - Malcolm, in particular, seemed to have most of his interactions off-page for the latter portion of the novel, so his character didn't really develop. I'm hoping they are personalized further in the next book.
Magical Academy for Delinquents was fun, sassy and entertaining. Both book and characters were full of life despite the hardships and the evolving chemistry between the whole crew was a delight to observe.
review to come later -maybe if I remember how to write one, anyway.
Got to 90% and realized there was no way it wasn't going to end on a major cliffhanger. The heist itself felt pretty rushed compared to the planning but I get the countdown and urgency. I liked how strong the FMC is and the guys. No one is left out, each has their role to play. Favourite character was Zavier, followed by Gray. Plenty of romance, creative sex, pranks, plotting, magic and evil waiting in the wings. So many parts made me laugh. Looking forward to the next one.
Enjoyed this one! Morally gray? Yes please. This reverse harem was more on the lighter side, which worked super well with me since I just started reading them, Ann has been my first RHs. I enjoyed the premise of the book along with the main character. Her sass was super entertaining! The side characters definitely added weight to the book. I loved the slow burn for sure! It was sexy and luring. The whole premise of the story kept me going… I love when it’s a fight for family and that’s exactly what Haley had, she needed to save her brother from a destiny that she just couldn’t handle. I won’t spoil it, but there are so many different magical Elements! This is perfect for lovers of all things magical and school vibes.
Huge thanks to the author for sending this my way! All opinions are my own ☺️
I loved this book so hard I basically read it all in a day. I knew having read books by this author before to expect a funny read but this one certainly got better as it went on. The hilarious pranks had me glad I had a vacation day and wasn’t reading this at work-that would have been hard to explain. I loved the heroine Hayley from the start. She’s a badass magical woman who takes no sh*t from anyone. When we first meet her, she’s doing her best to get kicked out of school in what will be the start of her plan that’s been two years in the making. Hayley lives and breathes with only the thought of saving her brother, who became a vampire after a spell went awry. The same week she lost her brother her father was killed, but given her abilities she’s still able to see him in ghost form. Hayleys mother has taken to drugs to get by and Hayley truly feels alone in the world. Part of her plan is befriending a few key members at the Academy of Delinquents whom can help in her grand plan of saving her brother from vampirism. This crew and her brothers BFF will all make up her harem and Hayley is all about embracing the free love concept she learns is accepted at the school. With betrayals around the corner, a backstabbing abusive stepfather and magical spells barring the way, even Hayleys two years of planning will come up against some walls. It’ll take them all working together to find the way anonymously. But damn, I was not expecting that cliffhanger at the end and I’m so eager to dive into the next book. I really enjoyed this book and it didn’t seem nearly as long as it was. There was no insta love really aside from maybe previous feelings shared between her and Evan, her bros BFF. Sexual tension 100% but the slow burn is real. At the end of this book Hayley has yet to still deflower one of her men 😘 On that note I really loved that Hayley had to get to know each guy and slowly introduce them to her plan. Between the slow going and the pranks between her and Grayson-I really enjoyed the book from start to finish. Hayley is an awesome headstrong heroine and I can’t wait to see how everything will work out for her and her men. Besides there’s someone who needs a serious ass-whooping and I am living waiting for that oh so sweet moment to happen!!! Definitely need to check out more by this author!
2.5 stars Hayley wants to steal a magical medicine from the corrupted Pinnacle(magic govt). She needs a crew to pull off that heist so she voluntarily goes to the magical academy of delinquents. There she finds her crew/Harem and proceeds for the heist. The book was fine until she got the guys and then it went downhill. There was more making out than planning for the heist of the century. The guys were all interesting and mysterious then Hayley happened to them. There are lot of plot holes I mean a girl that intelligent didn't figure out how her dad died?? Whatevs... The cliffhanger was totally unnecessary since it was expected ...
It’s official: Ann Denton writes some of the most entertaining books I’ve ever read. While academy settings aren’t always my favorites, MAGICAL ACADEMY FOR DELINQUENTS merges it with some things I simply cannot resist: magic, morally gray characters, a heist, and hot men. Add to that the Ocean’s Eleven vibes, and you get a book that was impossible to put down.
The plot was incredibly engaging and filled with twists, but what made this book shine were the characters, and the relationships between them. I loved Hayley as a protagonist. She had the clever, tactical genius of Danny Ocean with all the wit and snark of Rusty (yes, I’m still using Ocean’s Eleven references), and I loved seeing the very different evolution of her relationship with each of the boys in her team. Given that this is a reverse harem, I truly appreciate the time the author takes not only to develop each love interest, but how diversified the relationships are. Whether you love a comic-relief tattooed boy, an intense blond hottie, a prankster gangster or are weak in the knees for the brother’s-best-friend shifter mister (or all of the above), you’ll find something to love. I personally can’t even choose a favorite, but I will say that Evan (the shifter mister) probably ended up being the one I found most surprising! I’ve already read the Tangled Crowns series by Ann Denton, so while Magical Academy for Delinquents was a confirmation of how well she can develop a reverse harem for me, I firmly believe newbies to this dynamic could absolutely try it with this book and fall in love with it.
