A Jazzi Zanders Mystery #4

The Body in the Apartment

Rate this book
The charming homes of River Bluffs, Indiana, make perfect projects for house-flipper Jazzi Zanders. Less charming is her hothead brother-in-law, who's a bit of a fixer-upper himself.
But could he also be a murderer?

Jazzi married her gorgeous contractor Ansel—not his family. But somehow she keeps living with them. So she's delighted to help Ansel's brother Radley move out of their home and into his own place, in the same building as his work supervisor, Donovan. But when Donovan is shot and his apartment ransacked following an argument with Ansel and Radley's older brother Bain, their sibling becomes a suspect—especially after his missing gun turns up as the murder weapon.

Told not to leave town by Detective Gaff, big brother moves in with . . . Jazzi and Ansel. Now Jazzi needs to prove Bain's no killer, not only to keep him out of jail—but to get him out of their house. What was the killer looking for in Donovan's apartment? And what will happen to the next person who gets in the way?

The Body in the Apartment is the fourth installment in the Jazzie Zanders Mystery series.

Jazzie and her husband, Ansel, are helping his brother Radley move out of their home and into his new apartment. But when Ansel and Radley's older brother, Bain, shows up and tries to convince Radley to come back home to work on the family farm, it puts a damper on what should have been a great day. While the men are moving furniture into the apartment, Radley's boss is shot to death with Bain's missing gun and his apartment is ransacked. Told not to leave town by the detective, Jazzie and Ansel have no choice but to let Bain and his grumpy attitude, stay with them until he's eliminated as a suspect.

I found this book to be an enjoyable and relaxing read. The story moves at a good pace, and the cast of characters are fleshed out. Jazzie is likable, intelligent, dedicated to her friends and family and passionate about her job. It was refreshing to see a heroine not putting herself in dangerous situations and is content to let the police handle the investigation. The murder mystery was interesting but had little to no suspense leading up to the reveal, and the culprit was not a surprise. I found it very unrealistic that a detective would take a civilian to question witnesses and that he would be so reliant on her for help.
Overall, this is a lighthearted and fun cozy mystery, with delicious-sounding food, heartwarming family relationships, and plenty of romance. I will not hesitate to read future installments in this series.

I received an ARC from Kensington Books through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in the review are completely my own.

The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn is the fourth book in the cozy A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book can be read by themselves or in any order as each contains it’s own mystery that is fully solved within. However, there will be some character development carrying over from book to book for those that follow the series from the beginning .

The first book of the series, The Body in the Attic, introduced readers to Jazzi Zanders who along with her cousin Jerod are in the flipping houses business in River Bluffs, Indiana. Now if anyone isn’t familiar with house flipping it’s buying up properties at a low cost then renovating them to sell for profit. I blame plenty of doctor/hospital trips for my new found love of HGTV and these type of shows since they seem to air in waiting rooms everywhere.

This time around Jazzi and her contractor Ansel have gotten married and with that comes Ansel’s family and his brother, Radley, who has been living with them. Now it’s time for Radley to move but just as that is about to happen Radley’s supervisor, Donovan, is found shot and his apartment completely torn apart as if someone was looking for something so Jazzi knows there’s another murderer on the loose.

The A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series is another cozy series that I have followed from the beginning with two factors bringing back time and again, the series is set in my home state and I do love the home renovation theme. This installment seemed to focus more on cooking that building though which was a little odd from my memory of the first three but it was nice to hear of locations I know first hand again. Overall I still enjoyed the characters and mystery and will certainly return to the series with this latest coming in at three and a half stars for me.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

This is the fourth book in the Jazzi Zanders mystery series by Judi Lynn. Ansel's brother Radley has decided to stay in town, and Jazzi and Ansel help him move into his new apartment. During the move, Ansel and Radley's brother Bain shows up to try and convince Radley to return to the family's dairy farm. Unfortunately, Radley's friend Donovan, who lives in the same apartment complex, is killed while everyone is there. Bain becomes a suspect. Jazzi helps solve the murder.

