Brides of the Kindred 24: Deceived

Anna is living in a nightmare. Stolen by raiders from the arms of her loving family, she is bought by a hulking Trollox for breeding purposes. She wants to die until her thuggish captor buys a new robotic cook who also doubles as a guard for the house. At first Anna thinks he is just another Replicant, without emotions but soon she finds herself pouring out her heart to him. It’s safe because he’s just a machine so she knows he’ll never hurt her like a real male would. Is it wrong to think that she’s falling in love with him? Especially since a machine can’t really love her back…

Dark is a Kindred warrior on a mission. He must steal the Shannom-rah, an ancient crystal capable of storing trillions of personalities, before the enemy of his people gets it. In order to do this, he has to infiltrate the home of the Trollox collector who owns the priceless artifact. Posing as a Replicant, he is in the perfect position to complete his mission. But he didn’t count on finding a female in danger. Despite his determination not to get involved, his heart is torn by her plight. As his feelings of protectiveness for Anna grow, he longs to tell her the truth about himself. But he knows doing so will destroy her faith in him—she has been hurt so badly by living males, she can only trust him because she thinks he is a Replicant.

When the truth comes out will Anna still care for him, or will she feel betrayed knowing that she has been…Deceived?

*Author's Though I have tried to handle it delicately, anyone with a history of past sexual abuse may want to read with care because my heroine Anna, is a survivor of a sexual attack. I don't write this kind of book lightly or gratuitously, I wanted to write about love and hope and healing and redemption. I hope I have achieved that goal with this book and that it will bring hope to others.

This story comes quite rightly with a warning from the author as there are acts within this book that will sicken many. To be really fair it's more that we are told about the atrocities rather than' shown' but it's a brutal tale of survival and hope.
Dark is a different Kindred to me as he has the ability to take away others pain but unusually he isn't actually a Warrior but is in fact a Chef ! He has been asked to go undercover and masquerade as a Replicant in order to steal a dangerous crystal that is being hunted by a powerful AI.
Anna was betrayed by someone she loved and has ended up a slave to a heinous alien who is attempting to get her prepared to bear him a son. Anna is quite rightly terrified but also very lonely and she strikes up an unusual friendship with her master's new robotic cook. Anna doesn't trust any man but she's safe with a Replicant isn't she ?
I'm always in awe of this authors imagination and have to admit that the alien in this is truly vile. I'm not going to go into excessive details but there are parts of this story that made me shudder. I actually thought that we got a lot more in this book than some because it's almost as if we are told two stories as not only do we get Dark and Anna forming an attachment but then the author hits us with the second half of the book as we catch up with exactly what the dangerous AI is up to.
I loved that we got to catch up with favourite characters from previous books and of course this being a Kindred novel there are very sexy times. The only thing I personally didn't like was the dialogue as at times Dark reminded me of a cheesy seventies character but then again I'm English and the author is American so perhaps that's the type of language men use with their partners in the US. Fans of this series will enjoy this book I'm sure and as usual there's enough humour within these pages to offset the darker moments.
This voluntary take is of a copy advanced to me and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I really enjoyed this one, but in saying that I'm never bored with this series. What disgusting aliens were involved in this one, you'll shudder. All is not as it seems with this Kindred pretending to be a robot. His mission becomes more than he could imagine. Just when it seems all is well, the author throws in a twist that will have you anxiously reading faster. Great story, I highly recommend it.

Anna is originally an Earth girl who was living with her Kindred stepfather and mother on another world (of course, she's originally from Florida) when she was deceived and sold as a breeder to a two-headed man with a massive cock. If Gorn impregnates with a baby boy Trollox, that Trollox will eat through her womb and kill her.

Gorn is in possession of a special artifact Dark and the Kindred need to have under their control to prevent the evil Knower from taking over.

I liked how a character who was mentioned off-page came on page at the end of the book (Liv and Sophia's grandmother, Nan).

I wonder if the Knower will still be a problem in the next books. And I'm curious about the Kindred Naught and the priestess.

I gave up 30% in, skipped to the last 5 chapters and read those.

Trigger warnings: flashbacks to past rape of the heroine by an ex

It was pretty graphic for this author, with nauseating dialogues and stuff.

The plot revolved around the heroine's complete fear of men and how the hero lied to her and pretended to be a dick-less Ken doll robot. He then started making out with her etc., all despite knowing that the heroine would not trust or tolerate his nearness if she knew the truth.

This massive overstepping of boundaries by the hero is later brushed under the rug because he is also a survivor.

In my book that just makes it worse, because having made similar experiences, he really should have known to respect the heroine and her limits.

