Rescue never looked so dangerous. Lucky and crew think the worst is behind them when a ship finally arrives to whisk them away from a doomed diplomatic mission.
It doesn't take long to learn how wrong they are.
Before they know it, a seemingly vanquished foe returns more powerful, and with more resources, than ever.
But it's the source of this new power that proves more disturbing than anything else.
As time runs out, and the stakes rise to inconceivable levels, Lucky realizes that even if he wins, everybody loses.
Don't ask Lucky. Just give him a weapon and get out of the way.
Gritty. Fast-Paced. Addictive. You'll love this high-octane military sci-fi because it's the love child of "Starship Troopers" and "Jason Bourne."
The relentless pacing, well-developed main characters, and plethora of bombshell plot twists toward the end make this a unique and thrilling tale. This book is the perfect combination of elements to make a captivating and engaging experience. With a witty and fun dialogue, the humour lightens up the exuberant and terrifying scenes. Lucky and his loyal team are indeed lucky! Discovering shocking truths about the emperor is stretching them to the limits. It has been an exciting and exhilarating read, with no respite for the characters nor the readers!
The series meanders, seaming aimlessly, through a predictable series of set pieces. We find ourselves chasing after the latest big bad, but cannot escape the sense of deja vue. So lacking in ideas the author makes the mistake of leaning into a little more ‘science’ only to demonstrate why steering clear has been a much better strategy. Honestly, it’s frustrating how few science authors take the time to understand the most basic fundamentals of physics…
It was actually kind of nice having a break from April’s paranoid, twisty shenanigans in the last book, because they can get twisted indeed, and sometimes I legit have trouble following them. But it’s also brought back very well in this volume. Her secrets and schemes made more sense to me than usual. We’re also getting to see April change a bit, which, given her extreme change in power and position, makes perfect sense.
Anna gets her due in this volume. She was mostly a royal pain-in-the-ass to be rescued last time. This time she’s developing a somewhat more complex (less naïve) morality, and she’s showing that she isn’t just a distressed damsel. Again, given the extreme change in her circumstances, this is entirely believable!
Something wacky is going on with Crad involving the Hate, which is turning Lucky’s world upside down. Crad has also hinted that he knows a secret or two that Lucky will want to know about. Lucky’s background has seemed set for a little while now, so the hint that there’s something more going on is potentially very interesting!
As usual, I’m giving you a content note for gore and hyper-violence. There’s a ton of action in here, and it gets quite imaginative and exciting.
I love these books, and can’t wait for the next one!
When is rescue from a doomed mission not really a rescue? When you are with Lucky.
This is book eight in the series, so there is a lot that has come before this. Fortunately, all the essentials are covered here, so feel free to jump in here. Just be aware you will want to go back and read the rest afterwards just because you will want more.
This is high octane military SF at its best. We get lots of action, a good bit of intrigue and some nice, dry humor to keep it real. The setting is well detailed with lots of interesting races and conflicts. The characters are also well developed and live an breath in this setting. Put that together with solid writing that keeps you engaged throughout the story and you have an excellent weekend read.
Actually, it's been a lot of blasts. There is rarely a dull moment in this book, or this series, and when there is, you can be sure that someone or something will liven things up. Rocky is still my favorite character, and I really like Hector too. Don't get too attached to any of the characters. There are quite a few used as cannon fodder by the author. Just saying. The ending makes me think there will be more Lucky stories to look forward to, and I do. I hope those of you who enjoy good space opera will give this series a chance. Note: Mature language, innuendo, and extreme violence.
I'm writing this because Joshua asked me too. I don't read reviews about books I want to read, I don't care what anybody else thinks. I read the first book and if I like I keep reading and I love this series. I'm about to start Lucky at Last, I know I'll be sad that it's the last and then I'll hope for more Lucky.
Usual bad grammar and spelling, shockingly bad continuity, Anna becoming April then reverting to Anna.other characters switching gender just totally sloppy. If the author had spent more time on r writing and less on trying to extend the series, it could have been better
As usual he leaves me wondering what is happening next. I love the story line and can't stand that the story has to stop while we wonder who I doing what and............
Great series and a great read can't wait for the next one in series
Picked up the first book 2 weeks ago and read all of them now good world building and character building parts of which could do with a polish but in all a great series
Hector is back, but only as a minor character in this book. April and a clone are doing things again, Dabs is flying and fighting, Anna is being queenly, and Lucky is Lucky. This series is good, and I'll keep reading.
This novel is full of all the action and intrigue you can ever want. The world building is awesome and you can almost feel the tension as the main characters struggle against an almost invincible foe. I think that readers of all ages will really enjoy this Space Opera!
have had great fun with this series...I am a diehard sand in your spacesuit, Asimov, Clarke, Hamilton etc fan but I care for these space opera protagonists
I enjoyed it even though I did not want to read this week. All I wanted was to know what lucky and his band where up to and where. I recommend you give it a go.
All nine books were great, from the first moment they were hard to put down for a moment. Very well written that captured your attention and kept it going forward..
