Yes another academy.

I need rehab, but this is the one I've been waiting for. The needle in the haystack, the diamond in the rough! It was everything I needed and more and all in a debut novel is pretty impressive

Don’t let that unassuming cover make you slide past this. If I hadn’t been recommend it by Brandy I probably wouldn’t have picked this up. Yea I do judge a book by its cover sometimes but I’m glad I have friends who don’t or I would have been missing out.
I'm not going to summarize or give a guy guide in this review, the blurb says enough and the best part of this book was discovering the harem.

This review turned out to be more long winded than it needed to be sorry. I just have so much to say about this book when really all I need to say is

But if you want to know why you should read it, then read on....

So many things stood out from the usual

It was original
The caste system for the demonic powers was so clever and well thought out. Once each demon is awakened in one of the 7 "deadly sins" castes they are then sorted into sub-caste where their power is derived from. So if you were a Pride demon you might be Pride - narcissism or Sloth - slumber . So all that demon needs to sleep or be self centered to get a power up. Once they have the power thy can do all kinds of magic with it.

It also takes all those tropes you automatically project onto Rh and turn them on their head. So many times I though “oh well duh that’s gonna happen” well I was wrong every time. I think some parts were included just to put us off the scent of what’s really gonna happen.

The length
At 500 pages its not easy to keep things fresh and pages turning but this had quality as well as quantity. There was time to expand the world and let us get a real feel for it. Seven mates is also not an easy thing to pull off, as you’d imagine some were a little more “instabond” than others but I liked them all, each had a distinctive personality and some had little kinks to make them stand out. So many of the 250 page RH right now are too short just don't expand enough especially when it covers a full year of school. It was a good choice to not cut this short and make it into 2 books - which probably could have been done easily.

Lilith
Lilith finds herself at the bottom of society in the outcast caste. They are persecuted and seen as being dirty and unwanted. Lilith has even more to overcome with the appearance of her horns. I felt so sorry for her at the beginning. There is a little bullying in that the whole demon society is predujuce against her caste and her in particular. She’s in danger from other demons. I found her a wonderful FMC, independent but fragile. Tough when she needs to be, powerful but not conceited. And hell she even manages to have friends who are girls! That just doesn’t happen

It’s action packed as as well as relationship packed. It’s got everything. Plots, sub plots, flawed characters, overprotective mates, danger, kinky sex (yea adults only), magic duals, a mild cliffhanger, and I loved every minute.

It reminded me a little of Void

some of this i loved and some i hated. a good enough read for when you're bored & don't know what to do.

wasn't a fan of how the whole 7 mates thing was handled i think it was too rushed. they also accepted the fact that they were gonna be in a relationship involving 7 other people way too easily and quickly. especially the fmc.

the smut was also kinda all over the place because it felt like the author just picked a random mmc to finally have sex with the fmc with not much thought behind it other than to create some sexy time.

it was still fun tho and i loved the found family feel especially with the fmc's caste!

✦ large harem (7 mates)
✦ academy setting with different castes (like different houses)
✦ demons centered around the seven deadly sins
✦ characters with unique powers
✦ some slowburn some fast burn depending on the mate
✦ protective MMCs
✦ OP fmc

YOU GUYS.

I’m having such a hard time.....

deciding what caste I’d be in.

At first I thought Lust, because I’m a Libra, duh.
But then I thought Gluttony, because I’m addicted to chocolate, clothes, shoes, and cake.
And then I thought Pride, because of a lot of reasons I wish not to state like the fact that I love looking at mirrors.
Don’t judge. *channeling my best Pruitt attitude*

So anyway,

This book.

Oh.

I loved it. I did.
Great world.
Love the castes.
TEAM DEMONS!

The first half of this book was most exciting.

I will say I wasn’t a huge fan of the second half of the book after Aeron was discovered as mate and the Order and her true purpose yada yada, when Lilith starting acting like a clueless, helpless, confused CHILD.

GROW UP SWEETIE, ADULTING SUCKS.

Moving on,

I also wasn’t a huge fan of the predictability in the second half.

The action scenes were.... were..... hmm.

It also took me til MATE NUMBER THREE to realize Aeron is Aaron with an e...
Y’all....
I felt so stupid.

The men:
Cool dudes, but I wish there was as much development with mates #2-6 as there was with mate #1.
And for real 7??
SEVEN?
Those are a lot of poles for such a clueless hole.

I just hope book 2 has more momentum than the second half of this one.

All in all, great read and I couldn’t wait to finish it. Excited for book 2.

Marie, you need a new editor. IF someone edited this, they did an awful job. Hell, I’ll do it for free.