Ugh

I loved this book really and it was very good. However, what made me give it 3 stars that the series had a repeated style with all the females in it. All the books which I read had the same routine. They were overweight, plump and had full curves, or as the author preferred to say (Elites).
I love the variety with the characters so I wish E.A changes this style sometimes.

Hot Kindred warriors, dangerous aliens, and a plan that puts two destined people in each other’s paths. If only their meeting was a happy one. Will they be able to defeat their common foe and get back with their hearts intact, or will this warrior’s deception tear them apart?

I found this series, and author, thanks to apple’s book suggestions, and ever since I have been obsessed with it, and her writing. I have to say, this one was a bit of a surprise to me. The book starts out with a trigger warning regarding the things that the heroine faces, and while I will say that the trigger warning is valid, the story itself was so wonderfully sweet and went far beyond the tragedy that the heroine and hero face.

The story starts with Dark, the Kindred Warrior/Chief, answering the call of the All Mother to go on a dangerous mission to retrieve an object that could spell doom for not only the Kindred but potentially all the galaxies. If it were just about using his abilities to snatch the object away from the brute who holds it, things would be simple, but this mission requires finesse, so he must do this without causing a scene. What he doesn’t expect to find is a human girl who sparks things in him he never thought possible. Now he has the very serious problem of trying to complete the mission at hand and save the women he knows is meant for him.

I have to say, I adored Dark. While Anna, the heroine, is the one that is currently experiencing horrors beyond imagination, his past is filled with tragedy as well, and his special abilities that his rare race of Kindred warrior gives him doesn’t always help him. This combination puts him in both the perfect position to understand Anna, as well as help her in ways no one else can. I loved how delicately he approaches the situation with her. More than anything, he wants to take every pain, every fear, and every threat to her away, but he knows he can’t just dash her out the window, and he knows that if he comes at her too strong, it could scare her further. His approach to gain her trust is so wonderfully heart melting, I couldn’t help but swoon despite the ugly situation surrounding them. I loved how Dark uses his special abilities to help ease the burden she feels, even though it costs him more than what it normally would for a Kindred who can do what he can. Dark brought light, love, and hope back to Anna’s life even though he knew it could all end with his heart in pieces.

The romance he manages to squeeze into their lives amongst the chaos is simply remarkable. I loved the way in which he handles himself in each new situation he finds himself in on the mission. However, I also loved that he made mistakes and how he both viewed those actions as mistakes and how he went about handling them. I really appreciate it when heroes and heroines are depicted in a more realistic light by making poor judgment calls, or mistakes. To me, it really helps me feel more connected to the character.

I also adored Anna. Anna has honestly suffered a horrible introduction to the world of men and love, hence the trigger warning. However, the way she handles the situation is simply remarkable. Anna continues to move forward. She is beyond not a stupid girl, she knows the odds of her getting away from the situation she is in is slim at best, but somehow she still finds some way to hope for the best. Her strength and determination to keep going is nothing short of amazing, but she is also a raw and real character. She is strong, but she also still allows herself to feel her emotions. The trauma she has gone through is not only fresh, it’s still happening and that, of course leaves her venerable and afraid of not only what’s happening, but of the feelings she starts to develop for Dark. I really loved how she approached him and the way she felt. The fact that she was being deceived does help with this a little bit, but I truly felt not only her longing to give into her feelings and find trust again, but to be healed.

The way the story progresses and how the characters grow is amazing. At first she is simply focused on surviving, but Dark slowly makes her realize she could also be happy again, that while she will always bear the mental scars of what she has experienced, she can still heal from it in the most fundamental ways, she can still find love and happiness. She also winds up helping Dark in ways she doesn’t even realize she helps him. I just really love all the love, kindness, and healing energy these two have for each other, it just made the feels roll right off the page.

On a final note about the characters, I LOVED that this heroine is NOT skinny and supermodel shaped. Most of the heroines in the Kindred universe are on the heavier side, and not only are these girls still loved and viewed as beautiful by their men, but the Kindred species in general find a woman who is heavier to be more beautiful than a woman who is skinny. Now, don’t get me wrong, they find their skinny women beautiful as well, but the more curves a woman has the better in their eyes. Now, I have seen a lot of heroes and heroines with scars and imperfections due to battle, but most of the time a hero or heroine has a body that is described as stereotypically supermodel gorgeous in novels but especially in romance novels. In fact, most of the time I can skip over reading the description of the heroines body and still know exactly what she looks like, athletic with long toned leg, a shapely yet tight ass, with a flat toned stomach, and perfect large perky breasts. Usually the only differences are how tall she is, hair color and style, nationality, eye color, and if she has scars and where they are. While there’s nothing wrong with depicting a heroine like this, but it is nice to see books that are much more inclusive when it comes to this topic.