I've read the previous three books in this series and recommend reading them in order: The Body in the Attic, The Body in the Wetlands, and The Body in the Gravel. They can be read out of order though. The personal stories are continued, but the mystery is standalone for each book.

Jazzi, Ansel, and her cousin Jerod flip houses. I enjoy the idea of a house flipper amateur sleuth, so this cozy series is a good one for me. Jazzi also likes to cook and enjoys hosting meals for her family and friends. She seemed to cook more in this book, and there are a few recipes included at the end of the book. I'm still perplexed why the detective on the cases always includes Jazzi in the investigation, even bringing her to interviews. Still, it's a fun and entertaining series.

A light, cozy mystery. Likable characters and a good mystery.

I received a free digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Murders, beatings, ex-c0ns and flipping homes mixed with large family and friend dinners, family problems and an upcoming wedding makes for an interesting combination. There are a lot of characters with some that you'll like, some that you won't and some that you might learn to like. However, in the end it all comes together nicely for an enjoyable read.

Jazzie Zanders and her husband, Ansel, are finally getting the house back to themselves as his brother, Radley, is moving to an apartment. His other brother, Bain, arrives intent to taking him back to the farm, ending up under suspicion of murder when his gun is stolen and a friend of Radley's is shot. Jazzie, her husband and cousin renovate and flip houses, so the background to the stories is working on the house, cooking delicious recipes and family. I love how this series bases the story in the characters actually living an everyday life and underscoring the importance and love of family. Jazzie is an intelligent heroine who does not take unnecessary risks to move the plot along. She used her wits to gain information and pass it along to the police. The mystery itself is well plotted and engaging. While I have only read the last two books (out of four), this series has become one of my must read series. Lighthearted in tone and fun to read. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't know why I love these books more...the fact they are about a team of house-flippers and that work fascinates me, or the fact that the books are so skillfully written that you never ask yourself "why are these people involved in the investigation?" My biggest pet peeve with cozies is when the main character sticks herself in the middle of an investigation and has no business doing so. That never happens with this series, and I so appreciate that! This was a great mystery with a lot of suspects and several red herrings. I couldn't put this down once I started it. Can't wait for the next one!

After several months of Ansel's brother Radley staying with them, he's finally moving out into his own place, an apartment downtown that's right upstairs from his friend and co-worker Donovan. On moving day, older brother Bain shows up to drag Radley home to Wisconsin, but Radley's not having it. As the move is finishing up, Bain starts an argument with Donovan and when Donovan returns to his apartment, he's shot by an intruder and dies soon after. Under suspicion, Bain is forced to stay in town with Jazzi and Ansel until he is cleared as a suspect. Meanwhile, Jazzi teams up again with Gaff to find a killer among several ex-cons recently out of prison. Which one is callous enough to kill for money?

There was a whole lot going on in this one, and the plot was a little bit darker than a lot of cozy mysteries. Still, it was compelling, there was no shortage of suspects and no shortage of attacks related to a search for missing money from an earlier heist. I loved that so many of the characters redeemed themselves as the book went on, from Bain mellowing from a curmugeonly ape to a happier man to former thug Jarrett, who is trying desperately to keep his nose clean and out of jail.

The culprit wasn't a big surprise, but the exciting ending made for a great conclusion and overall, a very enjoyable read. Onto the next!

House flippers, Jazzi, Ansel, their families and friends are back in the fourth Jazzi Zanders mystery novel. This time around the stakes are higher as Jazzi finds herself immersed in two separate murders.

The book starts with a bang—literally. Ansel’s brother Radley is in River Bluff when their older brother Bain arrives to try to get Radley to return to the family farm. After an argument between Radley and Bain, Radley’s boss is shot and killed. Bain becomes the prime suspect when it’s discovered his gun is missing from his truck. Murder #1, but things are far from over. It isn’t long before another killing occurs.

As Jazzi and her detective friend Gaff begin to fit the pieces together, it becomes apparent the two murders are related. Getting there—unraveling multiple threads, false leads, numerous suspects and motives makes this the most intricate Jazzi mystery to date. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, each with plenty of motive. If you like your cozies complex, while maintaining a wonderfully breezy feel, you’ll love this series and this book.

