When I saw this book offered up on Netgalley, I knew I needed to take a chance on it. I've wanted to learn how to draw for quite some time. The Chibi style is one of my favorite styles. I LOVE anything chibi, so I figured this one would be great to help me explore if this is a style I would enjoy drawing in.

The book itself is outlined well, but I do wish it had more instructions. The body instructions were helpful, but I would have loved to have more detailed instructions on drawing the outfits & expressions. I felt like there was a disservice to readers by showing the types of outfits & not how to draw the outfit. The same can be said with the eyes. I found that I struggled a lot with drawing the eyes. A detailed how-to would have been extremely helpful.

All in all, this book helped learn some of the basics of drawing Chibi style characters & critters. I would have loved to have more instructions on the outfits & expressions, but I did find it useful.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

You Can Draw Manga Chibi Characters, Critters & Scenes is a tutorial style book for manga chibi characters, animals, and scenes. Due out 3rd March 2020 from Quarto on their Walter Foster Jr imprint, it's 96 pages and will be available in paperback format.
I love to draw and doodle. Despite not being super advanced and skillful yet, I find drawing very relaxing most of the time. This is an accessible guide full of techniques and cheerful upbeat advice. The drawing style itself is completely adorable (chibi ちび translates to 'little'). They're big eyed and round faced with tiny hands.

This guide has an accessible and appealing format. A short introduction is followed by tools and supplies, basic techniques, some color theory, and then the individual drawing tutorials. The authors do a good job of explaining (and showing) proportions for different ages, positions, action and movement, etc. The authors have also included a number of templates at the end of the book which can be photocopied and used to improve consistency in drawing and proportion.

Great selection for a gift for a young artist, perhaps with some added sketch pads and pencils. This would also make a superlative classroom or library book.I would also recommend this book to babysitters, grandparents, parents, and basically anyone who spends a fair bit of time with small kids in order to up their 'draw with me' game. I really enjoyed this. I will use these to decorate journals and notes for friends. I see some chibi style science stuff in my future (chibi microscope, chibi lab, chibi test tubes)!

Four stars. Fun collection.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I requested and received an advanced reading copy of this book from NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I would not call this a step-by-step guide for learning to draw manga chibi characters, as most drawings only had a few steps. Even though it was not step-by-step, I did find this book helpful. I like the explanation of “what makes it a chibi”, they are basic instructions, but it gives you a good idea of how to turn any character into a chibi.

I really like the templates provided at the back of the book; you can photocopy them and practice adding facial expressions and completing the images. It also gives you the opportunity to practice drawing the basic shapes using a light box and tracing. I think with a lot of practice (my skill level is pretty low) this book would enable me to draw chibi characters.

At the same time I got this book, I got another by the authors (You Can Daw Manga Chibis). I would rate them both 4 stars but this one is more like 4 1/2 stars while the other book is a low 4.

This book is far more useful as it contains the basic info in that other book + info for chibi animals too. Neither is what I would call step by step, as the projects tend to have 2-4 steps for the whole figures and those tend to be the only things in the book with step-by-step instructions. Most of the figures and additions items have a sentence explaining the basics. It definitely helps to have some basic drawing skill before tacking this one. There are a lot of templates for assisting you with the figure shapes. Everything in the book is super cute!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm such a bad artist, I had trouble even drawing the head of the Chibi character, leading me to get frustrated with myself. However, I believe that someone with patience and passion for drawing could really benefit from this book because the steps to drawing each character are simple, easy, and clearly outlined in this book.

I loved the way this book provided instructions and illustrations to follow.
This is not a step by step guide, but if you are already drawing the characters, it can help.
I am not an artist, but love to draw.
This book helped me improve my facial expressions and the symmetry of the characters.
I gave it 4 stars because it may be hard to follow for younger children, or someone not already drawing the characters.

Cute enough but I felt it was mostly the same as “You Can Draw Manga Chibis” and might have even reused a character or two?? If you have one you probably don’t need both. (I got these in a set of drawing books as a digital download.) it does go into slightly more detail about putting your characters into a space and then of course the animals are new. This book felt a /little/ bit more advanced than ycdmc.

Anyway if you liked ycdmc you’re bound to like this one too, and vice versa.

While I'm not sure you can really call this step by step, it is a delightful, fun, entertaining way to pass time and learn to draw Chibi!! I love Chibi and everything to do with chibi. This goes beyond just chibi characters which is really nice and includes furniture, pets, clothing, props, scenes, and templates so you can make your own chibi. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was an easy to use and read book about drawing some very cute critters. My 9 year old and 15 year old had a fun time doing these step by step drawings. And of course with practice you can even make them your own! Great for the beginner and moderate drawler

I enjoyed this one I have looked at and tried to follow a lot of different art books before none were as easy to follow as this one. I love how all of the different components are broken down and shown even the different emotions. The beginning of the book also goes over some materials and drawing basics which I think is very useful. I can’t wait to draw more of these cute chibi characters and settings.
