Getting Lucky #3

That Secret Crush

Rate this book

USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn brings more humor and heart with the third novel of her Getting Lucky series: a story about breaking curses and laying your heart on the line.

What happens when your secret crush isn’t so secret anymore?

I’ve had feelings for Eve Roberts for as long as I can remember, but because she also happens to be the twin sister of my best friend, Eric, I’ve never acted on my feelings and long ago resigned myself to keeping my crush under wraps.

But after a terrible falling-out with Eric involving a failed restaurant venture and plenty of blame on both sides, I’m back in Port Snow without my best friend and without any direction. But can you guess who’s here? Eve. And my attraction to her is as strong as ever.

As old feelings rush back, Eve and I find ourselves pulled together, whether we like it or not. Lines are crossed, secrets are kept, and we soon discover that the difference between love and friendship may not be so black and white, after all.

Everyone wants that secret crush to love them back…but will I be ready when she does?

When I was in high school I occasionally read books but was consumed by other teenage things so I didn't take the time to appreciate a good book on a cloudy day, wrapped up in a blanket on the couch. It wasn't until I received a Kindle for Christmas one year that my world completely flipped upside down. When looking for books I came across the Contemporary Romance genre and was sold and I haven't turned back since.

You can either find my head buried in my Kindle, listening to inspiring heart ripping music or typing away on the computer twisting and turning the lives of my characters while driving my readers crazy with anticipation.

I currently reside in beautiful Colorado Springs where the sun is always shining and there is a trail waiting to be hiked on every corner. I share a lovely and warm home with the love of my life and my five, four-legged children.

Pure fun and joy. The conflict was idiotic but I guess it represents the main male character nicely.

But I’m obsessed with this small town and family.

That Secret Crush is more than just a childhood crush. It is a story of believing in yourself.

The story of Reid somehow hits me hard. I am sure through out the life, we had or having experinece where we doubt our own cability and when everything fails, we blame ourselves. And that blame and guilt really gutted our confidence.

I do like how Miss Quinn bringing the story of Reid and Eve to life. They have thier own ups and downs. But they finally get it at thr end.

Small Town | Friend’s to Lovers Romance

Can I just say that I want to PERSONALLY LIVE IN PORT SNOW! I’ll take any of the Knightly brothers (they are all charmingly irresistible), live through harsh winters (I hate winter), and deal with the small-town gossip JUST TO BE THERE. Gosh, this is one fictional town I dream about. New England is a beautiful place to live because we get all the seasons and while I prefer my winters to be nonexistent, I would take ALL the winters to live there. What a magical place! I grew up vacationing in Maine and Meghan Quinn writes the details PERFECTLY. I can practically smell the ocean and see the steam rising off a bowl of lobster bisque! Sigh… I love this town, these characters, and pretty much everything to do with this series.

Readers, this series is truly amazing. Not only can you visualize and practically FEEL like your living in Port Snow through the details Meghan provides in her writing, but you can CONNECT with these characters on deep levels. Sure, it takes some of them a little time to warm up and wear their emotions on their sleeves (ahem, REID) but connecting with them is so darn easy that they feel like they’ve been your forever friends.

I loved Reid and Eve’s love story. The banter, the bickering, the playfulness, and the emotions won me over. Nothing felt too serious on the surface, but you could FEEL the connection from deep inside your soul. Friends to Lovers romances are at the top of my favorite romantic tropes and these two truly delivered. There were a few moments that grated on my nerves (men can be so STUPID sometimes **rolls eyes) but Meghan showed us that we can overcome anything if you just TRY. I loved this. Reid hasn’t had the easiest time in the past few years- love curses, loosing your business AND best friend – so I could sympathize with his actions, but I still wanted to knock some sense into him. Good thing Eve is one tough cookie because had she not been things would have been TERRIBLE. Gosh I loved it so much!

Anyway, I feel like I’m rambling. I usually do this when I fall irrevocably in love with fictional characters and that’s exactly what happened with Reid and Eve’s story. I don’t want to say it’s my favorite of the series because I honestly love them ALL, but they did fit themselves into a special place in my heart.

If you love strong willed heroines, charming and goofy heroes, a friends-to-lovers trope, AND small-town romances then you’ll want to grab That Secret Crush. This book is magnificent!

Man, I love these Knightly brothers. As good as they are on their own, getting all of them in each book is even better. They are exactly what you would think a group of brothers would behave like. I also love they way they include their sister in their group texts. They have all been very entertaining in this series.

The way Reid can't seem to keep his hands off of Eve was just hot. The best part about their relationship was how much they just seemed to adore each other. You can really see both of their infatuation with each other. I mean, they both have been secretly crushing on each other for years, so when it finally happens, they are pretty explosive.