As with most mystery readers, I always like trying to “finger” the murderer before the reveal, but I love the family and friends element in this series every bit as much. This time around there is a wedding to prepare for, the arrival of a new baby, Easter celebrations, and the flush of new romance for new friends. Twine all of that up with a great mystery, adorable pets, two fabulous lead characters, plus lots of home cooking, and you’ve got the winning combination that makes this series a sheer delight!

Jazzi Zanders and her handsome husband, Ansel, have settled into their new home and are happy to welcome friends and family, but not when it includes Ansel’s obnoxious older brother, Bain.

Bain is in town to persuade his other brother, Radley, to return to the family farm. Radley has no intention of going back to that lifestyle and an argument ensues until Bain slams out of the apartment. Moments later, Radley’s work supervisor is murdered on the next floor and Bain becomes the chief suspect after his gun goes missing from the glovebox of his pickup.

Bain is forced to move in with Jazzi and Ansel while the investigation is under way and drives the newlyweds crazy. Jazzi is determined to figure out who the killer is before she does some murdering of her own- on her brother-in-law!

Jazzi tags along with Detective Gaff as he questions some ex-cons and searches for clues, all while renovating a home and catering a wedding.

One of my favorite aspects of the book was Jazzi’s love of cooking a feeding the people in her life. You can tell she gets great joy from caring for others and is an important underlying theme in the story.

I give The Body in The Apartment 4 lovely kisses- A fun read!

The Body In The Apartment is the fourth book in the A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series.

After attending Jazzi and Ansell's wedding, Ansell’s brother Radley has decided to stay in River Bluffs. He has been working for Jazzi’s HVAC contractor, Thane, and has finally been able to get his own apartment. He will be living in the same building as his co-worker Donovan lives. As Jazzi, Ansell, and Radley are about to leave to move his belongings, Bain, Radley and Ansell’s brother, pulls up. He has driven down to take Radley back to the family farm. Radley has no intention leaving and they all set out to get Radley set up in his apartment. As they are getting Radley moved in, Bain gets into an argument with Donovan, the next thing they hear is a gunshot and when they go to the hall and see Donovan walk out of his apartment and collapse and in an instant he is dead. Jazzi immediately calls Detective Gaff, who she has worked with in the past. His apartment has been trashed. When Gaff learns that the gun, that was found next to the body, and when it is learned that the gun belonged to Bain and he has mysteriously disappeared, he becomes the prime suspect. Bain is far from being one of Jazzi’s friends, she suggests to Ansell that should ask him to stay until the murderer is found.
Once again Gaff asks for Jazzi’s help in the investigation, he has learned that she has a way of calming people being interviewed and has a good detective’s mind. When Ansell’s friend, Didi, has her home ransacked in a similar manner, they believe that the two must be related, but are stymied at what the connection might be. Jazzi and Gaff need to check out some ex-cons to find the killer.

Another well-written and plotted book in this interesting series. The book has an interesting and believable cast of characters, many that I would enjoy calling a friend.

There are delicious sounding recipes in the book.

I will be watching for The Body from the Past, due out in September 2020.

The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn is the 4th book in the Jazzi Zanders mystery series, and another great addition. I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyable. Jazzi, her husband Ansel, and her cousin Jerod buy houses together and flip them. Radley, Ansel's brother has been staying with them, but he is finally moving into his own apartment. Bain, also Ansel's brother demands that Radley return home with him and work on the farm. When Radley moves into his apartment, his supervisor Donovan is murdered and dies in front of them all. Bain becomes a suspect, and Jazzi is determined to find out what really happened. This book has a bit of everything, humor, mystery, romance, and great characters. I look forward to the next book in the series, and I highly recommend this book, and the whole series.

