I read this as a devotional and I loved my time learning about Colossians! Joyce Meyer breaks it down in a practical, easy to understand manner. It’s uplifting and educational. I loved the in-depth educational piece but also the personal reflection aspect. Most devotionals are more surface level so I appreciated the educational aspect. Reading this as a devotional allowed me to dig deeper and I loved that, but it was also motivating. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

Well I started out flabbergasted. In this study, Joyce is using the NIV as her base Bible translation throughout. I’m not even sure of who this version of Joyce is....or if the publishers asked her to do it. At the core of everything I’ve known about her is her use of the Amplified Bible translation. My gosh, she has even published an edition in her own name. So I’m utterly shocked for her to not use it as the main translation, and it took me a minute to collect myself and continue the study.

It’s a very good study. In fact, it’s my favorite that she has put out so far. Colossians has only 4 chapters so it allows her to dive in way deeper, not only into Colossians but also into the epistles that speak on the same topics. Her depth is truly shown in the study far more than the others. And she does quite from the Amplified quite often (although I still don’t understand why she didn’t just use it all together).

I read more than one section at a time, but I do see how valuable it would be as a devotional, reading one section each day.

This was a great little study on Colossians. I listened to the audiobook from the library, but it would be a great one to have a paperback of so you can answer the reflection questions. Usually I find reflection questions in Bible studies somewhat forced or awkward, but the questions in this book were very good and a great way to set your mind on the things above first thing in the morning.

Colossians is my favorite book in the Bible. It contains my life verse. It has so much good teaching in it and Meyer does a good job of helping us comprehend all that's there. This book is a good introduction to the epistle and is very readable. It is not really a verse by verse exposition but rather emphasizes thoughts, sometimes one verse, some times an entire paragraph of Scripture. There is no exploration of the Greek.

In classic Meyer style, she emphasizes the lordship of Jesus, the dangers of Gnosticism, the importance of putting God first, how to live as a Christian in this world, who we are in Christ, the importance of our thoughts, and much more. My favorite section was the one on being “in Christ.” She even notes there is more information on this topic on her website.

Meyer reminds readers that God wants us to thrive in life. (John 10:10) That requires living by God's Word. We need to study the Bible and dig deep into its truth so it will transform us. This is a good book to lay a foundation for that deeper study.

This study on Colossians is divided into short chapters and would make a good daily devotional kind of reading. Meyer has added reflective questions from time to time but the style is not that of a workbook. I recommend it to lay people looking for a good devotional reading on Colossians.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

I always tread carefully when I read Bible studies. Personal biases and interpretations inevitably abound. Also, there are often times a stigma is attached to a writer or speaker based on their “branch of Christianity”. If God has shown me anything this year, it’s to rejoice in others’ love of him. Instead of judging their background and denomination, I choose to be happy in their desire to serve God and leave it up to Him to show us all where we need to change things in our lives.

I feel like I need to preface this review with my thoughts because we will so often “throw out the baby with the bath water” if someone isn’t worshiping God exactly as we are. As long as nothing conflicts with God’s Word, I will choose to rejoice in their love of God. (1 Thessalonians is a really great book that deals with this idea).

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through these verse-by-verse commentaries/devotionals. Joyce Meyer knows the Bible well and understands suffering and perseverance. Her background is so dark and God’s mercy is evident in her change.

These are a great companion to the Word. They are simple and straightforward to read and I would recommend picking one up each morning and having some time with God! As always, I recommend reading the Word on your own, as well as using other resources and materials. It’s good to hear what God has revealed to others and, ultimately, take it all and ask Him for wisdom on what to do with it.

Thanks, Hachette Books for these! As always, this is my honest review. Here’s to many more!!

Great for someone new to studying the Bible. Those who’ve been studying longer are likely to find it lacking the depth of study they’re looking for.

Colossians: A Biblical Study by Joyce Meyer

2 stars

This is a Bible Study about the book of Colossians. I don’t have much to say about this Bible study because it was pretty subpar. It was your typical American Christian Bible Study and it started out offering context at the very beginning (which I was so excited about) and then it became more about how you can do all these things to be a better Christian by doing __ and __. It’s just not what I was looking for. I want more from Bible studies. I want Biblical and historical context; I want theological studies and deep questions. I wouldn’t even do this study in a Bible study because it doesn’t ask any in-depth questions. This study lacks the theological depth that I am looking for. My best friend also read the Galatians study Meyer’s did and she had a lot of the same issues that I did with the Colossians one. I think this would interest people who are avid fans of Meyer’s teaching or who lack a history in theological reading and read the Bible more for personal application (which is dangerous, but I recognize many do this because they lack resources in churches and among friends to have good discipleship programs). I’m not trying to sound so negative, but I guess I’m just weary about recommending this study. I think if you feel the leading of the Holy Spirit to read it, then He must be trying to tell you something or leading you to a particular Scripture or thought, but besides that you can pass on this one and find better theological commentators.

