The outrageous story of three best friends, one greedy mayor and a whole lot of pranking.
Green Peas is our name and pranking's our game!
A symphony of alarm clocks at assembly? Yep, that was us. A plague of fluffy guinea pigs? It's next on our agenda.
But for me, Cookie and Zeke, it’s about more than just fun. We're determined to make a difference. And when the adults won’t listen, us kids will find a way to be heard – as long as we can stay out of detention!
No activist is too small, no prank too big... and things are about to get personal.
Nat Amoore continues to impress in her second novel, with plenty of references and jokes to old movies and songs that I appreciate hehe. What stands out is the positive message of social activism and giving kids a voice when the adults' voices seem much louder. I also appreciate seeing an Asian-Australian being the cover star, there are some nice nods to Casey's Singaporean heritage, led by her adorable Grandpa and their enduring relationship. Young readers will definitely take notice of Casey for sure!
What an incredibly well-written story filled with many powerful messages. It presents crucial information in a entertaining way to allow young readers to understand and embrace them. Super fun to read.
Casey loves her family, her friends and positive pranking. She also loves her town and when the Mayor gets up to dodgy politics Casey and the Green Peas are onto it.
A fun read about the power of individuals, the risks of being outspoken and the consequences of taking a stand about something you believe in.
Recommended for 10+ The themes warrant discussion.
Ma isegi ei imestaks, kui ühel heal päeval leiduks seal film "The Power of Positive Pranking" ;)
This middle grade book is a lot of fun and brings out the prankster but it also discusses some very serious issues.
Casey Wu pranks but in a positive manner. Her group, the Green Peas, is interested in promoting important causes and fighting for what they believe in. But as kids aren't often listened to through the normal channels, they use pranks to get themselves heard.
Some of the pranks are quite ingenious (I liked the one where they mixed up the letters in the message all the schoolkids were holding).
Zeke the ninja is a really funny member of the cast. Casey's Mum's notes are thoughtful and touching.
Casey's team is her friends but she's highly influenced by adults: Mainly her dead mother who was an activist and as she did not know her Mum well, she relies on an idealised version of her to motivate her. She also relies on note cards her mother left her. Her deaf grandfather encourages her pranks and activism. However she's disappointed in her father who doesn't seem to be as enthused by her work and wants her to play more by the rules.
There is some nice diversity rep with the Singaporean culture and deaf culture, and there are also issues of how Casey handles her mother's death.
Casey's dad makes the case that he cares for her but his kind of caring is to work hard and to put food on the table. He used to be more of an activist but things have become different. This was an important point and I suppose if anything I would have liked the book to have done differently, I would have liked it to accept that we don't have to all be activists to care, rather than to have the message that we need to be fixed/changed so we can be more like Casey. But it was a fun story anyway.
"Heade vempude jõud" on taas üks nauditav lugemiselamus lastekirjanduse vallast.
While I purchased this book for my 9-year-old son, I couldn’t help but read it myself. After all, the title was just too tempting!
I fell in love with the characters, and have a soft spot for Zeke, with his “secret ninja” skills. I especially enjoyed the 80s references, and the book had this wonderful, nostalgic atmosphere to it, which reminded me of books I loved reading as a child.
There are great moral lessons in this book, and it touches on serious issues very well, but overall it’s a really fun, well-written read.
The Power of Positive Pranking fizzes with funny moments, action, intrigue, friendships more solid than concrete and enough nefarious behaviour to amuse and bemuse well into ‘lights out’ time. Once again, Amoore’s ability to suffuse laugh-out-loud scenarios with emotionally laden tenderness is something I’d shout out from a megaphone.
nüüd ma tahan lugeda ka esimest osa, sest mul on vaja teada saada, mismoodi lapsed terve pärismaja jagu legosid kokku said.
5 stars! I don't go handing out a 5 star rating unless certain criteria was filled: well wriiten, engaging, characters I care about and has to have changed me in some way - you know...powerful books.
I read this with my 10 & 6 year old, they loved it, giggled often, always asked for the next chapter straight away, learned new words and best of all were inspired by this book. This story changed us all for the better.
A light-hearted look at a group of friends who want to combat the effects of climate change in their own home town. Full of great environmental content, children will laugh and cheer as Casey and her team of activists calling themselves Green Peas prank their way into people's hearts. A layered book with complex issues such as parent loss and political agendas, the message gets right to the heart of the reader and will find you cheering too!
My daughter totally loves this book. She reads out parts she liked and tickled her fancy, we both laughed. Geniusly written by an author who knows her audience and captivates her willing captives to the point they read while walking into objects which had no business moving into the readers path. The humour used by Nat Amoore just hits the right notes. The dialogue adds another layer of brilliance where you can of step back and appreciate a story we'll crafted.
Hilarious and forward thinking this novel follows Casey Wu and her two mates, who form the ‘Green Peas’ and have adventures as child environmental activists. Enthralling and progressive, with discussions on environmental sustainability and access for the differently abled, it is also an excellent vocabulary builder! I got this for Miss 7 for Christmas and we read a chapter or two together each week. It was a good time.
Nat Amoore does it again! I thoroughly enjoyed this well-paced romp. The lively plot was engaging, and the characters were likeable. How cool to see some of our friends from The Schoolyard Millionaire as well! And wrapped up in there were very positive messages for kids about the important things in life.
This is another great book for middle graders from this Australian author. Once again, it was right on target for my eight year old granddaughter. The book kept us engaged, provoked discussion, was humorous and had great lessons in the story. We read the author's first book. Please write another one soon.
What a powerful book. A wonderful blend of fun and positive action with friends who long to make a difference. Children will enjoy the affirming message that you can make a difference and your voice deserves to be heard. Plus a little pranking doesn’t hurt anyone!
Lots of fun, my 7 y o loved it and was keen to keep reading. We marked it down a point for a bit of excessive sentimentality. Great, fun book for 6-9 year olds with a nice message about never being too young to make a difference.
I read this with my daughters and we really enjoyed it. According to my daughters it was funny and exciting. It is brimming with positive messages about how young people can make a difference to issues that they care deeply about. A very clever book.
A super fun read with a cast of wonderfully vibrant characters, a zippy storyline and some strong messages that will prompt some great discussion. Can’t wait to share this one with the students!
A cool cast of characters, timely themes around climate change and activism, diversity, humour and voice. Sooo much going on (a little like its author!).
Laughing out loud and lots of smiles. Kids 8-12 will love this adventure and so many themes to delve in to e.g activism, standing up for what you believe in, being yourself
I loved this book...it zings along with a pacey story and fun characters, while also dealing with themes of activism and climate change. Plus, pranking!