Jazzi and Ansel are happily married now, and still in the house flipping business with Jerod, Jazzi’s cousin. Ansel’s brother, Radley, has been living with them since they got married, but now he is moving into his own apartment. He is excited to be moving into the same apartment complex as his boss, Donovan. When Ansel and Radley’s oldest brother, Bain, finds out that Radley is staying in River Bluffs, he is furious and drives over to Radley’s apartment with the goal of dragging him back home to the farm. Donovan tried to step in to help defend Radley and his decision to stay, but he backs off when Bain becomes defensive. Donovan leaves, but not long after that, the foursome hear a gunshot. When they look out, they see Donovan covered in blood and stumbling to the ground outside his apartment. Although they all rush to help Donovan and call 911, Donovan doesn’t make it. Because of her close relationship with him, Jazzi calls Gaff in the hopes that he will help with the case.

In the confusion of everything, Bain disappears. When Jazzi and Ansel go in search of him, they find him looking in his truck’s glove compartment in bewilderment. It seems Bain had brought a gun with him, but now it is gone. Gaff would come to learn that it was Bain’s gun that had been used to shoot Donovan. Although not a likely suspect, he is the only suspect for the moment, and Gaff tells him not to leave town. Once again, Gaff enlists Jazzi’s help to talk with the people involved in the case. Jazzi has her hands full with the fixer-upper, the case, and the fact that Bain is living with her and Ansel until he is cleared as a suspect. Jazzi is anxious to see this case solved to find justice for Donovan, provide closure for her friends, and to see Bain head back home.

This is the fourth Jazzi Zanders mystery and I’ve loved every single one. Each book is filled to the brim with mystery, suspense, construction, good food, and great family. All of which come together to create a winning combination. This installment focuses on Ansel’s family and Jazzi and Ansel’s growing extended “family.” Ansel is joined by both his brothers in this book. Radley has been living with them until he can get on his own two feet, and Jazzi loves him. When Bain is forced to stay with them, Jazzi is miserable. She hates Bain’s bad attitude, and how he treats Ansel, Radley, and their mother. We learn in this story though that an unlikable character can have redeeming qualities. During his involuntary stay in River Bluffs, Bain decides to help with work on the fixer-upper, and in the process he learns a lot more than just about construction.

The murder in this story is more elaborate and has a lot more players than in the other books. The reader must carefully follow the clues and twists and turns to successfully find their way to the solution. The mystery is clever, suspenseful, and never loses a step. The characters are great, and you can’t help but wish you were one of the crew. You won’t want to put this book down until you reach the end.

I’m excited there will be a fifth book in the series, The Body from the Past.

This is the fourth book in the Jazzi Zanders mystery series by Judi Lynn.

What a fun and enjoyable read. This book is filled with so many foodie ideas for meals that I think this is my favorite part of the book. Just seeing what Jazzi will cook up is a crazy ride all in itself. I think I need a Jazzi Cooks cookbook.

Basic premise: Ansel’s brother, Radley has decided to stay in town and leave the farm and his brother and father behind. When they try to move him into the same building as his supervisor, Donovan, they find Donovan shot and dead in his apartment. Then Radley’s brother, Bain shows up trying to drag his brother back to the farm. Turns out the gun used to shoot Donovan was taken from Bain’s truck. Now he is stuck in town until the police will let him return home. Then Bain moves into the guest room at Jazzi and Ansel’s house much to Jazzi’s dismay.

I have read one other book in this series, but I find it a bit odd that Detective Gaff is always having Jazzi ride with him when he meets suspects. I am not sure that would happen in real life. I would more believe that Gaff has a crush on Jazzi and is just wanting to spend time with her. But since I haven’t read all the previous books, I am not completely certain of his intentions. I do enjoy a good Gaff scene, though. Detectives are my guilty pleasusre!

The book was interesting and it really kept my attention all the way though. The characters are all distinct and I know who they are when they enter a scene. This is nice since we don’t always get to know the minor characters very well due to their limited involvement with the plot.

I thought having Bain there as a foil for Jazzi and Ansel’s romantic time was pretty funny. Every time they wanted to get together, there he was. I wonder if he will show up in future books. I totally loved how Walker adopted Didi and her son and then ended up falling for her. Would have loved to see more of that, for sure!