Colossians by Joyce Meyer is perfect for anyone who wants to study Colossians. Whether the reader is new to the book or has read and studied it several times like I have, the reader will get so much out of it.

I enjoyed that Meyer’s book starts off with an introduction about the book of Colossians to give some background knowledge. I find it helps develop a better understanding of what the reader is about to dive into. It helps the reader unpack more throughout the book.

This book also has some majour highlights that if you wanted to just read a sentence or two you could get the highlight for the day, or there is plenty that Meyer’s unpacks verse by verse. It really allows your mind to be still and focus on a little piece of truth for the day.

Lastly, the book features a little section to write down your thoughts along with a question to get you started.

I have written devotionals for Colossians, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is one I will return to time and time again. And like the book of Colossians, I am sure I will learn something new every time.

My only comment is that I wish this came in a paperback edition. I really do not enjoy hard back books for Bible Study. I know this is a personal preference and in no way influences my rating of the overall book.

I received an electronic Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Faith Words through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.

Joyce Meyer's new Biblical study book, Colossians, is both a practical, helpful Bible study with beautiful design.

Colossians starts with both an introduction on how to read the book and an introduction telling about the book of Colossians. Meyer then offers 14 chapters full of information from the book of Colossians written to help you keep your faith and God and live a better Christian life. She says that the first chapter of Colossians alone includes twelve different lessons to incorporate in to your life. She encourages readers to go through the book slowly, read the Scriptures and reflect and to try to slowly live out the lessons that you are learning.

I like that Meyer writes in such a way that I can easily read and understand what she is saying to better learn how to apply the lessons from Colossians to my life. It is definitely a book that you will want to take your time reading and working through. I like how nicely this series is put together in that they are well-bound books about the size of many Bibles in dimensions. I also like that each chapter has a place for personal reflections. I do still struggle to write in these beautiful books but I find it easy to use the questions and write in a journal.

I have always enjoyed Joyce Meyer's straightforward approach. In typical Joyce fashion this study has the common theme throughout to put God first and be who He created you to be with all the tools He's given you. Why settle for anything less?

This study of Colossians is a good & general intro to the general themes and purpose of the letter. I was expecting more of an in-depth study (Examining the greek, verse-by-verse, etc.) But it simply isn't that. It is however very easy to read and could easily be read as a daily devotional. So I did really enjoy it once I was able to put it into a different context. This could also easily be read in book clubs/small groups and the topics in the study and Colossians could be discussed in greater depth in a group setting.

I was given an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Joyce Meyer has written a brand-new Biblical study on the book of Colossians. It was written by Paul while he was in prison and he wrote it in a style of a letter to the Colossians. In this book, he discussed the importance of putting God first in your life. Joyce shared how the first chapter of the book contains 12 keys on how we can grow spiritually. These included living in the will of God, being thankful, living in faith, holding on to hope, rejoicing in suffering, and how we have everything we need in Christ, and much more. In the book, she explained to readers on how they can find out if they are living in the will of God and the difficult people facing in figuring out what they are called to do. One of the critical points she makes is that people need to be courageous and they need to step out and try and not to live in fear. And if they realize that they aren’t living in the will of God, then they can take a step back and try something else. She explained her own past with trying the church’s nursery, street evangelism, and a secretary to her pastor. She didn’t find her true fulfillment and calling until she began to teach people God’s Word. Another key area, she looked at was when Paul recommended the power of thanksgiving and how we need to thank God when we pray. We always need to be thanking God for everything He has given to us.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is looking for a new study book. I immensely enjoyed how in-depth Joyce Meyer went into the book of Colossians. She explained the scope of each chapter broken down until everyday language where readers can understand. I also liked how she included other verses from the Bible to explore the topics of Colossians in the greater focus of the Bible. I love how she also went into details about exploring the image of God and how we have been saved from the darkness. One of my favorite chapters was the one on knowing who you are in Christ and she broke down scriptures for us to medicate on. These topics included, being strengthen in Christ, being rescued from darkness and evil forces, being thankful, being complete in Him, being chosen in Christ. I truly believe if believers would study and speak life over their lives and they would see their lives improve and change. This book has the potential to greatly influence and help readers to grow in their relationship with Christ.

