Foxwept Array #1

Pine, Alive

Rate this book
Pine never wanted to be a real girl.

But when the sentient androids of Foxwept Province are emancipated, she finds herself with little choice. Sent from her beloved Ghostlight Sea to the human city of Portfade, Pine must find herself a new place in a world that doesn’t respect the humanity it gave her.

Ex-soldier James Cruicéad isn’t thrilled about her liberation either. He’s had his own experiences with synadroids, and none of them good. They’re dangerous and unpredictable, and the one newly acquired by his mentor is no exception, no matter how naïve—and fascinating—she may seem.

But when James is tasked with watching over Pine, the pair are forced to confront some harsh truths—not only about the feelings they have for each other, but about the new era they both live in.

When the time comes to sink or swim, will they drown? Or will they be able to cross the ocean that divides them and discover what it really means to be alive?

Pine, Alive is a standalone science fiction romance retelling of Collodi’s Pinocchio and also the first book in the Foxwept Array series—where the future is a fairy tale.

Loved this book! I've never read a Pinocchio retelling before, and I loved the way the author set this up. It's perfect for readers like me who like science fiction, but not "hard" scifi....throw in some romance and and some interesting ideas about the ethics of AI sentience, and you've got a really interesting, well-written story. I'm looking forward to reading more from A.W. Cross in the future.

A truly unique look at how sentient robots may be treated in the future. With a smidgen of Pinocchio and a little taste of Jonah and the Whale, A.W. Cross has created a scenario that feels so real. The story of Pine and all the adversity she must overcome to be accepted into human society. You will never view robots as just machines again.

Wow

This made me think and made mybheart ache. I sant to say that I would be open minded but in all honesty I think I would be like James and struggle a great deal before I accepted Pine's humanity. But the important thing is, is that he did and others began to. And i hope I would too.