If you love a good cozy mystery definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

This book contained a well planned mystery and the author’s descriptions of George the pug were spot on! I’d love to know if the author has a pug since I have a one myself!
I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator but many of the male characters’ names sounded the same so I really had to pay attention to who was who. Can’t wait to read the next one.

This is book 4 in the Jazzi Zanders series and I think it's my favorite so far. It can be read as a stand alone but it has characters from past books playing big roles so you might want to read previous stories to fully get this one. Jazzi and husband, Ansel are flipping a big home along with her cousin Jerod. Ansel's brother, Radley stayed in town after the wedding, leaving the family farm. Oldest brother Bain has come to take Radley back home when he is accused of murder. Judi Lynn has made Bain a likable character and you want to know how the family saga turns out. I admire Jazzi for her hard work as a carpenter and her need to keep the extended family close for weekly meals. Good mystery and several good recipes. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Jazzi and Ansel are helping his brother Radley move into his new apartment. What should be a great day turns sour when the third brother, Bain, shows up and tries to bring Radley home to work on the farm. When Radley refuses to go with his brother, Bain decides to tag along. While the guys help move furniture into the new apartment, Radley’s boss and friend is found murdered in his apartment and it turns out Bain’s gun was used to murder the man. Now Jazzi and Ansel have Bain staying with them, making fur a not so happy home.

As time goes on it seems the murder is tied to a group of ex cons, some who seem to be trying to go straight, but none of which the police can get enough evidence on for the murder. When one of the ex cons is murdered it takes things up another notch. While Jazzi helps the detective to put some people at ease when he speaks with them, she also trying to flip a house and cater a double wedding. Will being a caring and giving person backfire on Jazzi and Ansel and draw the wrath of the murderer before the police can solve the case? It’s a race to the altar and the evidence..

Another solid entry in this flipping cozy mystery series. Just when you think you don’t care for one of the characters the writer shows another side of them and you find yourself rooting for them. Well written and solidly developed characters that keep me coming back for more.

Jazzi and Ansel are very happily married, with one TINY downside, Ansel's brother Radley is still staying with them so when he finally a) earns enough and b) finds an apartment they are happy to help him move, what they are NOT happy with is Ansel's other brother Bain has turned up, had a major argument with Radley (basically telling him to shift himself back to the farm as they need his unpaid labour!), Bain also gets into an argument with Radley's boss Donovan who also has an apartment in the building, but no one was expecting Donovan to be shot with Bain's gun!

Now Detective Gaff has told Bain to stick around, so less than a few hours after Radley moved out of their house Jazzi and Ansel are moving Bain in! Now whilst Radley would muck in and help and was almost as easy going as Ansel, Bain is very much the opposite, so if Jazzi and Ansel want their home back then Jazzi will need to team up with Gaff again and help him find out the truth, because whilst Bain may be surly and argumentative they can't believe he is a cold blooded killer.

The Body in the Apartment is the fourth installment in the A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series set in River Bluffs, Indiana and featuring house flipper Jazzi Zanders, her husband Ansel and cousin Jerod. The trio is continuing the massive renovation on the three story home they recently purchased to flip, and Ansel's brother Radley, who recently left home to get away from his tyrannical father and brother, has found an apartment and is moving out of Jazzi's home.

Moving day has arrived and with the whole family helping to move Radley into a building where is boss Donovan also resides they are surprised when Ansel's other brother Bain appears demanding that Radley return home to once again work on the family farm. Radley is not going to be bullied by his older brother and after a nasty argument Bain storms away. Minutes later a shot rings out on the second floor and everyone races downstairs to witness Donovan staggering out of his apartment clutching his chest. Donovan passes away at the scene, the murder weapon is a gun belonging to Bain. Despite her ill feelings towards Bain, Jazzi once again teams up with Detective Gaff to track down a killer.

A twisted plot that involves a group of ex cons, the mystery is interwoven with renovation details and the ever growing relationships between families and friends. Dual nuptials, a new baby and the slow melting of a cold heart will leave you looking forward to the next installment in the series. While it still remains a little far fetched that Detective Gaff relies so much on Jazzi, it was a relief that the author has finally stopped making continual reference to Jazzi and Ansel's sex life.

