They call him Mercutio.

He is a fire-wielding manticore that no man can kill.

But a man has tried, and so men must suffer…

At the edge of the known world stands The Lion's Roar, the lodge where the most skilled of hunters gather, drink, and plan.

While some men would settle for a grizzly, the lions are after mythical game: basilisks that can turn a heart to stone, gryphons that can move unseen, and untold creatures never before witnessed and survived.

Now comes Mercutio, the mighty manticore, and he's set his wrath against the world's greatest hunting lodge and all those that live there.

When the shadow of death looms, the lion does not shudder; the lion roars.

A strong beginning for a series about a fantasy hunting lodge where adventurers hang out to hunt powerful monsters. It's interesting right away because the hero isn't an experienced hunter yet and is a centaur, which actually matters to the story rather than being a cosmetic detail. The story is short (reasonable for the price) but features several battles and a mystery, along with the introduction of a larger setting that seems to be tied in with the author's "The Ashfall Run" and "War of Embers". Sort of Victorian with magic and railroads and basilisks, a fun combination.

My biggest criticism is that I wasn't entirely clear on the "spellhound". It shows up while the hero is mentally checked-out and then is kind of there without the characters understanding why, or what it does. Not too big of a problem though; I still recommend this book and plan to look for the sequels.