As much as I love the love fest, you do get some feels in this book. There is a broken friendship to mend and the inevitable manly screw up that usually happens. You really see Reid, Eve and Eric, her brother, grow into their own after everything they go through.

Each book, each brother has brought us something different. I'm looking forward to the final brother's fall.

Cute, but not as good as That Forever Girl. Cheesy as fuck in some moments but I didn't mind, because the small-town nosiness of the neighbors and family banter (especially in the group chat) were funny as hell and I literally laughed out loud.

This was a brother's best friend romance but holy shit, I hated the brother. He caused all the problems from start to finish and he didn't even take all the blame when he tried to separate the couple smh.

If white male privilege turns you on this book is perfect for you

Let me be very clear. I hated everything about this book. Most of it enraged me and one scene disturbed me. The message the author sends to women in this book is truly disgusting. That message being that it doesn't matter if the man you're with doesn't respect you. It doesn't matter if he takes out all his frustrations on you. It doesn't matter if he gets upset when you try to have a conversation with him that doesn't revolve around sex. It doesn't matter if you tell him no or to stop and he keeps going. You stand by him and forgive him because eventually he may come around and actually treat you like a real person. Reid absolutely walks all over Eve in this book and she is perfectly fine with it. There is nothing he can do that is crossing the line to her. The scene in the coffee shop where he puts his hand down her pants, she literally begs him to stop, but he refuses only to go further and further down her pants....how could you even write this disgusting scene let alone try to pass it off as flirty and playful. People are watching while he does this. While he puts Eve on display. I've had friends who were raped or sexually assaulted and it isn't playful and fun. This author should be ashamed of herself for trying to romanticize and normalize this controlling, abusive behavior. It doesn't matter if you're dating, if a woman says stop, STOP!!

Beyond that disgusting behavior the author is desperate for us to not forget about Reid's package. So much time is spent going on and on about his size. All he talks about is sex. Eve has to bribe him with sex to even get him to speak with her. Entitlement and privilege drip off of Reid. He doesn't have to pay a price for any of his behavior or choice. Lose a restaurant because of his incompetence? It's okay because daddy hands him a new one. Treat your girl like an afterthought multiple times and ultimately choose your job over her? No problem. Just a couple of words and bare minimum in effort and she is right back at worshipping his crotch. I think this author played out some kind of fantasy she has about what it is to be a guy with this book. Throw in Eric who also thinks he's the gatekeeper of his sister's vagina and this book is complete with men who have no respect for her.

In the end the book is just awful. Pure sex, no romance. A complete disrespect of the female lead. A leading man who wallows in self pity but is also arrogant beyond belief. An ending so awful I almost didn't think it was real. If you value original thought or actual romance, pass on this garbage.

This is my first exposure to this author, and I can't say that this book is enticing me back for more. The characters are rather sex-obsessed. They've been friends since childhood. She's the twin of his best friend whom he fell out with after their acclaimed restaurant went bankrupt following the betrayal and grand larceny by their business manager. The aftermath of this was nasty and the friendship between the guys never recovered. Reid moved back home to work in the family business instead. Four years later he still is stuck in this rut, unable to motivate himself to cook let alone dream and aspire again for greater things. The only joy he has these days is his interactions with Eve, the object of his secret affection and sexual fantasies for years.

So far, so good right? I was enticed by this concept, the amalgamation of tropes of friends to lovers/secret crush/sister of best mate. So much potential for angst and feelings and longings. Well, I felt really cheated afterwards, because there was no such thing. Instead we had aggressive sexual come-ons by Reid from the word go to the point of making me feel uncomfortable. Okay, she wasn't exactly saying no, but nor was she saying yes initially. What happened to respecting their platonic boundaries? Lucky for him, she turned quite receptive to his heavy overtures quite quickly a few chapters into the book. I was waiting in vain for either one of them to have second thoughts about crossing the line and ruining their friendship. I was also waiting for the dual inner dialogues to express more than crude and lusty thoughts. Unfortunately, the only time there was a bit of genuine affection and care shown between them was when he comforted her at her parents' graves. I wanted more of that, more of the slow build. Yes they have been waiting for years to get together, but we were never shown the build up of the emotions. Instead it was just a sudden a sudden explosion of carnality.

Eve was a great character. Strong and determined, she didn't let life's many adversities hold her back from achieving her lofty goals. Reid meanwhile was stewing in his self-pity for too long. His hot and cold treatment of Eve probably frustrated me more than it did Eve who was far too forgiving of him. I also really don't get how an employee can get away with stealing their money without any legal consequences.