The Body in the Apartment is the fourth book in Judi Lynn’s Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. There are more adult overtones than usually found in cozies. The characters are likable, the storyline is entertaining, and there are lots of twists and red herrings in this steadily paced book.

Jazzi Zanders Herstad, her husband, Ansel, and her cousin, Jerod, flip houses in the River Bluffs, Indiana area. Jazzi is very close to her family and hosts a family meal every Sunday. Jerod’s wife, Franny, will soon be giving birth to their third child, and Jazzi’s sister, Olivia, and her live-in boyfriend, Thane, are planning their wedding. Ansel’s older brother, Radley, is moving out of Jazzi and Ansel’s home, and Ansel and Radley’s oldest brother, Bain, makes a surprise visit to force Bain to return to the family’s farm. Radley, who is happy with his new life, refuses to return, and Bain storms out of the apartment. Moments later, they hear a gunshot on the floor below, and find Radley’s work supervisor, Donovan, stumbling out of his ransacked apartment. Bain claims his gun has been stolen from his glovebox, and since Donovan was shot, he becomes Detective Gaff’s prime suspect. Since Bain can’t leave town until he’s proven innocent, Jazzie and Ansel reluctantly invite him to move into the room Radley just moved out of. Detective Gaff finds himself in a complex investigation when another murder occurs, more homes are ransacked, and people are beaten up. Jazzie accompanies Gaff on several interviews, and because people tend to confide in her, she shares what she learns with him.

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.

This one was a little different to the many cosy murder mysteries I've read. The main character, Jazzi, is on the scene when the crime takes place and it is evident she has a great relationship with the detective-in-charge who recognises her skills in getting people to open up. She doesn't try to take the lead but does spend time mulling over possibilities and responding to requests for help whenever she is called on.

There is a lot of stuff included in the book that does not relate to the solving of the initial murder. At first it felt complementary, helping me understand the ensemble cast as there is a lot of detail on the social aspects of Jazzi's life (eg: her penchant for cooking for very large groups and the progress with the work on the house that they are working on to flip). Eventually, I found this a bit much though I am sure other readers will enjoy it.

The plausibility of some of the timelines and storylines was definitely in question at times but I did appreciate the depth of the relationships described and the strong bonds which were evidence of an investment made in caring for and supporting each other despite a range of difficult circumstances.

I didn't really feel a strong tension in the storyline, but it was still very enjoyable.

With thanks to #Netgalley, Kensington Books and the author for my advanced reader copy. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.

A Wonderful New Installment to an Old Favorite Series

Jazzi is back. And another murder has rocked her world—and her brother-in-law looks guilty. How’s that for starting with high stakes?

And it only get more exciting.

The plot is cleverly crafted and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cast—both old favorites and new characters—continue to keep me riveted on every page. I mean, what woman would love Ansel? But the rest of them shine in their own right. It’s nice to see them continue to develop and grow, just like friends in the real world. And the pets and the recipes are happy bonuses I look forward to in each book.

I love that this world is expanding and hope this series continues on for a long time to come. I suspect there are many more stories to tell. And I’ll happily devour all of them.

Amusing for its insights into the mores of the American ? lower middle class ? (they seem pretty solid to me, but also have day to day contacts with ex-convicts) working hard and devoted to family life, distinctive as compared with the regular anomic jaded cops and private Is. Interesting details about house renovation in the flipping industry. But the main focus is on food, and here I found myself in disagreement. I finally balked when I heard that she was going to buy a twenty pound ham and a.. big lump of beef for Easter. Pies, cakes, candies and cobblers, all lubricated with gallons of (industrial) ice cream, with talk of “loading plates” and “digging in”. OK, I hear US ice cream is pretty good, but all of this is close to food porn. I think it’s deliberately compensated by the hardworking lifestyle of the family and the giant size of “my Viking”, as the (man/men) tend to be (rather sickeningly) referenced. I fear that this quantity of food doesn’t usually produce gentle giants but grotesque fatties straight out of Larson’s Far Side.