Alright fellow reviewers and GR friends, tell me, what’s your demon caste?

Not a perfect read but defiantly entertaining. One thing for sure, I still cannot get enough of the Academy trope.

I did not like Lilith but I absolutely fell in love with the universe.

I very much liked that no character were necessarily evil; some had motivations, some has reasons and some were just waiting to get on the MC's side. But I really did not like Lilith.
Lilith was very special, while in a way, she wasn't that unique but also had a real problem: she always thought nobody liked her at first and it became really annoying after a few encounters. She would cry out every time she met someone knew when the reader already knew they were going to be best buddies after a few chapters.

The universe and its complexity was simply amazing. I had never read a book with this idea before and I absolutely fell in love with it.
Demons walk the earth along humans. Until their 20th years, they go to school with us, hiding what they really are. And once they reach 21 years old, they are sent one of the university for demons to have their Showing and learn about their caste.
Seven deadly sins, seven castes and the Strange God knows how many sub classes. Most young demons will belong to either Pride, Greed, Gluttony, Sloth, Lust, Envy and Wrath by the end of the first few months at their academy.
I just loved how everything made so much sense in the end. Pride had so many ways to be demonstrated, so was Greed or any of the sins; Envy could be about wanting or claiming, Lust could be about desire or adultery.

I think I could read a book of demonology from the author and probably enjoy it even more that the real story. I'm serious, it was that fascinating.

It’s not you (Academy), it’s me.

I don’t think thus genre is for me, as much as I try. Once again, we have a plucky young (but not tooooo young! Because, sex! And Butt Stuff (TM)) virginal girl sent off to magical boarding school. She is the specialist snowflake and an absolute stag (or would it be a mare? What’s a sexy animal name?) in the sack in spite of starting out the book as a blushing virgin.

This book all kinds of annoyed me. The premise had promise (heh), but shit went sideways with the secret orders and priests and whatever else super special secretness surrounded Lilith about midway through the book. Then came all the boners and I’ll admit I just got board with it.

THEN! and THEN! Ms. Mistry goes and throws in an awesome character in the last 5% of the book?!? WTH! Why can’t we swap him out for Aeon, who is immature and sucks donkey balls?

Also, can we get rid of BDSM just kind of low-key tossed (heh) into books? Can we also not talk about “milking” and “cream?” First of all, I read at night and it makes me very hungry for ice cream. But MOSTLY, it’s also kinda gross.

Audio: 4 stars for Frankie Porter

Book: 3 stars

Still don’t know how to rate this, it was decent but it felt a little to YA maturity with the characters for my liking but don’t take that for no spice, there was definitely NA to adult spice. It was an interesting premise, and I really enjoyed the “Deadwood” series, but I knew it was going to be hard to match that amazingness haha

Maybe I’ll continue reading this when the other audiobooks come out, but not now! Haha

Two things turned me away from this one. Firstly the cover, it doesn’t stand out amongst the multiple digits of academy books currently flying around and I did skim past it when looking for something to read. The other thing was the page count. First thoughts were Lust demon + lots of pages = orgy book. Finally picked this one up thanks to reliable reviews. So glad I did, whilst there is plenty of sex it’s not excessive and it’s a damn good book. I love being wrong. Moving on from the bad stuff *cough* shitty parents *cough* and onto the awesome.

It’s not the first reverse harem to go with the seven sins theme, there are others. Seven wishes, Greed, Hellish but this is the one that made me go heck yeah that’s how it’s done. It’s simple. It’s not seven creatures in your head, its not used to name supernatural races or seven houses, although Hellish is the closest in similarities, it’s uncomplicated. Lilith is a demon, everyone else is a demon, the only difference is where they have a crystal on their body and in Lilith’s case her horns. The seven sins are castes and six of them are prudes that hate lust.

I liked how the guys are introduced. It’s not here have a harem, she needs to find them on her own and in that way there’s enough time for everyone to be introduced and no one gets lost in the crowd. There is fighting and there is jealousy.

Lilith herself I liked. She’s surprisingly normal and modest pre-mate corruption, having to cope with everything that has happened to her and I hope she stays that way.

