Cassie Glenn’s first glimpse of the house at 66 Bucknam Road fills her with an awful sense of foreboding. Something about the narrow, Depression-era Colonial just feels wrong. It’s not long before what’s supposed to be a relaxing vacation for her family takes a descent toward darkness. The moving shadows in the hallways and attic, and the bad dreams she’s having, start becoming more real, and she fears for her two children. Something in the old house seems to be resonating with a grim secret from her past, a secret she has repressed for years. Don’t look don’t look Jesus don’t look— Rod Karn’s It’s Been Waiting for You is an intense, fast-paced scenic thriller. There is comfort in knowing what you know ... until you find out you didn’t know anything at all.
Some fairly common haunted house tropes in this one, but it's well written and enjoyable. Family goes to stay in a large property that they can afford because the husband has agreed to do some work on the place. Of course it happens to be next to a graveyard and has some creepy stuff in the basement.
The cat doesn't like the place and it isn't long before the wife, Cassie, starts seeing fleeting shadows in the mirror and having nightmares. The husband, Trevor, doesn't believe in ghosts and Cassie is left to her own devices to deal with the spooky goings on, along with her children.
There are various twists and turns in this story and I didn't like Trevor, though I started to for a moment when he did something particularly nice and creative for the children. The last part of the story had a couple of unexpected twists and blossomed into a full tacky B-movie scenario that had be groaning. A few points were belaboured a little too long, but still I needed to know what happened.
Not a bad story if you like tacky Horror and apparently there's a series, but this is where I stop.
This was a very well thought out book. I was literally hooked and could not put this book down. Loved all the twists and turns. Please read this book, you’re missing out on a rare find!!! Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I'm an avid reader & during the Shelter-in-place going on with the Coronavirus, I've been reading even more. I was almost burned out when I discovered this book but it kept me enthralled from the beginning. It's not a read for the faint of heart but for those who love the thrills of vivid characters dealing with more than just things that go bump in the night, then this is the book for you! Beware! You can't put it down & even after it's finished..it lingers in you mind...but I'm curious. Did YOU get it?
Giving this book 3 stars is a little generous for me. I am not a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, etc. and this book fit one or more of those catagories. I did not dislike it but do not plan on reading the other two books of this trilogy. There was enough mystery to keep me going but that was about all.
Horror stories can be horrible right to the very end. This story seems like that. But with Rod Kam' s writing the fear you feel seems so real you don't know what expect next. You've done a great job keeping my interest. I couldn't put the book down until it was finished in a grand fashion. I can't wait to read more books by you Rod.
If you workbooks about things going bump in the dark, this one has it all. Wet developed characters and a new story line. Hard to put down and full of suspense!
I appreciate the authors ability to weave a tale that would keep me reading, late into the night. I was still trying to figure everything out right up to the end. I liked the book and wood recommend it.
Cassie and her children were not very happy with the house they were forced to rent for the summer. It was old and needed many repairs. Her husband, Trevor, though, was very pleased. He would get to work on a special project he had wanted to work on for many years. After a few days, things went from bad to worse. Nightmares, ghosts, creatures and other unexplainable things started to happen. Cassie finally convinced the real estate agent and her husband to let them break the lease with no penalties and two months rent returned at the beginning of July. Things should have started to get better BUT...of course they didn't. At first I thought that the story was going to have the same old type of endings you will read in horror stories, but this author, Rod Karn, has given us a very good and unusual twist to finish this sorry. I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.
3.5 ⭐️ stars. A good Psychological Supernatural Thriller!! Thanks to Bookbub for sending a free copy!!
I am not going to write anything about the story as I leave it for the readers to discover what lies inside the 📖 book!!
However, I must mention the points which I liked in this thriller... 1. The twists and turns in the plot. 2. The way the story unfolds the secret evil. 3. The way characters are connected to one another. 4. The geographical and the geological details given about Long Island, are interesting for those who are interested to know about land formation. A thriller not only deals with psyche but also about certain details, which ultimately leads to the culmination of the whole story. For example volcanic stones like obsidian, will off course raise more curiosity and elucidate details, which are distantly related to the plot. 5. The frenzy and the chills which sets the reader in a whirlwind to find out more till they reach the end. 6. The gripping conclusion, which beautifully written and the closure which I think the readers are going to appreciate.
The story is about Cassiopeia Glen, Trevor Glenn, and their two children Rachel (8 years) and Matthew (4years). Their characters have their own traits and comes with some surprises! Then there are more interesting characters, who you would eventually discover, and would be awed to know more about them.