The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn
Book #4: Jazzi Zanders Mystery Series
Source: NetGalley and Lyrical Press
Rating: 4½/5 stars

If Jazzy Zanders believed in such things, she may start to believe she’s something of a divining rod for dead bodies. Yet again, through no fault of her own, Jazzy has stumbled upon a dead body and the good Detective Gaff has called on Jazzy to help sort out the crime.

Unfortunately, this particular crime is hitting disturbingly close to home as Jazzy’s brother-in-law, Bain is suspect number one of Detective Gaff’s list. Bain’s bad attitude certainly doesn’t help his case and with no option to leave town, he’s forced to stay with Jazzy and Ansel until he can be cleared of the crime. To complicate the mystery, homes all over town are being broken into and ransacked with nothing taken but a sense of security. Though both Jazzy and Gaff can’t see the immediate connection between the murder and the break-ins, they know there has to be one.

With each new break-in, Jazzy and Ansel’s life becomes a bit fuller. Bain has moved in temporarily, Radley is over often with his new romantic interest, and family friend Walker has also developed a crush who has become a permanent fixture at Sunday dinners. Though murder shouldn’t have a happy or positive effect, broadening their family and friends’ network sure seems to be a side effect of this particular murder. As it happens the broadening of the circle helps Jazzy and Gaff piece together the puzzle that has been plaguing their days and nights. Unfortunately, what Jazzy and Gaff discover is a very violent ex-con willing to go to any lengths to get what he wants.

The Bottom Line: One of the hallmarks of a good author is his/her ability to take a beloved series and put it through its paces. That is, cause the characters to evolve, find new and interesting ways to test the characters, have a constant fresh perspective all while never losing the original spirit and essence of said characters. That is absolutely happening with this series and the deeper in I get, the more I am enjoying myself. As with the other books in this series, I liked the plot in this book, but I most enjoyed the broadening of the social circle. Jazzy and Ansel love to help others and to entertain and that is so very evident in their weekly Sunday meals. The Sunday meals are probably my favorite part of these stories as this is where you really see the spirit of love, friendship, acceptance, loyalty, and community shine. Though it sounds bad to say so, I sure hope Jazzy Zanders keeps stumbling over dead bodies 😊

A lighthearted and fun cozy mystery with extremely likable characters. The Body in the Apartment is my first forte into Judi Lynn’s writing and is very far from my last.

Jazzi is an awesome character, who can do just about anything. Not only can she hang drywall with the best of them, this woman can cook just about anything. She has a strong body and a strong mind yet cares above and beyond what friendship is and her sense of compassion is something that can’t be topped. Jazzi is one of those people that if she makes you a friend, you have become family. Even if that family drives her crazy, her loyalty is unwavering.

The Body in the Apartment finds House flipper Jazzi, her husband Ansel, and her cousin Jared In the middle of restoring a beautiful Victorian house while helping Ansel's brother get a new start on his life when they stumble upon a murder that happens moments before. Getting mixed up in a murder is not something new to this trio but for me the way they go about it is exceptionally entertaining. Nothing like family drama to keep things interesting. What I found unique about this book was how the local cop enlisted Jazzi help and compassion with those that may be delicate to interview. This trio of characters along with their family and friends are extremely close and very nosy. Everyone seemed to know what was going on with everyone yet always seemed to help or support in any way they could.

The Body in the Apartment is a drama filled yet well written mystery with a good plot that keeps you thinking. I loved that Jazzi is always feeding everyone. You can definitely tell food is her thing and she loves sharing that with everyone. This book takes us from a gutted out it out house, to neighborhoods people have to be careful visiting to getting tangled with ex cons and making wedding cake. Ms. Lynn Has readers all over the place with this book and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