Favourite character was the sloth mate, maybe wrath. Ah hell I liked em all and the one that pretty much stole the show.
That ending though, I need more.

icks:
1. bAbYgOrL
2. other weird pet names
3. misogyny
4. cringe smut
5. annoying writing
6. SO MUCH untapped potential
7. many of the guys tried out the cringe dom persona and it didn’t work at all 😃
8. gaps in the plot
9. rushed ending

also the names of all the characters makes me feel like the author google searched fantasy character last names and did a randomized character name creation. this book had SO much potential and it’s pissing me off that my expectations for this weren’t met. and the smut!!!!! this is a succubus book 😭 the smut should’ve been toe curling, back arching, palms sweaty, moms spaghetti and it was NOT 😢 in ALL of the smut scenes the guys were like “grrr IM in charge 😼. you can play later” but they never showed the scenes where she was in charge 🤨🤨 i wanted to see that 😞

edit: i’m SO TIRED of the poorly written dominate male characters. if ur going to make them cringe don’t write them 🤓

This book sure picked up speed real fast after starting and I’ll admit I’m hooked so far. While this may be an academy read, the characters are all in college and thus the sexual interludes begin rather quickly. I was taken a bit by surprise as the heroines a virgin at the start of school and in no time messing around with two guys in her demon class and then learning she has seven mates. Because of her being a succubus, her power relies on giving and receiving pleasure. Luckily with a harem of men on standby Lilith is good to go.

It’s funny because I assumed the story would go one way as far as Lilith being part of every class sin but alas she’s a Lust, the bane of her mothers existence. That woman is a mess and I have to wonder if the heroine is not better off without her. Simply finding out Lilith was a lust had her disowning her and attempting murder, absolute insanity. The concept of the demonic sins being assigned was really interesting and I loved learning all the different castes within each sin. As if being in your early 20s isn’t hard enough 🤣 I was shocked that Lilith meets all her mates in the book. Hoenstly I’m shocked given how many, I thought certainly they’d be introduced throughout the four book series but alas that’s not how it does down. Surprisingly I think I have all most of her guys figured out but I’ll admit with side characters my brain is struggling to hold all this information lol. We learn there is an organization out for her blood and out for wiping out the entire lust class. I can’t wait to see how the danger ramps up along with Lilith powers. Her horns keep growing and I imagine that’s not all to her. We’ve not seen what the true result of having mated all her guys is either and that last one brings up so many questions and new dilemmas I’m eager to jump into book two. So far so good 🤓

The humor was excellent, I liked the main character, the world-building fun, but some of the overdone and cheesy intimacy and dialogue soured me down a few stars. 7 is too much - also, a cliffhanger. At least we get a weird academy, fun friends, funny banter, a deranged mother, a frustrating father, a plot, and horns. Full review to come.

Hmmm, I'm not really sure how the rate this. Somewhere between 3 and 4.

To start off, the world building in this is really interesting an doeigibal and actually well paced and explained. It's not massively complicated to take in, but in itself is complex. If that wasn't the case then this would be an average 3 star for me.

To people who don't have some of my hang ups with certain things in books, this probably is a 4 star read. It's well written, a decent length for a RH book and has tons of potential for the following books.

However, there were several things that niggled at me, which is making it not quite 5 stars for me.

As I mention often in reviews, I don't like books set in schools, mainly because the cheesy tropeyness of it gets on my nerves, and also because teenagers can be pretty irritating protagonists. I read this because I figured, seeing as the chatacet was 20,thia would be a University type setting. However, she might as well have been 16 for the type of rules and regulations there were, uniforms, birltchy girls, bitchy teachers, classes, exams etc. The only reason we're told she's 20 is to pretty much justify the amount of sex she has and that those are having around her. But the narrative voices could have been way younger. Secondly, I wanted the MC to be a bit tougher. Hopefully she will be once she develops her powers in the next book, but I did find her a bit irritating at times. I also wasn't a massive fan of many, if any of the guys. Aeron was an ass and his possessiveness from the start made him quite fialiakeble, which I never fully got over. The geeky guy, Damon I think, was just too stereotypical of that type of harem character, Bane was okay, but needed to get his head out of his ass, Blaze wad alps okay, but I found him Dominance thing as bit over the top and cheesy, the same with Kain and Jin had potential, but sort of felt like him and Kain were there to be the jokey twin type trope. The guy right at the end intrigued me though.

So, all in all, I would definitely recommend this series, however, for me it was a bit too fast burn, with not enough relationship or character development, which to be fair is pretty hard with 7 guys, but nonetheless, it's how I came out feeling.

I just wish the genre didn't feel like there is some sort of RH how to writer's manual that means they just seem to turn out the same. I get that self published author's have to churn out books quickly and that they know are going to sell by feeding I to what's popular right now. And you could argue it's my fault for continuing to read to much of a genre that's gotten pretty samey and stale, but I just keep hoping to find that gem of a series, outside of my few tried and tested go to authors, and it just feels like I keep reading os much of the same.