I will warn you: the book ends on a gasp-out-loud note, so you’re going to want to dive into the sequel right away. I know I did!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.
I thought this was a fun take on the magical academy trope! I really enjoyed the MC Hayley and thought the slow burn romance was great. Denton has such an easy to read writing style and she’s also really funny, which makes for a fabulous reading experience 😆
The cliffhanger at the end was def unexpected! So glad I was able to jump right in to book two.
Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5-4 stars. So I'm really loving the bad girl, genius feel of this FMC. While this book has the Academy thing going for it, it was mostly focused on magical pranks as well as the heist. I also really loved the heist element. The world building was great flowing really well and setting up the scenes pretty effortlessly. Also the magical concepts were explained well enough to grab the concept without any noticeable "dumping." I of course love love the raunchy humor of the pranks even though it seems like maybe the FMC doesn't come out on top during all that lol.
FMC, Haley, is portrayed less of a physical bad A, instead as a genius mastermind. Totally had me hooked. Haley makes her goals, covers every basis and then starts her plans to make them happen. I do feel like there was so much time, effort, and organization all up until the heist gets planned. At that point when Haley starts taking the guys opinions and plans into consideration I felt like everything started unraveling because of the rushed nature. While the author does explain the reason's for the "rush," it really started giving me anxiety as I felt we were biting off way more than we could chew and not really going into this fully prepped.
I realized pretty quickly that we weren't going to get our goals accomplished in book one for sure and there is a lot set up for after the heist. I would definitely like to see where this is headed.
Ann hits it out of the park again! Magical Academy for Delinquents, or MAD, is filled with gut busting humor, devious heist plots, and a medium burn romance with Hayley and her men. *Minor spoilers*
Hayley is planning the magical heist of the century: break into Pinnacle - basically the magical equivalent to Fort Knox - and steal the serum to cure her brother. She can’t do it alone, and her attempts to hire a professional fall flat. Enter MAD. The academy houses criminals of all kinds, exactly what she needs. Evan, Malcom, Grayson, and Zavier are the answer to her prayers.
Hayley is a spitfire, a jokester, and a woman on a mission. My favorite parts of the book are not only the prank wars she had with Grayson and her humorous banter with Zavier, but the forgiveness and growth she shows with Evan. I literally laughed out loud during most of the book! This is the first book in the series, and has a MAJOR cliffhanger that I definitely was not prepared for. I might’ve yelled at my kindle. The storyline is fantastic, the characters are hilarious and loving, and I just really enjoyed this book. It’s outside the normal with the heist/revenge aspect which was a breath of fresh air. Highly highly recommend!

Loved it!! This felt like Ocean's Eleven meets Darkmore Penitentiary. Our FMC, Hayley, has been working on getting herself kicked out of every magical school she has been sent to for two and a half years, in order to get sent to the Magical Academy for Delinquents. She's researched the students, and has her eyes set on two in particular to help her with the mission she's been outlining to save her brother. There's tension, lust, some open door scenes (these students are 18+), shifters, and magic derived from spell writing. You just know that this type of book ends on a cliffhanger, but lucky for me, this duology is complete so I can grab Delinquents Turned Fugitives right away.
I binged this book and stayed up way past my bedtime. Definitely worth it though!
Academy books are typically not my thing, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book, starting with our main character Hayley. She was so bad ass and Denton definitely captured the teenage craziness. Hayley is attempting to get into a notorious academy holding the toughest delinquents because she wants to save her brother. In order to do that, she needs help from a few of their students.
I loved each of the guys, but I have to say my favorite was Z! I loved the lovable, sarcastic goody guy and that is definitely what you get with him. I loved the soft moments between him and Hayley.
This book ends in a way that is going to make you dive into book 2 because you'll need answers! Cannot wait to see where this goes!
When I discovered Katie May I sort of automatically discovered Ann Denton too. They have a similar way of writing and storytelling and yet they have their own specific talents and focus. I've been reading quite a lot of Katie Mays, but less Ann Dentons and I don't know why. So, when I discovered that I had this book still on the shelves I all of a sudden really felt like reading it! And since I postponed my lunch to finish the book I think that was a good decision.
What I loved about this book is how we're thrown into the moment supreme. Our heroine is finally there. She's been finally kicked out of enough schools to get into the one she needs to go to find her crew for an impressive heist. Along the way we slowly discover who she's hoping to find there, what kind of talents they have and most of all why her heist is so important for her that she ruined her reputation and possibly even future for it.
The author does a great job when it comes to balancing all the different elements of the story. There is magic, there is romance, there is a bit of politics and there is of course the heartbreaking storyline of our heroine's brother. All those elements get the right amount of attention and I never felt like characters were wasting time on one thing when they should focus on another. I also loved that we saw how our heroine was planning and reading people.