5 - "Big dick and likes to cuddle… Wow." Stars!

That Secret Crush is the third book in the Getting Lucky series, but the first book I have read by Meghan Quinn, and I know it’s only February, but it’s the best book I have read so far this year.

I loved Reid and Eve, they were such a great couple, the sexy times were plentiful and imaginative, and their verbal sparring entertaining, both of their strong characters complimented the other and the story-line worked really well around their relationship developing.

"Hitting on you was the smartest decision I ever made."

I have to say that the group texts between the Knightly siblings were absolutely stellar, so, so funny I was laughing my head off at points, I adored Brig so cannot wait for his book (which is believe is up next <3) and Amazon must have sensed how much I loved this book because the first two are 99p at the time of writing this review, so you can guess what I’ll be doing the next couple of days!

This may have been my first read by Meghan Quinn, but it absolutely won’t be my last, I cannot wait to read more by her (old & new) over the coming months.

First Impressions
That Secret Crush is the third book in the Getting Lucky series and this is Reids book and I was so curious to see what we would get with Reid’s book. He is the jokester of the family so I just knew that I would be in for an entertaining time and I was definitely correct on that score. I also knew that this was an unrequited love mixed with a hint of forbidden and a best friend sibling trope so it basically has all my favorite tropes all in one book and plus I love this coastal small town and the great humor that only Meghan Quinn can write, I was super stoked about this book. And yeah I absolutely adored this book here, it was everything I could have wanted and more, and even though there were some slight issues I had with the second half of the story, this book was a pure delight, had sweet deep layers, and a delectable facet of charm and wit guaranteed to lighten the load of any reader

Big dick and likes to cuddle. Wow, Knightly, you should have been advertising that a long time ago.

Summary
Reid and Eve have been friends for years, and both have them have been attracted to each other but have never acted on those feelings, much of it has to do with the fact that Reid and Eric )Eve’s twin brother) were inseparable and best of friends for years until their endeavor to start their own business crashed on them and both of them are stuck in a rut that they can’t seem to get out of. Then through a course of events, the attraction that Reid and Eve feel for each other is finally acted on and they realize what they feel for each other and before they know it they are in a relationship and finding something beautiful that they didn’t expect. We see a whole different side to Reid that you don’t expect, a sweet tender side that is something different with Eve. There is plenty of humor and playfulness in their relationship, but it’s packed with facets. But when Eric returns home to build a restaurant with Reid, he will force Reid to make a painful decision and Will Reid lose Eve through a course of mistakes of not being willing to fight for her as she deserves?

Last night meant more to me than just fucking my friend—it meant connecting with someone in a way I never have before. You made me feel shit, Eve, and I don’t let myself have feelings. But it felt good. Fuck, it felt so damn good. It’s why I want to sink myself inside of you all over again, because I want that feeling of euphoria to take over me, that feeling of comfort, of belonging. This isn’t just about fucking, at least not for me. This is about starting something new.

What I Loved
There was so much about this book that I absolutely loved. From the first chapter, I was entertained and I couldn’t put this one down. There is something so charming about Meghan Quinn’s writing and I absolutely adored the chemistry that is between Reid and Eve. They have a foundation of friendship between them, but when circumstances change between them, there is this sweet depth to their connection that they build on, and it’s absolutely adorable. I was all in with their relationship and the first half of the book especially was delightful. I was really interested to see what would happen in the third act though, as I was charmed by their relationship and loved to see where they were going with it. The sense of family connection was utterly delightful and I these “Text” conversations that the siblings have with each other was so fun to read and had me laughing all over the place. I am really curious about Brig and want to read his book so badly and see how the romantic will fall.

Maybe it’s time to grow up and accept what this love really is: a combination of ugly and beautiful moments mixing together to create an everlasting bond.

What I Struggled With
I wanted to give this book a five star, but what happens in the third act really rubbed me the wrong way. I really didn’t care for how Reid just caved to Eric’s demand to break up with his sister, and that he wasn’t honest about that with Eve but my biggest issue is how long this got dragged out. If it had been a shorter period of time, then it probably would have worked better for me, but I struggled with seeing this angst between Reid and Eve that was extended for so long. And while eventually Reid does get there and does what he needs to do, it did ruin my enjoyment of the story overall and thus effects my rating here.

Overall View
I found That Secret Crush to be a delectable read that is guaranteed to charm off your socks! It’s a witty, endearing, and charmingly intimate romance that will have you in your laughs and will bring you in tears in moments you least expect…..a fabulous coastal gem!!!