I know a lot of the negative reviews this book received stated that they were unhappy with the book because of the heroines weight. It was said that the author shames skinny girls and isn’t inclusive to all body types. My response to that is, are you kidding me?! This author has featured girls who are not over weight in the past, AND there is even a small side story in this one that features a supermodel type girl. Also, stating that a book is no good because the heroine is overweight only says a lot more about the reviewer than it does the book. With all the books and authors out there that feature skinny perfect heroines, we need more that are truly inclusive to all body types and that allow the beauty of everyone to shine through. I hope Evangeline Anderson continues to give us beautiful books with amazingly stunning heroines who have curves and men who love that about them.

Overall:
Deceived was an amazingly beautiful book that had such an incredible storyline of healing and love. Both characters grow in emotional ways that was shockingly beautiful.

Would I Recommend It:
Absolutely yes. This book does deal with themes of sexual trauma, however it does more focus on surviving and healing from it, however if you are triggered by such things do please keep that in mind before buying this book.

This BotK has two main characters and two villains. Sometimes we have one evil character and in others we have a misguided culture. But these two must face an evil character in an evil culture and a murderous AI entity. I was completely blown away.
At first we meet the entity, but due to Ms. Anderson's skillful writing, I didn't realize the role it would play. Then we meet a Blood Kindred, Dark, who is also a Dark Healer with numerous talents...but no spoilers. Dark has been dream sharing with a beautiful female, but leaders on the Mother Ship ask him to undertake a very dangerous mission. He must agree to be sold as a Replicant to retrieve a priceless but dangerous artifact. The owner of this prize is Gorn, a Trollox, a being as repulsive as he is malevolent. When Dark is established as a Replicant in Gorn’s household, he discovers the female, Anna, is a slave whom Gorn has bought to be his wife. She has been deceived by a man who claims to love her and whisks her away, only to sell her as a Trollox slave.
I have read all the BotK as well as the Kindred Tales, but this one is going to be one of my favorites. I really enjoyed visiting some of my favorite characters on the Mother Ship, especially those from the early books. Although you don’t have to read these in order as this one is the 24th, you’re going to love it. If you are a fan of the series, this one is full of unpredictable designs. I know I will be reading Deceived again!

What another amazing story for this author. I just love the Kindred bride stories. Let me warn you, this good cause some triggers but the author portray a survivor very well.

I can not imagine what it was like for Anna. Knowing she might not survive, missing her family, and feeling so alone. She was being abused and this had to wear on her mentally knowing the abuse was only going to get worse.

I just loved Dark which is what is part Dark Healer and part Blood Kindred. The last thing he had to expect to find on this undercover mission was a pretty woman needing help.

The author was very creative when writing this story. There was also some very touchy subjects in this story that I think the author handled very well. I believe stories should not always be sun shine and roses but portray the good and the bad. I think the author took a bad situation and shown how one can survive and come out strong.

This was truly a great story and glad I got a chance to read the book.

As always the world building was excellent
The crazy sexual practices of aliens was imaginative and definitely disturbing, but entertaining. The plot was pretty good. Like another reviewer its the repetitive formulaic erotic components that drive me crazy. It's always the same, innocent and 'we have to have sex to save us, so I don't have to feel guilty' which is very weird to me with ALL the heroines, as well as if there is something wrong with wanting the big alien hot guy. I don't even mind the crazy sexual situations they're forced into. I just wish it wasn't always the same. I actually am tired of 'curvy' girls in this series, though I am SUPER glad this one did NOT use the term plus-sized AND it was less about self-conscious body image than the others. Plus no bashing skinny girls! Yay! So this one was an improvement on the same old formula. It is just a bummer the excellent plot was ruined a bit by the sexual scenes. They were sexy, but just... not mature.

Deceived is a fantasy romance novel in the Kindred series. One of the themes it covers it sexual abuse and you should not read if it may trigger you. This novel also spreads the message about how love and healing are important. Anna and Dark both have dark pasts and things they want to hide. But by encountering each other, they realize that with the right partner, time and patience, the healing of a battered spirit can take place. Faith can be restored in the bond of having a partner who is there for you. Evangeline did a great job not only portraying the light but also the dark elements. While there is another backstory that plays out in the background, it doesn't detract from the main story of Anna and Dark. It can be read alone but those backstory mentions always makes you want to read the other books in the series.