And since she's so good at reading people we also get to know the guys in her life pretty well. Mostly trough observations from our heroine, but later on also because of stories they tell, feelings they show. I feel like there is much more to tell. Once our heroine reached the part of trusting her guys with her plan, the romance developed quite quickly, but considering how the book ends I don't doubt the next book will be exciting, challenging and emotional. I can't wait to read it!
Ann Denton is single-handedly making me fall in love with the reverse harem genre. This book has all the characteristics I love: an intriguing plot with an interesting magic system to go with it, a strong female protagonist, likable characters, and four swoon-worthy guys deserving of all my attention: Evan, the brother’s best friend and childhood crush; Malcolm, the intense and very intelligent anarchist; Grayson, her nemesis; and Zavier, the sassy thief. Basically, the kind of love interests I’m weak in the knees for. Hayley’s chemistry with all of them was amazing, and thank goodness I don’t have to choose a favorite. Especially when it comes down to Evan, Malcolm and Grayson.
Besides the romance, I really appreciated the core of the plot, which all hangs on Hayley’s love for her brother Matthew and her desire to save him—and thus, the heist element of the book, which was super fun! Sibling bonds are one of my favorite things to see in books and ironically, one of those things I don’t often see. Despite Matthew not being present, I felt like I got to know him through Hayley’s memories and her determination to help him. I hope we get to see him in the next book, because I think he has all the cards for being a favorite character. I also adored the academy setting!
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own!
I've just read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down and walk away! The story was intense, full of suspense and just whoa! Haley is a strong character, intelligent, focused and trying to save her brother. The one thing I really enjoyed from the story was the different way shifters and vamps are created in this magical world. It is one of the more unique twists I've read in some time and I liked it a lot. Anyway back to the story - it's a cross between Mission Impossible and Harry Potter and it just sucks you in to the point where you're not sure how you're going to go on without knowing what happens. The guys in Haley's crew are mostly morally ambiguous but they are good guys who all have something to prove. Sexy cause duh! but so much more...
That ending though...now that was just cruel! Fair warning it ends on a cliffhanger right after all of the heart pounding suspense I just had to endure. I literally kept trying to scroll because I thought "No! No way Ann Denton is just going to leave me on this kind of high!" But alas it was not to be - for fans of Ann Denton's Tangled Crowns series this shouldn't come as a surprise. That being said it is an amazing story and totally worth the suffering I promise.
This book was great. It was intense! I read it so fast I just had to know what was going to happen. And then it ended on a cliffhanger!! Aaagh! I need the next book like now.
This is a good book. It starts out with Haley the main character getting kicked out of the academy she is in (which is the 3rd she has been kicked out of total) she is trying to get into Academie Metamorphose which is the Magical Academy For Delinquents. She is a Darklight witch and that also gives her the ability to see ghosts!! She is trying to get into MAD to recruit criminals as crazy as her break into the Pinnacle. And let me tell you she finds her crew🔥 This book is definitely worth the read!!
I was gonna drop this book after 20% but the reviews were so positive that I decided to give it a shot. Well, what a waste of time. It was good for like 20% more or so, but after that was just too boring. Maybe this was my fault, High school romances/books are not my thing.
As many of you know, Academy books have flooded the market in the last year and they’re a bit played out at this point. I can assure you, that this is not the case with MAD. This isn’t your typical academy trope book (we’re not looking at a series that revolves around the academy schedule and is split into ‘semesters’ or ‘years’).
It does take place in an academy obviously, so we do have a lot of classroom setting scenes and some expected academy dynamics, but really this didn’t read as an ‘academy’ book. The drama doesn’t revolve around the academy institution, and we’re not looking at headmaster conflicts or any actual school related dramas.
The focus of this book is more on the heist and the setup for the heist (which is set off campus and has no link to academy itself). The world building and character development is excellent.
And if you don’t already know this, Ann Denton is really funny and her books all have an element of humor.
This book is a medium burn. It is planned to be a duet and ends on a cliff-hanger.
Such a great book! The author totally hit it out of the park with a bad girl with a good heart story. Loved the plot and characters- her mother broke my heart and I absolutely loved the prank wars with Grayson. You know Z has a heart of gold under that sharp wit and Malcolm.. well he’s a tough nut to crack. But Evan the bear of a stalker is the sweetest. I am on pins and needles to see what happens next!
Well what can I say. The banter within this book was good. From the light up panties to the pink Dildo. The story line was okay. The ending leaves you wanted to read more. Claude really needs to go and her mum needs help. I really hope they can save her brother. The only thing that I don't like is when she started the school the head said that the teachers fight back but no did. She didn't cause trouble for the teachers and the teachers didn't really fight with the pupils. I was hoping to see some banter between the two.
This was an incredibly funny book. I really like the female lead, who is determined to save her brother from a fate worse than death. She's an incredibly talented magic user and planned out which steps she needs to take in order to succeed. To do that, she needs some other talented people at her side, giving off an 'Ocean's Eleven' kind of vibe really, where she executes her plans. But the heroine also shows a more vulnerable side to her, making her more relatable and it makes me as a reader root for her even more.