Love is never easy. Love is a foundation of challenges that stem from two souls colliding as one. There will be miscommunications and moments where we hurt each other, because we are human after all, but what truly matters is the realization that the person standing in front of you is the one person who makes you the best version of yourself.

So the first part of this book was just basically porn. It was all sex. No real character development or development of an actual love story.

The second part where they break up and actually have to communicate is better. There is more of a plot line than just sex. We actually learn more about their connection from childhood. We get a meddling brother. A restaurant opening with very unique food. I wanted to eat there.

What really brought this book up to 4 stars wasn’t even the main love story. It was Brig, one of the brothers. His parts in the book were absolutely hilarious & I immediately fell for him. He had a lot of parts in the second half, so I loved the whole second half of the book. I can’t wait to read the next book that is all about Brig & I hope it keeps the same vibe.

Keep in mind this book is wayyy spicier than her normal books.

DNF @61%
I thought I would love this book, since I enjoyed the rest of the series, but I just couldn't connect with the characters.
To start, Reid is very childish. By the 61% mark, he was still keeping secrets from Eve and thinking only about sex.
Eve let Reid get away with too much. He lied to her repeatedly and said mean things that made her cry, but she would immediately forgive him (even when he didn't apologize).
By the time I was halfway through the book, I decided that I didn't care how the book ended, so I quit. It's hard for me to quit reading a book, but when I get to the point where I don't care about the characters or how their story ends, then I usually throw in the towel.

I love Meghan Quinn's writing style, but this wasn't my favorite. I couldn't connect with either character and was over the drama half way thru. The rest of the series so far has been lovely and very entertaining, this just wasn't my cup of tea.

That Secret Crush is the third book in the Getting Lucky series. It follows the four Knightly brothers struggle to find love after being cursed in New Orleans by a palm reader to have doomed relationships. This one follows Reid, and his best friend, Eric’s twin sister, Eve. Reid is an absolute hot mess. He’s a chef, whose shared restaurant with Eric failed a couple years ago, and he basically has never cooked again, and never really moved on from that failure. He’s catching lobster on a boat, pretty unhappy, and angry about his life, yet pretty unwilling to change it. On the other hand, Eve is amazing. Eric basically never returned home so she took care of her parents as they were dying, and put her life on hold to do that. She is now finishing her degree and has her life pretty together. Eve and Reid have always been friends, and have always harbored secret crushes on each other and one night, they decide to act on their crushes. Their relationship runs pretty hot and cold, mostly due to Reid. But, Eve is so good for Reid and once he gets his stuff together, they are fantastic together. The best part of this series is the town of Port Snow, and the relationship between the brothers. These were still very present and my favorite parts of this book too. Brig’s book is next and I cannot wait for that one.

Reid and Eve have been friends since childhood. Eve is the sister of Reid’s best friend Eric. Reid and Eric had a fall out following a fail restaurant business. So, Reid moved back home to work on his family’s business, the same town where Eve is currently residing. The two have been crushing on each other for a while but they both kept it a secret aside from a lot of flirting and taunting. Reid is a dirty talker with no brain to mouth filter which made him quite a horndog the way he talks to Eve. Thankfully, Eve is such an easy going, fun, strong heroine – she can match Reid’s verbal sparring word for word. The chemistry is awesome - slow-burn turns steamy lovers. The banters and the sexual innuendos are hilarious, filled with many LOL moments. I also like the charming small town feels. If you are looking for something a little lighthearted, fun, low drama, hilarious, sexy friend-to-lover romance – this one is for you.

I so enjoy the Knightly brothers. Each one is utterly swoon-worthy in their own way. Reid and Eve’s story falls within the brother’s sister/best friend-to-lovers category.

In the town of Port Snow everyone knows everything about everyone. Gossip spreads faster than a wildfire, so it’s crazy the these two had no clue about the crush they each held for the other although it was apparent to everyone else.

Their friendship quickly transforms into much more and it’s everything they could have hoped for. But as you’d expect things get complicated...

This was a wonderfully sweet romance. Funny and emotional with the perfect level of steam. I loved it and I CANNOT wait for Brig’s story!!!

Book 3 in the Getting Lucky series and it is a great addition. Loved this story. A friends to lovers’ romance and that is my jam. Love this type of romances. So much fun watching these couples fall in love and Eve and Reid were no different. Loved it. Eve and Reid were really good together. Great chemistry. I needed more, I didn’t want the story to end.

The Knightly brothers are back!!! This time...Reid and Eve! In true MQ fashion, the humor and banter (which are things I love in Meghan’s books). Still trying to beat the “curse” and screwing things up royally, Reid and Eve take us on a roller coaster ride.

I’m enjoying this series so much and I’m ready for more of this family!!!