Not this author's fault though that I feel this way and what she's trying to execute she's executes well.

Unputdownable

I love loved this book!! It was so well written and the world background was seamlessly explained as were the characters. The MC is strong and brave but not arrogant and her harem are all very different but gorgeous! Well worth a read but don’t make plans or have any work due as this is an all consuming read and hot hot love action!!

I stopped this book a while ago and just decided to finish it recently. I liked a lot about this book except for the lead. Rarely do I hate a lead so much. She is basically a spoiled sheltered brat who prefers whining and self righteous opinions over accepting the reality of the situation. Seriously, her first reaction to any struggle or deviance from “normal” is why me behaviour and “I can’t do that” without even trying. Pathetic childish reactions. I like about half the guys but they all have some stupid reactions and opinions. And they’re all fairly sexist, not that her immature behaviour helps refute them, but they can be. If it weren’t for all the sex I’d think these characters were at a boarding school (15-18yrs) not a university (18-22yrs).

I’m still reading because once again I have nothing to read and I like the world building. So far in the sequel I’m still frustrated with Lilith’s behaviours, especially in regards to using her gifts. So low rating because of characters and it’s inability to hold my focus.

2.8 stars, 58%, D+/C-

Side note regarding my original low opinion of this book. I completely forgot since I started this ages ago about the fact that the father of two of the harem members is a freaking rapist. I’m sorry but that whole plot line and how we aren’t supposed to hate his character for some reason is fuckedup. I get what the author was trying to do in his weird grief/revenge but it just doesn’t work. If this book was still in edits I would have told the author to alter that whole background storyline because nothing makes rape acceptable. And the fathers character is involved in the plotline and his history affects the plotline so we are stuck with him. Which means his background needs to be altered if I’m supposed to give a crap about him. Furthermore, yes Saxon’s treatment of her son is horrible also, but I have more sympathy for her than her rapist at least her bahviour in the story makes sense. Whereas her rapist gets to act like he did nothing wrong and plays the doting father role. This whole background plot point needed revision and is a strong reason for my low rating as it is an example of some of the weird logic this book employs that irritated me initially.

I can definitely tell that A Demon’s Horns is one of Marie Mistry’s first books. The writing in this isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either. There were some lines in this that were cringey and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Also the pet names are so eughh.
That being said, I enjoyed this anyways. I liked the characters, I’m invested in the plot, and I’m hoping the series just gets better. This is a guilty pleasure, but I’m here for a good time not a long time.

Enjoyed the Demon world

Lilith is a First year student in a demon college where she must find all Seven of her mates by the end of the school year and Ball.

Seven men and One woman equals HOT! Especially when Lilith is from the List caste.

I can't wait to hear more from Enzo since he joined so late. Also Babe that just is so stubborn.

Saying I’m sorry now for the long review!

As of now, I really don’t know how I feel about this book. Our main character is a demon who is set to begin her studies at Vice Demon College, where she will find out what type of demon she is, hone her powers, and then be placed in a career that suits her powers. The concept of the different types of demons, their powers, their standings in the world, etc was a new one for me. The author did bring a fresh idea to the demon academy trope, for sure. I also want to point out that this book was hot as hello! I mean, it’ll leave you hot and bothered and reaching into your nightstand to take care of things yourself.

What I didn’t like, I honestly felt like Lilith didn’t have a true personality. Yes, we get a little backstory on her family, yes we learn that she took ballet and pole dancing, and yes, we watch her interact with her friends and mates, but I don’t feel like we truly know Lilith as a person. Or her mates for that matter. They all have something to tell them apart from the rest, such as one is the headmasters son, one is a kinky head of security, two play rugby, one is a nerd, but that’s really alllllll we know personality wise about all of them. I really would have liked to see more character development.

Also, Lilith is kind of annoying lol I mean, I liked her fine, but the author almost has a way of writing her as aggressive? Not sure if that’s the word I want to use or not. But for example, she’s talking to a friend, and and all of a sudden Lilith is “snatching” something away from her, basically giving off an annoyed or pissed off vibe. And this happens quite a lot. It was weird. Like there was no reason for her to act that way and it threw me off a little bit. If you’ve read this book, tell me if I’m just imagining this, please.

This book was pretty long. Longer than most series starters, and that’s not always a bad thing but I did feel like we spent a lot of time listening to Lilith talk about how she’s so exhausted and busy, hasn’t really seen any of her mates and is just going through the motions of school life basically. I’m sure this was meant to speed the timeline up a bit, because the whole book had been leading up to the summer solstice dance at the end of the year. I just felt like there was A LOT of unnecessary filler that could have just been left out. At one point, after complaining about not being able to spend much time with her mates, she’s planning to go to a rugby game alone. Girl, you just said you missed your mates but now you’re irritated because they don’t want you going to a game by yourself? Get. It. Together.