Warming our hearts
This book is not for the faint of heart. Before we get anywhere near the HEA we have to live through the characters pain. The author has made this woman so strong that she is able to withstand more than most could bear. But she does it, and she manages to keep her softness about her as she does. Dark is an anomaly to her, and what she thought was a robot, but in the end, they manage to overcome so much to find their way through the pain and to each other. I love that we get to see them both slowly heal and grow close. I also like that there is a story thread written underneath the love story, a path that will continue the Kindred tales through many more books. I am looking forward to the newt book in the series.

Awesome loved it

Deceived, book 24 in the Brides of the Kindred Series is another great read by Evangeline Anderson. She has done an excellent job of sensitively helping the two main characters in the story heal each other of the trama and ptsd of their individual sexual abuse.

Note for the author: Even though this was not one of my favorite books in this series (I am greatly enjoying this series), I thought you really handled the delicate situation as best as someone can write about a subject like that. I do think you were able and did a good job of focusing on the redemption and hope for someone in that type of situation.

Anna is living in a nightmare. Stolen by raiders from the arms of her loving family, she is bought by a hulking, two-headed Trollox.

In order to do this, he has to infiltrate the home of the Trollox collector who owns the priceless artefact. Posing as a Replicant, he is in the perfect position to complete his mission. But he knows doing so will destroy her faith in him - she has been hurt so badly by living males, she can only trust him because she thinks he is a Replicant...

This was a weird one. Set in a disgusting Trollox compound, I sincerely felt bad for both Dark and Anna. This was a hard one for me to get through, I did not really see the connection between the characters at first and for everything that Anna had experienced she seemed naive.

Review

Deceived by author Evangeline Anderson is the 24th book in the Brides of the Kindred series. This series is not really a standalone type series. Reading them in order is really the best. Characters we know and love come up again and the politics overlap too. I love this series. It is my favorite so far. Lots of passionate heat, and there is a ton of story to these books. I can sink into this world and get lost and love every minute of it.

Anna has a lot of enemies around her and a few friends. She loves confiding in the cook replicant her husband bought. She is a good person in a horrible situation she needs a Kindred to save her before she gives up on living altogether. She has a strength that jumps from the pages in this story. She might be down but not out yet.

Dark: is a Kindred Warrior. I liked that he is a spy. He is clever using his wits and is passionate. I loved how sweet he is deep down. He feels very different from other Kindreds I have met before.

Overall, I loved these characters. They deal with a lot and come out the other side. I adore the Kindred stories and hope for more of them in the future. They always make me want to re-read them and have them on my keeper shelf.

Deceived

An exciting and emotional story of abuse, torture, love, friendship, trust and romance. Dark is a Kindred Warrior on a mission to steal an item that would cause destruction and chaos if it gets in the hands of the Knower. Anna is a human who was living on a mining planet with her mom and her Kindred step-father. When she thinks she finds love, it all goes to hell when her supposed boyfriend was only checking to see if she was good enough to sell to a Trollox as a virgin for breeding. Now kept as a breeding female, Anna has no hope of freedom until a replicant named Dark is bought by her master for his excellent cooking skills. This was a very emotional story and the subject was handled very carefully by this awesome author. Bravo!!

Fantastic Book!

What would you do if the man you thought loved you sodimized you and then sold you at a breeder market for huge aliens? What would you do if you were a warrior who had escaped from being a sex slave and then sent on a mission that the Goddess wants you to do? You are pretending to be a replicant and have a fake covering over your genitals. You find a woman that you have dreamed of and immediately feel protective of. Yet you also have your mission to complete. You will have to read the book to find out what all happens.

2 or 2.5 stars rounded up just because of Nana. Anna got over her fear and anger at Dark too quickly. I feel like bonding fruit (or blood honey or lust blossoms or whatever) is a convenient excuse the author uses a bit too often to rush her heroines past trauma to being healed and ready for bonding sex. I would rather she have taken time and gotten there on her own with Dark’s help without the painful incentive.

The Mission!

Being sold into Slavery as a Breeder, was dreadful especially when it was done by what she thought was her boyfriend. Taken by two headed Alien was so scary, she despaired. Dark a Blood Kindred and a Chef, he is on a Mission from the Mother Ship and finds Anna and hopes he can help her even though he is in disguise.

4.5 stars. Oh my goddess, that poor Anna🥺 She so deserved Dark as her Mate. He was so tender even when she constantly pushed him away once she found out his deception. Hopefully, we can get updates on this couple.

Not to mention, the introduction of Naught and his possible storyline with young priestess. Hopefully, we won't be waiting long for this one🤞

What a ride for Dark to be on from not only Yonnie Six to the Tollex to opening the restaurant on the mothership. Then poor Anna, glad Brex found him and Dark was able to punish him. Strange that they are keeping nana around, but she is going to be a great addition. Cont wait to see what she gets up to lol.