The things which I found a little odd about the story!! The reason, why I gave this book a 3.5 stars ⭐️ because: 1. It is odd you move to a house without knowing much about its history! 2. Rhonda Ferne, the realtor, never mentioned anywhere the name of the owner!! Isn’t it odd that Trevor never asked Rhonda about the owner? 3. At first it appeared that Trevor and Cassie had a very difficult time to understand each other... is it just because of Trevor’s unexplained evil-possessed obsession? 4. First part of the story seems to be oblique and hypothetical as if Cassie is having some mental hallucinations and it has also been mentioned that she was taking some anti-anxiety pills (benzodiazepine). However in the second part, she seems to be super conscious, her mind is racing faster than a normal person of reasoning.
Off course, Rod Karn has done an excellent job. I read Stephen King so I love supernatural psychological thrillers. This book has off course kept my expectations high but will like few more things in this book... a little more fear, a little more chill and a little more madness... for this I have left out the 1.5 stars... I hope Rod Karn will fulfill our expectations in his next book!!
Was not a very scary book but it was well written. I will try another book by this author.
It's a decent story about a mom named Cassie who tries desperately to save her family from evil entities in a home the husband Trevor rents for a summer in Long Island, N.Y.
Trevor finds a summer home that him and his family can rent at an extremely discounted rate as long as he agrees to make repairs to the home himself. Considering he lost his job and would not start teaching until after the summer, this was a deal he could not refuse!
The only problem is that there is something seriously wrong with this rental and only his wife Cassie notices it. At first it is just minor things…a butterfly with the shape of a skull on its wings, creepy shadows in the halls, boxes upon boxes full of beer caps, and a woman starting at their house in the middle of the night with a can of fuel in her hands, but then things begin to get worse. Something was seriously wrong with the house and the locals were reluctant to share the history of the house with Cassie. That is until one woman decides to share the house’s dark history with her…unfortunately that begins a chain of events that would change Cassie’s life. The first thing I noticed about this book was that Karn used very small details that would let you feel uneasy. For example right in the beginning the family cat got out of the car and started acting strangely by not wanting to go in the house. The Cassie started seeing shadows in the background but she pushed them aside because she thought they were a manifestation of a past trauma. So, just when things begin to get creepy you get told everything is fine, that is until the carpet gets pulled out from under you. There were several delightful twists that gave the story a even darker edge and I loved it. I pride myself in figuring out the endings of books before I get to them and I was pleasantly surprised by how this one ended. Overall, I think this book is a gem and I absolutely recommend it if you are looking for a horror book. This one will leave you on the edge of your seat and you won’t want to put it down. This book definitely gets the Owl’s Book Nest seal of approval.
There’s something wrong with the old rental house at 66 Bucknam Road. Cassie feels it right away. There’s the low shadow that races past behind her as she checks herself in the mirror. The Halloween skeleton that springs to life. The swaying shadow in the attic. The dead butterfly with the strange pattern on its wings. She tries to pretend none of this is happening. She badly wants things to work out. The getaway was her husband’s idea: a three-month escape from the city, a quiet summer in a remote Long Island town with their two young children. And, she thinks, maybe a chance for confused and troubled Trevor to find meaning again in his life after a devastating layoff. But the dreams ... something buried in her past has returned to torment her. Something about the house is stirring up terrible memories she has tried to forget. She desperately seeks the answer to a deeply unsettling mystery before it can tear her family apart. Don’t look don’t look Jesus don’t look—
Wow this is a great read!!! This is a fast paced intense read. The plot and story line are well written with so many twists and turns. Great characters that have been fleshed out well and can't wait to read more about them. I am so glad I found this and can't wait to read more in this series.

After her husband loses his job, Cassie and her family move into a home for the summer. One look and Cassie is ready to hightail it out of there, and that’s before she even realizes there’s something not quite right about the house their renting. It doesn’t take long before she realizes there is something off about their new summer rental and it’s not just her imagination.
I loved this book from the first page to the last page. There is nothing new or different about a spooky house with a history, but the way the author writes it, you feel as if this is your first time reading a book about a haunted house. His style of writing makes you feel as if your watching the book play out on the big screen. And just as I do when watching a very good horror movie, I had goose bumps and jumped at every little sound.
What I loved the most about this book, was how the author peeled back and exposed a bit of the house history, a little at a time, and allowed the reader to start putting it all together. The flow of the book was great and there were a couple of hidden gems that came out towards the end of the book that put it all together in a creepy package.
My only complaint, having to wait for book 2 in the Where Evil Lies Trilogy.
Thanks to Library Thing and Rod Karn for the chance to read an advanced copy of this book. 5 Stars.
This was a great book. The characters were put through hell and back. Scares a plenty and just when you think you have things figured out, WHAM!!!! you are knocked for a loop. Could not put this book down.

Can't wait to read second in series...this book was a heck of a first in series. Never had the pleasure of reading this author before, but what an adventure. Spooky, eerie, and pretty darn scarey at times. Loved it.