My BIGGEST pet peeve: and let me start by saying maybe this will be addressed later in the series? Maybe. A father of her mate, is known to have RAPED aaaaaalot of women before. Yes, I said raped. And this is just basically glossed over. Lilith meets this man and nothing is ever mentioned about the fact that she’s conversing with a KNOWN RAPIST, that her mate seems to have a good relationship with his dad, even though he was only conceived because his dad raped his mother. Like what? That’s not something that can just be so casually thrown out there and then ignored. Thankfully, he didn’t play tooo big of a part in this book at all, which is the only reason I didn’t throw this book out the window.

Even with all of my dislikes towards this book, I was still hooked and chose to finish the book. Hence the reason I don’t know how to rate this book. Part of me wants to just stop reading it because I’m not sure if it will get better, and the other part of me thinks it has such potential that is HAS to get better. I guess I’ll try the next book and see how it goes from there!

Am I the only one who didn't like this book????
It felt so rushed omg. The premise and the plot are SO GOOD, but the execution and development was SO BAD. It was just poorly written, super rushed regarding the mates and none of them have chemistry, like your girl has seven mates and 0 chemistry with every single one of them. There's no tension, no banter, no growth, no nothing. It was just so boring I had to skim the last 40% because the same thing just kept happening over and over again - she would randomly find a guy who hates everyone but weirdly enough has a soft spot for her BEFORE THEY EVEN TALK and boom! omg we're mates but he doesn't want to be my mate I didn't mean to mate you omg I'm so sorry and then the guy is like "oh no baby/sunshine/pet????????/and a hundred other names they use to call her, don't worry about it. come sit on my face plssss" like no
and the sex scenes are also so bad I had to skip a couple AND I RARELY DO THAT.
anyway, awful. the only reason I didn't DNF it was because I had already spent 5 hours of my precious time reading this book to even finish it at the end. but not worth my time

Omg! I have been settling far too long with RH books! A Demon’s Horns has raised the bar so high I’m not sure what I should do now. Book two isn’t out yet! I need my fix of Vice College and Lilith’s harem (yes I’m aware I’ve only just finished book one).

How do I explain how amazingly written this novel was?

Firstly, the harem wasn’t shoved into our unsuspecting faces within the first few chapters. It’s so refreshing to read a RH without screaming internally at the FMC to ‘get on with it’ and acknowledge the extremely obvious soul bond or mating that ‘just is too good to be true’. - You know the books I mean.

The world building on top of this was phenomenal and one of the few academy books I’ve read recently that felt realistic (in a demons exist kind of way).

Can this be the new Curse of the Gods?

This is Marie Mistry’s first novel and omg could she have done any better? I need book two! It’s kinda a mix of slow-burn and fast-burn! Can I hive it 6/5?

Definite must read for all RH lovers.

The basic premise is that all the rich demons go to this snobby college for four years because exposure to large numbers of their own kind forces their powers to manifest. They'll be one of seven houses (after the seven deadly sins) and there's no way to determine which way it'll go.
I liked the idea of this one better than the execution. It got to the point that anytime a male character was introduced I went “Oh, he’ll be her mate”. And he was. It didn't really bother with male characters beyond her mates, other than the teachers. And I didn't like any of her mates. They're pretty two dimensional, and some of their interactions made my skin crawl. And some of those sex scenes were just... cringey. Like, no. Just no. None of that is sexy at freaking all. It was a really weird dynamic, and as the MC refuses to have a single conversation with anyone and just runs away and hides in her room all the time, it got a bit old.
For demons though... they're pretty saintly. I mean, the MC gets sorted into Lust and the initiation is a kiss. It's surprisingly wholesome. Don't get me wrong, this is still intended for adults. But like eight months after getting six mates she's only had sex with two of them, and she's a succubus. Sometimes she needed power twice a day, other times she went weeks between top ups. It didn't really compute.
There's quite a few weird time jumps in here too, and it's really hard to judge passage of time. The whole book is her first year of college (I think). The ending felt rushed and I'm not 100% sure what actually happened there.
There is a lot going on, most of which doesn't fully play out or pay out in this book, but you can see where it's building. I do think there'll be a lot of character growth in the series, and it'll probably settle a bit more in future books now that her harem is basically established but it was a lot of pages and I don't think I'll make the time investment for the next one.