Much like the Galatians Bible study, it has the same aspects and format. When you open up the pages for this book, the author tells you that you should take time going through this book and not just skim over it. There are scripture references throughout that will be noted to help you understand the content of Colossians. She also asks questions after each section that you are able to reflect on while you are reading. She gives you plenty of space to write out your thoughts and answers in the book as well. But like I said before, if you don’t want to write in the book you should get a notebook of some kind. She does note that this book, Colossians, was also written by the Apostle Paul.

What I love most about this book is that the author tells us to take our time with these books. We should let it sit and think about what we have read. She ends each book with asking this question: Do you have a real relationship with Jesus? This is one of the many things I love about Joyce Meyer. She is always reminding us as we go through her books that we can have a real relationship with Jesus. She takes all of the lessons from the Bible and helps you apply it to your daily life. It is very easy to understand through her words what God is teaching us in these books of the Bible. I highly recommend these books if you are looking for more information on what these books of the Bible mean and how you can apply it to your life.

The publisher offered me a free copy of this book for review purposes and I decided to give it a shot. I've always found Ms. Meyer's no-nonsense approach to the Word of God refreshing and that certainly comes through here. She breaks the book down passage by passage and gives great insights to their meaning.

As an example, when commenting on Colossians 2:2 and 3 "2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Ms. Meyer keys in on the wisdom and knowledge hidden in Christ at one point and says, "Whenever you need wisdom in a situation or any time you need to know something, the answer is 'hidden' in Christ. It is not hidden because God does not want you to find it; it is hidden because God wants you to seek it." Her comments are full of the plain-spoken wisdom I have come to both expect and appreciate.

I would not go so far as to call it a commentary, but there is clearly a fair amount of research happening here, as she references other texts, the Greek, etc. As a text for a church Bible study, this book would be a great guide. The book is a quick read at 180 pages but I really do feel I came away with a better understanding of Colossians. This could be a very useful resource. Check it out.

"Colossians" is a Bible commentary on Colossians that can be used for personal Bible study or even as a devotional. The author provided the Bible verses in the book (often using an amplified version). She covered several verses at a time and worked her way through Colossians. She talked about each group of verses and brought out insights to improve our understanding. She stayed focused on the verses rather than telling funny stories, but it wasn't highly academic or difficult to follow. It's written at a layman's level and contained short enough sections that it could be used for daily devotional reading. She included questions for personal reflection along with space to write in your answer. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to better understand Colossians.

Apostle Paul wrote a letter to Colossians that spoke about learning to act like God. If they read the letters, they would understand the things they needed to do to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Joyce Meyer wrote about the Colossians, and she breaks down each piece step-by-step. She teaches how to understand the Colossians, and how it applies to us individually and in our every day lives. If we follow the steps, then we will have right thoughts and have right actions. This is an excellent teaching/learning tool that outlines what Christian looks like, and how they should act. It delves deeper into a part of the bible. It's very easy to follow, and has guidelines that will help us understand Colossians better. This is a great book for beginners, and people that want a closer relationship with God.

Paul's letter to the Colossians is one of the most loved epistles! The lessons of faith are rich and life-changing. My life verse is the tenth scripture in chapter one!
Joyce's study does the following: assures us we are rescued from darkness and forgiven of our sins; that we can live in right relationship with God through Jesus Christ; and that we can enjoy our life, stay strong in faith, every single day.
Joyce takes a "deep dive" identifying truths and showing us how to incorporate those into our daily lives.
Highly recommend for those longing to go deeper.

As with all of Meyer’s Bible Studies I found this to be a very helpful tool. It allowed me to dive deeper when reading and studying about the church of Colossae, in particular, its historical and cultural background.

While the book of Colossians is rather short (like most epistles) there is lots of wisdom to be gained. I took copious notes that I will be able to refer to in the future. I found the passages where she explained Gnosticism to be especially eye- opening.

This is a five star study. One I highly recommend for every believer, new or old. I look forward to doing more of them!!!!

I rarely engage in Joyce Meyer Bible studies, however I found this to be really engaging. It was balanced and truthful. Joyce pointed to Jesus in ways that were stretching and illuminating. Her voice came through as bold, authentic and humble.

I would encourage anyone wanting to dive deeper into the Word of God to try this study!

new learners, amazing book

I have two favorites parts about this book;
1- Colossians 2:3b are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
*they are hidden because god wants us to seek for them
And,
2- when she explains about the peace that God already gave us, so we don’t have to ask for, but we have we can simply be thankful for him giving us the grace to walk in peace.
Those things for me was a blowing mind.

Meyer points out some interesting details about the letter Paul wrote to the church of Colossae. She actually had me looking at the letter from an angle I previously hadn't consider. Overall, I was intrigued and feel like I learned quite a bit from the perspective of this book. I will probably read more from her Biblical Study Series.
