Six Weeks to Words of Power

Rate this book
Here is a unique book. It selects and shows you how to use those verbs, nouns, adjectives which are the mainspring words of the English language. They are rightly called "power words" because they are the words which successful people know and use daily. If you learn these words, they will almost perform miracles in your speech, your writing, and your understanding.

This is an excellent companion book to "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary" by the same author. Like its predecessor, each chapter is on a specific topic, and a list of relevant words is presented (with definitions). Then multiple tests are given to help you in the memorization process.

I bought my little paperback copy of Six Weeks to Word Power (1965 edition - 16th printing - at a used book sale in 2018) because I love words and wanted to enrich my vocabulary. I did learn some new "power" words but this book also provided enrichments for writing (i.e. "how strong an influence in well-placed words" and "words are the pegs to hang ideas on") and how the proper word can sometimes replace five unneeded words.
Another surprise in this book was the little section on slang: "Slang, you see, if often poetry. It is frequently a fresh figure of speech" and "Slang usually grows from the bottom up."

This is an excellent book to build your vocabulary and to learn the meaning of where words originate from.
It's very informative and contains words in every category of the human emotion and descriptions to match.
The meanings are explained in detail.
You would be surprised to know how many words pass you by on a daily basis.