This is the 4th installment in the Jazzi Zanders series. Jazzi along with Ansel and her cousin Jerod flip houses for a living. Jazzi and Ansel have been married for a couple of months and Ansel’s brother Radley has been living with them since the wedding and is about to move into his own apartment. Ansel and Radley’s brother Bain arrives and tries to talk Radley into going back home and back to the dairy farm. His reply is no and Bain is not going to stop. He follows them to the apartment building and while there Radley’s boss Donovan is shot and killed with Bain’s gun (which he left in his unlocked truck). Bain now has to stay with Jazzi and Ansel as he cannot leave town. Jazzi and Bain do not exactly see eye to eye so this is a struggle. A friend of Ansel’s Didi her house is broken into and trashed just like Donovan’s apartment before he was shot. Is there a connection? Walter takes one look at Didi and falls head over heels and invites her to stay with him. This seemed a little quick but it did work out. Also Jazzi’s sister Olivia gets engaged as Thane her boyfriend was also a friend of Donovan and it really shook him up to find him dead. Jazzi and Ansel will be holding the reception and their house, continue to renovate a Victorian and Gaff still includes Jazzi on many of his questioning of victims and their families. It was nice to see Bain evolve over the couple of weeks he is forced to be in town and for him to forge a better relationship with Jazzi and Ansel. Jazzi and Ansel do surround themselves with friends and family and that is good to see. It was a good mystery with many leads and then dead ends. I really enjoy this series.

Judi Lynn returns with the 4th installment of her Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. Jazzi is busy flipping houses and baking up a storm and helping Ansel's brother Radley move into his new apartment. He is living in the same building with his boss Donovan who during the move is shot to death. Worse then that Ansel's oldest cantankerous brother Bain is the main suspect and must stay at Jazzi's place while the investigation unfolds. Jazzi and Detective Gaff go face to face with a ring of theives fresh out of prison and must solve Donovan's murder before anyone else dies and Bain drive's her crazy.

The Jazzi Zanders mysteries are fun and light reads. The characters are enjoyable and the pacing of the stories are always good. They can be read as stand alone books but they do build on some of the stories lines and background. Jazzi loves to cook and makes interesting dishes which Lynn includes recipes for at the end of the book. These mysteries are great for a Sunday read.

This is the fourth Jazzi Zanders mystery and I think it might be the best. There are lots of things I like about this book. The season in the book coincides with when the book is published - winter is turning to spring. So often books are set in a different time of year from when they are published. I think I connected more with the book because I am experiencing the same cold and warm days intermingled as spring tries to overcome winter. Ansel’s brother Radley moves out. Olivia and Thane are going to marry. Walker meets a nice girl and falls in love. Bain turns out to be a fairly nice guy away from the influence of his father. Weekly family dinners with wonderful sounding food and cookies for Easter.
All these lovely elements and the murder and mysteries give a little bit of a shiver to the reader. Who is behind all the awful things that are happening and what will it take to catch them?
I still don’t quite get Detective Gaff not having a partner and taking Jazzi with him, but everything else about the story is great.
I would say that reading at least the second and third books would be beneficial before reading this because there are just so many characters that it seems important to get a feel for the main personalities. The first book introduces things first but felt like it dragged a little to me. I fully recommend The Body in the Apartment.

Wow! I have loved every book in this series so far and this one did not disappoint. This book was a little more action packed and twisty than the previous books which is good, but it also meant there were a lot more characters and at times it became difficult to remember who was who. I still love all of the original characters and found Ansel's brothers much more likable in this book. I hope to see more of them in the future.

Thank you to netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn is book four in the A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. This has become one of my favorite series and I have only read two of them.
One of Jazzi's brother in laws, Radley, has decided to leave the family farm and move to River Bluffs and now another brother in law, hot head Bain, is in town trying to convince him to move back to the farm. Bain leaves the apartment angry and just a few minutes later. Radley's supervisor, who also lives in the building, is found shot to death. When it's discovered that Bain's gun is missing from his truck, Jazzi knows she is going to have to dive in and figure out who done it. Add on top, the gun is found to be the murder weapon and now Bain is the main suspect and can not leave River Bluffs, he of course needs to stay with Jazzi and Ansel. More the reason to get to the bottom of what is going on. When another person possibly involved turns up missing and later dead, Jazzi knows this is bigger then just a break in gone wrong.
There are great characters, family and friendship, plenty of twists and turns and a wedding in this easy to read cozy. I also enjoyed reading about the meals and food Jazzi prepares. There are recipes included.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
