The book I read to research this post was Brilliant Positive Psychology by Charlotte Style which is a very good book which I read at http://safaribooksonline.com I did review a similiar book recently called Brilliant Positive Thinking and both books cover a lot of common ground. Both books said that it's not about being positive continously but bouncing back from being sad. Sadness helps us appreciate happiness and something interesting is that positive people allow themselves to be sad without fighting it and accept it for what it is. An exercise in the book is to list your charasterics or strengths in descending order and work on the ones near the bottom of the list. If being brave is near the top of your list what about working on being kind and selfless. One lady listed bravery near the bottom of her list and in particularly hated her journey back from her workplace. She decided to try and find something to occupy her whilst travelling and now looks forward to it. There was a story in the book about 2 boys aged 10 & 11 who did a horrible random attack on 2 boys aged 9 & 11. They hit them with bricks and forced them to sexually assault one another. They both got imprisoned for a minimum of 5 years. It turned they had terrible parents. The father used to beat up the mother and children. They were allowed to watch pornography and smoked tobacco and cannabis. They also were persistently in trouble for anti social offenses. The social workers dealing with them were hopeless and in particular didn't ask the right questions and didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. For some people going to prison is almost a blessing which I think it probably was in their case. In another book I read about a man who committed loads of rapes and murders and he went to prison. It turned out he had been persistently sexually abused and going to prison was almost a relief and he became a model prisoner. I did really enjoy this book and it's an interesting subject.
